10 things that you must see in Montenegro

09.01.2014.

In my travels true Montenegro I have meet with the country's coastal towns and it's inland. Visiting the towns of Herceg Novi, Kotor, Budva, Nikšić, Ostrog, Podgorica and Cetinje I must say that Montenegro is a country worth visiting, and best of all you can cover a lot of ground because the land is not big. So here is my summary of Montenegro.

Coast or the inland

If I had to choose between these two I would say Montenegro inland. First because of the beauty of the nature, the mountains and the valley’s. Don’t get me wrong I love the sea but there is really something in the Montenegro inland which will draw you in. The most disappointing place in the inland and in whole of Montenegro was the Nikšić. I really expected more from this town, particularly because I heard that the oldest Roman bridge in Montenegro is in Nikšić. I didn’t have the chance to see the bridge because of the floods, and the other landmarks or the lifestyle did not impress me much.

NIKŠIĆ

The Ostrog monastery is a place to visit, particularly because of it’s location (carved into the hill). Ostrog is a refuge for thousands pilgrims and travelers from all over the world, and is home of a lot of mysterious tales and miracles of it’s protector St. Vasilije. Since Ostrog is on a cliff you can enjoy the beautiful view on the whole Zeta land, and be fulfilled by the uniqueness of this place.

OSTROG MONASTERY

The capital of Montenegro, Podgorica is a true metropolis, that is not yet discovered by travelers. It’s a modern city with a lot of new buildings, but also home to a lot of historical monuments of Montenegro and even the heritage of the Ottoman Empire like the clock tower from 1667.

PODGORICA

The last town I visited in the inland part of the country was Cetinje. This town I really liked because it is a place where the foundations of the Principality and the Kingdom of Montenegro were laid. Cetinje was also the first town in Montenegro with modern buildings and hotels, and a home to most noble family’s of Montenegro.

CETINJE

As far as the coastal part of the country I liked Kotor the most. Kotor is a small port town with a very rich history. Surrounded by big walls from the 16th century, Kotor is placed on the UNESCO List of World Natural and Cultural Heritage, and is a must see place on the coast.

KOTOR

Budva is by all means Monte Carlo of Montenegro with it’s highly developed and very rich tourism accommodation complexes. You can feel wealth at every step of Budva, especially because of the great influence of the Russians and there money in this part of the country. Beneath all that glamour lies a rich history of this city, which is present in it’s center where the old town and city walls are located. The walls are surrounded by the sea so you will not miss on some excellent views.

BUDVA

Somewhat overshadowed by Kotor and Budva remains the city of Herceg Novi witch is located in the north coast part of Montenegro. I must say that the whole north part of the country is kind of poorer than the more developed but expensive part of the country. Herceg Novi is a nice tourist town with not so much content and historical heritage as is the case in other towns, so it’s not on the top of my must see list of Montenegro.
