Call him Jim, James, Jimbo, Jas., call him what you will; all you really need to know is that he's from Mississippi, and that he plays the blues. That's certainly all that matters on James Mathus' latest record with his band Knockdown South, Old Scool Hot Wings. He sticks to the Delta basics here, a dirty acoustic guitar and his voice, plus a bass, but he throws in a dobro, washboard, fiddle, kazoo, even a tuba when he sees fit. It's music like what's played on sagging front porches, thick with sweat and deep summer air that hovers stagnant and hot as calloused thumbs hit steel strings and wood. Mathus wraps himself around old blues classics, moaning out the words to "Peaches," letting the bass tap out the beat in "Bullfrog Blues," accenting the mandolin in "Wouldn't Treat a Dog" with harmonized vocals. It's real, and it's raw, like it was recorded in an old bar, the smell of whiskey and stale beer stuck in the spaces between the notes. But Mathus is more than just R.L. Burnside or Charley Patton. He's also Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams, and he reminds us of that, and how connected country and blues are in rural Mississippi. His take on "Old Rugged Cross," for which he smoothes out his voice, is lovely, with all the pain and suffering that it's supposed to have, and like any proud Southerner, he includes a version of "Dixie" using clean, rich harmonies and strings with simple percussion sustaining the movement, and when he sings, "I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixieland" you know he really means it. As if you weren't convinced about his authenticity and love for the music he's playing, Mathus also includes three original pieces that would fit into any Delta songbook, like "Torture Blues," which, with its sparse, repetitive guitar and vocals, sounds a lot like something Son House might have done. Which just goes to show that blues isn't so much about time and race, it's about passion and a feeling of connectedness to where you're from. Old Scool Hot Wings certainly shows that James Mathus has that. ~ Marisa Brown

Lightnin' Hopkins - The Complete Aladdin Recordings (2-disc set)

Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster (Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, THE COMPLETE ALADDIN RECORDINGS collects all 43 of Lightnin' Hopkins' tracks for Aladdin, a Los Angeles-based label that was the first to record the legendary Texas bluesman. One might be amazed at how fully developed Hopkins' art appears here, until one realizes that he was already 35 years old and a fully developed musician in 1947, when the first of these sessions took place. From the very first cut, the now standard "Katie May," Hopkins' confidence and mastery are apparent throughout this essential two-disc set. Hopkins recorded four sessions for Aladdin, two with a small ensemble and two later sessions as a solo performer. The ensemble recordings, which fill the first half of the first disc, are raw, gritty, and sensual: in other words, rock & roll for adults. "Short Haired Woman" and "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" are among the highlights. The latter portion of this set features Hopkins alone, a setting that shows off both his guitar prowess and his haunting vocals. "Shotgun" and "Abeline" are among the R&B hits recorded at these sessions. This set is a must for blues devotees. Newcomers to the genre might prefer MOJO HAND, a career retrospective on Rhino Records. Recoded in Los Angeles, California & Houston, Texas in 1946-1948. Live Recording Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar, piano). Liner Note Author: Pete Welding. Recording information: Commercial Studios, Houston, TX (11/09/1946-02/25/1948); Quinn Studio, Houston, TX (11/09/1946-02/25/1948); Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA (11/09/1946-02/25/1948); Radio Records, L. Produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Kathleen Edwards), I'll Find a Way is a unique collaboration between one of popular music's longest-running acts and one of its fastest-rising stars. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect fit to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and appreciation of gospel music. Vernon and old friend and band mate Phil Cook (Megafaun, The Shouting Matches) corralled a lively backing band for the album and hand-picked a range of songs for the Blind Boys to sing. I'll Find a Way features some of the Blind Boys' most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans - Sam Amidon, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself. The result is a rousing collection of gospel songs new and old that address life's most desperate hours but also savor the triumphs and reassurances.

Doug Quattlebaum - Guitar & Vocals

Notes: Doug Quattlebaum has spent most of his life outside the music business, and those times that he was in were spent mainly singing gospel. Born in South Carolina in 1927, he came to Philadelphia in the early 1940s. In 1953 he cut three sides for Gotham records; two of them appeared on a Gotham 78, but the third was only rediscovered years later by Bruce Bastin and released on LP: it's the best of the three (Foolin' Me). In 1961 Pete Welding recorded Quattlebaum again, after hearing that he was still around - singing and playing for potential Mr. Softee ice cream customers on the streets of Philly, Doug's employment at the time. Scheduled for issue on a Testament album, the sides remained unissued until the release of this CD. A few months later Quattlebaum recorded for Bluesville, but to my knowledge that LP was never reissued on CD as were most Bluesvilles and is difficult to come by.

Quattlebaum's years singing gospel are reflected in this CD in that about half the tracks are gospel pieces. Among the best are He May Not Come When You Want Him, Sam Cooke's Touch the Hem of His Garment, and the gorgeous Come Over Here. It's Nobody's Fault But Mine is an 8-bar gospel tune, while Come Back, Baby sounds like a gospel song but is actually a blues. Doug inflects just about everything he sings with gospel mannerism, and his voice is melodic and strong. He often invaded the repertory of other blues-r&b-pop artists, and here sings stuff made famous by Brook Benton (Kidido), Charles Brown (Drifting Blues), and Ray Charles (Come Back Baby). A couple of tracks are short guitar instrumentals, though they are not that impressive. Quattlebaum played in the country blues format, accompanying himself on guitar, a style that urban Philadelphia probably didn't appreciate. But his singing and guitar playing are excellent, and his material quite varied despite the gospel influence. Country blues and gospel fans should enjoy this CD. ~ amazon

Notes: Geoff Muldaur's 1998 album THE SECRET HANDSHAKE was a cause for celebration, coming as it did after a 17-year gap. The equally impressive PASSWORD came a scant two years later. He's joined on this one by an assortment of musical cohorts. Their appearances are subtle, always gracing the heart of the songs.
Charlie Patton's "Some of These Days" is rendered with light parlor room flourish, while Blind Willie Johnson's "Trouble Soon Be Over" is proudly funky, recalling Muldaur's time with Paul Butterfield in the band Better Days. The album closes with Muldaur and his guitar alone, singing the conclusion to his "Got to Find Blind Lemon," a saga which began on his previous release. As Richard Thompson has said, "There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them."

Allen Toussaint experienced a late-career revival sparked, ironically enough, by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He had to leave his hometown New Orleans after the hurricane, relocating to New York City where he started to play regular gigs at Joe's Pub and, soon enough, he cut The River in Reverse with Elvis Costello. That 2006 album propelled Toussaint toward a greater audience, leading to more headlining concerts, two of which are chronicled on Rounder's 2013 release Songbook. Recorded in 2009 at Joe's Pub, Songbook features nothing more than Toussaint alone at a piano running through songs he's written over the decades. He sprinkles in a New Orleans standard here and there -- there's an excellent rendition of "St. James Infirmary" -- but the spotlight is on his peerless originals, songs that are standards in their own right: "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)," "Holy Cow," "Get Out of My Life, Woman," "Yes We Can," a medley of "A Certain Girl/Mother-in-Law/Fortune Teller," "Southern Nights." Toussaint's voice sounds smooth and silky -- he in no way seems as if he's in his seventies -- and his piano is similarly nimble as it glides from signature New Orleans stride and boogie to sophisticated, elegiac chords. Perhaps this album packs no revelations -- there are no rearrangements, nothing unexpected in the songs -- but as an elegant summation of strengths, this Songbook is mighty attractive. ~Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Cincinnati Slim (AKA KC Elstun) was born in 1955 and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He began playing music at the age of eight, starting with the drums and later adding harmonica, saxophone, and guitar. He was playing in groups by age thirteen, and was heavily influenced by the rhythm and blues music being played in the Midwestern USA at that time. He was introduced to Chicago blues while listening to the radio late one night. “I was about fourteen when I heard Howlin’ Wolf on the radio. It blew my mind. After that, all I wanted to do was play harp and sing the blues."

He began playing professionally in 1977. In 1985, after spending seven years as a sideman in various groups, he formed the highly successful Cincinnati Slim and the Headhunters. The group toured regionally for almost twelve years, recorded an album for MoPro Records, and was the opening act for numerous artists including BB King, Bobby Bland, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and many, many more. He has appeared onstage with blues legends such as Bo Diddly, The Legendary Blues Band, and guitar great Lonnie Mack.

Several years ago Slim shifted his focus to Delta style blues, and currently sings and plays solo bottleneck blues guitar. He now makes his home in the Rhone-Alpe region of France.

Commonly regaled as a definitively American musical form, the blues are in fact a living amalgam of social, cultural and artistic antecedents both indigenous and otherwise. African-derived rhythms and folklore intersected with traditions extrapolated from European, Latin and Polynesian sources—with everything falling into the simmering melting pot that describes the music. Distinct styles were the product of both regional experimentation and the proliferation of commercial recordings. As a cross-pollinating musical ecosystem in the early part of the 20th century, the state of Texas was one of the most scattered and distinctive; the blues forms that arose within its arbitrary boundaries were equally so.

Notes: Before motion pictures... before radio... before television... the traveling medicine shows brought entertainment to America. Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are 48 classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Shorty Godwin, Gid Tanner, Banjo Joe, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more—well over two hours of this extraordinary music. A 72-page color booklet details the fascinating history of the medicine shows with a profusion of rare photographs, artifacts, illustrations, full discography, and song descriptions. Three years in the making, the new release from Old Hat Records is a groundbreaking survey of music from the American medicine show, that peculiar form of theater that merged entertainment with merchandising. Good For What Ails You is a two-CD set that delivers a generous mix of 48 songs, many available nowhere else, first recorded nearly 80 years ago and now remastered with digital clarity.

Good For What Ails You was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best Album Notes and Best Histornical Album. ~ Old Hat Records

“Like Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music, these 48 tracks provide a fine introduction to what Greil Marcus called ‘the old, weird America.’ If nothing else, such a cornucopia of delights will cure the modern day blues.” –Casper Llewellyn Smith, Guardian Unlimited, July 16, 2006

Bluebird“Factor in assorted skillet lickers, jug stompers, fruit jar drinkers, ramblers, crackers, tarheels and tobacco tags, and you have a buried history of vernacular music, therapeutic culture and politics second to none. Recommended; or rather, prescribed.” –Brian Morton, The Wire, November 2005

“When you go out on tour and play with different bands every day, or you play in bars all the time, your tastes start to become very selective... What I’m listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It’s quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up.” –Jack White, White Stripes, December 2005

All songs composed by Slim
* Slim, Big Fred

Notes: Slidin’ Slim is a blues guitarist/singer from Linköping, Sweden.
In 1991 Slim discovered the country blues of Son House, Big Joe Williams, Fred McDowell and Robert Johnson. He started to learn to play slideguitar and sing the blues. Slim took the stagename Slidin’ Slim and began to work with pianoplayer Fredrik Östergren. Slim played his first bluesgig at the legendary bluesclub Jefferson in Linköping. Another highlight was a gig together with Bluesväder (that later changed name to Knock-Out Greg and Blue Weather) at Skitiga Duken in Stockholm.
First recording
1995 saw his first recording ”How blue can a young man get?” that consisted of 6 classic countryblues tunes played solo. Slim started to play full-time together with guitarist David Book with whom he made his bluesfestival debut in Mönsterås.
Second recording
His second recording ”Going down slow” with acoustic countryblues and electric Chicagoblues came out in 1996. Among the players was David Book and Big Fred. Slim joined forces with established bluesmusicians (harmonica/guitarplayer Lasse Olsson from the Nightcats, drummer Roger Mörck, bassplayer Magnus Ekman and guitarist Ari Hautala) and formed The Jungle Kings. Also that year he released the recording ”Introducing The Jungle Kings”. and toured and played at festivals in Järfälla, Mönsterås and Åmål. Due to geographical reasons the Jungle Kings disbanded later same year.
EP
”I´ve had my fun” was released in 1998, and consisted of 5 original songs written by Slim. The music was a mix of alt.country and acoustic blues. The blues man also leaves Little Slim & The Roadmasters and starts to tour more with Big Fred again. He records a new CD-Ep during the summer with Big Fred, ”The stars come out at night”. It consists of 4 songs (2 originals by Slim).
First full-lenght album
The following year, 2004, he starts the year with signing a publishing deal with Sweden Songs. Slim begins to write songs for his first full-lenght CD together with Big Fred. Mylla begins to work with bassplayer Nicklas Brännström and drummer Krister Persson and plays at Linköpings folkmusicfestival among other places. In November the CD with Big Fred, ”Ten Long Years”, is released on No Budget Records. 10 out of 11 songs are originals. The record gets great reviews and soon recieve airplay in countries like Denmark, Germany, France and Holland among other contries around the world.

Kim Wilson - vocals (5), guitar, harmonica
Pinetop Perkins - piano (2, 8)
Mark Carpentieri - Drums (2, 8, 13)

Notes: This album is a joy indeed, a journey inside the blues and down the Mississippi Delta. Johnson's always been an expressive singer, and in such a stripped-down setting his voice becomes more important than ever on classics like "Smokestack Lightning" and "My Babe." His guitar work offers the ideal backdrop, too, never fancy, but juke-joint friendly, serviceable, and offering a strong beat. Bringing in former Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson to play harmonica proves to be an inspired move, he and Johnson conjure up a blues duo from the '50s, and when legendary pianist Pinetop Perkins sits in on a couple of numbers things really smoke. The Johnson originals on the album sit comfortably next to the classic covers, and the gutbucket style assures plenty of musical muscle, with Johnson and Wilson constantly pushing each other further. Where drums do come in, on three of the 13 tracks, they might as well not be there, they're so low in the mix and offer so little they're certainly not missed anywhere else. On the evidence here, Johnson is every bit as comfortable on his own as he is with the backing of a band, and the more intimate, live setting (the disc was recorded in two days) brings out some subtleties in his singing and playing styles that get lost in a group setting. An enjoyable and even important modern blues record. ~ Chris Nickson

Notes: Leadbelly - When the Sun Goes Down, Vol. 5...Leadbelly: Take This Hammer
Audio CD - RCA/Bluebird 82876-50957-2
CD Release Date - May 6, 2003
The fifth issue in Bluebird's Secret History of Rock & Roll project is the first by a single artist; the previous four have all been various-artists compilations. All feature excellent sound and decent if not exceptional packaging. This set, the complete RCA Victor recordings of Leadbelly, is up to that standard. All of the 26 tracks here were recorded in June of 1940 and released at various times as 78s by Bluebird. Some of the material includes virtually definitive versions of "Midnight Special," "Rock Island Line" (primarily because of the quality of the recording itself; the performance is awesome, but all of Leadbelly's performances of this song are), "Easy Rider," "Grey Goose," "TB Blues," "Don't You Love Your Daddy No More," the title track, "Stewball," and "I'm on My Last Go 'Round." This alone is reason enough for any fan of Leadbelly to purchase the CD, and these transfers are so fine, so warm, and so true sounding that they mark a new standard in remastering material from worn master tapes. (Give a listen to the back-to-back tracks "Good Morning Blues" and "Leaving Blues" -- they sound as if Leadbelly is hanging on your couch singing these songs.) The music here doesn't sound like archival material; it sounds alive and it becomes possible to hear what those who were initially knocked out by Leadbelly were able to experience. For anyone interested in Leadbelly's music, this is as essential as the Folkways recordings -- and in some ways, more so. ~ Thom Jurek

Take This Hammer

Appendix: An album that I have posted 13 09. 2013. Leadbelly - Take This Hammer obviously has the wrong image and some of the figures in notes, everything else is fine. I got this album from a friend of five or six years ago, why he has only 13 tracks I don't know. Maybe it's issue some smaller label from Eastern Europe or something.

Notes: One of the very earliest pre-war blues albums I ever purchased as a kid was Yazoo's L-1031, J.T. "Funny Papa" Smith, billed as "The Original Howling Wolf". Now, I knew back then who the real Howlin' Wolf was, had a bunch of his records, but I'd never heard of Smith, so I bought the album on a leap of faith that it would be great. I remember being very let down back then by what I heard, because I had visions of the frantic, manic vocals by Chester Burnett, and Smith just didn't measure up to my expectations. I promptly forgot about the album, and somewhere along the way I sold it off.

I did not know until recently that Yazoo reissued that compilation in 1992 on CD, and for whatever reason, last week I decided to take another leap of faith and buy it again. My reaction 40 years after first hearing these recordings is markedly different than my reaction at age 17: Smith is a wonderful vintage Texas blues guitarist and singer! The Yazoo CD, which apparently went OOP a long time ago, also sounds fabulous. The source 78s used to compile this CD were in superb condition, and the resulting sonics are first rate, especially given the age of the recordings. ~ Tom Rushen

Barrelhouse Chuck - Blues Calling

With the recent loss of Detroit Jr. it becomes more acutely aware than ever that the piano blues is a dying art form. There's only a handful of old timers keeping the tradition alive such as Pinetop Perkins, Henry Gray and Ernest Lane. Barrelhouse Chuck represents one of the few younger generation pianists (he's 52) and has been well schooled in the art as he demonstrates on this fabulous excellent CD! The tracks here showcase the commanding piano work and wonderful vocals of Barrelhouse Chuck, alone and in top form covering Leroy Carr (Barrelhouse Woman/Ain't Got No Money Now/Six Cold Feet In The Ground), Little Brother Montgomery (I Keep On Drinking), Robert Nighthawk (Anna Lee), Pinetop Perkins (Gigolo) and top-shelf originals like Blues For Little Brother Montgomery, Iza Mae, She's Gone Blues, and Half Of A Pint Boogie (with help from Erwin Helfer) There's little question as to what Barrelhouse Chuck has to offer blues fans - he's a respected master of a dwindling art - the evidence lies in his growing catalog.
Chuck has paid his dues the time honored way by apprenticing with piano masters such as Sunnyland Slim, Pinetop Perkins, Lafayette Leake, Detroit Jr, Big Moose Walker, Blind John Davis and Little Brother Montgomery. Chuck spent 16 years studying with Sunnyland who he calls "the great-granddaddy of all the blues piano players." He also formed a special bond with piano legend Little Brother Montgomery. He honed his craft working and recording with a who's who of Chicago legends like Louis Myers, Jimmy Rogers, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Kim Wilson, James Cotton, S.P. Leary and many, many others.

Whether playing solo or with a group Chuck is a terrific two fisted piano player steeped in the Chicago tradition of guys like Little Johnny Jones, Big Maceo, Leroy Carr, Otis Spann and of course Sunnyland and Little Brother. He also happens to be a very good vocalist. Chuck's piano playing is best appreciated on solo numbers like the wistful Little Brother number "Keep On Drinking" where he sounds uncannily like his former mentor both on piano and vocally, the storming boogie-woogie of "Viola's Stomp" just backed by fleet fingered Ben Andrews on guitar, the heartfelt tin pan alley sounding original "Iza Mae" and goes back to 1934 to revive Leroy Carr's depression era classic "Ain't Got No Money Now.

While the great era of Chicago blues piano is past we hear the ghosts of those greats in the marvelous playing of Barrelhouse Chuck who keeps the flame burning bright on the thoroughly satisfying " Blues Calling"

Notes: 2008 three CD set featuring two discs of Peter Green's award-winning recordings of bluesman Robert Johnson classics plus a third disc containing Johnson's own recordings of the songs that made him a legend. The 29 songs that Robert Johnson recorded in various Texas hotel rooms in 1936 and 1937 are amongst the most significant and influential works in the history of Blues music. It was thus very appropriate that it was to these landmark songs that Peter Green turned when recording the two albums which have done so much to re-launch his career, 1998's The Robert Johnson Songbook and 2000's Hot Foot Powder.

You probable have all those albums, but Peter Green is one of my favorit blues artists [I grown up with his music (Peter Bardens Looners, Shotgun Express, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, Brunning Sunflower Blues Band, Peter Green Splinter Group) the best years of my life, then I discovered Acoustic Blues] and so I want to have some of his albums on my blog. Robert is different story. It's not to hard to find 29 songs on internet, but those are remastered two year ago, sound is very good, and I hope you will enjoy. ~ muddy (2010, On Muddy Sava Riverbank)

Here, Harlem is a full-strumming, vigorous conjuror of Delta spirits. He is a stellar talent in performing Delta blues and Piedmont ragtime guitar. His style of the vintage Southern blues styles is as good as the originals. ~ Tom Schulte

In loving memory of Jo Ann Kelly

Artist: Jo Ann Kelly (5 Jan. 1944 — 21 Oct. 1990)
Genre: Blues, Rock
Styles: British Blues, Country Blues, Delta Blues, Acoustic Blues, Rock, Country-Rock
Instruments: Guitar, Vocals
Bands: Jo Ann Kelly Band, John Dummer Blues Band, Terry Smith Blues Band, Tramp
Similar artists: Barbara Dane, Gene Clark, Elmore James, Bob Hall, Dave Kelly, John Dummer, Tony McPhee, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House

The rock era saw a few white female singers, like Janis Joplin, show they could sing the blues. But one who could outshine them all -- Jo Ann Kelly -- seemed to slip through the cracks, mostly because she favored the acoustic, Delta style rather than rocking out with a heavy band behind her. But with a huge voice, and a strong guitar style influenced by Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton, she was the queen. Born January 5, 1944, Kelly and her older brother Dave were both taken by the blues, and born at the right time to take advantage of a young British blues scene in the early '60s. By 1964 she was playing in clubs, including the Star in Croydon, and had made her first limited-edition record with future Groundhogs guitarist Tony McPhee. She expanded to play folk and blues clubs all over Britain, generally solo, but occasionally with other artists, bringing together artists like Bessie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe into her own music. After the first National Blues Federation Convention in 1968 her career seemed ready to take flight. She began playing the more lucrative college circuit, followed by her well-received debut album in 1969. At the second National Blues Convention, she jammed with Canned Heat, who invited her to join them on a permanent basis. She declined, not wanting to be a part of a band -- and made the same decision when Johnny Winter offered to help her. Throughout the '70s, Kelly continued to work and record solo, while also gigging for fun in bands run by friends, outfits like Tramp and Chilli Willi -- essentially pub rock, as the scene was called, and in 1979 she helped found the Blues Band, along with brother Dave, and original Fleetwood Mac bassist Bob Brunning. The band backed her on an ambitious show she staged during the early '80s, Ladies and the Blues, in which she paid tribute to her female heros. In 1988, Kelly began to suffer pain. A brain tumor was diagnosed and removed, and she seemed to have recovered, even touring again in 1990 with her brother before collapsing and dying on October 21. Posthumously, she's become a revered blues figure, one who helped clear the path for artists like Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block. But more than a figurehead, her recorded material -- and unreleased sides have appeared often since her death -- show that Kelly truly was a remarkable blueswoman.

People have begun to discover just how good a blueswoman the late Jo-Ann Kelly was. That's led to a trawling through the vaults, which have turned up albums like this, of obscure compilation and unreleased cuts. Key to the Highway covers what's arguably her most prolific period, as her star was ascending and was at its critical height (although it should be noted that the 1974 end date in the title is very elastic -- there are six cuts from 1975, and two conversation pieces from 1988).

This double CD by the best blueswoman England ever produced isn't new; it's actually a compilation from material already available on the Mooncrest label. But it's hard to criticize the recycling (unless you already own the other discs), as it provides a superb introduction to her raw style. Listening to the 45 tracks here you can conclude: In many ways, Kelly was everything Memphis Minnie aspired to be, an excellent guitar player, blessed with one of the most affecting voices in blues, and a huge compositional talent.

The set kicks off with four numbers taken from a rare Harlequin blues EP compilation, recorded with Tony McPhee in 1965. This was not Kelly's first session, she'd done an earlier one for Mike Vernon's Purdah label, but that remains unreleased, and thus this was the music with which Kelly was introduced to the world. Also featured are a pair of tracks from another scarce blues Harlequin compilation, this one released by the label in 1968, as well as a few more taken from other various rare collections. However, the bulk of the album boasts a stream of superb unreleased material, including no less than five songs recorded with guitarist Stefan Grossman during his U.K. tour in the summer of 1977.

Davis Coen - 2 albums: Hard Luck Cafe / Blues From The Get-Go

Blues circuit guitarist/singer Davis Coen's most recent accomplishments have included original music on the DVD release of Martin Scorsese's PBS special 'The Blues'; and a couple of performances on the DVD documentary about Hillcountry Blues and the music of the late-great Jesse Mae Hemphill, entitled 'Dare You To Do It Again'. He also often receives several plays daily on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio; achieving the No. 1 position on the channel 74 'Bluesville' play chart for his last three CD releases. In addition Coen's music gets sporatic airplay on Musak & DMX satellite radio as well as numerous other blues programs in the U.S. and internationally.

Coen has been touring the U.S. since his teens, usually accompanied by bass and drums performing hard blues with an electric trio. Davis commonly plays at clubs, bars, and festivals throughout the Southeast and mid-south, being out of Charleston, South Carolina. He has also enjoyed a dozen tours of Europe, promoting his 6 album releases, Cryin the Blues '95, Blues From the Get-go '99, Can't Get There From Here '06, Ill Disposition '07, Blues Lights For Yours And Mine '08 & Magnolia Land '09.

He has shared a bill or opened for many classic blues artists such as James Cotton, Junior Wells, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, Big Jack Johnson, T-Model Ford, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Eddie Kirkland, Earl King, Nappy Brown, and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. He has also shared bills with such non-blues performers as Richie Havens, Mountain, Eric Burdon, Branford Marsalis, Kool & The Gang, Tito Puente and Toots & The Maytals. These past two years Davis has played at a clean-up kickoffs in Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi for Katrina victims, performing before the Mayor of both Cities and was honored with an achievement award for his conglomerate MS Coast relief efforts.

Notes: Lot's of living room chatter between Rev. Gary Davis and the guests.
I have chosen to leave all that in for historical purposes.
This is a reel to reel recording made in 1968 at my home. We had Reverend Gary Davis over for dinner prior to a concert he was to perform the next evening. He was gracious enough to offer to play a few tunes for the guests after dinner. As you can hear there were quite a few people there sitting around our small living room while Gary performed. There was a great deal of interaction with Gary. Many of those present didn't know much about him and he answered our interesting or naive questions graciously interspersing his responses with some patter about each song he played. Obviously it was a wonderful experience and I'm glad I recorded it for the historical record. Later I learned more about Gary Davis and really could appreciate his importance in the world of music.
On CD 2, I have no idea what track 11 is (My Grandmother's cat). I have never heard that before but it sounds great.

I have no idea who wrote these words, and in whose home this event recorded. I have downloaded this album over the internet a few years ago.

The first time the trio played at "The Old Blue Coconut" in Pulborough I remember thinking as we were playing that this would be a good room to record in. That's how it got started! Roger had intimated that he would like to stand down this year. So I decided to catalogue the chemistry of the trio as it had been most times quite extraordinary, and there did seem to be some sort of telepathy between us.

A conversation between Nigel Glockler and myself convinced me to go ahead. He put me in contact with sound engineer Stuart Cambell and the rest, as they say, is history. Stuart made an amazing job of recording the two sessions at T' Coconut and mixing it all. Along with Nigel (who very generously allowed us the use of the studio at No. 13) he has produced arguably the best thing we have done yet.

Special thanks to the owner of T' Coconut, Jim Lee, without whom there would be no album.

So those of you who have this album: please enjoy! and for those who have not: hurry up and get it! Yours, Bob Brookes

Notes: The most relevant young blues artist in quite some time
"Fantastic! Great voice and a great playing style! Traditional blues done with a hip twist." ~ Johnny Winter

"Samuel James is like a time machine - the same one that keeps Son House and Mississippi John Hurt traveling back to the public consciousness." ~ Portland Phoenix

Samuel is a young talent from who grew up in Maine. His music is a time-warp of sorts, harkening back to pre-World War II songster traditions. You’ll hear shadings of Son House, Mississippi John Hurt and Mississippi Fred McDowell in his music, as well as Piedmont ragtime influences.
Samuel’s new CD, Songs Famed For Sorrow And Joy, features his own compositions set to his guitar playing, singing and foot tapping. His songwriting is very fresh, and seems closer to short stories put to music rather than the random verses about women, whiskey and gambling so common to the older blues forms.
I found Samuels singing style, a sort of talk-sing at times and a shout at others, very urgent in nature. His vocals grab you, pulling you into his songs. James’ vocal delivery is not unlike that of a local St. Louis musician Matt “Lightnin’ Thunders” Walsh from the Rum Drum Ramblers. If you’ve heard Matt sing, it will give you some idea of how Samuel James phrases his vocals. For a very nice full bio about Samuel visit his page on the Piedmont Talent website http://www.piedmonttalent.com/bios.cfm?ID=115. ~ Lee Howland, aka East Side Slim

Begun as an acoustic spinoff of the Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna eventually became the full-time focus of founding members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, emerging as a popular touring act of the 1970s. The two were lifelong friends, growing up together in Washington, D.C., and playing in the group the Triumphs. After high school, guitarist Kaukonen and his government-service parents relocated to the Philippines, but he returned to the U.S. in time for the advent of psychedelia, landing in San Francisco and co-founding the Airplane in 1965. Bassist Casady joined not long after, and together they helped lead the group to massive success during the late '60s.

Hot Tuna — originally dubbed Hot Sh*t, much to the chagrin of their label, RCA — first began taking shape in 1969, while both Casady and Kaukonen were still active members of the Jefferson Airplane; in fact, their first performances were sandwiched between regular Airplane gigs. As a trio rounded out by harmonica player Will Scarlet (and occasionally including Airplane members Marty Balin and Spencer Dryden), Hot Tuna debuted in 1970 with a low-key self-titled LP of traditional blues and ragtime recorded live at the New Orleans House in Berkeley; by the following year's more rock-inspired First Pull Up, Then Pull Down, their roster included violinist Papa John Creach, concurrently a full-time member of the Airplane, and drummer Sammy Piazza. Minus Scarlet, a third album, Burgers, appeared in 1972.

By the appearance of 1974's The Phosphorescent Rat, both Casady and Kaukonen had officially exited Jefferson Airplane; by this time Creach, who elected to remain with the Airplane, was no longer in the group. With 1975's America's Choice, Piazza too was gone, replaced by drummer Bob Steeler; Yellow Fever appeared that same year, with Hoppkorv following in 1976. Keyboardist Nick Buck signed on for 1978's Double Dose, but Hot Tuna subsequently announced their breakup, closing out the first phase of their career with 1979's Final Vinyl.

In the wake of the group's demise, Kaukonen released a solo LP, Jorma, and later joined the new wave unit Vital Parts; Casady also fronted a new wave group of his own, SVT. In 1984, both returned to their roots: Casady joined fellow Airplane alums Balin and Paul Kantner in the KBC Band, while Kaukonen reverted to the acoustic folk and blues of his formative years. Finally, Casady and Kaukonen played a handful of club dates under the Hot Tuna aegis, re-forming on a more concrete basis in 1986; by 1990, their ranks included singer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Falzarano, a veteran of many early reunion shows.

That year Hot Tuna released Pair a Dice Found, their first collection of new studio material in over a decade; a series of live releases followed, including 1992's Live at Sweetwater, 1997's Splashdown Two, and 1999's And Furthurmore.... In the years to follow, Hot Tuna continued to play several live shows a year in various configurations. A single-disc best-of from the RCA years, Keep on Truckin', was released in 2006. The group’s first studio album in 20 years, Steady as She Goes, recorded at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, New York, and produced by Larry Campbell, was released on Red House Records in 2011.

Mike Stevens & Matt Andersen - Push Record: The Banff Sessions

Size: 112,6 MB
Time: 48:19
File: MP3 @ 320K/s

Label: Borealis Records

09. Share The Load (2:36)
10. That Girl Is Like A Traion (5:41)
11. Push Record (7:13)

The theme of Push Record is simplicity. The title track is meant to reflect how far Matt Andersen and Mike Stevens took this theme, the liner notes say: “The tune arrived in the rehearsal room so we just ‘Pushed Record.’” It’s just two talented musicians, one with a harmonica, and the other alternating between acoustic and hollow-body electric guitar.

Escaping all the technological frills that alter the recorded product in a studio, the artists boast that “All the recording was live off the floor—no headphones, no overdubs, no edits and no processing.”

The album was written in five days, recorded in one day in Banff, and mixed the next. It manages to catch some of the sparks that fly when two gifted artists and friends come together

The record is the second collaboration between Perth-Andover, New Brunswick’s beloved blues guitarist Andersen and Sarnia Ontario’s bluegrass harmonica expert Stevens. The songs, all original and alternating regularly between slow and fast, are a mixture of blues and folk, with Andersen and Stevens drawing on their respective backgrounds.

One of the best songs is “Pawnshop,” certainly the most convincing of the slow songs. The mournful tune then segues nicely into the very upbeat “The Mountain.” But, even though they were going low-tech, they didn’t exactly take it easy. Things got so heated in the studio that you can actually hear Andersen’s amp blowing up at the end of the last song. ~Review by Simcha Walfish

Notes:Steve Plater - A dynamic wicked guitar player, both electric and acoustic, has gained the recognition as one of Australia's finest multi-instrumentalists. Steve is a one man band performing on Drums, snare and hi-hat with his awesome sounding handcrafted Biscuit-Tin/Jack Daniels tin guitar and Cigar box guitars made by Steve himself, clearly giving the raw rootsey edge to Salty Dog,s unique sound.
From their opening set Steve's energy is radiated into the crowd setting them on fire with his powerful drumming and fierce guitar playing captivating audiences young and old, are dancing or either tapping their feet to the hypnotic beat immersing themselves into the music! Through out the show anxious punters speak to Steve about his wicked custom instruments which mostly result in a sale or two! Don't be surprised if you see one of Steve's creations hanging around at the odd venue here and there. Soon he won't have to bring all of his instruments to shows as he may just grab a Jack Daniels Whiskey Tin guitar from over the bar that various venues have purchased from him at past gigs and play it!The guitar demon set the crowd on fire when Salty Dog performed
at the recent International Blues rock festival in Phuket Thailand which sealed a come back performance.
Steve won Male Artist of the Year Vic/Tasmanian Blues awards back in 2000 and is the only non vocal guitarist to win such an award in the category, is, a master perfectionist at his craft. He recorded a Solo album in 2006 WILD GUITAR including originals and his own renditions of Surf/Blues dedicated to his all time favorite guitar players Dick Dale Roy Buchanan Robin Trower

The Document collection Montana Taylor and Freddie Shayne: Complete Recorded Works (1929-1946) does fans of barrelhouse piano a favor by issuing the 17 tracks associated with Montana Taylor, from his recording debut in 1929 to his (all-too-brief) rediscovery in 1946. Taylor plays it low-down on highlights like "Detroit Rocks," "Whoop and Holler Stomp," and "Indiana Avenue Stomp," and Chippie Hill guests on three sides (most notably "Worried Jailhouse Blues"). If that wasn't enough, the label also tacked on six sides recorded by piano/accordion expert J.H. "Mr. Freddie" Shayne, which also includes a few vocals from Chippie Hill.

In the early days of rural Blues, singers entertained local folks and audiences by their song writing, singing and storytelling abilities. One old blues story was the tale of "Mr. Charlie" where a stuttering child who cannot speak clearly tells Mr. Charlie his mill is burning down by singing the news to him. Songwriter Samuel R. Favers, known professionally on stage as Sammy Blue, may be the last of the Blues artists still performing that has that perfect trifecta of singing, songwriting and storytelling. Live At The Blue Note West captures his art in all three categories. While his playing and singing on this CD is obviously for the entire audience, Sammy's storytelling and dialogue often gives each listener the feeling it is directed to them personally.

Sammy Blue has performed on three continents over the past 40 years with his band and as a solo artist.

Notes: From Pasadena, USA, now resident in London - combination of blues, jazz, folk and country music.
He is a songwriter, vocalist, guitar player -- a musical artist who may confound expectations; combining in his work elements of jazz, folk, blues & country music, both in his original compositions and in the songs he chooses to "cover". In solo or duo performances, or with the Guy Tortora Band he is carving out a singular niche on the Roots 'n' Blues scene in the UK & Europe. Some describe his music as postcards from a personal Storyville, delivered with conviction and passion.
"Jefferson Drive" is the title of his latest album on the Turtledove Records label. Recorded at the Tonezone Studio in Kent, UK, & just released in 2004, it's a set of thirteen original songs & standards, a great mix of the old and new, ranging from blues to blue-grass. Like other American contemporaries, Guy refuses to be cooped up in any box, blue or otherwise.
G T plays both acoustic and electric guitars, with a fine line in bottleneck playing. His guitar work has been compared at one time or another to players from the well-known likes of Ry Cooder, to the more obscure such as Rainier. But, as one writer has said: "Comparisons are un-necessary: He is simply Guy Tortora". At live performances he is accompanied by the accomplished UK musicians who are members of the Guy Tortora Band: Janos Bajtala, Keyboards; Brendan Canty, Bass; and Neil Littman, Drums. Lucky audiences are sometimes treated to backing vocals by the "UK Family Jewels" of Frankie & Bex. He changes effortlessly between his Taylor acoustic six string, a "Style N" resonator guitar, and a Fender Strat or Tele, in both standard & open tunings.

Bristling with character and originality but all the while steeped in tradition, Rag'n'Bone Blues is an album for any fan of traditional jazz/blues acoustic guitar playing. Incredibly strong song-writing and some truly excellent finger-picking!

A classically trained musician, Danny fills his time performing, composing and teaching. He has recorded two original albums; “Easy Street” (2004) and “Wood’n’Strings” (2011) and toured extensively with Nicky Moore’s Blues Corporation, appearing on their cd “Hog on a Log” (2007). Respected by his peers, he performed at the Registry of Guitar Tutors annual conference (2011) and has studied American Roots & Blues Guitar with guitar maestro Mike Dowling in Wyoming, USA.

Danny favours the acoustic approach of bottleneck-slide, acoustic steel-string and resonator guitars. His songwriting is a unique combination of the old and the new; tradition and inspiration. With old world sensibility and well-crafted tunes, his style is at once highly melodic, rhythmic and engaging. Add to this some haunting renditions of the traditional blues greats (Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Skip James, Blind Willie McTell), some travelling songs, spiritual songs, instrumentals, ballads, not forgetting some red hot finger-picking and... well, you’re starting to get the idea...

“One of the most subtle and clever acoustic guitarists around” ~Darren Weale, Blues Matters UK

Though John Fahey cut only three records for Vanguard between 1966 and 1969 (he cut a slew for his own Takoma label as well) , some of his most adventurous -- and some would say maddening -- work is here. Vanguard Visionaries compiles ten cuts from the latter two of these LPs, 1967's Requia & Other Compositions for Guitar Solo, and 1969's Yellow Princess. From the former, some listeners will be either gratified or horrified to know that all four parts of "Requiem for Molly" -- a 20-minute composition for acoustic guitar and electronic tape montage with the manipulation of found sounds -- is here, as is the beautiful and moving "Requiem for John Hurt." The other five cuts from Yellow Princess, represent Fahey's "American Primitive" trademark guitar style, full of its mode and stylistic changes all though repetition and rhythmic shifts. These cuts, serve, as well as any, the mannerisms of Fahey's playing on his earlier Takoma recordings. That said, he is forever unpredictable, no matter how often one hears these songs. His playing is simply the element of imagination and surprise itself. While it's true that "Requiem for Milly," may be off-putting for those looking for a real introduction to Fahey, this is his earliest experimentation with the electronic sounds he explored a great deal more in his later career, and stands as a singular moment in his catalog. ~Thom Jurek

In loving memory of Cyril Davies

Cyril Davies: Father of British Blues Harmonica

Born at St Mildred's, 15 Hawthorn Drive, Willowbank, Denham, Buckinghamshire, near London, he was the son of William Albert Davies, a labourer, and his wife Margaret Mary (née Jones). He had an elder brother named Glyn, and the family is believed to have come from Wales.
Cyril Davies began his career in the early 1950s first within Steve Lane's Southern Stompers, then as part of an acoustic skiffle and blues group with Alexis Korner.[citation needed] He began as a banjo and 12-string guitar player before becoming Britain's first Chicago-style blues harmonica player.[citation needed]
In 1962, Davies and Korner opened a club called the Ealing Club in London, adding bassist Jack Bruce, saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and drummer Charlie Watts, to form the electric band Blues Incorporated. The album R&B from the Marquee features both Davies and Korner.
Many young musicians visited the Ealing Club and 'guested' with Blues Incorporated, including Rod Stewart, Paul Jones, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Eric Burdon, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Ginger Baker.
Soon there was musical tension in the band, as some members wanted to play crowd-pleasers like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley tracks while Cyril Davies was a blues purist who wanted to play what he saw as only genuine Chicago-style R&B. Following the dissolution of Blues Incorporated in October 1962, Davies formed the Cyril Davies All-Stars in November 1962 and recorded five tracks for Pye Records, who had announced an R&B label featuring music imported from Davies' favourite Chicago musicians ("Country Line Special", "Chicago Calling", "Preaching the Blues", "Sweet Mary" and "Someday Baby").[4] The original line-up, largely recruited from Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, was later subject to frequent changes, particularly after Davies' death.
A number of 'R&B All-Stars' tracks with various line-ups, including Carlo Little, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Nicky Hopkins, are to be found on different record labels and anthologies - the name apparently continuing for several years. Those compilations include, A Shot of Rhythm and Blues (Sequel Records), Stroll On (Sony Music), and Dealing With the Devil (Sony Music).
Davies died of acute leukemia in January 1964.

Directed by Cyril Davies
Released: Aug 3rd, 1961 (VJM, VEP10 )
Liner Notes by Brian Rust

Notes: Jug bands there have been a-plenty on records, made exclusively in America, chiefly in the cities of Memphis, Louisville, and Atlanta, mainly during the classic era of jazz from 1922 to 1931. There origin is as old as the blues; to the big companies operating in America today, they are not a commercial proposition any more, it seems. But this group, resident in London's folk-song club, the Roundhouse, in London's Wardour Street, is the first British jug band ever to make a record for commercial release.
The leader and general all-rounder (no pun intended!), Cyril Davies, used to play with our Steve Lane's Famous Southern Stompers and is the composer of that strangely attractive minor-key melody THE STAGGERS which has been recorded for us by Colin Kingwell's Jazz Bandits (VEP-11). On the session that produced the above tracks, he knelt before the microphone, the better to record the instrumental number SHORT LEGS SHUFFLE, which suggested its name. The rippling folksy banjo by petite Lise Turner, wife of the jug player Reg, is one of the most attractive and unusual sounds on any VJM record.
The first track on each side is a tribute to the Memphis Jug Band and its leader, Will Shade, who for nearly four years (February 1927 to November 1930) directed many sessions in Memphis and some in Atlanta, playing all the instruments used by Cyril Davies and Jeff Bradford. K.C. Moan was actually issued here on Regal-Zonophone in February 1937, but while a good sale of such a record could probably be expected now, it meant nothing to the public then. A more thoroughly satisfying blues performance has seldom been recorded, and this version echoes that mood.
W.C. Handy's HESITATION BLUES is a well-tried folk song, with countless variations on the lyrics. Lise Turner sings with Cyril Davies on this and IT'S THE SAME THING, and the effect is quite remarkably close to the sound of the country blues bands that made records "on location" in the South upwards of three decades ago.
This is not a skiffle group as the term as the term came to be misused by the Tin Pan Alley men in 1956 and a couple of years thereafter; it is a group of four enthusiastic and artistically sensitive people, mature in years, not teenagers, who have steeped themselves in their idiom with these happy results. ~ Brian Rust

Notes: Early in the morning of January 8th, 1964, I received a telephone call from John Martin: "I'm sorry to be the one who has to tell you this, John, but Cyril died last night." Cyril had been taken to hospital at six in the evening and within five hours was dead. I just could not believe it - he had been ill for some months, that I knew, but the suddenness of his death threw me. Some days before, as we were crossing the footbridge from our old stamping ground Eel Pie Island, he had said something that flashed back into my mind at that moment. "You know, John, I think this will be the last time I'll walk on this bridge".
As it happened, that particular evening at the Island was to be his last public appearance.
The first time I ever met Cyril Davies was a few weeks before the earliest tracks on this album were recorded. I was only a young kid just out of school at that time, just playing guitar and singing a little and very much in love with the blues. Although I had been listening to records by Bill Broonzy, and Muddy Waters among others since I was twelve, I had never heard English people playing and singing the blues until the evening I walked into the Roundhouse (the pub in Soho, not Arnold Wesker's ex-railway turntable shed) and heard Cyril and Alexis Korner. I used to go every Thursday evening and they would invite me to join them on the piece of lino between the piano and the bar, which served as the bandstand, encouraging me in my desire to be part of the blues scene. Those were great days, because apart from Cyril, Alex and myself performing, there were visits to the club by Big Bill, Muddy, Memphis Slim, Otis Spann, Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Derroll Adams and many more.
Of course, Cyril was better known then as a twelve-string guitarist than as a harmonica player. But later, in the days of the "Blues Incorporated" and the All Stars", he never played guitar on stage, so naturally became absolutely identified with harmonica. I have always thought it a great pity that his guitar playing was never utilized on his recordings for Decca and Pye. However, this situation can now be rectified as we listen to this collection of memorable recordings thanks to Doug Dobell.
As I listen, I look back and think of the little black Alsatian Uschi (still alive and well and monstrous in Kent) that he gave me from the litter of his scrapyard watchdog Kim. The entire barful of dockers on Teesside for whom he bought drinks all night. The inimitable way he curbed a tribal civil war in the back of a Timpson's coach outside Middlesbrough Infirmary. My sudden arrival back to sobriety one night in Burslem with a well-aimed harmonica hurled at my head from the stage. But there's not enough room on this sleeve to tell it all. Perhaps Doug might let me record an album one day so that I can tell you the WHOLE story of the Legendary Cyril Davies. ~ Long John Baldry

Miss Quincy has spent all winter holed up in her log cabin in Northern Canada where she wrote and recorded her new record “Your Mama Don't Like Me”. This toe tappin' collection of original tunes showcases Miss Quincy singing her brand of Grassroots Gypsy Blues and is due to be released on June 15, 2010.

Miss Quincy does not fit the classic Singer/Songwriter mold. She's upbeat, original, and edgy. Her music takes you to a dimly-lit smoke-filled blues joint and even sometimes cross into vaudeville territory. "Well, if I had to describe this album", says Miss Quincy, "I would have to call it 'back porch brothel blues', or something equally backwoods and whiskey soaked

The recording of “Your Mama Don't Like Me” took place in Miss Quincy's cabin during a cold snap where temperatures dropped below -40 degrees. If you listen closely you may just hear the crackling of a wood stove or the swish of a whiskey bottle behind a group of musicians playing like their lives depend on it all key elements in the making of this album. The album is worth noting not only for the quality of Miss Quincy's original compositions and soaring vocal performances, but also for the talent of some of Canada's finest roots musicians. Craig Korth, banjo player extraordinaire from one of Canada's favourite festival bluegrass bands Widow Maker makes several appearances, as does renowned violinist Josh Giesbrecht from the wonderfully weird Resurrect Christ Foundation, another festival phenomenon. Carrying the low end on upright bass is Mr. Peter Mynett from Victoria BC's Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra.

Miss Quincy has composed songs ranging from the dark and lighting fast black-grass tune titled, "Dead Horse" to the song, "Your Mama Don't Like Me" with a vaudevillian flair. You can hear the drunken piano player Glennn Mitchell (Russell Jackson Band) pounding out the blues and Miss Quincy wailing on the blues harp. There are stories full of heartache, a little love, and a lot of whiskey - all undeniably toe-tapping, hip-shaking, and filled with Miss Quincy's signature vocal prowess and vintage flair.

Miss Quincy is of a new breed of DIY musician who is fiercely independent, driven, and committed to a grassroots musical approach. Make sure to catch a show and pick up a signed off-stage copy of her new album as Miss Quincy graces festival stages, bar rooms, street corners, and living rooms in Canada and the UK this spring and summer.

"Devils Monkeys Aliens" is already the 23 Album of the artist, when I have lost count. Whether so many publications are not already rated inflationary, I can not judge, because I only know two of his more recent CDs except for the recent live performance, because, unfortunately, nothing of him was on the radio in Australia. There is no pleasing album, although it is based on a harmonious cooperation between the two guitars expertly edited by Mally and Schwinn , such as the video as "Devil 's Child " demonstrates quite clearly from the previous year. The rhythm of the two full -blooded musician goes from full. But the lyrics are black and evil.

The pieces are composed in large part of Oliver Mally himself , some of Frank Schwinn or two singer-songwriter. Only "The Cape" comes from foreign pen, namely Charles Guy Clark, Susanna Clark and Jim Janosky . The eleven songs lined up in interesting sequence. "Devil's Gone Fishing" for example, or "One Note And You're Dead" face " asty Habits", then you are even "Trapped" and has the "Monkey On My Back" in " Jungleland " . Finally invites "Please Come aliens" , but goes into 6:27 minutes without looking back in "Is not No Looking Back ". ~Google translation from German

Notes: Charley Patton (between April 1887 and 1891 – April 28, 1934), also known as Charlie Patton, was an American Delta blues musician. He is considered by many to be the "Father of the Delta Blues", and is credited with creating an enduring body of American music and personally inspiring just about every Delta blues man (Palmer, 1995). Musicologist Robert Palmer considers him among the most important musicians that America produced in the twentieth century. Many sources, including musical releases and his gravestone,[1] spell his name “Charley” even though the musician himself spelled his name 'Charlie'. ~ Wiki

Notes: While Sugarcane Collins is not a well-known blues name in the US, the release of this album might change that. Hailing from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, this guitarist’s throaty, deep voice is more suited to a pub somewhere in the Mississippi river delta.
In Way Down the River, Sugarcane recreates the world of the old south, with its prisons, bars, freight trains, and the roads that lead to nowhere. The imagery is made more lifelike by the honest intensity and passion in Sugarcane’s voice. The lyrics do not mince words, and give a vivid picture of the harsh reality that was the delta. His hard, driving guitar playing contributes to this intensity with complex fingerpicking and wine bottleneck slides.
In this album of completely original compositions, he shows a solid connection to his music and to the blues on the whole. He lists inspirations such as Charlie Patton, Son House, Robert Johnson, Blind Blake and Leadbelly, all of whom can be heard to have an influence on his playing. Not only is the musicianship on this recording exceptional, but the whole album was produced and arranged by Sugarcane himself.
Even though this album is Sugarcane’s show, the other musicians on the tracks are in no way lacking. Andy Vogel plays some hardcore blues harmonica through out the album, especially in "I’ve Heard the News". His introductory track, "Like a Midnight Shower of Rain" sets the tone of the album, bluesy, reflective and powerfully mournful. Bryce Wearne’s jew’s harp is the driving sound in "Dancing Rabbit Creek," a tribute to the native people of the delta who had their land taken from them treaty by treaty. The instrumental is sparsely arranged and Gary Howard mimics native drum rhythms on the congas. "Shine the Light" features Bob Howlett on the organ and a congregational choir, highlighting the spiritual, revivalist part of southern culture. It has all the soul and power of any gospel song, combined with Sugarcane’s bluesy rhythms.
For anyone who loves the blues, as a listener or a musician, this CD will likely make your top ten list. The sound is amazing and the musicianship is enthralling. You’ll be dancing in no time! ~ http://www.jazzreview.com/

Notes: Dave Van Ronk plus folk-boom stalwarts Danny Kalb (co-founder of Blues Project), Barry Kornfeld (sideman for Tom Paxton, Patrick Sky), Sam Charters (author, producer, ethnomusicologist), Bob Brill (Foc'sle Singers), and Artie Rose. This is a true jug band, with actual jugs and kazoo. Most of the material is classic jug-band fare (New Orleans style jazz, Piedmont blues), but they also do three rags (A3, B2, and B5), all instrumental, plus "You'se a Viper" (a Fats Waller tune about reefer -- pretty unusual for 1964), and a version of "Mack the Knife" that hews much more closely to the Three Penny Opera than to Bobby Darin's Sinatrified version. ~ fatpidgeon

Folk singer Dave Van Ronk did several collaborations with "Traditional Jazz" and "Jug Bands" in the New York City 1960s - very fun interpretations of old New Orleans Jazz, Traditional Blues and Jug Band favorites which were later done by groups like the Jim Queskin Jug Band. This is some outstanding American Music that should be available to everyone.

Too bad this recording is now only available as a rare import - it should be generally re-issued, maybe as a double album with the Red Onion Jazz Band LP he did. ~ Studebaker Hawk

Notes: A gravel-throated back-country blues growler from the Mississippi Delta, Tommy McClennan was part of the last wave of down-home blues guitarists to record for the major labels in Chicago. His rawboned 1939-1942 Bluebird recordings were no-frills excursions into the blues bottoms. He left a powerful legacy that included "Bottle It Up and Go," "Cross Cut Saw Blues," "Deep Blue Sea Blues" (aka "Catfish Blues"), and others whose lasting power has been evidenced through the repertoires and re-recordings of other artists. Admirers of McClennan's blues would do well to check out the 1941-1942 Bluebird sessions of Robert Petway, a McClennan associate who performed in a similar but somewhat more lyrical vein. McClennan never recorded again and reportedly died a destitute alcoholic in Chicago; blues researchers have been unable to confirm the date or circumstances of his death.

Take your mind back to a time before mindless 120 beats per minute pop dominated the airwaves - to the early 20th century – when the raw sounds of harmonicas and guitars meant real music for the people. This was a deep, dark, and tantalizingly evil mix of rural blues that was played and recorded by musicians throughout the southern states of the USA and broadcast over the radio waves even further.

Meanwhile – quite a few years later – and even further down south, Dom Turner (Backsliders) and Ian Collard (Collard, Greens & Gravy) became obsessed with the sound and spent most of their adult lives studying and playing it. Working as a Guitar/Harmonica duo, they strip the music back to it’s rural beginnings. At the heart of their sound is the north Mississippi hill-country music of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Johnny Woods mixed in with the pre-war blues sounds of artists such as Skip James, Blind Willie Mc Tell and Leadbelly.

Dom Turner is best known as guitarist/ vocalist, founding member and key songwriter of the iconic Australian blues group, The Backsliders. Dom’s influences are many and varied – a blend of delta blues, piedmont blues, rock, dub and sounds of Asia. He is a highly regarded speaker on blues music and has guested on ABC radio programs (including guest presenting Radio National’s ‘Music Deli’) and presented music workshops at festivals and in universities (both nationally and internationally). In 2004 Dom was voted ‘Blues Songwriter of the Year’ at the Australian Blues Awards. Dom has toured as a solo artist in the USA, playing and teaching blues guitar at Augusta Blues week in West Virginia, and in 2006, touring Mexico with US blues greats, Del Ray and Steve James. His trademark ‘slide’ guitar sound can be heard on myriad session recordings and his songs have featured on the ABC TV programme 'Seachange’, as well as the soundtrack to Tim Winton’s best-selling novel, ‘Dirt Music. Most recently, in addition to touring and recoding with Backsliders, Dom has been working on a cross-cultural music recording with Vietnamese stringed instrument master, Kim Sinh’. Dom Turner was the artist in residence on ABC radio 702 Morning’s program in July 2009.

Ian Collard is a gifted vocalist and harmonica player and winner of the Australian Harmonica championship in 1996. Ian is known primarily for his work with the multi award-winning Australian blues band, ‘Collard Greens and Gravy’ and has toured Australia and the United States with the group. Ian also tours and records, with Dom, as a part-time member of Backsliders. In addition, Ian is a sought after session musician, lending his soulful dark harmonica tones to recordings by a range of artists from Jeff Lang to Ash Grunwald to CW Stoneking.

As a duo, Dom Turner and Ian Collard have recorded a debut album, ‘Mama Says we’re Crazy Too” recorded in July 2010.

"As a blues guitar player, I am stunned and in awe of Toby Walker's pickin'! Not only does he master diverse blues styles, but plays them with both flash and depth. That's the advanced class -- few players can do both. Add to that his fine songs and singing and friendly presentation, and it's obvious that Toby Walker is one of the most enjoyable artists in today's Blues World."...Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin,

Internationally and nationally acclaimed Toby Walker has been hailed as a roots music fingerstyle guitar virtuoso who has toured the US, England, Wales, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Walker has been featured in the New York Times, the London Sunday Times, the London BBC, Sirius-XM radio and was the 1st place recipient of the International Blues Challenge Award given out by the Blues Foundation in Memphis TN.

Walker combines the styles of blues, ragtime, country, bluegrass, rock and old time jazz into his own unique style. Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane says "Flat out... you have to hear this great musician... I'm blown away" and has employed Walker to teach at his famous Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp for 6 years. In 2010 Walker won the NY Music Award for 'Best Instrumental CD,' sharing the honors with Mariah Carey, Rufus Wainwright and Judy Collins among many others.

Jo Ann Kelly (5 January 1944 - 21 October 1990); The rock era saw a few white female singers, like Janis Joplin, show they could sing the blues. But one who could outshine them all, Jo Ann Kelly seemed to slip through the cracks, mostly because she favored the acoustic, Delta style rather than rocking out with a heavy band behind her. But with a huge voice, and a strong guitar style influenced by Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton, she was the queen.

Jo-Ann Kelly was released on CBS (Epic) 1969 and reissued on Beat Goes On, 1998. The British blues boom' was almost over, but Jo Ann Kelly stayed close to the real thing. CBS sent her to the USA that year, she rehearsed with Johnny Winter and appeared on the same bill with her heroes Bukka White and Mississippi Fred McDowell at the Centenary Blues Festival in Memphis (the only British artist who was invited), and duetted with McDowell on his Standing At The Burial Ground, made live in London that year. But her promotion including a USA college tour was underfunded and left her exhausted.

A singer and guitarist of enormous influence, Tampa Red's thirty-year recording career yielded hundreds of recordings. Primarily known as a blues guitarist, Red played hokum, Swing, Ragtime, pop, jazz and just about anything else that was popular from the 1920s to the '50s. He was a slide guitarist with an uncommonly precise and linear touch whose playing couldn't have been further removed from the slashing Delta styles of people like Charlie Patton or Bukka White. His articulated phrasing and singing, melodic lines are closer to that of a horn player than any guitar player performing at the time. He is probably most famous for his work with pianist Georgia Tom Dorsey. In the 1930s the two cut a number of sides of outrageously songs, many of which have become cult classics.

Born Gerald Loughran, 19 July 1942, Yeotmal, Central Province, India, d. 17 November 1987. Born to an Irish father and an Indian mother, Lockran and his family moved to England in 1953. Two years later, aged just 13, Lockran was playing guitar in a skiffle band called the Hornets. However, it was not until he heard Elvis Presley’s guitarist Scotty Moore that Lockran really took interest in the instrument. What clinched it for Lockran was hearing Big Bill Broonzy and Brownie McGhee. They, he claimed, were his greatest influences. He regularly played in clubs in Europe through the early 60s, and the latter half of the period saw him consolidate his popularity in the UK and on the continent. In 1974 Lockran toured the USA with Joe Cocker, and at one stage was offered the chance of replacing the headlining artist, who had fallen ill, but declined saying that he ‘didn’t want to be Joe Cocker’ as he had his own loyal following. Lockran also supported artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Eagles, Rod Stewart, and at one time the American press likened Lockran to another great blues man, Taj Mahal.

Lockran gradually moved away from the British folk scene, finding himself able to make a better living playing in the USA. This decision was also prompted by the fact that the British folk scene had largely scorned blues through the early 70s, preferring to retain its traditional image. It was while returning from a German tour in October 1981 that Lockran suffered a heart attack, and not long after this, a stroke left him partially paralyzed down the left side. In 1982 another heart attack left him unable to perform, cruelly ensuring that his legacy of country-blues and rag-time were confined to his recorded works. Lockran’s albums featured a veritable who’s who of the music business, notably Cliff Aungier, Henry McCullough, Pete Wingfield, and Neil Hubbard. A collection of Lockran’s poems, Smiles And Tears, were published in 1983. Lockran died in November 1987 following another heart attack. Such was the respect that he was held in that a benefit night held for his family on 24 January 1988 at the Half Moon, Putney, London, saw artists such as Cliff Aungier, Gordon Giltrap, Wizz Jones, Bert Jansch, Dave Kelly, Alexis Korner and Henry McCullough turn out to play.

Notes: Although the gimmicky subtitle of this release is "The Secret History of Rock & Roll," this music stands apart from merely being an influence on rockers 20 years later. The valuable release has all of the music recorded by folk/blues singer-guitarist Leadbelly during two sessions he cut for Victor in 1940. Thirteen of the 26 selections have Leadbelly joined by the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet and these were originally released as Midnight Special. The other 13 numbers are solo vehicles for Leadbelly that range from traditional story-telling to blues; highlights include the classic "Good Morning Blues," "TB Blues," "Sail On Little Girl, Sail On," "Alberta, "Roberta" and "Alabama Bound." Although a few of the numbers are a bit primitive, this set is an excellent introduction to the historic and wide-ranging music of Leadbelly.

Making up tunes and whiling away the hours with an acoustic guitar on a roof terrace of a flat in an exotic locale like Barcelona, Spain seems like a dream way for one to spend their days. British expatriate troubadour David Philips has lived that dream, but he's sharing that dream with us through his upcoming CD The Rooftop Recordings.

On just his second album, Philips does away with already sparse accompaniment of Heal Yourself Alone and made The Rooftop Recordings all by himself, save for the remastering. Recorded in a room that leads out to the roof terrace, Philips engineered, produced and mixed a record that featured only him, his acoustic guitar and guest appearances by his 3 string cigar box guitar, a ukulele and a lap style dobro. Oh, and also a harmonica and some percussion provided by foot stomping here or there. All twelve songs are fresh new tunes that Philips conceived in that Spanish flat.

Having worked as a guitar sideman for such various acts as Brian Jackson (Gil Scott-Heron, Kool and the Gang), George Braith, Charlie Wood (Albert King), Alvin Youngblood Hart, Hook Herrera (Richie Sambora, Govt Mule) and Geoff Young (Sting, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne), Philips could have continued going on making records for others but some 5-6 years ago he discovered a passion as a singer-songwriter and his solo career was launched. So, Philips hadn't been doing this folk/blues gig all his life, it only sounds that way.

Notes: Recorded live in Bremen, Germany, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere documents the re-emergence of Geoff Muldaur to the concert stage. After having spent most of the '80s and '90s concentrating on film scores, the business side of music, and computer-related projects, Muldaur returned to the studio and released 1998's acclaimed The Secret Handshake. The success of this disc prompted a small tour of Europe that led him to the Moments club in Bremen, where this intimate solo performance was recorded. With his gentle guitar and beautifully weathered voice, Muldaur moves effortlessly through a comfortable collection of folk-blues standards and originals for a subdued yet appreciative German audience. Songs selected for this set provide a nice variety that crosses through different factions of blues music, with Muldaur's voice easily matching the tone and style of each composition. Unlike some of today's blues singers who lick and trill their way though lyrics, his unadorned vocal work quietly conveys the ghostly character in Walter Davis' "I Can't See Your Face Anymore," while coming vibrantly to life on a rockin' version of Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mama." His pipes get a workout on Vera Hall's "The Wild Ox Moan," a highlight from The Secret Handshake, where he caps off phrases with a tripping falsetto "moan." Even more so in concert than in the studio, Muldaur is able to showcase his mastery and passion for the blues, and this warmly affective performance stands as undeniable proof. AMG

Notes: This impressive album assures that New Orleans music will live strong and healthy into the next generation. A collaboration between a couple of once upstarts, now stalwarts of the new roots-music generation, this is good-time music. Corey Harris plays slide-steel guitar and about 90 other styles, slipping his strings between the 88 piano keys that Henry Butler dances across. On the collaborative tracks, which make up most of the album, their two instruments leave no room for others. They're tight as yarn, weaving together like a Mardi Gras Indian headdress. Each also makes solo performances. They've been compared to great partnerships like Tampa Red and Georgia Tom, but this suggests too much of a historical sound; Harris and Butler are thoroughly modern. Comparing them to Professor Longhair and Snooks Eaglin is accurate in spirit, but Vü-Dü Menz is so fun, no background is needed to enjoy it; even Martians would shake their hips to this much swing. ~ Robert Gordon

Notes: Mississippi-born guitarist Brint Anderson traveled several continents for three decades as he pursued a career as a professional musician, only to end up putting down roots in New Orleans, a neighbor of his Natchez hometown along the Mississippi River. A stint as a guitar player for Dr. John led to Anderson's settling down in the Big Easy, a move that led him to membership in Porter's Runnin' Pardners in the summer of 1992. The following year he took top prize in the Abita Beer Blues Competition. In 1997, Offbeat magazine bestowed on Anderson and Porter's Runnin' Pardners a Best of the Beat Award. To raise funds for a local hospital, Anderson competed in the New Orleans Musicians' Barbecue Cook-Off, where he triumphed with the top prize. He has contributed guitar work to performances by such artists as John Lee Hooker, Dr. John, Levon Helm, Art Neville, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Snooks Eaglin, Cassandra Wilson, Earl King, and Johnny Adams, among others. He has also performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Meters, Johnny Winter, Gregg Allman, Billy Preston, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Neville Brothers, and Leon Russell.

I just received the debut release, Unleashed, from the Hound Kings and I gotta say it's really super! The Hound Kings are carving their own niche in the blues world and seems like they have it all to themselves. They are presenting a fresh look at traditional style blues tracks. Opening with SSI Blues, Alabama Mike leads the way with clear natural vocals accompanied by Anthony Paule on acoustic slide and Scott Brenton on harp. These guys have taken a familiar pattern (Can't Be Satisfied) and created a brand new track worthy to hold it's own as a new track.I really like it. Drunk Honey Bee is up next and a really cool track. Each of the players are really perfect on their respective parts. Another Morganfield styled track, this is another really great song. I will say that I really prefer the originality of players who take roots of music and build something original (when it's done as nicely as it's done here) to a cover of the original in most cases. This sounds very fresh. Come Go Home With Me actually has sounds of Rolling Stones to it but yet done in a primitive blues style... very nice. The Real McCoy has a bit more of a contemporary sound but still with simple acoustic accompaniment and harp. Don't Drag My Love Down is a really cool blues track with a pop edge. It puts me in mind of one of my acoustic rock favorites, Jonathan Edwards. Again, the band is tight and nothing is wasted. Recession Blues could be right from the Robert Johnson song book with the perfect melody and turn. Brenton plays really well over the vocals and Paule knows just how to keep the guitar rhythm on track. The Thang has a lot of the feel of Van Morrison. You may say that it's a stretch but that's what I hear. This is a very strong bluesy ballad. You Got Issues is a really nice R&B style track which really highlights Alabama Mikes vocals. You Gotta Move, the Fred McDowell and Gary Davis track is given a facelift and much closer to the original than to later covers. It has a nice Piedmont pace and Paule blows a cool solo on the track. Really nice and worthwhile cover. Finishing up with Mercy Dee Walton's Red Light, this is a track that would be well suited for Little Richard or Hound Dog Taylor. This is a great conclusion to this really super recording in a strong blues rocker fashion. Brenton has an other opportunity to play out his harp and does a really nice job. I know that I haven't done this recording justice because I really like it but can't really describe to any degree how good it is. If you like hot acoustic blues...this may be the cd of the year! ~Review by Bman

Mighty Tight Woman from 1967 represents the unusual marriage of the classic blues era with the urban folk revival of the '60s, pitting a couple of blues legends with their improbable inheritors. The star of the album is Sippie Wallace, one of the original "red hot mamas" of the '20s and '30s vaudeville circuit, who cut her first record ("Up the Country") in 1923; rediscovered in 1965 and performing again, she is joined here by the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, with whom she also teamed up for a couple of live shows. The record attracted little attention, but it did manage to showcase the abilities and personality of the 69-year-old blueswoman, who surely enjoyed strutting her stuff with her young white hippie admirers; furthermore, four tracks boast first-rate accompaniment by Otis Spann, Muddy Waters' exemplary pianist. On these tracks, above all, Wallace seems wonderfully in her element. The Jug Band themselves have the good sense to remain on the sidelines for the most part (compared with their usual over-the-top exuberance), allowing the veteran Wallace to do her own thing, performing in classic blues style. The album's repertoire consists largely of Wallace's earlier tunes, including "Up the Country," "Special Delivery," and the title track; also included is her tribute to the modern-day Joe Lewis, Mohammed Ali. In the final cut - the jazz standard "Everybody Loves My Baby (But My Baby Don't Love Nobody But Me)" - Kweskin and company do join in full swing, offering a magnificent duet between kazoo and comb; the band also fares pretty well on "Separation Blues," in which vocalist Maria Mulduar lends a nice support to Wallace's refrain. All in all, Mighty Tight Woman is not a must-have on anyone's list, but it is probably much more overlooked than it deserves. The unlikely three-way collaboration shows a more serious and subtle side of Kweskin's Jug Band, and - most importantly - it provides a welcome new vehicle and audience for both Wallace and Spann, two legitimate blues masters. Lil Green (December 22, 1919 – April 14, 1954) was an American blues singer and songwriter. She was among the leading female rhythm and blues singers of the 1940s, possessed with an ability to bring power to ordinary material and compose superior songs of her own.

Originally named Lillian Green, she was born in Mississippi; after the early deaths of her parents, she went to Chicago, Illinois, where she began performing in her teens and where she would make all of her recordings.

Green was noted for superb timing and a distinctively sinuous voice. She was 18 when she recorded her first session for the 35 cent Bluebird subsidiary of RCA. In the 1930s she and Big Bill Broonzy had a night club act together. Her two biggest hits were, firstly, her own composition "Romance in the Dark" (1940), which was later covered by many artists, such as Dinah Washington and Nina Simone (in 1967), although Billie Holiday also recorded a different song with the same name. Then came Green's own (1941) version of Kansas Joe McCoy's minor key blues and jazz influenced song, "Why Don't You Do Right?", which was covered by Peggy Lee in 1942 and many others since. As well as performing in Chicago clubs, Green toured with Tiny Bradshaw and other bands, but never really broke away from the black theatre circuit.

Although Green signed with Atlantic Records in 1951, she was already in poor health. She died in Chicago in 1954 of pneumonia, at the age of 34, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Gary, Indiana.

Eric & Suzy Thompson continue their long-standing love affair with Southern music of the 1920's and 30's, at the intersection of country blues, old-time string band music, and Cajun songs. "Dream Shadows" takes a stripped down approach to production – no big name special guests, no fancy arrangements, just old time music the way Eric & Suzy play and sing it whether at home or on stage, using guitars, fiddle, Cajun accordion, banjo, mandolin, etc. This is roots music from an era when record companies were still willing to record quirky, intensely personal and exotic sounds and had not yet adopted the "one size fits all" philosophy.

Willie Borum, better known under his recording sobriquet of Memphis Willie B., was a mainstay of the Memphis blues and jug band circuit. Adept at both harmonica and guitar, Borum could add pep to any combination he worked in, as well as leaving a striking impression as a solo artist.

He was born in 1911 in Shelby County, Tennessee. He took to the guitar early in his childhood, being principally taught by his father and Memphis medicine show star Jim Jackson. By his late teens, he was working with Jack Kelly's Jug Busters, working for tips on the street with the occasional house party and country supper rounding out his meager paycheck. This didn't last long, as Borum joined up with the Memphis Jug Band, one of two outfits in existence at that time. The group frequently worked what later became W.C. Handy Park in Memphis, with touring stretching all the way down to New Orleans during the Mardi Gras. Sometime in the '30s he learned to play harmonica, being taught by no less a master than Noah Lewis, the best harp blower in Memphis and mainstay of Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers.

As his style began to move further away from a strict jug band approach, Willie B. began working on and off with various traveling Delta bluesmen, performing at various functions with Rice Miller, Willie Brown, Garfield Akers, and Robert Johnson. He finally got to make some records in New York under his own name in 1934 for Vocalion, but quickly moved back into playing juke joints and gambling houses with Son Joe, Joe Hill Louis, and Will Shade until around 1943, when he became a member of the U.S. Army.

It was a much different world he returned to and after a brief fling at trying to pick up where he left off, Borum soon cashed in his chips and started looking for a day job. That would have been the end of the story, except in 1961 -- with the folk and blues revival in full hootenanny steam -- Borum was tracked down and recorded an absolutely marvelous session at the Sun studios for Prestige's Bluesville label. It turned into a little bit of a career upswing for the next few years; Willie B. started working the festival and coffeehouse circuit with old Memphis buddies Gus Cannon and Furry Lewis. But then just as quickly, he dropped out of the music scene and eventually out of sight altogether. Willie B. reportedly died in Memphis during the early '70s. ~bio by Cub Koda

07. What You Gonna Do [4:10]
08. They Called Him Junior [3:41]
09. Electric Cigarette Blues [2:35]
10. Hacksaw [2:01]

Fine fingerpicking and 10 Book Binder originals to put a smile on your face.
This is a fine album by finger style-guitarist Book Binder(think Rev. Gary Davis) and he composed ten numbers in this all-too-short album (just 28 minutes). There are "hokum" string band songs like "It Coulda Been Worse" and old-style humor on contemporary subjects ("Electric Cigarette Blues"). Paying tribute to those guitarists who came before him, Book Binder composed "They Called Him Junior", the subject being Robert Lockwood Jr., who played for free every Wednesday night at the Catfish Blue Restaurant in Cleveland until he died in 2006.

Notes: On National Public Radio’s Fresh Air, rock historian Ed Ward listed, among the most important bands of the early 60’s, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Byrds, “and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band.” Ward added: “I’m not kidding.”

Listening to the music here, you’ll understand why he wasn’t kidding. Jim Kweskin continues to perform his vast repertoire of folk, blues, swing, jug band and early standards with his own brand of infectious personal interpretations. His guitar finger picking of songs like Some of These Days and Exactly Like You is recognized by his peers and fans as some of the best there is. His selection of songs is vividly evocative of his many diverse influences such as Louis Jordan, Clancy Hayes, Fats Wallter, Milton Brown, Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby and Pete Seeger.

Backed by the Jim Kweskin Band, a group of extraordinary musicians, this album features four tracks taken from Jim’s Now And Again album and three tracks from Samoa Wilson’s Live The Life album.

We feel confident that when you listen to this wonderful collection of songs you will certainly “enjoy yourself.”

Although Hammond had already recorded electric material, he went back to a solo acoustic format for his fourth album, accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica on faithful interpretations of standards by Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, John Lee Hooker, Sleepy John Estes, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, and Bo Diddley. If it sounds a bit unimaginative and routine today, one has to remember that the general listening audience was much less aware of these artists and songs in the mid-'60s. Hammond did a commendable job of rendering them here, with fine guitar work and vocals that were a considerable improvement over his earliest efforts.

Notes: Brian Curran is in his thirties, but don't let that fool you. Brian has been studying blues and fingerstyle guitar for almost 20 years. He keeps his feet planted firmly in the sounds of the past but is not afraid to put his own stamp on the music he loves.
Brian has performed at some of the area's top venues including Off Broadway, The Pageant, B.B.'s Jazz Blues & Soups and many more. Brian is also not just a one man show. In addition to playing solo, he is well known as a duo with Adam Andrews on harmonica.
Brian also travels regionally. On stage Brian puts on a great show and always gets the audience involved. He is known to sometimes tell as many stories and jokes to the listeners as songs. Altogether, whether solo or with a band, you can't go wrong no matter what your taste in music might be. Going to see Brian is just a plain old fun time.

Made Myself Lonesome contains 15 cuts of the gritty, beutiful, funny, heartfelt, homemade blues Brian is known for.
Brian has sharpened his performing and writeing skills in the clubs and concert stages of St. Louis and surrounding areas for the past 8 years. He cotinues to grow and add to his reputation with the release of Made Myself Lonesome
The songs run the gamut from the heartfelt slow finger-picking style of the original title track to the pounding take of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" to the quiet beauty of another original "Who Gives This Bride" plus a generous dose of Brian's take on Mississippi John Hurt, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell.

12. Drunken Spree - 3:35
13. Black Gal - 3:17
14. Illinois Blues - 3:06
15. Worried Blues - 3:29

Notes: By the time James had been rediscovered in the 1960s, he was still capable of playing entrancing, dynamic music, but was much less consistent and not as striking a vocalist. It was a testimony to his greatness that he still managed to make compelling records, and he was among the best storytellers and dramatic singers in the traditional realm. This mid-'60s CD features songs James recorded for the Adelphi label in 1964 that were never issued. It's hard to understand why this wasn't issued at the time it was recorded; it's just as solid as the albums James recorded for Columbia during the same period. ~by Ron Wynn

Tony 'Little Son' Glover - harmonica (1,4,13)

Notes: The dark glasses and Phillies ce-gar on the cover photo of Spider Blues can't begin to hide the barely-contained raw energy of the young man behind them. It's easy to see that Spider John Koerner has the world by the tail, and is ready to jump head first into whatever comes next. Jump, flash, snap, pop, and strut is exactly what he does on this mostly-solo album, with sharp, percussive country blues guitar picking and tight, energetic vocals, complemented nicely by Tony “Little Son” Glover’s harmonica on three outstanding numbers including the opener, Good Luck Child, and the title cut, Spider Blues.

Hearing this album for the first time nearly forty years ago, the only stuff that came close to it for me on the “can’t-sit-still” scale were the early works of Taj Mahal, John Mayall, and Cream. For the sheer punch of an unaccompanied performance, though, I still haven’t found anything to touch it since then. It’s incredible that this nugget hasn’t been re-released on CD. Aside from the history, there’s nothing dated about it; and it richly deserves a newer, wider audience with the same kind of juice that it exudes. ~ Pap-a-lap. Apr 26, 2009 (discogs.com)

Thad Beckman & Danny Montgomery - When The Sun Goes Down

In the age of sampled sounds and digital wizardry comes an album of acoustic blues from two masters of their craft. You'll forget that you're listening to just two guys playing drums, guitar, and singing the blues. Honest, simple, and stripped down.

Chances are you've heard Thad Beckman or Danny Montgomery before. Each is a veteran of the music industry with recording and touring credits too long to list. But when they decided to record an album of acoustic blues -- with just a single guitar and drums for instrumentation -- everyone involved with the project knew that the two friends and masters of their craft were going to produce something special, and they did not disappoint. Combining classic blues covers with six of Thad's original songs, Beckman and Montgomery have compiled a tremendously rich live recording that seems too sonically complete to be coming from just two guys playing in the same room at the same time. You won't find any digital wizardry or post-production magic here. None of that was necessary. And though it took a long time for the planets (and touring schedules) to align so that these two legendary musicans could finally record an album together, everyone agrees that it was well worth the wait.

Notes: Award winning Blues artist, Brian Fraser, releases his 3rd, and most complete solo album to date.

Brian hails from the Geelong region of Victoria and was the former lead singer and guitarist with popular regional Victorian act, Turning Blue.

As the title states, Brian's new album is filled with both fingerpickin' guitar playing and Blues, all sung in his easy-going vocal style. Also of note is Brian’s moody slide guitar playing (check out his version of Driftin’ Blues).
Brian’s own observations range from the joys of life as a touring musician (10 O’Clock Call) to the protest at the demolition of a historic homestead (Well's Station). All are slices of the life of a travelling musician, which Brian most certainly is. His touring schedule is exhaustive and takes him to all corners of Australia.

Recorded by award winning Blues recording engineer, Robert B. Dillon, "Fingerpickin' Blues" is an album that highlights the talents of yet another major Australian Blues talent.

Eleven previously unrecorded songs. Recorded in San Francisco, New Zealand and Australia with Peter Grayling. Olsen on guitar, steelbody slide guitar, concertina, hammered dulcimer and voice. Grayling adds cello, mandocello, mandolin, and harmony vocals to nine of the tracks. 'The Truth of a Woman' includes nine Olsen originals including an instrumental. 'The Truth of a Woman' was #1 in surveyed folk radio airplay in November '99 and #3 in October.

Olsen is a powerfully engaging performer with a raw blues velvet voice and brilliant guitar skills (on acoustic an steel-body slide guitar). Her songs have been covered by the likes of Fairport Convention and Mollie O'Brien. Olsen also is known for her abilities on other instruments and has recorded on hammered dulcimer with Michele Shocked and worked with Rickie Lee Jones. 'The Truth of a Woman' is Olsen's eighth recording under her own name. Four of her recordings have been released by Philo/Rounder.

Grayling takes an instrument rarely seen off the classical stage and weaves it through Olsen's songs, enriching the ballads with a gorgeous, mellow sound and driving the blues with punchy playing and recklessly passionate solos. Grayling was formerly the principal cellist with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra and now currently does contract work for the Western Australian Symphony when he isn't on tour with Olsen. He was described in Australian press as the 'Jimi Hendrix of cello'.

'The Truth of a Woman' is the second collaboration between Olsen and Grayling. They released 'Duet' in 1998 in Australia, New Zealand and the UK to great critical acclaim.

The best early works of this folk-blues artist. Acoustic and essential.

With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-'60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. Within the first decade of his career as a performer, Hammond began crafting a niche for himself that is completely his own: the solo guitar man, harmonica slung in a rack around his neck, reinterpreting classic blues songs from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. ~From the bio by Richard Skelly

Notes: With the upcoming release of their new album, Carry Me Back, it looks like Old Crow Medicine Show have retaken the mantle of American roots music superstars, and they’re doing so by going back to their roots as a tough-as-nails old-timey stringband. After 2008?s disappointing Tennessee Pusher, and after a hiatus from touring over band members leaving and returning, it’s about damn time! The only downside to the new album is that it doesn’t really reflect the current lineup of the group. Since Carry Me Back was recorded, founding members Critter Fuqua and Ketch Secor have been reunited after years of separation. Founding member Willie Watson has parted ways with the group, as has mandolinist Cory Younts, and though you won’t hear him on this album, old-time fiddle prodigy Chance McCoy has now joined the band. But so what? We’ll be happy when a newer album comes out with the current lineup, of course, but this one will tide us over nicely until then.
Newer member, songwriter Gill Landry, remains on Carry Me Back, and on the new album has more of a hand in the songwriting, which is good news. Landry was an amazing signing for the group, though it went largely unnoticed by national press. Originally Cajun, Landry should be well known to any roots music fan in the Northwest from his solo work and his work with the legendary street performing jugband The Kitchen Syncopators. Their last album, Underwood, now sadly out of print, is one of my favorite roots music releases of the past decade. Hands down. It’s that good. Check out this interview by Chris Mateer of No Depression to get a better idea of who Gill Landry is. On the new album, Gill takes on the beautiful and rather sad song “Genevieve,” and I believe brings in a Syncopators song, “Steppin’ Out.” Anyways, I’m not clear on all the politics behind these changes, but it sure looks to me like Old Crow’s circling the wagons and focusing inwards on what they do best: punked-out stringband music.
On Carry Me Back, the group sounds more acoustic than ever, focusing on the hordes of banjo, guit-jos, and banjo-what-have-yous that gives them much of their rhythmic punch. Ketch Secor’s rough-as-fuck fiddling is back, which was always one of my favorite parts of the band. In truth, this album is seriously folkie. It sounds like a 21-st century version of Woody Guthrie’s vision, all hopped up on populist pride and pissed-off that times they aren’t a-changin’. “Half Mile Down” sounds like a 70s folk stringband, but the lyrics rage against flooded valleys from government dams. “We Don’t Grow Tobacco,” one of the best tracks on the album, sounds like a drunken barroom brawl and focuses its energy on out-of-work farmers. “I will chop that wicked weed/til my hands and fingers bleed/Workin’ like a mule/maybe more... And I sure am sad to say/We don’t grow tobacco ‘round here no more.” But it’s not all working-class politics. Old Crow Medicine Show cut their teeth on slice-of-life Southern folk songs and there’s plenty of that too, from the title track “Carry Me Back” which sounds like an Appalachian old-time song to “Steppin’ Out,” which could have just as easily been recorded by the Memphis Jug Band back in the day. On other bands, this kind of Southern nostalgia would come off as a bit forced, but the beauty of Old Crow Medicine Show is that they’re having too much goddamn fun to care, and their infectious joy in their own music swings the listener along with them. It’s good to have you back, boys!

Notes: If the mention of "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas" starts you humming "Barbecue" or chuckling at the Riverbottom Nightmare Band, then you are a tailor-made fan for the Juggernaut Jug Band. Even if you have no idea who Emmet Otter is (shame on you!), you still need to hear Jugstaposition, simply because you'll walk away with a bigger smile on your face.
The JJB has been around in various incarnations for about 30 years, and anyone remotely familiar with the Louisville music scene knows the JJB's reputation for providing good music and a good time. That joyous feeling is captured well on Jugstaposition. The quartet - Gil Fish, Roscoe Goose, World Wide Webb and Big Daddy - throw a smorgasbord of musical styles and instruments into the pot and cook up a mighty tasty musical stew.
The band's throwback sound is in perfect harmony with the style made popular on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, which will hopefully be an avenue for the JJB to welcome new fans. First-timers will find a lot to their liking: the peppy "Old Joe's Hittin' the Jug," the sweet-sounding "Hamburger Pie" and even a creative rendition of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row," part of which is sung to the tune of "Ghostriders in the Sky."
Don't think for a second that there's anything gimmicky about the band's musical repertoire. The JJB is able to combine a freewheeling spirit and infectious looseness with seriously honed musical abilities. The result is a music experience that's not only fun, but is well done. It's refreshing to listen to a band of any musical style that can have this kind of serious fun. ~ Kory Wilcoxson (louisvillemusicnews.net)

Gritty original lyrics are the centerpiece to this album recorded in southern Illinois, near the Kentucky boarder. This album is chalked full of passion and fire. Recorded in just eleven days, a group of approximately a dozen gifted musicians bring a heart-wrenching intensity to the performance and delivery of these twelve songs; so much so that the listener is hard-pressed not to feel the sincerity and truth that runs throughout this songwriter's poignant depictions. Lead instruments range from stellar acoustic and electric guitar work, to outstanding harmonica and trumpet performances. The percussion throughout the disc is creative and inventive with a steadiness that creates a perfect foundation for this project to build upon. This recording possesses an almost live feel and dynamic, while maintaining a tightness only found when skilled musicians are completely immersed in their creative process. Definitely a rare gem that any music lover will be glad to have stumbled across. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Notes: The day of the travellin' man, the wandering troubador, has long since faded into history. In the early years (at the beginning of the century, give or take a few months!), when the blues were sprouting wings, the wandering musician was a not unfamiliar sight trudging the southern roads, "ridin' the rods" from one lonely whistle stop to another. These men were constantly moving ("I gotta move on down the lines" is a traditional lyric which has a number of meaning for the blues artist). In fact the migrant bluesman became part of the blues folklore. Most jazz fans and writers are incurable romantics (and what is wrong with a little romance in this grim modern world?), and undoubtebly the picture of the wanderer was an attrective one... ~ Derrick Stewart-Baxter (album back cover)

Brother Dege - Folk Songs Of The American Longhair

Bitrate: 320K/s
Time: 44:45
Size: 102.5 MB
Styles: Acoustic/electric delta blues
Year: 2010
Art: Front

[3:33] 1. Hard Row To Hoe
[3:15] 2. The Girl Who Wept Stones
[3:43] 3. Too Old To Die Young
[3:38] 4. To Fill A Hole
[8:10] 5. House Of The Dying Sun
[5:18] 6. The Battle Of New Orleans
[2:48] 7. Dead & Gone
[2:34] 8. The World's Longest Hotdog
[5:24] 9. Old Angel Midnight
[6:19] 10. Black Is The Night

Brother Dege Legg is known for being the main man in the band Santaria, a psyouthern / swampadelic band formed in 1994 that rocked a decade of gigs, madness, tours, voodoo curses, and wrecked vans.

Brother Dege's Folk Songs of the American Longhair is a tour de force artwork that brings it all back home to the Deep South like the possessed incarnation of Robert Johnson and Son House. This is the REAL deal. Dege Legg (aka Brother Dege), the Cajun born and Louisiana raised leader of the band Santeria, recorded the album in a shed behind his house in southern Louisiana. Co-produced by by 4x Grammy-winner Tony Daigle (Dr. John, Sonny Landreth, Gatemouth Brown, Bobby Charles), Santeria lead-guitarist Primo and Legg, Folk Songs of the American Longhair set the new bar for the next 100 years of slide-based Delta blues. Legg composed ten original tunes in the slide-Delta tradition, painstakingly paying tribute to the old masters while tossing all purist, karaoke-like tendencies to the wind. Think Son House meets Leonard Cohen at a hoodoo seance in the swamps. Slide players from the U.S. to Europe are already covering the tunes - and the record isn't even out yet - via a series of live Brother Dege youtube videos which have garnered over 150,000 plays with no promotional hype or jive.

Much like the field recordings of Alan Lomax, the record tunnels into the ancient mysteries of pre-war blues and the devil-obsessed masters. Recorded in sheds, old houses and open fields for maximum intensity. There's minimal instrumentation on this thing. In a return to the unprocessed basics, almost all of the tracks feature only one vocal, one slide guitar and one foot stomping. That's it. Listeners are in for a treat when they hear how the music sounds, writhing about in the echo chamber of reality when stripped of all the studio trickery of the past decade.

Toon Engelbertink - violin

Notes: We've already had an American in Paris, but a Dutchman in Vienna? And one who has dedicated himself, body and soul, to American blues and roots music? Okay, Hans Theessink (pronounced Tay-sink) did not pick the easiest way to do this, but he has done so with a certain degree of single-mindedness.

Like others of his generation, in the early 1960‘s a love of the Blues took hold of the man whom Bo Diddley described as "one helluva guitar player", and it has not let go since. Above all, the country blues with its earthy and heartfelt sound impressed Hans Theessink and played a major role in his development as a musician. His roots are unmistakenly in the blues, but has also been influenced by countless other aspects of roots music. This musical variety has become a trademark of Hans Theessink, who as a songwriter has succeeded in building bridges to the present in addressing issues which reflect the reality of the here and now.
Hans is probably Europe's bluesexport Nr.1 - one of the top blues and roots musicians worldwide who has entertained audiences around the globe during a musical career that spans over more than 35 years. The world's leading bluespaper - US magazine Blues Revue wrote: "Hans Theessink is an international blues treasure. He is one of the world's pre-eminent country pickers and his warm baritone expresses blues".

Theessink's first recording was an EP in 1970. Since then his music has continually developed and so far Hans has released 20 albums, a songbook, a blues-guitar instruction video and a DVD. His CDs are guaranteed award winners. "Banjoman", the tribute project to Derroll Adams, that Hans produced with Arlo Guthrie, was recently nominated for a Grammy.
In 2004 Hans got the Austrian Amadeus award for "Songs from the Southland", a tribute to the music of the American South - a constant source of inspiration and companion on his musical journey. A Danish Music Award for best bluesalbum followed in 2005. His most recent CD "Bridges" - a recording with the new Hans Theessink Band, is again nominated for the Amadeus in the category best Blues-, Jazz-, Roots-, Folk-album. Hans' latest work is a DVD "Live in Concert" - "A Blues & Roots Revue" - it shows the Hans Theessink Band in action + lots of other special features. Hans' productions are known for their excellent sound quality and are also in big demand in HiFi circles.

Through his unmistakable guitarwork, sonorous baritone voice and stage presence, Hans has attained a status which is unique for a European. He has performed at many of the most prominent North American music festivals such as the "New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival", the "Chicago Blues Festival", the "Kerville Folk Festival", the "Toronto Soul & Blues Festival", the "Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival", the "Edmonton Folk Festival", the "St.Louis Blues & Heritage Festival", the "King Biscuit Blues Festival", the "Woody Guthrie Festival" and the "Ultimate Rhythm and Blues Cruise" to name a few.

Hans Theessink has become one of the most sought-after artists of the international blues scene. He is more or less constantly "on tour" and plays an average of 200 concerts a year - a modern day troubadour and entertainer who keeps on spellbinding audiences all over the world with his rich and emotional sounds. ~ theessink.com

Little G Weevil - Moving

Size: 92,4 MB
Time: 39:54
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2013
Styles: Acoustic Blues
Label: VizzTone
Art: Front

01. Shook It And Broke It (3:17)
02. On My Way To Memphis (4:02)
03. Mean And Dirty (5:26)
04. Boogie Through My Troubles (3:00)
05. Let Someone Else Do All The Work (1:42)
06. Deep Bow (2:57)
07. Advice (1:46)
08. Moving (3:53)
09. No Man In My Bed (2:00)
10. Fastest Man (2:09)
11. Let's Talk It Over (Come Back Baby) (4:15)
12. Swing In The Middle (5:21)

Winner of the 2013 International Blues Challenge for solo/duo, Little G Weevil obviously impressed Richard Rosenblatt of VizzTone, not simply winning but also the fact that he bested the duo of Erin Harpe and Rosenblatt on his way to winning. The result is his VizzTone debut, Moving. Weevil is an impressive, traditionally rooted blues artist who was born overseas, but has immersed himself in playing the blues in Memphis and Atlanta. He impressed many with his prior recordings where he displayed his mastery of older blues traditions including marvelous originals that evoked early John Lee Hooker.

The present release will certainly cause additional fans of blues to take notice of his talents. This is apparent on the original Shook It and Broke It, that opens this. His slide guitar accompaniment suggests Fred McDowell and Bukka White on a song that sounds like it was from the thirties. He adroit use of repetition and riffs is exhibited on On My Way To Memphis, with some nifty guitar lines set against a repeated riff, while a small group provides him with an insistent pulse on Mean and Dirty. Within these three songs we get quite a varied look at Lil G Weevil's approach that is manifested throughout this collection. Other selections include the North Mississippi Hills groove on Deep Bow and the title track with hints of swamp pop with a lazy walking groove and some Slim Harpo styled harmonica. Another highpoint is his deliberative, reflective interpretation of Walter Davis' classic Let's Talk It Over (Come Back Baby).

Moving is another substantial recording by Lil G Weevil who demonstrates an uncanny ability to cast original down-home blues styled in the manner played decades ago by blues legends and perform with authority and soul. He is a most impressive talent. ~Review by Ron W

This album contains 2 never before recorded originals! 8 (total) songs never recorded before by "The Book"! and 7 'covers' of old hit tunes that are some of Roy's favorites dating back to his early years. This disc includes lots of stories, a few good laughs, and plenty of guitar pickin, with 72 minutes in all for your listening pleasure, and a a short introduction by Jorma Kaukonen!

"These songs are all favorites of mine. Some I have never recorded before, some I learned from my early out-of-print albums and some were "revealed to me." Every song has a story of how I came to choose it or, in some cases, how it came to choose me! Sharing these memories with all of you is my greatest pleasure.
Forty years ago, traveling with Reverend Gary Davis, struggling to learn a new chord or melody, I could never have imagined I would become a "known person" and that this adventure would lead me to perfoming in front of enthusiastic audiences around the world. I could have never dreamed that many of my heroes would end up being my pals.
I do hope this album will give you a glimpse of how I feel about my music, my audience and my involvement with the Fur Peace Ranch. I am very pleased with this project and am proud to let you experience some of the joys of my world, which could not exist without you." (~Roy Bookbinder)

"I met Roy a couple of years ago at a Jorma Kaukonen guitar workshop. I'd never heard of him before and was delighted to make his acquaintance and hear his music. Great guitarist, expressive vocalist, and man, what a storyteller! This live album is one of my few go-to favorites, for both the music and his stories. I doubt anyone would be disappointed after buying it." (~~Customer Review)

Notes: The Even Dozen Jug Band was founded in 1963 by the great country blues and ragtime guitarists Stephan Grossman and Peter Siegel in New York City. An old timey super-group of sorts, its members included John Sebastian (who later formed the Lovin' Spoonful), mandolinist extraordinaire David Grisman, guitarist Steve Katz (later with Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears), vocalist Maria D'Amato (who later became singing star Maria Muldaur), and famed American musicologist and pianist Joshua Rifkin. The band was short lived and in 1964 released their only album, the highly influential "Jug Band Songs Of The Southern Mountains". The group made numerous appearances on television and performed at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City. All selections newly remastered. ~ amazon

Notes: Bjorn is a solo acoustic guitar player from Norway and a real showman.
Bj?rn Berge hails from Norway and the best way to describe label Berge is "one man band". Berge is a Blues musician performing solo with his 12 string acoustic guitar accompanied only by his southern rock alike vocal and him tapping on a flightcase.
Berge makes the best outta these simple means. This is a live recording from Belgium and its back to the basics. Of course Berge is limited in his musical expression and therefore he tends to sound a bit monotonous at times.
However, Berge manages to give the listener the feeling of sitting in the Belgian club with a Duvel beer enjoying the show. Its raw, honest and unpretentious acoustic blues rock with lots of slide guitar.

Notes: The Best of Blues label celebrated the year 2000 with a Washboard Sam collection containing 21 of his best performances recorded between 1936 and 1947, a span of years that takes in much of his recording career. The selections are divided equally, for the most part, between Sam's two preferred tempos: the slow purposeful ambling gait and the upbeat rocking shuffle that can make your feet start patting the floor before you even realize that you're doing it. This is an excellent way to find out about Washboard Sam, or to enjoy a well-chosen overview of his works even if you're already hip to him. Washboard Sam was born with the name Robert Brown in Walnut Ridge, AR, in 1910. He worked his way north, hit Chicago in the early '30s, and made his first records for the Vocalion label under the name of Ham Gravy in 1935. Although he was a tireless virtuoso washboard operator, it was Sam's powerful voice and a knack for coming up with songs that everybody could relate to that created a growing demand for his records. Almost invariably accompanied on the guitar by his friend Big Bill Broonzy, Washboard Sam soon established himself as a primary blues recording artist for the Bluebird label, switched over to Victor in 1947, and stopped recording for the most part in 1949. After becoming a Chicago policeman (a job for which he seems to have been suited both physically and temperamentally), Robert Brown changed back into Washboard Sam in 1953 for long enough to record with Broonzy and Memphis Slim. His final comeback during the 1960s ended with his death from heart failure in November 1966 at the age of 56. This little taste of Sam's special kind of music has a supporting cast of instrumentalists including Herb Morand, trumpeter for the Harlem Hamfats; ubiquitous Chicago session clarinetist Arnett Nelson; saxophonists Buster Bennett and J.T. Brown; pianists Roosevelt Sykes, Memphis Slim, and Black Bob Hudson; and bassists Ransom Knowling and Willie Dixon. The woman whose vocal interjections are heard on "Ain't You Coming Out Tonight" has been identified as Josephine Kyles. This useful and entertaining Washboard Sam collection may be supplemented with Document's seven-volume series containing more than 160 examples of his unforgettably honest and passionate blues. ~ AMG

The title to the contrary, "I Have to Paint My Face": Mississippi Blues -- 1960 also includes recordings from California and Lousiana; regardless, these field recordings collected by Arhoolie label founder Chris Strachwitz are invaluable documents of gifted bluesmen who otherwise received virtually no opportunities to record their music. They include Sam Chatmon, Robert Curtis Smith, Wade Walton and Jasper Love. (~~Jason Ankeny)

"In the summer of 1960 I had made my first trip through Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi with British blues scholar, Paul Oliver and his wife Valerie. Paul's homework and dedication to meet, interview and record a good many older blues artists for a series of programs sponsored by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was in large measure responsible for the success of that first trip. This CD brings you the sounds of the Mississippi blues as we were able to meet and document them during that very hot and humid summer. The rediscovery of several historic blues legends like Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Big Boy Crudup along with the discovery of the remarkable Fred McDowell, was still to come!" (~~Excerpt from liner notes by Chris Strachwitz)

"...wonderful music, not only Chatmon's poignant and sometimes bitter songs but also driving and exciting sides by Robert Curtis Smith, the famous barber Wade Walton and Jasper Love; very few of these artists had other opportunities to make more recordings and that's a great pity...everything is excellent and there are no low points. Another one to get, definitely." (~~Robert Sacré, Blues Gazette)

Cat Iron, real name William Carradine ['Cat Iron' was not his actual nickname, but a mishearing of his surname by his "rediscoverer"], (c. 1896, Garden City, Louisiana, United States – c. 1958, Natchez, Mississippi) was an African-American blues singer and guitarist.

During the folk and blues revival, "Cat Iron" was "discovered" and recorded in 1957 by Frederic Ramsey Jr.; the recordings were released in the United States in 1958 on the Folkways label, in the United Kingdom in 1969 on the XTRA label. His song, "Jimmy Bell" has been covered by many other musicians, first by Koerner, Ray & Glover on their 1963 album, Blues, Rags and Hollers, later by Stoney & Meatloaf, The Numbers Band, Peter Lang, The Sharks, Tom Doughty and Watermelon Slim.

Big Bill Broonzy was born William Lee Conley Broonzy in the tiny town of Scott, Mississippi, just across the river from Arkansas. During his childhood, Broonzy's family -- itinerant sharecroppers and the descendants of ex-slaves -- moved to Pine Bluff to work the fields there. Broonzy learned to play a cigar box fiddle from his uncle, and as a teenager, he played violin in local churches, at community dances, and in a country string band. During World War I, Broonzy enlisted in the U.S. Army, and in 1920 he moved to Chicago and worked in the factories for several years. In 1924 he met Papa Charlie Jackson, a New Orleans native and pioneer blues recording artist for Paramount. Jackson took Broonzy under his wing, taught him guitar, and used him as an accompanist. Broonzy's entire first session at Paramount in 1926 was rejected, but he returned in November 1927 and succeeded in getting his first record, House Rent Stomp, onto Paramount wax. As one of his early records came out with the garbled moniker of Big Bill Broomsley, he decided to shorten his recording name to Big Bill, and this served as his handle on records until after the second World War. Among aliases used for Big Bill on his early releases were Big Bill Johnson, Sammy Sampson, and Slim Hunter. ~excerpt from the bio by Uncle Dave Lewis

Known internationally in his profession as the “Doctor of the Blues,” Marshall Lawrence operates with a guitar instead of medical instruments. The Canadian Ph.D. in Psychology espouses a holistic approach to music that not only cures what ails you, but is a preventative as well. His latest release follows the critical accolades for Where’s the Party (2003), The Morning After (2008) and Blues Intervention (2010) with a timely visit from the good doctor.
The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist presents 11 originals and two covers spanning acousticcountry blues and R&B backed by Dave “Hurricane” Hoerl (harmonica), Russell Jackson (upright bass), David Aide (Hammond B-3 organ), Barry Allen (background vocals), Dwayne Hrinkiw (drums) and special guests, the legendary Holmes Brothers. The toe-tapping hoedown of “Mean Momma Blues” dares you to sit still as Lawrence, Hoerl and Jackson raise a ruckus while the leader files a classic complaint against his woman in his understated drawl. His urgent slide guitar in dynamic stop-time helps drive home the kissoff in “I Got to Ramble” with “You cook my dinner, but you don’t bake my bread…I’ve had enough of your cold, cold bed.” The Holmes Brothers lend their heavenly gospel harmonies to sweeten the raw Delta shuffle of “Factory Closing Blues” as Lawrence throws down a poisonous indictment at the feet of hard-hearted big business. “Please Help Me Find My Way Home” rocks with an easy shuffle beat under Lawrence in his plea to a “brother” for assistance in getting his debauched life back on the path with Hoerl and Aide offering gentle instrumental encouragement.
The surging “The Ballad of Molly Brown” rolls and tumbles with the authenticity for which Lawrence is justly lauded, his deftly-picked rhythm and slide guitars driving him back to Molly with palpable energy. Striking Latin rhythms and inventive minor key melodies inform “Biscuit Rolling Daddy” with a poignancy rarely encountered in a braggadocio blues. The insinuating slow tempo of “Rich Man Can’t Get the Blues” provides the proper musical venue for Lawrence to show sympathy for “rich and poor, black and white” and for Hoerl to give out with his most expressive “Mississippi saxophone” solo. Lawrence flaunts his Delta blues virtuosity on Tommy Johnson’s classic “Canned Heat Blues,” his drop D-tuned axe sprinkling sparkling notes on top of the simultaneously thumping chordal accompaniment.
“I Wanna Love You” has Lawrence spouting sly euphemisms over his bump and grind acoustic guitar flavored with slide and mandolin as Hoerl twists his lusty harp over and around the proceedings. “Another Saturday Night” mixes an amazing combination of poly-rhythms courtesy of layered guitars to evoke the anticipation of an end of work week good time. Bittersweet longings lyrically and instrumentally blend expressively in “Long Way Back Home,” the chugging rhythm of his cleanly-picked acoustic guitar replicating the sound of a train steaming down the track with uncanny verisimilitude. Turning up the heat in the boiler, Lawrence blasts his main squeeze on “Hey Girl (Tired of Your Lying)” in no uncertain terms over an intense headlong boogie beat that threatens to careen off the rails. Continuing the theme, Lawrence ends his show with the traditional “Death’s Black Train” clacking along over Hrinkiw’s martial drum beat as Allen harmonizes with him on the chorus of ‘Oh, the little black train is coming, get your business right, you better get your house in order, cause the train be here tonight.”
Marshall Lawrence accurately calls his music “Neo-Delta Blues & Roots.” As an inoculation against the ills of the modern world, House Call delivers a shot of blues power directly to the soul. ~Dave Rubin, KBA recipient in Journalism

Phil Baker (string bass) (all except 1,4,11,12,13)
Jon Wei (electric bass) (4)
Kendra Ward (drums) (12)
Jeannine Edelblut (percussion) (4)

Notes: Sheila Wilcoxson's strong, dirty, and downtrodden "I've been to hell and back" vocals are the centerpiece of Back Porch Blues' setup of vocals, harmonica, guitar and bass. Whit Draper's guitar captivates throughout on up-tempo jams like "Boogie Woman" and slow, nasty crawlers like "Mean Old Man,". Harmonica player (and bandleader) Jeffrey Dawkins blows like he is hemorrhaging, especially on "NW Line." The baker's dozen tracks are compelling and the sound full and satisfying, even without the presence of a drummer. ~ Andrew Hamilton
