Notes: This disc contains some of the classic recordings in the ragtime blues tradition.
The eight tracks by William Moore, his only issued recordings, have long been favourites with collectors of this genre. Moore (1894 - 1948) was a barber in Tappahannock, Virginia, and performed ragtime songs and gentle blues to his own beautiful guitar accompaniments. Tarter and Gay provide two sophisticated ragtime duets from 1930, while Chicken Wilson & Skeeter Hinton offer more rural entertainment with some lively ragtime numbers for guitar, harmonica & washboard from 1928. Bayless Rose performs three ragtime - influenced blues in the East Coast tradition & one classic rag, "Jamestown Exhibition".
The final performers are better known. The great Blind Blake is represented with a typically virtuoso rendition of "Dry Bone Shuffle", with appropriate percussion. The final three tracks are the only issued recordings by the legendary South Carolina guitar genius Willie Walker. His breathtaking guitar playing, which Josh White likened to Art Tatum's piano style, still impresses today.
This is a wonderful compilation, and showns clearly how ragtime influenced the East Coast guitar blues tradition. Anyone who buys this is guaranteed hours of enjoyment. ~ B.D. Tutt

Biography

Born in Laurens, South Carolina, Davis became blind at a young age. He took to the guitar and assumed a unique multi-voice style produced solely with his thumb and index finger, playing not only ragtime and blues tunes, but also traditional and original tunes in four-part harmony.
Bull City Blues, Durham, North Carolina

In the mid-1920s, Davis migrated to Durham, North Carolina, a major center for black culture at the time. There he collaborated with a number of other artists in the Piedmont blues scene including Blind Boy Fuller and Bull City Red.[1] In 1935, J. B. Long, a store manager with a reputation for supporting local artists, introduced Davis, Fuller and Red to the American Record Company. The subsequent recording sessions marked the real beginning of Davis' career. During his time in Durham, Davis converted to Christianity; he would later become ordained as a Baptist minister.[1] Following his conversion and especially his ordination, Davis began to express a preference for inspirational gospel music.

In the 1940s, the blues scene in Durham began to decline and Davis migrated to New York.[1] The folk revival of the 1960s re-invigorated Davis' career, culminating in a performance at the Newport Folk Festival and the recording by Peter, Paul and Mary of "Samson and Delilah", also known as "If I Had My Way", originally a Blind Willie Johnson recording that Davis had popularized.

Notes: A superior ragtime/stride pianist who is not too shy to improvise a bit even on classic rags, Sue Keller has recorded several excellent CDs for her Ragtime Press label. Due to the particularly strong material on the release, this CD is a good place to begin exploring Keller's music. In addition to vintage tunes from the 1920s and a variety of rags (both famous and obscure), Keller also performs six newer rags, including her "Cranberry Stomp" and two pieces from Tex Wyndham. A well-rounded set highlighted by such numbers as "The Chevy Chase," "Alligator Crawl," "Castle House Rag," and "New Orleans World's Fair Rag."
Ol' Muddy has always been Sue's most popular Ragtime CD. Probably because it includes some of best known ragtime tunes performed with an excitement and style that makes them fresh again.

Notes: Little is known about the life of itinerant delta bluesman Harlem Slim. What we do know, though, is that he was born in the New York area in the early 1950's, and that he began playing 1930s delta blues and ragtime blues at a very early age.
He plays in the styles of Robert Johnson, Johnny Shines, Blind Willie McTell (William Samuel McTell), Blind Boy Fuller (Fulton Allen) and Blind Blake (Arthur Phelps). He is known to have associated with Louisiana Red (Iverson Minter), Memphis Slim (John Len "Peter" Chatman), Billy Gibbons, Bob Brozman, Eric Johnson and Dave Davies. Currently out of retirement after 25 years, his vocals and slide guitar work are stronger than ever.
On this 14-track 42+ minute CD, Harlem Slim plays and sings delta blues and ragtime blues solo, acoustic fingerstyle (both bottleneck slide and fretted) in the traditional style on a variety of original 1920s and 1930s vintage instruments.
