20. M - Belleville Rendez-Vous
The Swing was born in the early 20th century and developed in the 1920s, until the late ’50s. Swing was more of an approach to play in a Jazzy way rather than a style of its own, but it soon surpassed it’s initial origins. Swing music became … Full Descriptionsynonymous with swinging, dancing and moving! It took 50 years to rediscover this musical genre, but thanks to the modern Electronic movement, much of Swing’s original excitement has been reinvented and reinvigorated in the new millennium. The Swing was created to dance, and it’s marriage with Electronica increases its power and energy to seduce a new audience. Electro-swing brings the Swing’s joy and warmth to Electronica’s vitality and energy. 20 tracks. Enjoy!

Her Mystery Not of High Heels and Eye Shadow is a Jonathan Richman relationships album, which means it contains the songwriter's Woody Allen-ish proclivity to look at love's sweaty armpits as well as its quick-beating heart. The 14 songs cover courtship with a lyrical sharpness that keeps you tuned to Richman's stories from beginning to end (even if the occasional Spanish lyrics are a little tough to decipher). Her Mystery begins with a bouncy ode to the girl (who likes to rock) next door, and strays further into the unusual from there. "Springtime in New York" is a conversational walk through Manhattan, where couples are meeting, fighting, breaking up, and "when demolishing a building brings the smell of 1890 to the breeze." "Couples Must Fight" is the parental chat you get after that first big blowup, where Richman admits, "for a better day tomorrow, couples must argue, couples must fight." And on "Give Paris One More Chance," he begs if you "don't think that Paris was made for love, give Paris one more chance." The songs stand on the strength of Richman's off-the-wall observational skills, backed by his chaste, '50s rock & roll rhythms that are poppy enough for the dance floor. Score one each for love's underdogs and bone-dry humor. --Jennifer Maerz

Terry Callier - What Color is Love (1972)
Like the artist himself, the music on this brilliant album defies all categories, embracing Terry Callier's wide range of influences and experiences. Callier's musical kaleidoscope is filled with funk, rock, folk, jazz, and even classical influences. Dancing Girl opens the album with Charles Stepney's majestic orchestration. This opus is the album's pinnacle, moving with soft intensity toward soul-stirring crescendos. Songs like What Color Is Love and Ho Tsing Mee (A Song of the Sun), an elegant antiwar prayer of confusion, somehow avoid clichés or take them to another level. You Goin' to Miss Your Candyman was made popular by Urban Species when they sampled it on Listen in the early '90s, and not surprisingly, it sounds better in its original form. No matter where you turn, Callier's passionate voice captures the sweeping drama of the human condition. This album is a must-have!
Enjoy it!

Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson- It's Your World (1976)
Probably my favorite album from Gil Scott-Heron and his band —in a way, maybe less radical than some of his spoken word/ street poetry records, but the musicianship here is so outstanding that it's a real pleasure to listen every time. Perfect organic sound and groove, fine solos when they are due, and live feeling make up for a real "all killer no filler"! Some of the cuts are re-worked, extended versions of Gil's classics like the magnificent upbeat take on "Home is where the hatred is" sampled to great effect in a house tune by Masters At Work.
Say our friends at Dustygroove: "A standout set from Gil Scott-Heron -- and that's saying a lot, given the strength of his other 70s work! This album's a double-length live set -- one that has Gil taking on the familiar format of the 70s, and using it to really push the boundaries of his own music too! Most tracks are quite long, and filled with spontaneous energy -- a moment in Gil's music to compare to that of Curtis Live for Curtis Mayfield -- proof that soul music could be made even better live than in the studio, as long as the setting was right. The record features a very extended version of "The Bottle" which runs for 13 minutes long, and which is a jammer all the way through -- and other titles include the great jazzy groover "New York City", plus "Trane", "Must Be Something", "Sharing", and "Home Is Where The Hatred Is". One of the few truly fantastic live soul albums!

When we first started thinking about the compilation, we had in mind the idea to put together a great minimal techno selection with stuff from the early 90s, which really inspired us, like Robert Hood, Dan Bell, Plastikman, Pansonic and Mike Ink to name a few. Whilst working on the project we had the feeling that there is so much more great and influential minimal music from way before the techno thing started.
So we were very excited to combine the music from the electronic pioneers, with the tracks from the minimal techno godfathers in a very modern way. In Minimal Music there is so much (space) in between the sounds and the space that gives you a lot of opportunities for an own interpretation.

15. Shame
15 track anthology of darkcore Boston trio, including previously unreleased tracks.Their career cut short by the death of leader Mark Sandman in 1999, Morphine’s was a dark and perhaps unreachable world. Dana Colley’s saxes stood in for the absent guitar, while Sandman’s two-string slide-bass guitar ensured a textural elasticity absent from most of their contemporaries. The Best of Morphine, 1992-1995 chronicles the bands first four albums: Good, Cure For Pain, Yes, and B-sides and Otherwise, and includes two previously unreleased tracks: “Pretty Face”, a dark atmospheric ballad recorded live in one take at Morphine’s studio in Cambridge, MA, and “Jack And Tina”, described by Morphine drummer Billy Conway as “the most beautiful bridge Mark Sandman ever wrote.” The B-side of the long-out-of-print 1000-piece pressing of “Cure For Pain” on 73 vinyl called “Sexy Christmas Baby Mine” (1993) rounds out the adventure through Morphine musical history. The CD is enhanced with a video of the song “Shame”, recorded at the Masquerade in Atlanta.

11. Erik Satie: Vexations, Version 3
12. Georgi Sviridov: Choral Concerto without words in memory of Alexander Yurlov, no. 3 Chorale
Tenor’s music, along with his design and technical innovations, springs from experimental rock. His first recording band Jimi Tenor & His Shamans (1986-1992) was influenced by the early 80s industrial rock, where instruments were made out of scrap metal and plastic. Later during the 90s Tenor moved first towards electronic music, but soon got closer to his roots: 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic soul and African funk.Although Tenor spent all of the 90s in Berlin, New York, London and Barcelona, his artistic approach was typically Finnish: technically practical, but saturated with black humour and a national romantic tone. So he was quite at home all over Europe in front of a crowd gone wild, wearing a glittering self-designed costume and a flowing cape, holding a noise-producing device the main components of which were a walkman made in Hong Kong and an East-German bicycle dynamo, performing a song about ancient Finnish forest gods, sounding like a mixture of Gil Evans, Jimi Hendrix and Fela Kuti. The music industry has found it difficult to operate with Jimi Tenor at times. The hard rock driven Finland of the 80s considered him weird and too marginal. In Britain in the 90s he was seen as a trendy techno jazz artist, but Tenor soon confused the pioneering electro label Warp by delivering an imaginary - and expensive - soundtrack album with a symphony orchestra, instead of making minimalistic hits.Today Jimi Tenor is an established European artist who operates outside the mainstream. His audience consists of clubbers and alternative rock enthusiasts looking for new perspective, but also of jazz and funk rebels. Those who understand that even unconventional pop music can move your body and heart.
