Thomas Dolby (born Thomas Morgan Robertson, on 14 October 1958) is an English musician, producer, and inventor. Thomas was father, Martin Robertson, was an internationally-distinguished professor of classical Greek art and archaeology at the University of London and Oxford University, and in his youth Thomas lived or worked in Greece and France. Thomas married actress Kathleen Beller in 1988; the couple have three children together.
Dolby's interest in music arose through his interest in computers, electronics and synthesizers. He originally attended college to study meteorology, but he was soon side-tracked by electronics, specifically musical equipment. He began building his own synthesizers when he was 18 years old. Around the same time, he began to learn how to play guitar and piano, as well as how to program computers. The "Dolby" nickname comes from the name Dolby Laboratories, and was given to him by school friends due to his seemingly inseparable relationship with his cassette machine. Dolby Laboratories tried to stop him from using the name Dolby entirely. Eventually, the case was settled out of court and it was agreed that he would refrain from using the word Dolby in any context other than with the name Thomas.
In his late teens, Dolby was hired as a touring sound engineer for a variety of post-punk bands, including the Fall, the Passions and the Members; on these dates, he would use a PA system he had built himself. In 1979, he formed the arty post-punk band Camera Club with Bruce Woolley, Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Matthew Seligman. Within a year, he had left the group and joined Lene Lovich's backing band. Dolby gave Lovich his song "New Toy," which became a British hit in 1981. That same year, he released his first solo single, "Urges," on the English independent label Armageddon. By the fall, he had signed with Parlophone and released "Europa and the Pirate Twins." Dolby started playing synthesizer on sessions for other artists in 1982. He wrote and produced "Magic's Wand" for Whodini; the single became one of the first million-selling rap singles. Even with all of these achievements, 1982 was most noteworthy for the release of Dolby's first solo album, The Golden Age of Wireless, in the summer of 1982; the record reached number 13 in England, while it was virtually forgotten in America. "Windpower," the first single from the record, became his first Top 40 UK hit .
Dolby's second album, The Flat Earth holds up considerably well since its 1984 release. This staying power belongs to a fantastic ensemble of supporting players as much as to Dolby's songwriting and crisp production. The album was supported by the single "Hyperactive." The single became his biggest UK hit. Though The Flat Earth did relativly well in the US , Dolby's momentum was already beginning to slow -- none of the singles released from the album cracked the American Top 40. Nevertheless, Dolby was in demand as a collaborator and he worked with Herbie Hancock, Howard Jones, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, and Dusty Springfield. During 1985, he produced Clinton's Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends, Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen (Two Wheels Good in the US), and Joni Mitchell's Dog Eat Dog, as well as supporting David Bowie at Live Aid. Also in 1985, he began composing film scores, starting with Fever Pitch. In 1986, he composed the scores for Gothic and Howard the Duck, to which he credited himself as Dolby's Cube. Aliens Ate My Buick, Dolby's long-delayed third album, appeared in 1988 to poor reviews and weak sales, even though the single "Airhead" became a minor British hit.
For the rest of the late '80s and early '90s, Dolby continued to score films, producing and he began building his own computer equipment. His fourth album, Astronauts & Heretics, was released in 1992 on his new label, Giant the album was a flop. The following year, Dolby founded the computer software company Headspace, which released The Virtual String Quartet as its first program. For the rest of the '90s, Headspace occupied most of Dolby's time and energy. In 1994, he released The Gate to the Mind's Eye, a soundtrack to the videotape Mind's Eye. Also that year, Capitol released the greatest-hits collection, Retrospectacle.

As anyone who's heard their exuberant first album will tell you, Lemon Jelly are no ordinary chill-out act. Here, the eccentric duo present their second full-length outing, Lost Horizons, and it's every bit as good as their acclaimed debut, Lemonjelly.ky Inhabiting a world of almost limitless playfulness, Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin make the sort of brassy, beautiful downtempo music that leaves the listener desperately trying to suppress a goofy grin. You see, Lost Horizons is that rarest of things: a focused, humorous, and exciting chill-out album that stands up to repeat listening. Often, this kind of tongue-in-cheek chillage can sound dull and contrived (or, worse, sickly and overbearing), but Lost Horizons is anything but tedious. It bristles with shimmering, sunny instrumentation (jaunty acoustic guitars, skippy beats, tinkling pianos, oh-so-English brass band fanfares--even the odd harp), while quirky, oddball samples lurk 'round every turn ("Nice Weather for Ducks," for example, is a country-funk shakedown based on a sample from a nursery rhyme). From the percussive space jazz of "Return to Patagonia" to the seductive, sleepy closer, "Curse of Ka'zar," Lost Horizons doesn't so much glimmer as positively shine. Is it 2002's best downtempo album? Almost certainly.

Originally released overseas in 1995, St. Germain's album Boulevard was one of the first to explore house's more organic roots. Since its release, Boulevard has sold 300,000 copies worldwide, serving as a cornerstone for legions of artists and producers who followed it. Still regarded as a dance music landmark, Boulevard's wonderful package of cool jazz, dance, and chilled-out dub all tied up in a tight pretty bow has only gotten better over time. Arguably one of the first LPs to blur the line between house and jazz, the album proved that the four-on-the-floor beat could appeal to the mind as well as to the body. Boulevard's live instrumentation adds a warm organic touch often lacking on modern dance records. Accomplished musicians like trumpet player Paschal Ohse fit well within Navarre's groove-basking production style.
Included on the 2002 PIAS expanded re-release of Boulevard are two tracks from the 1999 F-Com recording From Detroit to St. Germain including St. Germain's rare early hit "Alabama Blues," an addition which makes this release a definite must-have. Other tracks like "Street Scene" demonstrate the lineage of dance music's meditative polyrhythms from early jazz experimentation. St. Germain knows just the proper formula of breaks and grooves to give the listener an entertaining history lesson of house, jazz, soul and the subtle cosmic connections shared by all three.

A long-awaited full length set -- one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff -- not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well -- a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally -- and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk! The choice of artists here is key to the set -- as players from other Afro-influenced genres really take a new spin on Allen's music -- and are allowed to strongly bring their own sounds to the set. Titles include "Ole (Cairo version)" by Salah Ragab, "Sankofa" by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, "Kilode (rmx)" by Carl Craig, "Awa Na Re (rmx)" by Bonde De Role, "Mark's Disco Dub" by Mark Ernestus, "Reggae Land Dub" by Wareika Hill Sounds, "Samba" by Son Palenque De Colombia and "Fuji Ouija" by Diplo.

With C'est La Vie Martin Solveig is back on the musical scene by bringing to light a 3rd album which is resolutely pop, modern and more electronic than his previous works. You can definitely feel this Solveig's touch which is more and more recognizable as time and tracks go by. This unique sound revolves around funky grooves, club energy and strong vocals. One can also discover new flavours and maybe more maturity in his writings. Martin doesn't repeat a pattern, he moves around what would be his fundamental style, each musical achievement
getting him closer and closer to his final musical goal. Today's electro, projects are booming everywhere but martin delivers a personal, catchy paper far from what has become commonplace.

ROCK'N'ROLL has lost a founding father. Bo Diddley, known as "the originator", died of heart failure on Monday. He was 79.
Diddley, who continued to play shows despite his ailing health, died at his home in Archer, Florida.
"One of the founding fathers of rock'n'roll has left the building he helped construct," his management agency, Talent Consultants International, said in a statement.
Diddley's syncopated, percussive, propulsive rhythm guitar playing, backed by shuffling maracas, was inspired by an African drum beat. That rhythm helped lay rock'n'roll's foundation.
"Boom da boom da boom, boom boom. That was basically an Indian chant," is how Diddley described it in a March 2007 interview with National Public Radio.
Resplendent in black Stetson hat and thick-rimmed glasses, employing distortion and reverb on his array of self-designed guitars — rectangular or with Cadillac-like "fins" — Diddley boasted on self-mythologising songs such as Bo Diddley and Bo Diddley's a Gunslinger, presaging many cocksure rockers and rappers.
The driving beat of songs such as Who Do You Love, Roadrunner and Pretty Thing inspired artists from Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley to the Rolling Stones and the Pretty Things, the Clash, Iggy Pop, ZZ Top, U2 and the White Stripes.
Along with Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Diddley constructed a sound that crossed America's racial divide, appealing to both black and white audiences and musicians. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognised his influence in 1987, and he received a Grammy lifetime achievement award the following year. Exploitation by record companies meant he never received financial rewards commensurate with his influence.
"He was a wonderful, original musician who was an enormous force in music and was a big influence on the Rolling Stones," Mick Jagger said in a statement.
Melbourne DJ Mohair Slim, who will be presenting a tribute to Diddley on his show Blue Juice on 3PBS FM this Sunday morning, said Diddley was a true original.
"Bo Diddley didn't really have a predecessor, he was not part of any continuum or musical tradition," Slim said. "Every '60s R&B band had a Bo Diddley song in their repertoire but nobody adopted his whole approach or sound. The guy was such a maverick that he was destined never to get his due."
Born Ellas Bates in 1928 in McComb, Mississippi, he was given the nickname Bo Diddley as a teenager after moving to Chicago in the 1940s.
Inspired by John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, he started performing on street corners.
While he had just one top 40 hit with Say Man and collected no gold records, his influence is profound.
In 1956 a Harlem newspaper, the Amsterdam News, on first seeing Elvis perform, claimed he had "copied Bo Diddley's style to the letter". Rolling Stone magazine described his beat as "the most plagiarised rhythm of the 20th century".
Diddley toured Australia many times, including on the Legends of Rock'n'Roll Tour in the late 1980s, when he terrified promoter Kevin Jacobsen by staging a mock argument with Jerry Lee Lewis.
On his 1978 tour, he was so impressed by Brisbane guitar maker Chris Kinman that he asked him to build him a new square guitar, which he dubbed "the Mean Machine".
Playing at St Kilda's Prince of Wales Hotel in 2005, he surprised the crowd by straying from his signature sound in a genre-defying set of funk, soul, doo-wop, psychedelic rock, country and even rap, a genre he often derided.
Diddley also competed as a boxer and served as a sheriff in Los Lunas, New Mexico. In recent years, he worked with his local police department to warn teenagers about the dangers of drugs and gang violence.

Release for the critically acclaimed French jazz & drum 'n' bass trumpet player, winner of the 1991 Prix Special, France's coveted jazz award. An odd reissue of sorts, Bending New Corners combines tracks off two of trumpeter Erik Truffaz's previous albums. It is unclear why Blue Note felt the need to repackage these tracks yet again; however, here they are and they are worth a listen. Containing tracks from the sessions that produced The Mask and its European version, The Dream, Bending New Corners is a grooveoriented work that draws heavily on late'60s and early'70s Miles Davis. To these ends, Truffaz is a forwardthinking improviser with a plangent tone and knack for writing funky, modal compositions.

Kad je svet pokušao da bude bolji - Kada je nula bila šestica.
In the annals of rock history, there has never been a year quite like 1968. Political assassinations, counter-cultural uprisings, student demonstrations and racial tensions all played their part in bleeding the colour from the hippie dreams of the previous 12 months. The prospect of revolution filled the air and young people took to the streets in their thousands... Mojo
