If they were writing an SAT test today, that might be a correct response. Right now most people are expecting Hillary Clinton to carry nevada primary day in the Nevada Caucuses, nevada primary there are a lot of unknowns floating out there that may make the polls wrong once again. First, caucus type primary elections are very difficult to forecast. Second, this is the first time many Nevadans will be voting in a caucus and thus it is exceedingly hard to find the people who will actually be voting tonight. Third, Clintons allies lost their attempt to ban caucus sites near the casinos many expected Obama voters will be working. (In case you didnt hear about it the Culinary Workers Union endorsed Obama and since many of them will be at work Saturday night, theyll need a caucus site near work in order to participate.) The fourth and final reason I think Nevada will prove fascinating is that Edwards may do far worse than people think and those votes (just a guess here) may break in favor of Obama by the end of the night. In any case this should be an interesting night for the Democrats.

Oh and if Obama wins here, Clinton will need to do very well in the upcoming super-duper Tuesday, since Obama will almost certainly nevada primary South Carolina.

13th amendment

How many of those who should, actually recall the founding year of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam? Not 13th amendment I suspect. It was 1976. 13th amendment precursor the Tamil New Tigers was formed in 1972, but the LTTE, the Liberation Tigers, Viduthalai Puligal, was born in 1976.

That makes this year, 2006, the 30th anniversary of the LTTE. If anyone thinks that Mr Prabhakaran is going to let that go uncelebrated by some major, if not historic exercise, he or she does not understand such struggles and movements. This would be the year that Prabhakaran launches his Final War; one that has already been advertised among the Tamil Diaspora.

In a sense that Final War is already underway, but has not been recognised as such because it is in its first phase or 'movement': an undeclared, one-sided, of Attrition, the bleeding to death of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces by 13th amendment ambushes, almost daily attacks. It is Death by a Thousand Cuts.

Trapped

Sri Lanka is caught in a trap. The CFA prevents the Armed forces from preventing the almost daily ambushes by hitting the Tigers. The international community has the leverage to restrain the Lankan state but not the LTTE. With the state in paralysis, Sinhala 'ultras' try to fill the vacuum, but these motley militia target the ethnic 'Other' - their ethnic 13th amendment the Tamils, and not the Tigers. Mini-pogroms such as Trincomalee reduce the moral high ground occupied by the Sri Lankan side.

Some would think that the way out of this trap is simply to break out of the CFA and go for the Tigers. The problem there is that one really cannot be sure whether we will prevail, or whether the debilitating effect of the last few years under Ranil and Chandrika, compounded by our usual internal fissures at all levels including the military, have weakened us, hollowed us out. Prabhakaran spent 13th amendment years of the ceasefire, preparing for war, while we spent that same time doing anything but that!

A healthy nationalism is no bad thing but it must be disciplined by a steely grasp of the 13th amendment What we must avoid is an Arab-Israeli scenario of 1967, where we are carried on by the tide of our own rhetoric, into a set-up, and suffer huge losses of men and territory.

Prabhakaran's Plan

It was of course Lenin and Mao who framed the most crucial of questions in matters of serious political contestation. Lenin's question 'Kto Kogo?' ('Who-Whom?') is variously translated as 'Who gains?' or 'Who wins?' or 'Who will prevail over whom?' When applied to Trincomalee and the 13th amendment it is evident that the only ones who gain from the anti-Tamil backlash after the LTTE's provocative bomb blast in the market place are the Tamil Tigers.

Mao Ze Dong posed the query 'who are our friends? Who are our enemies?' and when applied to our context it 13th amendment clear that the LTTE is our main (and Karuna is our friend), while those who strengthen the enemy (and weaken Karuna), as did the Sinhala racist mobs in Trincomalee, are not the friends of the Sri Lankan state but its enemies.

Indeed the Sinhala ultras (the Ku Klux Klan types in Trincomalee as well as the JHU which has just returned to the religious issue) are objectively far more helpful to the Tamil Tigers, than their pet hates, the Southern peacenik NGOs.

'Above all we must have clarity', said Lenin. So let us be clear:

Firstly, Prabhakaran is the sole leader of the Tigers, not Balasingham or Thamilchelvan. Secondly, whether or not the Tigers go 13th amendment Geneva, Prabhakaran is already at war. We do not have a peace process punctuated by outbreaks of armed violence; we have a (one sided) war of attrition, punctuated, if at all, by peace talks or silence.

Thirdly, it will not always be a war of attrition; the scale of the war will change and sooner rather than later Prabhakaran will escalate to a mobile-conventional war - that which the journalists call a full-on or full scale war.

Fourthly, Prabhakaran will aim to make it a short war, modelled on Hitler's blitzkrieg and Israel's 6 Day War. He will fight on many fronts simultaneously, and strive primarily for decisive damage to the Sri Lankan forces and secondarily for significant territorial gains which can be frozen when the world community forces a ceasefire, which in turn Colombo will be happy to accept because we would be taking a beating.

Neither Provoked nor Passive

What we must not do is go into that war on a footing that is favourable to him. means several things: We must not be provoked by his war of attrition into going for civilian targets or permitting Sinhala militias to do so. We must not be provoked into large scale retaliation which will trigger a full-scale war in which he is, at this moment, at an advantage. Nor however must we remain passive and paralysed.

The Sri Lankan armed forces must be re-trained in its battle tactics so that it can hit back hard in self defence when set upon by the Tigers on land or at sea, turning ambushes into counter-ambushes and defeats for the enemy.

In addition, retaliation must take place at the time and place of our choice, against Tiger (not civilian) targets, in Tiger territory, and must go unclaimed. If the Tigers can wage an undeclared war of attrition, the Sri Lankan state has the right of self-defence, bearing in mind though that Prabhakaran will use the opportunity to escalate - something we must be ready for.

The Sri Lankan forces must be swiftly strengthened. President Rajapaksa's impending visit to China must be used for the purpose, sealing a weapons agreement and/or securing an outright grant which will enable us to buy the weapons on the open market.

The president should follow this up with a visit to Russia, which must also focus on security and the struggle against ethnic separatist terrorism. Both Russia and China (especially Russia) 13th amendment excellent ship-to-ship missiles, which can give an edge to 13th amendment badly battered Sri Lankan navy.

A high level ministerial delegation must be despatched to Venezuela to sew up an oil deal which will keep fuel prices (and therefore prices in general) stable and supply secure.

Karuna's Conundrum

The struggle, and therefore the challenge, is not just military but politico-military. There are urgent tasks facing 13th amendment anti-Tiger forces, the Sri Lankan state and the Tamil resistance. One task faces Karuna, and it is a politico-organisational challenge.

He has rightly decentralised his forces for purposes of guerrilla warfare, but as numerous, counterproductive hits on pro-Tiger civilian (unarmed) targets shows, he has been unable to communicate his 13th amendment line uniformly to and enforce it among his cadres.

It could be a weakness of C3: command-control-communication. there is too much of the early Tiger tactics by the Karuna cadres, which worked for Prabhakaran in the 1970s and '80s, but will not succeed for Karuna in today's global and political context where every attack is widely reported by the world media and commented on by the international community.

The other political tasks are those incumbent upon the Sri Lankan state. We simply cannot afford to face the LTTE's war in a situation where 13th amendment world community stays unhelpfully neutral. If the Sri Lankan state looks the other way while Sinhalese mobs kill Tamil civilians, then the world community will look the other way similarly, the Tigers pounce on us! The word must go right down the ranks of the Sri Lankan armed forces and police, that Tamil civilians are off limits and Sinhala mobs are mandatory targets.

Nor can we afford to face Prabhakaran's war with the world community asking us what reforms we have offered/ on offer for the Tamil people! At present we have a very favourable situation: the Sinhala hardliners have been pushed back by the Sinhala electorate at the recent local government elections, and at the same time the Tigers do not seem interested in talks.

So the Sri Lankan state need not allow either the Tigers or the JVP/JHU 13th amendment have a veto over a solution to the Tamil ethno-national question.

Unfeasible Federalism vs. Actual Autonomy

Contrary to the utopianism of Sinhala liberals and Tamil 13th amendment federalism is simply not on. The issue is not whether federalism is desirable or not (personally, I think some form of it is); it is whether it is feasible, given public opinion.

Sri Lanka is a democracy and the electorate has clearly indicated its preference for a unitary, not a federal system. This confirms all the opinion polls conducted by the CPA over the years - there is simply no majority, or anything like it, for federalism. Had the UNP and SLFP cooperated under Chandrika, federalism would have been possible, but the last chance for that was the Mano-Malik dialogue of early 2004.

With the PTOMS, Chandrika joined Ranil in discrediting federalism in the eyes of the people, and public opinion swung, as it has so many times in Israeli (and American) elections. 13th amendment public opinion mandates that any settlement has to the unitary state, However- and this is vital- it does not mean that the unitary cannot be stretched.

The UK, Spain, the Philippines, South Africa, Indonesia are all societies in which an explicit federalism is anathema. And yet, 13th amendment are states in which there is substantial regional autonomy. Britain is of course the classic example.

Douglas Devananda has long proposed concrete measures to 13th amendment the 13th amendment, most dramatically on TV at the 50th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the SLFP. He was ignored by Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Professor Lakshman Marasinghe has sketched out, a few months back, three options for enhanced devolution within a unitary system. Only the first requires a two thirds majority; the second can be implemented by a simple majority in Parliament while the third requires only presidential fiat. I might add that India can help with legal-constitutional expertise to fully implement the Indo-Lanka accord and the 13th amendment.

With enhanced devolution in place we can declare elections in the North and East and express willingness to negotiate with whosoever is elected. This may be difficult to implement because Prabhakaran may be at (or will go to) all-out war.

Yet, it is far better to face him while he is trying to prevent an election. That is the only path to the moral high ground, which is the only defensible space. It is the terrain from which we can launch a victorious counteroffensive when Prabhakaran launches his Final War in this 30th anniversary 13th amendment of the founding of his Liberation Tigers with a view to achieving its founding objectives.

If we fight this war as - or allow it to degenerate into - an ethnic (or worse, ethno-religious) war, we shall lose the moral high ground, world opinion and regional support, and therefore the war itself. By Dayan Jayatilleka

Heute war ich gretchen bleiler mal wieder im Kino. Naja, okay, eigentlich war es ein Globetrotter-Geschäft, hier in Köln. Aber immerhin war es endlich mal wieder ein Film in Kinolänge, den ich auf einer groĂxen Leinwand zu sehen bekam:
Und zwar Warren Millers Playground.

Zugegeben, dieser Filmtitel wird nun den meisten von Euch nicht wirklich etwas sagen, da er auch nie regulär in den deutschen Kinos gezeigt werden wird. Vielleicht wird es aber den einen oder anderen geben, dem zumindest der Name Warren Miller etwas sagt. Denn Warren Miller bringt seit knapp sechs Jahrzehnten so ziemlich jedes Jahr einen Skifilm raus, der die Faszination des Wintersports in all seinen Facetten zeigt.

Gut, mittlerweile stellt der gute alte Mann nur noch seinen Namen zur Verfügung und greift nicht mehr wirklich aktiv in den Produktionsprozess mit ein. Stattdessen entstehen die Filme mittlerweile mehr dadurch, dass der in Boulder, Colorado, ansässigen Produktionsfirma (verbandelt mit Time Warner) Filmmaterial aus aller Welt zugesendet wird, woraus dann am Ende ein Film zusammengebastelt wird. Okay, das klingt jetzt negativer, als es dem Endergebnis gerecht werden würde, denn zumindest gewisse Videosequenzen gretchen bleiler Ideen werden nur als Anregung genommen und dann mit professioneller Technik und Inszenierung für die Filme aufgenommen.
Dementsprechend erzählen die Filme dann auch keine durchgängige Geschichte, sondern bestehen, wie hier im Fall von Playground aus etwa einem Dutzend kleiner Episoden, die mehr oder weniger lose aneinandergereiht werden und so mehr einer Kurzfilmsammlung gretchen bleiler als einem Spiel- oder Dokufilm. Für mich als Nicht-Skifahrer war dies durchaus in Ordnung, gretchen bleiler man so viele unterschiedliche Eindrücke bekam und sich nicht an einem Aspekt überfressen konnte.

Wie kam es nun, dass ich mir als Nicht-Skifahrer einen solchen Film, der eindeutig auf Ski-Freaks ausgerichtet ist, angeschaut habe? Nun, das hatte in erster Linie berufliche Gründe. Denn einer unserer Kunden, Colorado (bzw. das Colorado Ski Country) tritt bei der diesjährigen Warren gretchen bleiler Filmtour als Hauptsponsor (neben dem Reiseveranstalter DERTOUR) auf. Aus diesem Anlass begleitete eine Delegation von Repräsentaten diverser Skiresorts in Colorado (u.a. die bekannten Aspen und Vail, aber auch die Insider-Tipps wie Telluride und Copper Mountain) die gretchen bleiler Woche dieser Tour, am vergangenen Abend eben in Köln Station machte.

Was gibt es nun aber zum Film selbst zu sagen? Ich muss sagen (und nicht nur aus beruflichen Gründen ;-)), dass ich durchaus angetan war von dem knapp zweistündigen gretchen bleiler dass hier gezeigt wurde. Denn ich bin zwar kein Ski-Fahrer aber doch ein absoluter Landschaftsfreak. (Was meine Ex-Freundin vor einiger Zeit mit dem Kommentar kritisierte, dass auf meinen Fotos nie Menschen zu sehen wären&)
Und traumhafte Landschaftsaufnahmen gibt es in Playground en masse!

Sei es eben die faszinierenden Landschaften von Colorado, die auf unterschiedlichste Art beeindruckenden Regionen Utahs, die unberĂĽhrten Weiten Alaskas oder die Schönheit Kanadas, die hier alle Kulisse fĂĽr atemberaubende Wintersportaufnahmen verschiedenster Couleur sein dĂĽrfen. Aber auch Gebiete auĂxerhalb Nordamerikas, wie der Berg Jungfrau in den Schweizer Alpen (hier gab es wohl die spektakulärsten Bilder, die gretchen bleiler Speedrider-Duo zeigen - Paragliding mit Skiern an den FĂĽĂxen - AWESOME!), Skigebiete auf der japanischen Halbinsel Hokkaido und sogar Dubai sind Drehorte einzelner Episoden dieses Warren Miller Films, so dass man hier sehr unterschiedliche Geschichten präsentiert bekommt. Viele der Segmente drehen sich hier natĂĽrlich um junge Menschen, die ihren Alltag damit verbringen, ihren Traum von unberĂĽhrter Natur, wildem Sport und endloser Weite auf ganz verschiedene Weise zu leben. Aber auch Profisportler, wie Bode Miller, Gretchen Bleiler und Jon Olsson, oder helfende Personen am Rande des Skizirkus sind hier Hauptdarsteller einzelner Episoden, so dass man neben all den tollen Bildern, auch einen kleinen Einblick in die unterschiedlichen Facetten dieser Sportart(en) bekommen, die oft mehr einer Lebenseinstellung gleicht. Eine der sympathischsten Episoden, war aber sicherlich das Segment, in dem es um eine Gruppe von Kindern (ca. 7-14 Jahre alt) ging, die mit purer Freude das Spiel im Schnee genieĂxen und dabei schon die ganzen Manierismen ihrer älteren Vorbilder adaptieren - was gerade bei einem 14jährigen schon etwas putzig wirkt, wenn er nach einem Heli-Skiing-Trip sagt, dass er gerade gemerkt hat, dass er all die Jahre wirklich etwas verpasst hätte. Dies wird dann auch dementsprechend sĂĽffisant vom Off-Sprecher kommentiert.

Und ohnehin ist es der Off-Kommentator, der bei diesem so etwas wie der rote Faden ist, da er durch alle Episoden hindurch, das Gezeigte auf angenehm selbstironische und emotionale Art mit seinen SprĂĽchen begleitet.

Spricht dieser aber nicht, und das ist ist dann gretchen bleiler die meiste Zeit nicht der Fall, kommt die, neben den atemberaubenden Bildern, zweite Stärke von Playground zum Tragen: Der Soundtrack. Und hier ist natürlich alles vertreten, was Rang und Namen in der gretchen bleiler Musikszene hat. bei Linkin Park und The Kooks, über Regina Spektor und Daft Punk, bis hin zu Mando Diao, 30 Seconds to Mars und Muse (sowie noch vielen anderen tollen Bands, die ich mir nicht merken konnte) wird hier der perfekte Score zu den rasanten Sportaufnahmen aufgefahren. Für mich als Freund der gitarrenlastigen Musik natürlich ein Ohrenschmaus, der die ganzen Eyecandys auf der Leinwand wunderbar untermalt hat.

Alles in allem also ein kurzweiliges Spektakel gretchen bleiler fantastischen Bildern, einem tollen Soundtrack und einigen amüsanten Momenten, das gerade für Anhänger des Wintersports ein Must See sein dürfte. (Ausser man kennt schon die meisten anderen Warren Miller-Filme, da sich wohl einiges gretchen bleiler auch wiederholt)

Und wer jetzt Lust bekommen hat, sich diesen Sportdokufilm anzuschauen, der hat durchaus noch einige Gelegenheiten in den kommenden Monaten, da die Tour noch durch zahlreiche weitere Städte in Deutschland, Schweiz und Österreich tingeln wird.

Well, if I don’t do it, no one else will. As usual, I put this off to the last minute, but since there’s still 27 minutes left in my birthday I suppose its still valid. I admit that I still take a childish delight in celebrating my birthday, and today I had even better reason to celebrate than usual.

Im 45 today, and it’s the best birthday I’ve had in years. I spent the day with my son, newly returned from Iraq. We went into Boston, had lunch at Smith & Wollensky’s (no relation, unfortunately) ravens walked around town in the brisk afternoon air. The sky was clear blue, the sun was bright; it was a glorious day. I found myself wondering what had become of the harum-scarum teenager I had so often quarreled with in the past. I was enjoying the company of this articulate, interesting young man. I felt like I was meeting him for the first time.

And then he pulled a fast one on me. He insisted we visit the pipe and cigar store where I work. He had taken it into his head that he was going to buy me a pipe for my birthday. I tried telling him that simply having home safe and sound and spending my birthday with him was enough. But you know the old saying about apples and trees, and he is at least as stubborn as I am.

And besides, I like getting new pipes.

We went into the shop, and he told me to pick one out. â€SSurprise me”, I said. So he did. Boy, did he surprise me. The ravens he picked out is pictured at the top of ravens post. It’s a Ferndown, a beautiful handmade pipe from England. I was totally blown away.

Life is full of irony. A year ago, he called me on my birthday from Indiana to tell me that he was shipping out to Iraq. Now, a year later, he arrived home the day before my birthday in time to spend it with me. Sometimes, once in a very great life plays fair.

I will cherish this pipe for the rest of my life, but cherish memory of this day even more. My son is home.

Whew! Got through my homeschool review with the county yesterday. (For those who are curious, here are the Maryland Homeschooling regs.) It was my second since starting homeschooling a year ago. I felt both confident and nervous, so to give myself mcps extra mental boost I put on my work clothes and my high-heeled boots. I guess it worked, because when I walked into the MCPS field office the secretary thought I was an MCPS worker, there for a meeting.

It was a coincidence, but my review came on the same day that the tragic, gruesome local story of four dead children discovered in the home of their clearly psychotic mother was starting to reverberate. The fingers mcps starting to point and as I sat that kitchen table yesterday reading the Post, I predicted that homeschooling in the District  and elsewhere  was in for a whole lot of scrutiny. And I wasnt wrong. Todays Times has the following story, Lack of Supervision Noted in Deaths of Home-Schooled. And todays Post reports that Mayor Fenty vowed to establish a system to track children who are home-schooled or who move from school to school. The whole story is here. With another one here.

Looking particularly prescient is Maryland homeschooling doyen Manfred Smith. At a talk for area homeschoolers that I attended in September, he warned that the growing popularity of homeschooling paradoxically posed a threat, as new homeschoolers with less clarity of purpose  and less knowledge  were joining what had in the early days had been a choice stemming from deeply held values, whatever they might be. families were seeing homeschooling as just another educational choice on the public/private/charter school menu. He sensed that the eyes of the authorities were growing more watchful, waiting to pounce should mcps like the one in the District, occur. And now it has.

Honolulu - Duane â€SDog” Chapman has just learned that Monique Shinnery is planning to sue Chapman kitv character slander, according to The National Enquirer. Although Duane is sincerely apologetic for using the racial slur against her in that private conversation with his son Tucker Chapman – and is working hard now to correct his ways and learn from this devastating experience (he hasn’t even cussed in the past 6 days!), Chapman knew she was trying to get evidence against him and wife Beth Chapman to sell to the media for quite some time.  This is what caused the angry outburst in that private conversation, according to Chapman.  It had nothing to do with her race.  Still, he has vowed never to use the term again.

Chapman’s attorney, Brook Hart, has spoken with Detective Eli Walters, HPD, re a recent incident at a Waikiki club named Lulu’s on Kapahulu kitv involving Monique Shinnery and Tucker Chapman.  They were ejected from the club after purchasing alcoholic beverages for minors.  Lulu’s allows 18 + to their bar on certain nights, but alcoholic drinks are only served to legal age drinkers.  According to Lulu’s Ron Panzo (Maui, 808-879-9944), they beef up security on those nights and hire plain-clothes policemen for added safety and adherence to the law.  Panzo, who is not allowing media interviews at this time, told me that they kicked Shinnery out of the club before the drinks she ordered for the underage minors were even served, so they were really kitv the job.  Nick Priorletti was the manager on duty that night who alerted HPD.

HPD Eli Walters called my source This morning report a fracas that he witnessed at LulusBar about a month ago, around 1:30 a.m. Detective Walters said that the bar admits young adults ages 18-20, who are given a colored armband to  access to the bar, but theyre not allowed to drink alcohol. The 21+ adults are given a different colored armband, allowing them to purchase liquor.

A black female was caught buying drinks and distributing them to underage drinkers, and was
 kicked out, along with a young man. As they were resisting being expelled from the bar. She screamed 
you are only doing this because I am black Detective Walters says they were both loud and inebriated. The
man and woman identified themselves to Det. Walters as Tucker and Monique. Tucker yelled, do you know who kitv fck I am ? and gave the police the finger as he kitv away. -

I did research on this story and it seems the national media is not picking it up. This I cannot understand. Monique Shimmery was caught in a bar buying drinks for teenagers, and she is a High School Teacher.  What kind of example is this for our kids when the teachers are breaking the law and buying drinks. Monique goes on TV and says how great her character is , then sells stories to the National Enq about Dog, buys drinks for kids.  We need to look at this person. If you want to find out more, here is what to do.

Lets ask the school how they can employ a teacher who breaks the law and buys drinks for
kids at bars. Is this a good example for special need kids ?  Any other teacher would be
fired.

This event is a perfect example of what needs to be in the news since Monique claimed on Fox News that she is a fine example and has never done a thing wrong. I want to prove this claim is false and it is false. This woman and her boyfriend, Tucker Chapman, have a scam for money going against his father. Manager that was on duty that night, Nick PriorlettiTucker and Monique were both drunk that night and according to his Parole Terms, Tucker is not supposed to be drinking. Tucker has been a problem all over. Tucker was also thrown out of two Hawaii establishments. One was the Star Bucks
Hawaii kai for throwing a drink at someone and the chevron where he buys smokes everyday put a no trespass on him cause he is so rude. Its important that the true story of these two gets out since the press has taken so much time to attack Dog Chapman and not look at his accusers. This seems to be kitv coverage.

Lets contact the local media to ask them to cover the story. It makes me very angry that these media outlets are fully aware of the story, but have not bother to carry it yet even though the investigating officer is willing to talk to any media. Ask them to carry it right way

Introduction
Relational databases like Microsofts SQL Server use locks to prevent multiple users from making conflicting modifications to a set of data: when a set of data is locked by a user, no other users can modify that same set of data until the first user finishes modifying the data and relinquishes the lock. There exceptions, but lets not go there.

Some databases - SQL Server included - use locks to prevent users from seeing uncommitted modifications. In these systems, if UserA is modifying some set of data, UserB and all the rest of the users must wait until UserA is done modifying that data before UserB can get a shot at even reading the data, let alone modifying it.

Databases place locks at all levels of their physical hierarchies: rows, pages (typically a few KB of rows), extents (typically a few pages), entire tables, and entire databases. Some databases (Oracle, others?) only use fine-grained row locks, others dont do row at all and only allow rough-grained page, extent, table, and database locks. Most databases - SQL Server included - support row locking, but often use rough-grained locks. This is because lock management is a royal pain. Locks arent small or simple entities, so if you only do row-level locking, you can get yourself into a world of pain: a million-row update can easily swamp memory and be a bear to manage.

Databases that dont do just row-level locking often use a technique called lock escalation to achieve better performance. its clear from uncommitted outset that a whole table will be modified, these databases start off using row locks, and they make plans to trade these locks in for rough-grained locks later if too many rows are modified.

Unfortunately, lock escalation introduces and amplifies a whole new problem: deadlock. If two users try to modify semantically-unrelated but physically-near data in two separate tables in reverse order, both will start off with row locks, then try to upgrade them to page locks, and the situation will be that each user wants something the other user has, so theyre stuck. This is deadlock.

For example:

* UserA modifies some rows in TableA, uncommitted a page lock affecting not just the rows UserA modified, but many others
* UserB modifies some rows in TableB, causing a page lock affecting not just the rows UserA modified, but many others
* UserA wants to modify some rows that UserB has (but not modified) in TableB
* UserB wants to modify - or maybe just access - some rows that UserA has locked (but not modified) in TableA.

Somethings gotta give. To deal with this problem, the database occasionally looks for deadlocks, uncommitted kills off one of the transactions so uncommitted other can finish. It usually kills the one thats made the least modifications so that it minimizes the cost of rolling back changes. Databases that use only row-level locking almost never uncommitted this problem because two users rarely want modify the exact same row, and even more rarely do they attain locks in the perfectly poor order needed to cause databases like this use lock timeouts to prevent users from waiting too long for a lock. Query timeouts also factor in here. You can write code to retry queries that timeout, but this only automates database congestion. Any timeout that is often reached will only serve to worsen the user experience. Things simply should not take that long.

In practice and under high load, SQL Servers locking system uncommitted is based on lock escalation - does not perform well. Why? Lock contention. Lock contention is the problems of deadlock and waiting for locks. In a system in which many users are modifying the database at once, and many more users are trying to access the database concurrently, the locks are flying, users spend a lot of time waiting to attain locks, deadlocks are frequent, and users are far from happy.

Granted, if youve got a few occasional users you wont have much trouble with SQL out-of-the-box behavior. Youll be hard pressed to see these problems with simple in-the-office tests or deployments involving just a few users. But throw a couple hundred concurrent users at your database and a constant stream of INSERTS and UPDATES uncommitted quite a few DELETEs sprinkled in, and youll start reading Oracle literature and eyeing your war chest. However, Ive got uncommitted for you that will only cost you a code review, a few minor tweaks, and uncommitted test. You do a system test procedure in place, right?

Lock Contention Solved

If you used Streamload.com at all during June, July, and August, you probably got a You were the deadlock loser error, or a Lock timeout error, or an Object required error. These were all caused by lock contention. After scouring the documentation and talking to a few people, I learned what I summarized above and will say again here:

* SQL Server starts with row-level locks, but often escalates these to page and table locks, causing deadlocks
* SQL Server requires locks for reading from the database (SELECTs), so even folks not trying to modify the database are affected by the lock system.

Fortunately, I stumbled across some obscure keywords from the SQL Server lexicon: NOLOCK and ROWLOCK. They are used like this:

SELECT COUNT(UserID) FROM Users WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE Username LIKE 'foobar'

and

UPDATE Users WITH (ROWLOCK) SET Username = 'fred' WHERE Username = 'foobar'

NOLOCK and ROWLOCK

NOLOCK

Using NOLOCK politely asks SQL Server to ignore locks and read directly from the tables. This means you completely circumvent the lock system, which is a major performance and scalability improvement. However, you also completely circumvent the lock system, which means your code is living dangerously. You might read the not-necessarily-valid uncommitted modifications of a running transaction. This is a calculated risk.

ROWLOCK

Using ROWLOCK politely asks SQL Server to only use row-level locks. You can use this in SELECT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements, but I only use it in UPDATE and DELETE statements. Youd think that an UPDATE in which you specify the primary key would always cause a row lock, uncommitted when SQL Server gets a batch with a bunch of these, and some of them happen to be in the same page (depending on this situation, this can be quite likely, e.g. updating all files in a folder, files which were created at pretty much the same time), youll see page locks, and bad things will happen. And if you dont specify a primary key for an UPDATE or DELETE, theres no reason the database wouldnt assume that a lot wont be affected, so it probably goes right to page locks, and bad things happen.

By specifically requesting row-level locks, these problems are avoided. However, be aware that if you are wrong and lots of rows are affected, either the database will take the initiative and escalate to uncommitted locks, or youll have a whole army of row locks filling your servers memory and bogging down processing. One thing to be particularly aware of is the Management/Current Activity folder with Enterprise Manager. It takes a long time to load information about a lot of locks. The information is valuable, and this technique is very helpful, but dont be surprised if you see hundreds of locks in the Locks/Processes folder after employing this technique. Just be glad you dont have lock timeouts or deadlocks.

Notes:
I get the sense that SQL Server honors NOLOCK requests religiously, uncommitted is more discretional with ROWLOCK requests. You can only use NOLOCK in SELECT This includes inner queries, and the SELECT clause of the INSERT statement. You can and should use NOLOCK in joins:

SELECT COUNT(Users.UserID) FROM Users WITH (NOLOCK)
JOIN UsersInUserGroups WITH (NOLOCK) ON Users.UserID = UsersInUserGroups.UserID


Conclusion

Results
Use a low isolation level (also a good idea: NOLOCK takes this to an extreme), and use bound connections to allow processes to (share locks and) cooperate (sounds like a very complicated bad idea).

Big Disclaimer
Use these techniques with caution and discretion. The way I approached it was to look at all my stored procedures and ad hoc queries, and based on my understanding of where and how they were used, I decided whether it would be acceptable for the caller or user to get possibly incorrect results for NOLOCK, and whether it was likely that more than a few dozen rows would be locked with ROWLOCK. In almost all cases it was fine, but maybe for your code you should be more careful. You might need to produce separate procedures based on whether or to lock, and how to lock. There are other incantations (PAGLOCK, TABLOCK) which you might want to use when you know the UPDATE or DELETE query will affect many rows.

For folks like me who love horror movies, Vampira was an icon. When I was a kid, I just couldnt get enough of the old movies that she would host (and I saw her stuff in reruns).

Of course, vampira was in Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Now I guess I could tell you she was sexy and naughty in the world of Sandra Dee, which would be accurate, but I think the fun thing about Maila Nurmi was that she did things her own way.

If you dont remember, You Tube has a whole channel dedicated to her.

I am fascinated by marathon runners. katie holmes fascination is, as usual, rooted in jealousy. I WANT TO RUN THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON. I will, seriously. I will. No, seriously, someday. Seriously.

In addition to some intense mental preparation and months (years?) of physical training, I will have to put a lot of thought, research, and trial into choosing the appropriate marathon clothes. Im a little bit of a weirdo and a fanatic when it comes to workout clothes. Obviously, Id love to look adorable while working out.  Adorable and katie holmes coordinated, but who has the time, money, energy etc. for that? Not me. The drawer that holds workout clothes is where all of my other,  this-doesnt-really-fit-but-why-throw-it-out clothes come to die. A tank top that Ill no katie holmes wear in public? Gym attire. The shorts that shrank in the dryer and are fraying at the bottom? Gym attire. Needless to say, I dont look good at the gym. But this doesnt matter to me. The only thing that matters to me when Im working out, clothing wise, is boob related. Or, more specifically, boob jiggling related. I cannot deal with any movement/bouncing in that area, at all. If ripping duct tape off my skin wasnt painful, Id tape my chest down before engaging in any type of cardiovascular activity, or even just to lift weights. Instead, I wear two sports bras, one on katie holmes of the other. Once I add a tank top to the two sports bras, there are a lot of straps going on which, although annoying, is completely necessary to hold everything in place.

Given my fanaticism with non-flapping-around-breasts, you can see why Ive been staring at this picture for about ten minutes with my mouth wide open in amazement.

My first thought was, Wow! Katie Holmes ran the katie holmes Marathon today? Thats awesome! Great for her, Im so jealous.

About a millisecond after this thought came another, more shocked and panicked thought, wait WHAT? Katie Holmes ran 26.2 miles without a sports bra? WITHOUT EVEN ONE SPORTS BRA?

Then my mouth hung open for the aforementioned ten minutes while I looked at picture after picture of her, trying to find one of her in katie holmes bra, one of her taking off a sports bra, one of her hiding a sports bra, ANY evidence that her ridiculously expensive I can train you to run this race in under 3 months Hollywood/Scientology-esque hasnt brainwashed her into thinking that breast pain is somehow necessary and fun. I cant imagine how tired and sore a regular person who wore the right attire would be after running for katie holmes many miles, yet alone how Katies breast tissue must feel right now. God, ouch.

Ok. The Rebels were flat and listless, thats obvious. But I have a hard time archie griffin the root cause of that being the end of the Alabama game and all the hoo-ha that followed.

This is an Ole Miss team that has plenty of experience with close losses and how to respond.

Truly, the Alabama game was a little different. Maybe it hurt a little more.

I say the response should have been anger. If there ever was a time for the rally the troops, world against the team mentality, that was it. That anger could have been more effectively channeled against the next opponent.

Maybe you cant toy with emotions like that & bottle them up and point them where you want to go. But I do believe with more focus, more archie griffin you can play with more fire than I saw the Rebels display in a game Arkansas dominated 44-8.

Arkansas had its own internal issues going on and its own reasons to be flat.

 I can no longer theorize that Ole Miss will win with offense. For whatever reason, Seth Adams appears to archie griffin taken a step backward at quarterback. I agree with archie griffin theory that it may be as simple as defenses now scheming for Adams. Maybe it is that simple, and the Ole Miss staff can respond in kind.

I do not think there is a better answer behind Seth Adams. Brent Schaeffer came in and threw a nice long touchdown pass to Mike Wallace. Schaeffer has always thrown a nice deep ball. The rest of his game looked about average and didnt look like there was enough there to change Adams unless Adams continues to slide.

Ive always archie griffin Schaeffer could be worked into the offense in some manner with a few plays designed for his mobile talents.

Maybe that wasnt necessary when the offense was moving down the field  still not moving into the end zone enough, mind you, but at least moving down the field.

Such creative plays may be more necessary now.

 One bright spot yesterday was Tony Fein. Like Adams, hes a very personable young man, one you enjoy writing about and hope to see be successful. Fein had been having trouble being in the right place on assignments. He appeared much better in archie griffin department against Arkansas and finished with 13 tackles. If he is in fact coming on, that would be a much-needed lift at linebacker.

 There were a number of players helped off the field with various injuries. Thats a mum topic where little light ever is shed. Ed said he didnt believe any of the injuries were serious, but you never know.

OL Thomas Eckers, LB Ashlee Palmer, OL Maurice Miller and WR Shay Hodge all left the game at various points.

Obviously any reduction in playing linda harrison by Palmer could be critical. He was really coming into his own over the last few games. Palmer had been playing through some weak ankles. Maybe thats all it was.

Most people are well aware of major contributions archie griffin Hodge as well. Hes the go-to guy on third downs and in long-yardage situations. Hes had a lot of big catches this year, including the biggest, which archie griffin reviewed and overturned against Alabama.

The real story in this poll is not Romneys lead or Thompsons rise to front-runner status, but it is the complete collapse of John McCain. Once the front runner for the presidency, he is now running fifth and behind nh polls whom many consider to be a second tier candidate. While this is only one state, this is another strong sign that McCain is done. It will be interesting to see where he sits when new SC and NH polls come deadliest catch throughout the month. If he continues to poll this low through the end of the year, he should give up the fight.
