I took this from the 94th floor observatory of the John Hancock blg. in Chicago. It was a hot summer day and the beach was crowded. Everyone was out having fun in the sun! Gaping-mouthed ray This ray was in an aquarium near the sharks that we watched through a glass floor. Most of the rays had buried themselves to some degree or another in the sand. This one all of a sudden opened it's mouth and just gaped there for a minute. Sarah pressing a tile into the thin set Sarah had to put her full weight on a tile to set it in the thin set. I didn't have that much trouble since I'm more, say, substantial. We'll never use this pre-mixed thin set again - thin set mortar is a much better choice. Tiles are set upstairs Here is the finished tile set. We had to let it dry 24 hours before we could lay the grout. It's better to let it dry as long as possible when using pre-mixed thin set. In many places, the pop rivets supposedly holding the fibreglass windscreen surround to the framework behind were not attached to anything, the framework was so deformed. The pillars were rotten, the offside was in two pieces, rotted through at cab celing height and the piece below the cab floor was attached to the panels and nothing else! There used to be an island in the middle of the kitchen...it's outline can be seen on the floor and there's a cutout on the floor for a water line that would have gone up to it. Or electrical or whatever. Original wainscotting type thing with chairrail...good condition. kitchen floor 07 ceramic/porcelain tile needs a VERY solid base, hence this concrete board subfloor, which went down on top of the new plywood. Dark Floors press conference Just your average Lordi press conference. This time before the world premiere of the Lordi motion picture - Dark Floors. So, for all you people who don't know, Lordi is a Finnish heavy metal band which is heavily influenced by horror movies and pop-cult monsters. In 2006 they brought Finland the country's first ever victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. They became national heroes, even if many had big doubts before the competition. The victory brought them unexpected fame, which made it possible for them to realise a few dreams, like making a full-length horror movie with a big budget. The front man and the driving force in the band is Mr Lordi, the red-eyed guy in the middle. *gulp* i debated for a long time about posting this shot. why did i decide to take the risk? because i look at this, and i like what i see. if only you could comprehend the profundity of the significance of that statement. how new a concept it is for me, how rare an utterance. there are many, many women photographers on flickr who post tasteful nudes, who use the camera to explore their bodies, who have no shame when it comes to presenting themselves as the women they are. and they have always, always intimidated the bejesus out of me. but over the last several months, i've found myself feeling less shameful, and more curious. aren't i a woman? aren't i allowed to see myself this way too? i've had this nightgown for years and years, and i've always loved how simple it makes me look, how feminine it makes me feel. when i picked up the camera the other night, i decided to see if i could capture that -- and when i saw the results, i thought, um, yeah. that's me. who knew. i am not posting this to be salacious. i am not posting this to be racy. i am posting this because i need to remind myself, sometimes, that i can do this, too. that this is who i am. impending ? impact Through last night I slept so little Busy thoughts of an attempt to elude regret. (photo 5) For our first project in my FINA 2135 course titled "Design in Contemporary Art" we had to shoot "...15 photographs of the world around (us), looking for distinct, clear design and composition elements to be used as a source to create abstract compositions using Adobe Illustrator." The aim of the project was to "...sensitize the eye to the world as a source of inspiration for design." In taking the photographs, we had to consider a number of elements including "...shape, the use of negative space to create shape, repeating patterns, clear colour forms, arrangement and the use of unusual angles, closeups or exaggerated perspectives." Nina and Alek Rebein Nina & Aleksander Rebein came to Zaokskii, Tula's Region, Russia from Middle Asia to help build the seminary and publishing house. Alek's specialty was installing hardwood floors. He became the production manager for Source of Life Publishing House until he retired a couple of years ago but was recently called out of retirement to be acting director. He is now acting production manager. Part of this included a new facade in the prevailing interwar style of the time – Art Deco and the addition of several more floors to what was already a very large department store. On the sixth floor a chic European style ballroom with soaring ceilings, sweeping stairs and parquet flooring was planned for use by the emporium’s patrons as a dining room by day and in which Myer could host Parisian fashion shows and hold exclusive Melbourne society events by night. The Myer Mural Hall, so called because of an impressive collection of ten murals by Australian artist Napier Waller, was the realisation of Sidney Myer’s dream. The Mural Hall, a dining hall suitable for a sitting for one thousand people and a venue for fashion parades and performances, was completed in 1933 as part of the sixth floor which was set aside for dining. It is a large rectangular space with a decorative plaster ceiling and balconies and wall panels in a Streamline Moderne style. However, it is the decoration of ten murals by renowned artist Napier Waller (1893-1972) that are the Mural Hall’s claim to fame. The murals took a little over a year to complete and were painted at Napier Waller’s home at Fairy Hills in Ivanhoe before being transported to the department store where they were hung. Completed in 1934, just after Sidney Myer’s death, eight of the murals are almost floor to ceiling, whilst the remaining two are located over the two side entrances. All pay homage to the seasons and to women and their achievements through history in the areas of art, opera, literature, dance, sport and fashion. The eastern wall features a mural "Personalities of Opera". It features: Spanish opera singer Adelaina Patti (1843 – 1919) as Aida; Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820 – 1887) as Somnambula; Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba (1861 – 1931) as Marguerite; American opera singer Geraldine Farrar (1882 – 1967) as Thasi; French opera singer Maria Felicita Malibran (1808 – 1836) as Semiramide; Australian opera singer Lillian Crisp (18?? – 19??) characterizing Fritz Hart’s (1879 – 1949) Deidre (Sidney Myer was involved in Fritz Hart’s success as a conductor in Australia); German composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883); and Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1814 – 1901). Workers' housing Starting in 1918, long before Modernism or the International Style were thought of, the Crittall Manufacturing Co. constructed a small estate of houses for its workers. They were of concrete block, with flat roofs and exposed lintels. Sand for the concrete was excavated on site. I inspected the interior of one of them. The stairs were of concrete (some, I was informed, are of steel), and so was the floor of the upstairs rooms. Downstairs, on the ceiling, could be traced the impression of the wood grain, bitten into the concrete when it was laid down wet on planks. The rooflines, as built, were raised at the corners and at the centre of each semi-detached pair. All, of course, had Crittall metal-framed windows. Today, not one house has its raised roofline and, except for a couple of listed examples, there is not a Crittall window to be seen. laying larva Buck Moth laying eggs on an oak branch. I have never seen this type of moth and certainly never seen one laying eggs !! shoe rack the floors are polished concrete... it's not an ideal surface because it's hard and irregularly patterned. our suspicion is that the complex, which originally opened as condos, left the floors unfinished so the buyer could put in whatever carpet or finish he wanted. but when it changed to rentals, they didn't want to invest in finishing the floors, so they did this as a quick and low-cost solution. floors - 2 The floors downstairs look like this, and have since we moved in. Yes, I actually mopped. It looks exactly the same. Should I paint or strip all the paint and ugly gunk? I love polished concrete...but thats a whole lot of floor to strip. It will cost a pretty penny in supplies too. Any suggestions? Bunker The wood floors have been replaced in the bunker. There's a niche for a fireplace on the side wall. The windows are angled so a rifle or cannon can be shot out with decent range and scope. There are entry ways to the neighboring rooms on either side near the far wall. Christopherson Wood Floors, doing the work In September 2010 the stage floor of the 1928 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam, WA was refinished. The front portion, maple, was refinished. The backstage portion, fir, was replaced with maple. The original fir in the wings is still in place.
