Camera Bag

A combination of my schools Canon system and my Nikon system. The Canon System: Canon XSi, Canon 70-200EF-IS, Canon 430EX strobe, 18-55 ef-s IS. The Nikon System: Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55 Af-s, Nikkor 55-200 af-s NON-vr.

I'm shooting the school's Indoor Percussion group at state finals this weekend. Ought to be crazy as hell.

Canon T2i with external display & mic

The second I got my new camera, I took a photo and a video clip and played with all the ports. Since the thing puts out standard video, and I have multiple small external LCD displays, I promptly tore one apart and made it into a portable display that would mount onto a $1 grip (best $1 worth of video equipment ever) in order to let me do low shots.

Since then, I made a custom cable, so I wouldn't have 10' of cable tied up. Plus, since the camera has automatic gain control (which makes quiet scenes full of static) I've now got a cable to plug the mic into my iPhone running the 4Track app. Records cd quality audio.

And since then I've now broken the display hacking it further. I'll have to fix some of the wiring.

Update:
I find that I almost never need the external screen. Still have good eyesight I guess. It would be handy to have the flip out screen from the 60D or T3i for low or high shots.

I used to record the audio onto the iPhone, but since I installed Magic Lantern, I've just been recording to the camera. You can turn off the automatic gain control that gives the hissing noises, and you even get a on screen level meter. There's also a triggered white balance that will find the white balance of what you're pointing at. So nice. Magic Lantern is highly recommended. Doubles the value of this camera easily.

How to avoid red flags on the Olympus XA1 at f4

Ever wish you could use higher speed film in your Olympus XA1?

Yes, that camera with the selenium meter, fixed focus (who knows exactly where it's focused - it may be at 12 feet? - universal focus, indeed) two speeds and only two ISO settings - 100 and 400 ASA... yes, that XA1 with all its gloriously odd specifications.

You can set the camera to shoot always at 1/30 at f4 by using a pin to push the locking pin up, as shown on the right.

Then flip the flash lever under the lens to the "flash" setting. This will circumvent the red flag that prevents exposure under low light.

The camera will stay on this setting even if you close the clamshell.

Now you can try 800, 1600, or 3200 speed films with all the Zuiko goodness at a fixed focus ~~at an aperture of f4~~.

NOTE: The aperture will adjust based on the selenium meter even in flash mode!

If only we new at what distance the lens is focused on!

Happy 200th

Olympus 'Veteran' C180/D435; this easy-blurring camera, was the director, manager, floor-manager, engineer... of most of the works seen here. Sometimes a coincidental inspiration; helpful when the original script didnt turn out to be. Hired as a family camera in its early years, it soon upgrade itself into the rank of misc. salesman, managed to stay away from the clan's cupboard-of-antiques, and into my toolbox-of-eternity.

Enough of, well factual crappingslar, this is Flickr.com! I wouldnt recommend this dude to anyone, but wont put it in yardsale either. Bought this cause it has 'loads of mode' for its humble pricing; right choice for a noobie, not later. You dont have the freedom to advance-adjust its settings (sort of like built in, or 3 in 1 coffee) like other similar camera allow. Slow shutter speed (refer pic above; normal for Olympuds, i guess), no speaker for movie mode (it was delivered via pidgeon carrier, and what a shocker!), small screen super wide picture, need to press really hard on the button, no popping lens, night mode sucks.... But image is fine, okay for pano, looks cute with chrome, ranked not bad in Flickr's list...

The pic was taken using a mirror this time, not the camera. Only flipped it in photoshop, so to spell the word C-A-M-E-D-I-A the right way, didnt change anything more. Here you go, guthen 200th job Olympud!

Oh and if anyone wants an opinion on which ones best. A place to unwind

Something of an experiment this, taken on a point and shoot compact as an in camera jpeg. I left the full kit at home for a relaxing day of walking and with a plan to take "sketches" for future projects. But i liked the way this came out and thought why not upload. We can get so hung up on the technical worries over quality and thats not what my photography is about, i still have no urge to go full frame. It won't improve my shots. I'm more tempted to get a good micro four thirds compact to take everywhere.

and e-ttl metering, many places it’s intimidating to pull out those big cameras,

We should all think in centuries

I love and hate this image.

I think the image itself is quite splendid. Those falls are just amazing. They have such a medieval or maybe it is primordial, quality to them. I have said before that if there are places of power, temples so to speak, to Nature, Falls Creek Falls in some forgotten day might very well have been such a place. And I can see that in this photo.

But the technical limitations of the camera I was shooting with really come back to haunt me. It was an old Nikon D1X, and it was not really meant for high quality landscape photography. Well it was not really meant for high quality anything. It's purpose in life was mostly a bang-around digital slr for photojournalists. An overpriced and underpowered camera that lost a lot of quality that the older professional film bodies achieved but at the same time facilitated the immediate response required by photojournalism. We can say all this in hindsight of course. When the D1 came out, it was top of the line, at least in terms of digital SLRs. And it did have its strengths, but especially compared to digital SLRs these days, it is a pretty worthless camera. What fascinates me though is remembering how fascinated people were by this generation of digital camera. Photographers jumped to buy these and other similar cameras when they hit the market, and this almost blind fervor did not end until the next generation of digital SLR hit and then it was completely replaced again by the third generation. Now digital cameras have gotten very very good indeed. The quality of today's digital cameras is not the issue I am driving at though, rather it was that these early cameras were honestly quite poor in terms of quality, yet they were such a must-have item. The consumer public really was so blind in its desire to jump on the digital photography bandwagon, that it overlooked the very obvious shortcomings of these cameras. I have to be very careful here, because I am not being a traditionalist, I am not bashing digital photography at all. What I am attempting to draw attention to rather is our sometimes raccoon-like trait of being mindlessly drawn to the shiny thing in the corner, seeing only that is shiny and not that it is actually on fire and covered in barbed wire. Not that I think digital photography is a physical hazard to one's health unless you walk over a cliff because you are staring at your LCD screen, but it does have some pitfalls and dangers which are a bit hidden, though they really ought not to be. Some of these shortcomings have been pretty well overcome, such as the quality issue. Gone are the days of the high-end 2 million pixel camera (remember those $400 gimmicks?) and the crummy digital printing. With cameras out now boasting up to 16 megapixels and beyond, it really is amazing the quality of images you can capture with some of these cameras. And while crummy digital printing still does exist, so does very nice, very beautiful digital printing.

But I carry on, and if I do not wrap this up shortly, by the time I am finished typing this is going to be overly long. I really posted this image because I just saw an insightful little article in The Oregonian I wanted to share. So I will commence with that. Again, please note, I am not trying to nay say digital photography, that is why I posted a digital image to go with it. I too shoot digitally on occasion. My point here rather is to try to educate, to possibly point out to some who may not realize it, on the dangers inherent in shooting digitally and to hopefully avoid some of the future problems those dangers can cause. I truly worry about the impermanence of the photographic work so many of us are doing. Where are these photos going to be in 20 years? 40? 60? 120? Will we be able to anything with that box of CDs in the attic in 30 years, or even 15 for that matter? Hard drives crash. Pictures just never get printed and eventually just deleted, lost forever. That mundane snapshot of your son when he is five, will he ever be able to appreciate it? There are some real concerns to address, and they do not necessarily lie with changing our technology, but rather in how we use our technology, and that begins with realizing what it can and does not do for us.

I have been waiting a while to post this image of Rowena Crest, mainly because I like to keep a bit of variety in the images I post and I already posted one pinscape from this same roll, though it was a fairly different picture.

The most exciting thing about this shot for me was that it was taken with new film, or rather new old film. This is shot with Efke IR820 infrared film and a red 29 filter taped to the inside of my pinhole. I used to be a big fan of Maco IR820, in no small part because it was about the only IR film one could get in 120, as Konica came out once a year and the Kodak HIE cut down from 70mm was drying up. The Maco allowed me to combine a pinhole's version of the world, but in infrared too. Alas, the Maco film was discontinued. It was shortly followed by a Rollei IR 120 film that proved to be disappointing; though I have seen good results from it, I have never achieved them myself. Then one day I saw this Efke film advertised on Freestyle's website and did some research. Turns out it is basically the same film as Maco just distributed by Efke. Sorry if this is getting overly long and in depth but it was exciting for me.

Photography right now for digital photographers is great. The cameras are getting better and cheaper. But for those of us who still like the qualities that film photography embodies, it is slowly getting a bit disheartening as manufacturers slowly abandon various films. Kodak Tech Pan, Maco IR, Konica Impressa, Agfa Ultra, Kodak UC. All of these were great films that allowed photographers to capture a vision of the world. It is sad that they have become casualties in the march towards "progress". It is not that I think these films delivered superiour images to modern digital cameras, it was just that they allowed different visions. Sure, many of these effects could be emulated through Photoshop, but I get much more satisfaction from my photography by matching up the characteristics of a film to a particular vision, or seeing how a film will render a particular scene in a way I cannot imagine, as opposed to manipulating a digital file on the computer to achieve the same effect.

So in summary, it is very encouraging to see a new film, or rather an old film, re-introduced. I think there is plenty of room (and legitimate use) for all types of photography, and though I highly doubt I will ever see the so-called death of film in my lifetime, every time we lose a brand of film, we are losing the ability to see the world in the way that only that film would have translated it. And I disagree that this has to be inevitable. But those are just my feelings. Ultimately as long as there are ways to capture images, on plates, paper, film or digital, I will continue to take pictures and explore worlds.

Day 3 of 365 - Future

I love this place, whenever i am in seattle i try and make it here. The employees are super friendly and know just about everything you could want to know! I talked to a guy about getting a D90, which will be my next purchase, unfortunately my pay check that came today was only $119.41 which makes my grand total roughly $300... Just shy of the $850 for the body only... The next guy i talked to was about college, he said Brooks would be a great school and also mentioned that seattle central community college has a great photography program. I will be doing some research on that tomorrow! When i am older i would love to own/work at a camera store similar to this one, that's if i'm not shooting for National Geographic.

Us and our nugget

This thing was the ultimate car for our trip :) So cheap to run. The US dollar stinks still. It cruised on the Autostrada at 75-85mph easily, and believe it or not these things have a ton of space for the occupants. Not a whole lot for the belongings, but enough for our two 22" roller suitcases, my camera bag, and day pack. All while not coming above the bottom of the back window :) The space is quite deceptive.
We picked the car up in Rome, and took the scenic route to Florence via Sienna. Then Florence to Pisa to San Gimagnano back to Florence, then Florence to Venice the next day. We filled it twice and did a total of 871 km (541miles) and averaged 38.35 miles to the gallon :) not bad considering the amount of city driving we did and also driving in the country side of Tuscany passing cyclists and slowing for all the small towns. I was very happy with it, and would buy one in a heart beat as a commuter car.

This morning I saw these two nice Austrian diesel engines at our local railway station in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary. They were there with a Rolling Highway train which made a detour here due to railroad construction works on the electrified main line. I went home to pick up my camera and came back to take some pictures of the two engines pulling out the train from the station quickly and quite silently.

I've had a proper gaming fix lately. My fingers itch for an epic game of Tetris with a formiddable opponent (not many haha). My old DS Lite was no longer in a condition to Tetris out :( The up key (hard drop) and A key (rotate tetramino) was worn out to a point where you can barely get it to work (people were noticing easy victories when a typical game would include a 20 win streak (well that's if i'm really angry or happy).

Anyway, tetris is one of my favourite games of all time and I noticed some new games on the DS are approaching the horizon so I thought it was time to get back into it all, in enters DSi. The improved console that's tailored for the individual (hence the i in the DS). I find most of the new features a bit shonky (the webcam in particular, the iPhone makes me cringe already, so a VGA camera will most likely be lulztastic), the DS shop is pretty fun but there's nothing new there (and a few games are just mini games from proper games). Hopefully things will take off more but for now it's going to be a fest of Tetris, The World Ends with YOU! Phoenix Wright! Brain Training and Kingdom Hearts.

Goose's eye view of Toronto

I've been trying to digitise more of my archive photographs of Toronto and other places. Whenever I was abroad on business I always had a small 35mm compact camera in my overcoat pocket, and would fill in some of my spare time by walking around the cities I was visiting and taking photographs.

Most of these were snaps of no great merit, but an interesting record/momento of the trips.

Now I come to revisit the archive I find - to my surprise and disappointment -that many of the negatives are in very poor condition (despite being carefully stored in protective sleeves etc.) They are often quite badly scratched and faded. If I scan them they need a lot of further editing and processing using PSP.

Where I still have them, I've found I can get as good results, if not better, by scanning the prints that were taken at the time.

The final result still is not brilliant, and certainly not as crisp as I'd like, but one or two are worth posting here.
