CAST STEEL BALL VALVES. BALL VALVES
Cast Steel Ball Valves. Atmospheric Relief Valve
Cast Steel Ball Valves
- (Ball valve) used to regulate the flow of water and to shut off skimmers, drains and other lines in order to vacuum or run a spa or water feature.
- (ball valve) any valve that checks flow by the seating of a ball
- A one-way valve that is opened and closed by pressure on a ball that fits into a cup-shaped opening
- (Ball valve) A ball valve is a valve with a spherical disc, the part of the valve which controls the flow through it. The sphere has a hole, or port, through the middle so that when the port is in line with both ends of the valve, flow will occur.
- Shapes that have been formed directly from liquid by casting into a mold. Formerly applied to wrought objects produced by working steel made by the crucible process to distinguish from that made by cementation of wrought-iron, but both of these methods are long obsolete.
- A steel mill (British English and Australian English steelworks) is an industrial plant for the manufacture of steel.
- A name used in the 19th and early 20th century for the carbon steel that was used in saws. It can be hardened and tempered with heat.
Indian Made Atomic Coffee Machine- Detail
In this detail you can see how long the valve pin is on the red ball part- far longer than normal. Also it is made of steel rater than the brass used on Italian made atomic machines.
Around 2006 brand new Atomic coffee makers started appearing on the market. For many years prior to this the only source of Atomic coffee makers was second hand markets and auction houses. Lucky individuals found one in the attic or at a church sale, but most people had to bid high, and pay through the nose. Atomics became extremely collectible.
However all was not as it seemed with these new machines. Although they were labeled as being Bon Trading (australia) imports of Italian made Atomics- they were poorly made with a rough, hand finished appearance. Many of them did not work very well, and they were 'not quite right'...
It was soon discovered that these machines were made in India and falsely labeled as being 'made in Italy'. The prices paid for Indian atomics dropped rapidly and then they disappeared from the market altogether. Today it is hard to find one - and they are collectible in their own right.
For the keen collector interested in purchasing an Atomic it is a simple matter to identify one of these fakes. The most prominent difference between these machine and earlier Italian made atomics is the boiler plug. On the Indian machine this plug sticks out in an ugly fashion. Other obvious differences can be seen in the bakelite parts. These parts are much thicker and are poorly formed compared to vintage atomic machines. The filter basket is distinctive: the holes in it appear to be randomly punched in with a nail or similar implement randomly by hand.
These machine are not too bad as a hand finished attempt to replicate the atomic form. It is by no means an easy (or cheap) process. Sand casting the body is an art in itself. It is clear this machine was reverse engineered from an Italian made Atomic- probably a model dating from the 70's. The example pictured hear is a working one and the original purchasers (who were fooled into believing it was from Italy) actually used it to make coffee for several years. However we would not recommenced using one to actually to make coffee: these machine are poorly made from inferior materials. There are rumors the alloy was recycled from car parts...

1924 Triumph 350cc Side Valve - National Motorcycle Museum
The Model LS - Light Solo - was something of an anomally because although outwardly looking like a Triumph its design was totally different to any other Triumph model.
It was shown at the 1922 Motor Cycle Show at Olympia and re-announced a year later, but was not available until April 1924. With the death of Charles Hathaway in 1915 Triumph didn't really have a designer and the successive models to the Model H were really just improvements and changes to that machine.
However, Triumph started producing cars in 1923 and Frank Parnell was Triumph's chief designer for those. It is my opinion that it was car designer Parnell who was responsible for the design of the Model LS. This would not only explain the delay in the final design for production (the 1922 Show model probably had no engine internals) for Parnell was busy with the cars, and it would also explain why the Model LS was so different to other Triumphs, and why it attracted few motorcyclist purchasers.
Unlike any other Triumph, or even most other motor cycles at that time, the engine was built very much on car design. It had a lubrication system with the oil in a sump, and its distribution under pressure followed the modern car engine design of the period. Engine and gearbox were as one, with a multitude of gears connecting all. It was also unlike any other Triumph motor cycle in so far as it didn't even drip oil!
With so much concentration on producing a car-like engine little thought was given to the rest of the machine and appears not to have been tested on the road. That seems to have been left to the testers of the two motor cycle magazines, who reported most unfavourably on its unsuitability for use on the road.
The magazine testers both commented on the footrests being too far forward, and due to that the cold wind got under one tester's coat, plus the wide handlebars hit his knees when attempting to turn. The front brake would not hold on a rising slope and a foot had to be lifted from the footrest to operate the rear brake.
Triumph made changes, but if the machine was fitted with electric lighting the original wide handlebars were fitted in order to clear the battery, which being mounted above the tank was surely an after-thought by someone not accustomed to designing a motor cycle.
With availability almost eighteen months after the initial announcement, and road test reports indicating that it was not a pleasant machine to ride, it is not surprising that sales were disappointing. Thus few survive today, but for the engineering quality, alone, one should be considered if there is space in one's garage.

First Flat Tyre, Birdsville Track
Here is a lesson in how not to use an exhaust jack. The exhaust jack
is a strong plastic cylinder-shaped bag that is inflated with the
exhaust. It lifts a car up. A one way valve stops it deflating while
you are changing the tyre, or digging out a bogged car. The jacks
have a big "footprint" and are useful on soft or very uneven ground.
I had not used one before - but I had read the instructions. I
unpacked it, got the spare ready, chocked the tyres as recommended and
loosened the wheel nuts. I put the jack under the rear diff housing
least likely to puncture the bag. I started the engine and put the
jack's hose funnel on the exhaust. Pressure built up. I was not
holding the funnel on the exhaust and when I was checking the bag's
progress the funnel blew off the exhaust pipe. A huge cloud of diesel
soot blasted me in the face and settled all over the ground as if I
had just cleaned out a chimney.
Next problem was that the jack was not inflating vertically. It was
kinked in the side, and moving away from the flat tyre. The Landrover
started to raise and twist a little, shifting the chocks. I tried to
reach the bag's valve to let the Landrover back down. It was squashed
because of the bag's angle and I could not reach it without crawling
under the car - which I was not going to do. The flat tyre was still
not raised high enough to change. I ended getting out the normal jack
which unfortunately was in the centre of the second spare tyre, right
in the middle of the gear in the back of the Landrover. However, once
I had it, in two minutes with no sweat, the car jacked straight up and
I had changed the tyre. The exhaust jack was still a problem. After
failing to untwist the valve by prodding at it with the normal-jack's
handle. I ended up driving forward slightly, which rolled the bag on
its side. Now I could reach the valve and deflate (more diesel soot)
the bag.

HIGH PRESSURE BUTTERFLY VALVES. HIGH PRESSURE
High pressure butterfly valves. Knife gate valve dimensions.
High Pressure Butterfly Valves
- A valve consisting of a pair of semicircular plates that are attached to a spindle across a pipe and hinged to allow flow only one way
- (butterfly valve) a valve in a carburetor that consists of a disc that turns and acts as a throttle
- (Butterfly Valve) A water control device with a narrow disc mounted in the water flow path that can be turned so the disc is aligned with the path allowing water to pass by it, or perpendicular to the path to stop the flow.
- A valve consisting of a disk rotating on an axis across the diameter of a pipe to regulate the flow, as in the throttles of many engines
- A butterfly valve is a valve which can be used for isolating or regulating flow. The closing mechanism takes the form of a disk. Operation is similar to that of a ball valve, which allows for quick shut off.
- High pressure science and engineering is studying the effects of high pressure on materials and the design and construction of devices, such as a diamond anvil cell, which can create high pressure.
- hard-hitting: aggressively and persistently persuasive; "a hard-hitting advertising campaign"; "a high-pressure salesman"
- A high-pressure area is a region where the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the planet is greater than its surrounding environment. Winds within high-pressure areas flow outward due to the higher density air near their center and friction with land.

1:100 Macross VF-1A "Valkyrie" - U.N.S. Marines use
During a landing exercise with heavy equipment, U.N.S. Marines' SVMF-40 Valkyries provide close air support and secure the beach area from hardened targets with thier precision bombs, and mark hidden targets and hazardous areas with unguided smoke rockets.
Another Valkyrie which was inspired by the "Variable Fighter Master File: VF-1 Valkyrie" sourcebook, published 2009 by SoftBank Creative. This book is HIGHLY recommended to anyone who is into the VF-1 - it is pure robot porn! ;)
Well, the book contains a vast gallery of color variants - and this U.N.S. Marines Valkyrie was among them. I immediately got caught by the 2 tone camouflage, which is not a "copy" of something in existence, but very original and... cool (even though US Air Force F-15 and Chile F-16 influences cannot be denied?).
The kit is a standard vintage 1:100 scale ARII Valkyrie Fighter, built right out of the box. As usual, it underwent standard "pimping" procedures with a pilot figure and cockpit details, plus some typical antennae.
As special extras, though, flaps and wing leading edges were slightly extended and the air brake behind the cockpit opened (the red inside is a great color contrast), as if the machine was slowing down and stabilizing for a ground attack.
Another personal detail which I deemed appropriate is a small sensor "turret" under the nose, containing a laser designator and an IR camera. It was inspired by the TRAM system which had been installed on A-6E "Intruder" bombers in order to enhance this aircraft's all-weather capabilities.
Furthermore, this rather beefy Valkyrie received custom underwing ordnance. It consists of two slim rocket launchers (for target marking purposes) which come from an old Kovazavody MiG-17 kit, and a pair of scratch-built gliding bombs - inspired by GBU-8 "HOBOS" and GBU-10 "Paveway" glide bombs, but more or less a fictional mix of both of these weapons in style.
Since the paint scheme is an original design, I decided to go for the source book's look, not sticking to US/FS tones. Therefore, the basic tones are Humbrol 106 (Ocean Grey) and 64 (Light Grey). The white trims on fins and legs were painted in White, the blue stripes at the cockpit and on the fins are all decals from the scrap box, just like the numbers and letters.
After basic painting, the kit received a black ink wash. This toned down the greys considerably, reducing contrast a lot! Instead of adding dry paint, which would make the small scale kit look rather dirty, I decided to try a different technique: I used a fine sand paper to wet sand some larger areas and "expose" clean paint. The effect is interesting: now the Valkyrie looks rather weathered and sun-bleached. After a coat of matte varnish, the kit additionally received some rubbing with grinded soft pencil mine (which yields a nice metallic/oily shine) and dry painting with Humbrol 53 (Gun Metal) in certain areas.
With its special equipment, here's a ground attack Valkyrie which is capable of all-weather CAS with precision weapons - a hard job which matches the gritty and weathered look!

PISTON VALVE - PISTON
Piston Valve - Watts Mixing Valve - Replacing A Water Valve
Piston Valve
- A piston valve is a device used to control the motion of a fluid along a tube or pipe by means of the linear motion of a piston within a chamber or cylinder.
- A type of gas-distribution valve, in which an oscillating piston covers and uncovers circumferential openings in a cylinder.
- (Piston valves) Piston valves are an integral part of the cylinder arrangement of a steam locomotive. They control the admission and exhaustion of steam from the cylinders, enabling a locomotive to move under its own power.
Piston from said damage
This is the cylinder - after said damage....
In Detail:
The #3 ex gasket was blown - thus letting cold air into the chamber (when engine was turned off) and the lattice of the metal in the valve was ruined, and the #3 ex valve head broke off, slammed the ex seat sideways, bashed up the cylinder, got stuck in between the #3intake valve and the piston and shoved the intake valve into the head, and thus breaking the #3 intake rocker arm literally in 2, bending the pushrod, AND exploding the lifter inside the case...
luckily, the case, crank, rods, were all undamaged.

RELIEF VALVE WATER HEATER : WATER HEATER
RELIEF VALVE WATER HEATER : WEIGHT OF BALL VALVES : 22 SOLENOID VALVE.
Relief Valve Water Heater
- A device designed to open if it detects excess temperature or pressure. Commonly found on water heating or steam producing systems.
- safety valve: a valve in a container in which pressure can build up (as a steam boiler); it opens automatically when the pressure reaches a dangerous level
- The relief valve (RV) is a type of valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system or vessel which can build up by a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, or fire.
- a heater and storage tank to supply heated water
- Water heating is a thermodynamic process using an energy source to heat water above its initial temperature. Typical domestic uses of hot water are for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and space heating. In industry, both hot water and water heated to steam have many uses.
- An appliance for heating water above its ambient temperature, generally for domestic use
Romex clamp, if qualified
CAUTION: Only qualified individuals should be allowed to work with electricity. Do not peform the actions seen and described here unless you are qualified
CAUTION: After you've made all your solder joints and reattached the pressure relief tubing, open your home's water valves and the valve to the tank and allow water to flow. It may take several minutes for your faucets to stop spitting out air, and flow water continuously. Run the faucets on both the hot and cold, until your system is fully charged with fresh water. Failure to do so before re-wiring and turning on your new heater, will void the warranty and cause it to burn out.
Here we are attaching the romex clamp by turning it onto the nut underneath. We do not need to turn the nut, so much as the top portion with the screws, using a pair of channel locks. Performing this, and all work, should be done with the statement "in a neat, and workman-like manner" in mind. Meaning for instance, these screw heads should be facing a logical direction when done, such as perpendicular to a wall, and not such that you need to hold your screwdriver over by the water pipe to get to the screw heads. The same goes when putting in all valves. Take the time to think, and position each piece so that there's neatness and strategy behind it. Another example of this strategy might be how I positioned my shutoff valve to face the opposite way of the pressure relief tube. That way, if something happens and the relief tube is blasting out hot water. I may be able to go to the OPPOSITE side of the tank, to turn off the valve, since that's where I strategically positioned it.
Old pipes cut, not reusing valve
Old water heater after being cut with a tubing cutter, for replacement with the new unit. I believed the valve on this old unit to be bad, so decided not to re-use it. Which by the way, supports the reasoning for shutting the water off in more places than just at this valve! It is also NOT adviseable to re-use a pressure relief valve, since they tend to be corroded with minerals inside that can cause them not to shut off all the way after being operated.

- (pneumatically) in a pneumatic manner; "at the present time the transmission is very often done hydraulically or pneumatically"
Outlet valve
This picture shows the filter outlet valve on the same system. This valve involves electrical, pneumatic and fluid flow elements and if it was to be stripped down the system would require careful draining down and isolation of electrical and pneumatic systems before work could commence.

SOLENOID VALVE DIAGRAM. SOLENOID VALVE
Solenoid valve diagram. Hancock valves. Rexroth proportional valve.
Solenoid Valve Diagram
- Valve that is actuated with a electromagnetic solenoid magnet. 2 possible variations, NC (naturally closed) which is closed when there is no current applied and NO (naturally open) which is open when no current is applied
- A solenoid valve is an electromechanical valve for use with liquid or gas. The valve is controlled by an electric current through a solenoid coil.
- A quick-opening valve which is mounted on a pressurized tank. The opening of the valve generates a cleaning pulse which dislodges the dust from the filter elements.
- make a schematic or technical drawing of that shows interactions among variables or how something is constructed
- (diagramming) schematization: providing a chart or outline of a system
- A simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something; a schematic representation
- A figure composed of lines that is used to illustrate a definition or statement or to aid in the proof of a proposition
- a drawing intended to explain how something works; a drawing showing the relation between the parts

STAINLESS STEEL SPRING CHECK VALVES - SPRING CHECK VALV
Stainless Steel Spring Check Valves - Engine Valve Manufacturers.
Stainless Steel Spring Check Valves
- steel containing chromium that makes it resistant to corrosion
- A form of steel containing chromium, resistant to tarnishing and rust
- In metallurgy stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5 or 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as ordinary steel, but it is not stain-proof.
- (Stainless steels) Steels that are corrosion and heat resistant and contain a minimum of 10% to 12% chromium. Other alloying elements are often present.
- (Check valve) A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.
- A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid
- (Check valve) used to provide flow through a pipe in one direction only. When installed between an external filter and the pond, it keeps the dirty water in the filter from flowing back into the pond if power is lost. They are also used to keep an external pump primed if power is lost.
- (Check valve) A device inserted into a moving liquid stream that allows flow of the stream in only one direction; most often used on the inlet and outlet sides of an HPLC pump.
- Operate or cause to operate by means of a mechanism
- Move rapidly or suddenly from a constrained position by or as if by the action of a spring
- a metal elastic device that returns to its shape or position when pushed or pulled or pressed; "the spring was broken"
- Move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward
- the season of growth; "the emerging buds were a sure sign of spring"; "he will hold office until the spring of next year"
- jump: move forward by leaps and bounds; "The horse bounded across the meadow"; "The child leapt across the puddle"; "Can you jump over the fence?"
DSCF0304
Here is the finished bolt reinstalled in the manifold. It's loose enough to turn easily by hand at this point.
Another solution from the VCCA site:
A mate of mine had a 1938 Business Coupe that came from New Zealand, and it had a pronounced exhaust leak from between the heat control valve shaft and the exhaust manifold.
After taking off the manifold,we found the valve plate itself
was in real good order,we just had to figure out how to eliminate
the leak.
After marking the position of the plate in relation to the pin that retains the bi-metallic spring,I drilled out the spot welds holding the plate to the shaft. The shaft & the manifold were both badly worn,so I set the manifold up on the milling machine table, and put a cutter through that was 7/16" in diameter.
I then made 2 cast iron bushes as it would expand and contract at the same rate as the manifold.A new shaft was made out of high tensile high temperature stainless steel. The shaft &
valve plate were then "timed" to the pin for the bi-metallic spring, and a couple of spots with the mig had the valve plate fixed to the shaft securely.
I then hooked up the bi-metallic spring and checked to make sure it hold the plate in the "on" position when the engine was cold, and used a hot air gun to heat the spring up,and watched to make sure it gradually opened up as it heated up,which it did.
Then I liberally applied a chain & wire rope spray lube that contained a lot of graphite & moly-disulphide anti seize compounds, and problem solved.
No more exhaust leak, and a working heat control valve.
Water pump assembly
The machining of the pump is complete. The fine spring for the check valve was shop made from .009" stainless steel wire.

TIRE VALVES TYPES. VALVES TYPES
TIRE VALVES TYPES. ELECTRIC SOLENOID WATER VALVE. PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE SYMBOL.
Tire Valves Types
- A valve stem is a self-contained valve which opens to admit gas to a chamber (such as air to inflate a tire), and is then automatically closed and kept sealed by the pressure in the chamber, or a spring, or both, to prevent the gas from escaping.
- (Tire valve) The fitting in the valve stem of the wheel that allows you to inflate or deflate the tire.
- (type) a subdivision of a particular kind of thing; "what type of sculpture do you prefer?"
- A person of a specified character or nature
- (type) character: a person of a specified kind (usually with many eccentricities); "a real character"; "a strange character"; "a friendly eccentric"; "the capable type"; "a mental case"
- A category of people or things having common characteristics
- A person, thing, or event considered as a representative of such a category
- (type) write by means of a keyboard with types; "type the acceptance letter, please"
GAZ 66. Gorki-1
Produced by the million, and used often by our foes. The Gaz66 are extremely reliable and make ideal medium size expedition vehicles, manufactured in Nizhmy Novogorod, Southern Russia. Production ran from 1964 to the late eighties.
They are best described as really tough cookies, and well known for there iron reliability and are bags of fun to drive as well. On Wikipedia they are described as follows "The Gaz-66 has gained legendary status in many countries around the world due to its reliability, simplicity and off-road capability".
The cabs are extremely well sound proofed, and often come with a very useful flat tray over the engine cover, perfect for your satnav.
Overall the Gaz is extremely reliable and ideal for those long expeditions to the far corners of the world, or just remote camping locations in Sutherland or lake district, where you want to be in the hills, but in comfort and not on a heaving site in August. Remember, these trucks were designed firstly for the soviet military and designed specifically for use in extreme climates with temperatures vary between minus to plus fifty degree’s, and of course to be driven by conscript drivers who didn’t care and would there best to destroy them. Often drivers would be told to drive hundreds of miles, and only allowed to stop for fuel. This is the kind of engineering you are dealing with here.
Construction is straight forward, being Russian you have lots of toys to play with. You have a compressor to inflate the tyres, this can done inside the cab. Or, you can deflate for softer ground. The compressor line goes to the rear and has valve setup for trailer towing with a twist air fitting. Brakes are conventional hydraulic, but you two remote servo assemblies. One the rear chassis member you not only have your air connections but a standard caravan power plug wired the same. Electrics are 12volts, but you have a huge alternator powered by two ‘V’ type belts.
The engine is a conventional V8, and is built for reliability. Block and heads are aluminium with wet liners with easy access to drain taps. Electrics are all waterproofed, in a protective shielding, and distributor is electronic. You have a controls to a radiator louver to shut off air for those extreme cold spells and for the minus fifty you have a separate petrol fired central heating system, this not only warms the coolant it warms the engine oil as well.
Transmission is conventional synchromesh, with a high a low transfer unit, control by two levers inside the cab. Handbrake is remote on the propshaft like a landy, but during normal operation you have servo assistance giving you belt and braces holding method. Axles are normal but you a limited slip rear diff.
Ergonomics of the cab are very comfortable, driving position is high to look over the vehicles in front, but you have a front wheel hub. The cab tilts to gain access to the engine area, but you can gain access from inside the cab via a lift up panel.
The rear box is of a modern strong but light, composite structure. Outer skin is two millimetre aluminium, inner is five millimetre ply with four millimetre ribs going to the outer skin running from side to side. The voids are filled with solid isocynate foam (like your expandable foam when dry). The floor again is ply but fifty, yes fifty millimetres thick. Windows are doubled glazed, and an independent diesel heater warms the back.

If you look really hard you can see before and after...
Imagine if you will for a second that there was a toilet (poorly installed-barley functioning-baby powdered blue-ill fitting white shell shaped toilet seat-rock and roll style toilet) on the left where you can still see the water coming up through the floor. Now on the right, you see the new hole underneath the handy paint pad waiting for us to put a toilet in. We spent the day, laying new peal, stick, and swear flooring down where the new toilet is going to go, and working on prepping the wall with white paint (covered in a previous rant). Now, we would have had new cold water pipe run up there today, but no -- it couldn't be that simple. The water would not quit dripping long enough (yes we shut it off) for the flux to seal up around the new copper pipe shut off valve. So dad went to the hardware store (thankgoodness for dad's who help out) and at round three with the valve tried the new fancy compression valve, snap click, 1-2-3 it was that easy.. and nothing is dripping and everything works just like it should now. Stay tuned.. the conclusion will be fast coming, because our house is still on the marketing during all of this so we are working quickly. Or has quickly as the home improvement gods will allow us to.
DSCN1129
The upstairs bathroom with the vanity and toilet removed before we started pulling the floor. We had replaced the valve ends on the hot and cold water supply. There were three levels of flooring down.

How it looks once you dry the floor
The white thing to the left/bottom foreground
is the water heater.
The pvc pipe to the center with
the check valve is the waste water pipe.
Because this part of the house is
"below grade", any waste water
in this part of the house
must be pumped up and out
in order to get to the septic tank outside
which is below ground, but above
the level of the floor in this part of the house.
Water, as the high school chemistry teachers
tell us, "seeks it's own level".
A more accurate phrase for this situation would be
an old Army addage...
"$h*t rolls down hill".
The pvc pipe to the right of the waste water
pipe is merely a vent. It allows noxious vapors
to pass outside, all the way up to the roof where
the wind disperses them.
Just above my toe is the clean out port
which allows access to the waste water pipes
in the house for using a snake to clear blockages.
