floor tile - untitled - grouted in black 05/24/09 I painted on this floor tile a few months ago and just recently put all the glass on it. The beads in the middle are the clear plastic kind - I painted them to match the design under the beads. Needs lots of clean up and I would like to figure out a way to frame this thing even though this sucker is heavy as it is. That's the only thing I don't like about using floor tiles for indoor art - they look unfinished to me without a frame. I'll figure out something eventually. I still have tons of big floor tiles to play with! fireplace tile floor - before the tiles and grout were stained so badly - nothing I tried could clean them, so I decided to paint instead... Sears promised a new oven element and glass top element by Wednesday to GP on the phone...of course...he neglected to ask what month or year....so .... my children are going to be treated to Turkey Dinner at Fort Henry on mum and dad's dime...sigh....it won't be the same...you can't get up and go back and pick at the turkey while you are cleaning up....but on the upside there will be no cleaning up to do :) hopefully my element will be in by Christmas otherwise Santa is getting me a new stove and that means the new camera will be on hold :-(. the stove is breakie truman says "breakie" instead of broken, he has trouble with long 'o' sounds. and indeed, we have some major breakie here at the house. jonathan -- while putting clean dishes away, ones that he had washed during a huge kitchen cleanse -- dropped a big pot on the glass-top stove and breakie it. replacement top is $100 -- two burners work well and the third works with a slight amount of mental discomfort. i'm unable to pull the trigger on replacement due to my hope that we're due to discover the gas stove of my dreams, instead. clean glass top stoves Ready-Select Controls: Easily select options with the touch of a button. There was a stainless steel countertop just ahead of the steamline. This where the cooks took your order for how you wanted your eggs cooked and where they served food that came off the grill. The hallway outside this door ran half the length of the building with a bench almost as long with pegs above it to hang field jackets, etc. on when it rained or snowed and the bench was high enough that you could put boots under it. The cooks must have had the trays and plates net to them or behind them because I do not remember having a place to help yourself buffet style. A flash of remembrance: One of the cooks who cycled in about the time that Sergeant Seymour got out of the AF was a tall blond guy named Roger Dixon. He was standing on a heavy wooden plank laid across the steam line to clean the stainless steel above the steam line. He slipped and dropped his foot into the almost boiling hot water. He nearly ended up with New England Boiled Foot. They had a bear of a time getting his shoe and sock off without peeling skin off. He was out of commission for a couple weeks or so and then on limited duty for some time after that. It didn't work very well, was terribly noisy and was horrible to try to keep clean ~ so out it went one day whilst Adrian was at work ;-D The nasty yellow stains on the cabinets are where they had pine-effect cladding 'stuff' (Lordy, I can't remember what the dratted stuff is called!); it was beyond cleaning, to be honest, so off it came. At some point, I may well decoupage these cabinet sides :-) I should have taken a photo of this little cupboard BEFORE I emptied it out LOL It had become a dumping ground for empty storage jars, cutlery from Aunt Mary, baking dishes, etc. I've decided to make good use of it by keeping tea, coffee, hot chocolate, Horlicks, etc in there. I would love to set out a cute tray on the worktop, but alas I have to conserve as much space as I possibly can, since I only really have one little area to work on. I got this cabinet, the little corner shelf and the area around them cleaned but it took me such a long time! It's a job that hasn't been done since way before my back went, so I'm sure you can imagine the grease, grime and dust I had to work my way through :-0 The wall still looks pretty horrible but at least I know it's clean now :-) Will post some 'after' photos once I get the job finished. Stove, cleaned. I still need a stronger cleaner or perhaps a longer soak + elbow grease for the lower-left (primary) burner, but this is pretty good for now. Bath's Hot? Shower's Cold? I Don't Fully Understand UK Plumbing... Ok, so that's not totally true. I actually think this bath spigot is brilliant. It has a short shower head that's perfect for keeping warm during a long bath (mmm.... long bath), cleaning the tub (not that its my job... this is in a hotel, but I could use one at home), or spraying off your shoes when you've been walking up and down the beach. What I don't understand... some UK faucets. Many of them have a hot spigot, and then on the other side, a cold one. That is to say, they don't come out the same place! What happens if I don't want scalding hot, or freezing cold? Do I flail wildly in the hopes that they'll mix in my hand? day 27:365 gratitude::my shower i don't generally share my shower with anyone... ;) ...but i love my showers, don't you just think better in the shower? clears your head, relaxes you, it's a wonderful thing and yes i am grateful for my shower today. I was on a spring cleaning spree and almost forgot to take one! First of all I noticed that when I help him to my ear, there where strange clicking noised coming from deep in his throat like a bubble poppong in his windpipe. Then I noticed he is fine when he moves but when he is still he kind of sways. I also noticed that he has not touched his water sinse about wednesday. he is eating and I checked hsi teeth which are fine. His coat is a little lack lustre compared to morgoth. Does anyone have any ideas. while he is not to bad I am going to wait til mon to take him to the vet otherwise I can't really afford out of hours costs Before teeth cleaning Augie is having his teeth cleaned tomorrow for the first time in his 6 years. The Easy Way is Hard Enough This time in Peter’s Valley I had stayed in one of the homes they have there. I confess I made housing decisions in the midst of all kinds of work discussions. Long story short, I had no idea what I had done. I arrived to find myself assigned a ramshackle farmhouse with a front door that wouldn’t shut, vines crawling through my bedroom window and 6 housemates who were all Blacksmiths. I admit I had what can only be described as location bends when I first arrived. No screen door, no window in my room, peeling paint everywhere, no television, just the occasional banging coming from the Blacksmith studio. Somewhere in the first night I knew I had to take a deep breath and let go. I did and that was the moment the magic began...... or shall I say my vacation. On the last night there, I went to the Blacksmith shop to visit my new friends in their studio. Someone had written on the wall “The Easy Way is Hard Enough”. I couldn't agree more. Clear and Easy Way (But, will you really choose the easy way?) God always takes the simplest way. The two-part season debut "King of the Greenie Board" and "Rules of Engagement" find Harm defending a young fellow flier who kills three Russian peacekeepers he mistakenly thought were Serbian troops attacking Bosnian civilians. Meanwhile, Harm’s replacement back at JAG headquarters is a tough-looking and ambitious Aussie named Brumby (Trevor Goddard), who has romantic feelings for Harm’s longtime colleague, Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), the latter promoted to full colonel in season five. No sooner does that case wrap up then Harm finds himself dealing, in "True Callings," with another pilot who took deceptive measures to smuggle a pregnant Bosnian aboard the carrier for medical treatment. Befitting the title, Harm has to face the music about his work: he’s too old to ramp up his flying career. Returning to JAG central, he gets handed the usual mix of uncomfortable and mysterious cases. In "Front and Center," Harm and Bud (Patrick Labyorteaux) discover a crucial witness in an attempted rape case is actually not whom he says he is--in fact, he’s disappeared rather than have his identity found out. The unusual "Psychic Warrior" finds Harm, Mac, Bud, Brumby and Admiral Chegwidden (John M. Jackson) on both sides of a case involving the death of an officer who was both a "pharmacological nightmare" (taking a dangerous mix of anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications) and a volunteer in a strange, Navy program investigating the paranormal. "Contemptuous Words" is a different kind of JAG episode in which Harm is accused of writing a newspaper editorial heatedly critical of the U.S. president, a big no-no in the military. While the wrath of the government falls on him, Harm’s JAG friends work at figuring out who has such a grudge against him that they’d see him go to jail for years. "Ghosts of Christmas Past" is another offbeat tale, this one concerning Harm’s late father (also a navy pilot) and a 1969 visit to the latter’s carrier from a Bob Hope USO tour. While actors have been cast as such Vietnam-era celebrities as Phyllis Diller and Diana Ross, the cast of JAG play fictional characters from that earlier time. (It’s a gimmick, but it’s fun.) Finally, "The Witches of Gulfport" is a weird story concerning Mac’s undercover investigation of a Wiccan group made up of Navy personnel. (Who knew there are witches and warlocks in the Navy?) Many of us have heard stories about it and have opinions of it, but few have actually seen it. I was fortunate enough catch up with CAG Member Tom Brooks and experience some true “Pay Lakin’”. I first met Tom at the Ohio CAGI last year. A mutual friend in Indianapolis, Charley Napier, had told me a lot of interesting things about Tom so I was excited to meet him. We shared some stories and I was intrigued by the "paylaking" methods and techniques. While making plans for a fishing trip to a few of the Southern States in May of this year, I discovered Tom was going to attend the TN Fish In, an event I planned on attending during my trip. I contacted him and we made plans for me to follow him home to NC after the Fish In and he would "show me the ropes" at a pay lake or two. While following Tom from TN to NC I had some time to think about the past few days at the TN Fish In where Wayne Trapp, John Abrams and the guys put on a great event. They really did their homework on the venue and spent plenty of time chumming it up so we could all be on fish. Tom was on top of his game, he and his grandson easily out caught everyone else. Tom showed us all how to make some “Grits Pack” and before the weekend was over we were all fishing, and catching, with it on at least one rod. This gave me even more reason to be excited about the upcoming days at the Pay Lakes. After a good night sleep we were up bright and early to head to “MIDWAY I”. As we drove down the road towards the lakes I was impressed with how well kept the area was. There are 3 lakes, 2 for carp and one for catfish. The whole place has a park like atmosphere; somewhere you would take your family fishing. This is one of two locations run by the Crawford brothers Keith and Tony. These guys take a lot of pride in running good clean family oriented facilities. They got their start from their Dad who passed away last year shortly after the 20th anniversary of the lake. Other than Keith, Tony and a few of their crew members nobody else was around. The lake is closed on Mondays so they can do maintenance and prepare for the upcoming week of events. I was in for a real treat not only were they going to let us fish, they also invited a few of the local anglers to give me a taste of pay lake gear and techniques. Nelson Ervin runs the “Carp Shack” at MIDWAY I and gave us the grand tour. This shack is equipped with everything from rods, reels and terminal tackle to custom made rod holders. The basics/staples of pack baits; Grits, Oats, Soybean meal and Millet were also available along with a most impressive flavor selection, over 300 of which are from R&W Carp Juice. Some had easily recognizable names such as TUTTI FRUTTI and BANANA while others had quite unique names such as KRYPTONITE, LINE STRETCHER AND LIP LOCK. Anything and everything you would need to fish at the pay lake is right at your fingertips.Also inside the shack are the pegs used for the peg draw before a competition. Once everyone pays their fee for the day’s competition your name is drawn and assigned to a number. You then take the peg with the corresponding number on it and place it on the lake map board where you chose to fish for the day. Some of the local anglers started to arrive and it was time to fish. I wanted to see how my “Euro” gear would fair so I set up as I normally would. Side hooked sweet corn on one rod and artificial corn on a hair dipped in flavoring on the other, method mix and bolt rigs on both. Tom used some grits pack he showed me how to make earlier with a flavored “puff” on the hook as a “pick up”. The rest of the local folks used similar set ups. It didn’t take long for Tom and some of the others to get into some fish while I watched my alarms lay silent. This gave me ample time to talk to everyone and satisfy some of my curiosity about pay lakes. A typical set up consists of bait casters, monofilament line and 7’ rods place in rod holders specifically designed for the pay lakes. Everyone was very friendly and as interested in my gear and bait as I was in theirs. Nelson invited me into the Carp Shack to show me how he makes ketchup/rice pack. He then came down to the lake set up next to me and promptly started catching fish. I then decided it was time to switch tactics and soon after I was into fish as well. Nelson offered me the opportunity to angle with a few fish using his gear as well. It was quite different but I got the hang of it and was able to put a fish or two on the bank. What struck me most about the things I had learned about pay lake methods today was not how different it is than “euro” methods but the similarities between the two; Pack-baits and Method mix, Pick-ups and Hook-baits, Rod Holders w/alarms and Rod Pods w/alarms. Each method has been tuned to use under certain circumstances. As aftern around july 4th, fish experience Maybe taking photo of this is possible too. Then we today, tried to video it with our tiny digital camera, which has 2 min or so of small video recording capcity. Above image is a crop from that video footages. +Yesterday's spot was taken over by kids today, so we couldn't go. +It seems around noon fish aren't hungry much, but still we were able to find a spot where fish gathers (around feet...) +We wondered how much this is known. (Neither of us is really native here.) +Looked around and wondered how being surronded by this kind of nature - is not really reflecting back into American culture and life style. +This is more closer to what we saw in the video - NHK's BS? - about Satoyama thing. Carp is kept to clean up the water coming out of washing sink. +Next time, calculate the footage length, during that remain silent, and angle and lighting - best way. If I have an actual checklist of items I think I will be more inclined to actually attempt to complete them. This list is a living list, meaning it will change and be modified as the year progesses. Maybe I'll revisit it a little later in the year to see how we're doing. I have also made myself a weekly checklist of chores to accomplish around the house. All the regular things that I just can't bring myself to do until the need to do them is almost unbearable (ie: dusting, sweeping the floors, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, etc). I am using this as the first step in breaking away from this unmotivated, lethargic, lazy, procrastinating mode I've been in the past few months. I still think that it is largely just remnants of being burned out from my previous employment. (14) my Lady and the child Jesus ..... I was attending a seminar in Talisay, Batangas about 11 years ago when I saw this framed image in my room (it was a 2 .... day live in seminar) which I found really beautiful. The image was that of a pencil sketch of the Madonna and Child. I took a picture of it using my AE-1 Canon film camera and a tripod. I had it converted from a negative to a positive slide, used the slide a couple of times then I kept it among my old stuff. The other day we did some summer cleaning. I saw my old and dusty Kodak film scanner along with a whole bunch of film and decided to check if the scanner still worked. And it still did! Then I saw the slide. It was in very bad condition. I scanned it, post processed it and this (above) is that image. If you take a look at this image up close you will be able to see a lot of dust marks and scratches that the slide had accumulated over the years. I decided to leave some of the dust and scratches on the image, giving it an 'aged' look (which it really was .... aged, I mean). As I was working on the slide, certain memories persistently popped into my head about a TV program .... or more precisely credit trailers of a show where people were throwing and destroying porcelain or plaster images of my Lady to the floor. It was a religious TV program, definitely not catholic. The figurines were breaking into pieces in slow motion. It didn't bother me then. I was not really a very religious man. That was a long time ago ... that TV show. Now .... I realize that I find myself disturbed. Feelings of hurt and disbelief surfaced while I was working on the image. I asked myself .... how can people so attack and show such disrespect to the mother of Jesus while preaching His (Jesus) words ? I could not grasp the veil of ignorance or spite or hate this people had in their minds for the Mother of the Man they worshipped. These were the times when new 'religions' where cropping up left and right each proclaiming exclusivity to redemption via their path. And all of them strongly criticizing prevailing (then) catholic traditions ... most notably, the filipino's devotion to the Lady. The song that they sang was that we have replaced Jesus with Mary as the center of our devotion and they played this tune over and over to devastating effect. Their respective memberships grew and our Lady lost people who loved her though I like to think , it was only my Lady who lost, for I believe she still loved them, those who have turned away from her. My love for her remains strong. And this does not take away anything from my faith in her son , Jesus our brother and Lord. She has been manifesting herself for decades across the world, sending us her messages and her warnings. She never tires. She never hold grudges. She treats us like her children .... the faithless and spoiled brats that we are. Always forgiving .... admonishing .... worrying in much the same way as our biological mothers worry about us. And more .... even. Tirelessly. Unconditionally. Religion is like politics. It's a topic that is much like the proverbial hot potato to talk or write about. And that is why I almost (well.... i give in to my baser instincts occasionally ... hehe) never talk or write about it. Until this image happened along. I will do anything for my Lady. Cheers ! "What is it?" I know I shouldn't eavesdrop, but last night I got up for a drink of water in the middle of the night and it was so quiet in the house that I couldn't help but overhear the Danbo brothers whispering to each other: "What is it?", asked Little Danbo. "I don't know", repliied Big Danbo. "Do you think we can eat it?" asked Little Danbo. "I don't know...", answered Big Danbo. I have no idea when those two sleep. I think they explore all night long. I peeked into the kitchen and wanted to tell them it was a Werther's caramel candy, but I didn't want to wake myself up, so I just stumbled back into bed. When I awoke up this morning, I found the empty gold wrapper, so I guess they figured it out. What were we thinking. This pic was taken i the early 1990's on a trip to the isle of Man to see the TT, We were lucky enough to stay at Mike's mums place in Peel and I'm sure we were there for nearly three weeks. My Renault Traffic is parked behind, this was used to bring the bikes to the island however on the return home it gave up the ghost on the motorway, then my bike also broke down funny after all the miles we had done on the island, Mike's FZR400 on the left my FZR 600 in the centre and Nigel's RGV on the right.
