Markus Stainer violin (1680): Neck Reshape (Before)

This violin was once owned by Nashville fiddler Buddy Spicher, and I am told was used by Mark O'Connor on a couple of recordings. It's a great sounding violin.

A neck graft had previously be performed on this 1680 Markus Stainer violin by another repairman hired by the current owner. However, the owner was unhappy with the neck shape which was clubby and difficult to play in upper positions. Additionally, the varnish on the new neck was a poor match to the original. I shaped the neck and retouched the varnish for a better blend with the original wood.

The pencil line shows the new center line of the crest of the neck, slightly off center to accommodate the assymmetric crook of the hand between the thumb and index finger.

Psychedelic Haight Street Mural; Joplin, Hendrix, Garcia

Psychedelic Haight Street Mural; Joplin, Hendrix, Garcia

The Psychedelic Sounds of San Francisco (by Dave Gardner):

The late sixties was surely a peak in the short history of Vintage Rock. Perhaps there was no better location to spring forth the exuberant sounds that flowed out of the city by the bay. Bands like Tikis, Mojo Men, The Knight Riders and the Beau Brummels were beginning to create a different vibe throughout the music industry. Though they had little impact on the mainstream, the local musicians quickly picked up on the free form styles, and soon adopted the attitude of "anything goes..."

In 1966, San Francisco was boiling over with talented artists of all varieties. Pantomime and theater groups infiltrated the streets while the musicians, of one form or another, joined in. Spearheading the revolution, The Great Society, featuring Grace Slick, would unleash two of the scene's most important tunes. Some say "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" more or less opened the door to psychedelia.

It all developed from a simple gig. Paul Kantner put together the Jefferson Airplane with Marty Balin. One night the Airplane and The Great Society were playing at Balin's club, the Matrix. Grace Slick naturally fell with the Airplane, and she brought her material with her. Months later, RCA released "Surrealistic Pillow," and exposed the world to "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit." Suddenly, all eyes were on San Francisco.

The Airplane had some great friends too. Among them: Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, who, in turn, had lots of other friends. There was a scene brewing unlike anything before or since. Much of this had to do with large quantities of LSD being produced by Owsley Stanley, a local chemist and sound guru. Bands like Moby Grape and Blue Cheer were kicking in with lots of strange, experimental sounds. It's a Beautiful Day released "White Bird," a solemn ballad that drew attention to the city. By the time the Summer of Love rolled around in 1967, just about any Bay Area outfit had a recording contract.

But perhaps it was Janis Joplin with her band Big Brother & The Holding Company that really captured the heart and soul of what San Francisco was all about. Joplin's unique voice was an instrument in itself, and she quickly gained national prominence because of it. The album, "Cheap Thrills," recorded live at Bill Graham's infamous Fillmore West, remains a true classic of the era.

When the Monterey Pop Festival came in 1967, Janis and The Grateful Dead more or less represented San Francisco. Both encouraged several jams sessions that took place with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, The Mamas and Papas, and Brian Jones. The Grateful Dead were, of course, at their most experimental stage, releasing wild albums of psychedelic music like "Anthem of The Sun" and "Aoxomoxoa."

Still, more and more talent emerged. A young Carlos Santana came in from the shadows of the local scene. Santana was given a break by Bill Graham, and eventually unleashed his universal guitar stylings with Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman" and "Evil Ways." Other bands like Cold Blood and Country Joe and The Fish were also contributing with their own brand of unusual and experimental musings. The Fish were an especially talented bunch who would gain notoriety at Woodstock for their anti-war rants.

Some of the musicians started dabbling with acoustic guitars. David Crosby drifted up from L.A. and invoked his influence on a lot of San Francisco musicians. His harmonies and soft acoustic guitar are splattered over several records from the era. His own solo album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name," is like a who's who of San Francisco musicians.

By 1969, the amount of music coming out of San Francisco was mind boggling. The Dead continued on their experimental route, taking it to the people. Much of their live material was released, making way for "Dark Star and "St. Stephen" to become the classics of years later. The Airplane came out with "Crown of Creation" and "Volunteers," taking their music to new heights.

Out of some of the live jams, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band with Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield started meshing with a lot of other players. They were often called in to sit in for absent band members. Many bands actually started to go through lots of personnel changes. Moby Grape was one band who went through several incarnations. Other players split to start new bands of their own.

The New Riders of the Purple Sage was a revolving door for players. But they also had a lot of strong support. With Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar and Phil Lesh producing, their first album received an instant stamp of approval. Their country flavor gained them the label of the Day Glo Cowboys.

Side projects made way for solo albums. Country Joe did a solo record. Bob Weir even released a solo album, fully s

Producer(s) Turiya Alice Coltrane, Devadip Carlos Santana, Tom Coster
C-cassette MC 1974 40-69063, (LP: Columbia PC 32900)

Illuminations a collaboration with Alice Coltrane. The album delved into avant-garde esoteric free jazz, Eastern Indian and classical influences with other ex-Miles Davis sidemen Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland.

Strongly indian influenced music. Sri Cinmoy chants OM in the beginning.
Mystical eastern sounds with Santana's guitar solos.
Alice Coltrane plays harp & a fantastic organ solo in Angel of Sunlight.. Nearly synth -like effect before synths. Great unknown soprano sax, (Shorter?) - Unknown flute

It must have been sometimes in late 70's when I found this C-cassette In a sale-basket of some record store. The quality of the cassette is quite bad, but the music much better. This is illumination - anyhow.
Deep meditative moods and furious breaks of the mystical band,
the guitar the most prominent, but the unknown soprano sax (probably Wayne Shorter?) plays very well. I saw Shorter & Santana together in Pori Jazz Festival a decade ago...

Pistoletto, Michelangelo (1933- ) - 1971 The Mandolin (Christie's Paris, 2006)

Silkscreen on mirror; 70 x 100 cm.

Michelangelo Pistoletto is an Italian painter, action and object artist, and art theorist. Pistoletto is acknowledged as one of the main representatives of the Italian Arte Povera. His work mainly deals with the subject matter of reflection and the unification of art and everyday life in terms of a Gesamtkunstwerk.

From 1947 until 1958, Pistoletto worked in his father’s restoration workshop in Turin. In the 1950s, he started painting figurative works and self-portraits. In 1959, he participated in the Biennale di San Marino. In the following year, he had his first solo exhibition in the Galleria Galatea in Turin. In the beginning of the 1960s, Pistoletto started painting figurative works and self-portraits which he painted on a monochrome, metallic background. Later on, he combined painting with photography using collage techniques on reflective backgrounds. In doing so, he sometimes used concave or convex distorting mirrors, which made the observer appear too large or too small in comparison with the realistic-looking painted figures. Eventually, he switched over to printing photorealistic scenes on steel plates polished to a high finish. He did that using the screen-printing method which made the observer almost completely melt in with what was depicted. In the mid-1960s, gallery owner Ileana Sonnabend brought him into contact with an international audience.

In 1965/1966, he produced the series of works Oggetti in meno (Minus Objects), which belongs to Pistoletto’s early sculptural works. In 1966, Pistoletto had his first solo exhibition in the USA, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. In 1967, his work was awarded first prize in the Biennale de Sao Paolo. In the same year, Pistoletto started focusing on performance, video art and theatre. He founded an action art group, called "Zoo Group", which gave several performances between 1968 and 1970. These took place in the studio, public buildings or on the streets of Turin or other large cities. As was already the case with Pistoletto’s 2-dimensional and sculptural works, the aim was to display the unity of art and everyday life.

19:03:09 Little Hands & Broken Bows

Day 19: This is my violin i dug out of the closet.. it was my first violin. I got it for Christmas in 1996- I was in Grade 1.

I still remember the last time I played it, actually. I was practising while no one was around in our family room. I was getting aggrevated- the song I was playing must have been a real bastard to play. I ended up throwing my bow across the room. My bow broke. I cried. I lied to my parents and told them I was playing too hard and it fell and broke. Yeah right. I think I had issues as a child.. Anyways, I was beginning to grow out of it, so instead of just getting a new bow, I got a new violin.

I also remember having difficulty getting my fingers far enough down the neck to hit certain notes. It's so weird since my fingers are longer than that whole part of the neck now!

Portrait.Ktwang.6-24-08

I used to crown my earliest Ktwangs with a little grinning creature head made of sculpey, with a strip of fun fur for a Mohawk. I'm starting construction of a new 'baby ktwang', a kid-sized model using a quart paint can and an E string, very high and sweet. When we made Ktwangs at Luther Burbank Middle School we used big lima bean cans from the cafeteria. I'll make two for kid duets; perhaps the sweetness of form and cuteness of player will somehow get past the fact that playing Ktwang duets is like herding cats. Seriously atonal.

Daily Shoot 58: "Someone once said 'Music is what feelings sound like.' Make a photo of something musical to illustrate the quote today."

I learned a lot setting up my photo for the silhouette assignment the other day, so I thought I'd try it again today. This is a little shaker that my kids use to make noise music. The metal disks are dented and bent from years of abuse. Just looking at this makes me smile thinking of their energy and excitement as they dance around having fun.

Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus, Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz musician, composer, bandleader, and human rights activist.
Charles Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona. He was raised largely in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California. His mother's paternal heritage was Chinese and English, while historical records indicate that his father was the illegitimate offspring of a black farmhand and his Swedish employer's white granddaughter,

His mother allowed only church-related music in their home, but Mingus developed an early love for jazz, especially the music of Duke Ellington. He studied trombone and later cello. Much of the cello technique he learned was applicable to double bass when he took up the instrument in high school. He studied five years with H. Rheinshagen, principal bassist of the New York Philharmonic, and compositional techniques with Lloyd Reese,

In addition to his musical and intellectual proliferation, Mingus goes into great detail about his perhaps overstated sexual exploits. He claims to have had over 31 affairs over the course of his life (including 26 prostitutes in one sitting). This does not include any of his five wives (he claims to have been married to two of them simultaneously). In addition, he asserts that he held a brief career as a pimp. This has never been confirmed.

Mingus's autobiography also serves as an insight into his psyche, as well as his attitudes about race and society.[Autobiographic accounts of abuse at the hands of his father from an early age, being bullied as a child, his removal from a white musician's union, and grappling with disapproval while married to white women and other examples of the hardship and prejudice

As respected as Mingus was for his musical talents, he was sometimes feared for his occasional violent onstage temper, which was at times directed at members of his band, and other times aimed at the audience. He was physically large, prone to obesity (especially in his later years), and was by all accounts often intimidating and frightening when expressing anger or displeasure. Mingus was prone to clinical depression. He tended to have brief periods of extreme creative activity, intermixed with fairly long periods of greatly decreased output.

When confronted with a nightclub audience talking and clinking ice in their glasses while he performed, Mingus stopped his band and loudly chastised the audience, stating "Isaac Stern doesn't have to put up with this sh& amp;He once played a prank on a similar group of nightclub chatterers by silencing his band for several seconds, allowing the loud audience members to be clearly heard, then continuing as the rest of the audience snickered at the oblivious ,

Guitarist and singer Jackie Paris was a first-hand witness to Mingus's irascibility. Paris recalls his time in the Jazz Workshop: ;He chased everybody off the stand except [drummer] Paul Motian and me... The three of us just wailed on the blues for about an hour and a half before he called the other cats back
On October 12, 1962, Mingus punched Jimmy Knepper in the mouth while the two men were working together at Mingus's apartment on a score for his upcoming concert at New York Town Hall and Knepper refused to take on more work. The blow from Mingus broke off a crowned tooth and its underlying stub,According to Knepper, this ruined his embouchure and resulted in the permanent loss of the top octave of his range on the trombone - a significant handicap for any professional trombonist. This attack temporarily ended their working relationship and Knepper was unable to perform at the concert. Charged with assault, Mingus appeared in court in January, 1963 and was given a suspended sentence. Knepper would again work with Mingus in 1977 and played extensively with the Mingus Dynasty, formed after Mingus' death in 1979.
Mingus was evicted from his apartment at 5 Great Jones Street in New York City for nonpayment of rent, captured in the film ;Mingus: 1968 by Thomas Reichman, which also features Mingus performing in clubs and, in the apartment, shooting a shotgun, composing at the piano, and discussing love, art, and politics and the music school he had hoped to create,By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, popularly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a wastage of the musculature. His once formidable bass technique suffered, until he could no longer play the instrument. He continued composing, however, and supervised a number of recordings before his death.

The Smalls Lighthouse

The Smalls Lighthouse

Reproduced from a stamp designed by Dick Davis, illustrated by John Boon and issued by Royal Mail on 24 March 1998

For over 200 years the Smalls Lighthouse has been acting as a guide and hazard warning to passing ships. John Phillips, a Welshman, first conceived the idea of setting a lighthouse on the Smalls, one of two tiny clusters of rocks lying close together in the Irish Sea, 21 miles off St. David's Head in Wales, the highest peak of which projects only 3.5 metres above the highest tides. He advertised for designs and chose one submitted by Henry Whiteside, a musical instrument maker from Liverpool. Whiteside had designed an octagonal house or hut of timber, 4.5 metres in diameter, perched on nine legs or pillars, five of wood and three of cast iron, spaced around central timber post. During the Winter 1775-1776, Whiteside erected the whole structure temporarily at Solva, a small Welsh Haven over 25 miles from the Smalls. In the Spring of 1776, and thanks to the preliminary assembly during which the parts were carefully fitted together, work proceeded so well that by September the oil lamps were lit.

Drastic repairs and alterations became necessary after the storms of December 1777, but Phillips had no funds to carry them out. He discharged the keepers and extinguished the light and made over his interest to a Committee of Liverpool Traders. They induced Trinity House to obtain an Act of Parliament in 1778 which authorised the Brethren to repair, rebuild and maintain the lighthouse and to collect and levy reasonable dues. In view of Phillips' services and his financial losses, they granted him a lease on 3rd June, 1778 for 99 years at a rent of ?5.

Authoritative accounts of this lighthouse bear witness to a tragic episode which appears to have occurred before 1801. Apparently one of the two keepers on the station died and the survivor, fearing that he might be suspected of murder if he committed the body to the deep, put it into a box which he made from the interior woodwork of the house and lashed it to the lantern rail. Passing ships noted this strange object but raised no alarm before the usual relief boat arrived to succour the unhappy survivor. After this episode three keepers were appointed to the lighthouse.

Although the lighthouse was described in 1801 as a "raft of timber rudely put together" it survived for 80 years. Whiteside's design of raising a super-structure on piles so that the sea could pass through them with "but little obstruction" has been adopted since for hundreds of sea structures.
The present lighthouse was built under the supervision of Trinity House Chief Engineer, James Douglass. Its design was based on Smeaton’s Eddystone tower and it took just two years to build being completed in 1861.

In 1978 a helideck was erected above the lantern and the lighthouse was automated in 1987.
In June 1997 the red and white stripes that had distinguished the tower were no longer considered necessary for navigation and the tower was grit blasted back to natural granite.

The mechanism for the automatic octave key switch on this saxophone is interesting. The bigger saxophone gave enough room to design an efficient, easy to adjust mechanism.
