Violin was the first album released by violinst Vanessa-Mae. It was recorded in October 1990, near her 12th birthday, and released shortly afterwards in March 1991. Vanessa-Mae contributed her royalties from the album to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Markus Stainer violin (1680): Neck Reshape (Before)
This violin was once owned by Nashville fiddler Buddy Spicher, and I am told was used by Mark O'Connor on a couple of recordings. It's a great sounding violin.
A neck graft had previously be performed on this 1680 Markus Stainer violin by another repairman hired by the current owner. However, the owner was unhappy with the neck shape which was clubby and difficult to play in upper positions. Additionally, the varnish on the new neck was a poor match to the original. I shaped the neck and retouched the varnish for a better blend with the original wood.
The pencil line shows the new center line of the crest of the neck, slightly off center to accommodate the assymmetric crook of the hand between the thumb and index finger.
