Kung noong nakaraan ay maliksi at listo na siya habang ginagawa ang kanyang warm-up routine sa starting gate, ngayon ay parang malutong kada buto at mahigpit lahat ng kasukasuan. Malalim nguni't kalmado ang kanyang pagtuon ng atensyon sa kada sipa sa pedal.

Sa kanyang kanan, gumising na ang haring araw at sumilip na nang bahagya ang mga mata nito sa ibabaw ng Cordillera. May hamog pang nakabitin sa tila walang katapusang palayan sa paligid; sa kada paghila ng hinga ay may kasamang amoy ng nasusunog na dayami ang hangin. Sa gilid ng daan ay may ilang tao na ring nagwawalis ng bakuran o nag-iigib na tubig. Tumitigil ang mga ito ng panandalian sa kanilang gawain para tingnan kung anong kaguluhan ang nagaganap. Nang makita ang isang pamilyang nakadungaw sa bintana ng kanilang bahay, biglang naisip ni Reynante ang kanyang mag-anak.

Binata pa siya ng magsimulang mawili sa pagbibiskleta at ito ay hindi nahinto kahit pa ng magpakasal sila ni Linda at dumating na ang kanyang panganay na si Donna. Noong mag-isang taon ang anak, nag-pasya si Reynante na itigil muna ang pagbibiskleta dahil nakaramdam siya ng pagod sa paghati ng panahon sa anak, asawa, at sa kanyang malambing na tinatawag na bisyo. Pero hindi nagtagal sa bodega ang kanyang bisikleta.

Umalis siya sa kanyang trabaho sa pabrika ng plastik at naipasok ng tiyuhin ni Linda bilang security guard sa isang department store sa Makati. Upang makatipid sa pamasahe ay naisip niyang magbisikleta na lang papunta sa trabaho at pabalik sa bahay. Valenzuela pa-Makati, Makati pa-Valenzuela. Anim na araw kada linggo.

Sa trabaho ay nakilala niya si Fred, na lider ng isang cycling club ng mga security guard ng mga building malapit sa kanilang pinapasukan. 'Di nagtagal ay naging kasapi si Reynante ng club at sa mas maikling panahon ay kasali na ulit sa mga karera. Mabait at maunawain si Linda at mabuting ama at asawa naman si Reynante kaya't maigi naman ang naging takbo ng mga bagay-bagay.

Mataas-taas na rin ang araw at nawala na ang lamig na bumalot sa mga siklista noong mga unang bahagi ng biyahe. Ang medyo kulay abo na itsura ng kapaligiran ay pinalitan na ng bahagyang nakasisilaw na dilaw. Ang amoy ng dayami ay unti-unti na ring naging amoy ng panggatong—habang ang lahat ay abala sa paghanda ng almusal. Mas marami na rin ang mga taong nagmamanman sa kanila; pati ang ibang mga magsasaka'y pansamantalang umahon sa palayan upang manood.

Old man on a bench

I captured this one today when I walked into a small village all by myself. I immediately got a lot of attention, but people were friendly, they smiled and waved. I walked along a water canal, and just between the canal and the houses were a giant tree with three benches forming a horse shoe. There was a man smoking a waterpipe, a couple of people standing, and this old man sitting at the end of a bench, holding his walking stick. I immediately wanted to photograph him, because he looked like a man you would see in the Times and National Geographic, but I didn't dare ask because it might have been rude to go directly for the oldest one. But somehow everyone around me knew what I wanted, and before I knew it they were pointing at the old man, and led me to him and said "sora, sora" which meant I should photograph him. I asked him kindly in arabic if I could take his picture, and a smiled and said yes. I took two shots, this is the second one. After I showed the photo they invited me for tea and biscuits. I sat there for a period of time chatting in poor arabic, partly english before I was served the tea.

And I must say, that was the best tea I've ever had!

Story: Apparently 2 beat down old bikes were about to be thrown out at the local dump when a T.H.C. volunteer spotted them and rescued them from a certain rusty death. And instead, they were BOTH transformed into the "Shitbikes"! The rules basically went, if there is a shitbike to ride (conveniently leaned up against the, ahem, bathrooms) and you ride it for a lap instead of your own bike, it counts as TWO laps.

Well, by the grace of the gods of dirt, our team had wonderful luck procuring a shitbike for not one, but NINE laps! I can proudly say that 5 out of Bruce Spicer's 7 laps for the day were spent on the bike in this photo; zero suspension front or rear, crappy cantilever brakes (rear pads actually dove below the rim), sketchy bear-trap pedals, steel rims, thumb-shifters and oh yes, a kickstand AND a cable-lock for safety!

Helping sell for a friend. The bike measures 53cm c to t/52cm c to c seat tube and 54cm c to c top tube.
One pic shows a little scratching on the rear break. The rest is dirt. Comes with Mavic MA40 clincher rims and the Michelin race 25mm tires that are on it, however the saddle is not included. The frame is just about
perfect, no dings, dents etc. Chrome is perfect. The bike is approximately 1988, imported by Excel Sports, and sports a 7spd Dura Ace group in fabulous shape. He's asking $900.

These 4 bottles are from various periods in Australian history.
Blue - This is a Castor Oil bottle, circa 1880s
Black - Noted for its black glass, this bottle is from circa. 1860s
Amber - Bonnington's Irish Cough Mixture. I found this in Jesmond park, whilst mountain biking.
Clear - Not exactly sure what this bottle was used for, but has "Property of H. M. Leggo" embossed on the side. Henry died in 1938. By the early 1900s the company was one of Victoria's foremost and manufacturing concerns. Leggo closed his coffee business to concentrate on the manufacture of a range of products including condiments, preserves and canned foods.

..........judging by her “laugh lines”!! Who knew horses got laugh lines on their faces!!?

taken over the weekend at the twins 5th birthday party.....at Highview Farm, in Budd Lake, NJ. The (18) 4 to 7 year olds had a ball, playing and feeding the animals, taking a ride on the horse, and IN a Monster Truck, all around the farm! They had pizza and cupcakes and got goodie bags as part of the deal...
My twin nephews are different as night and day.....one adored riding the horse and being with all the animals, the other was totally smitten with the Monster Truck ride! It is so much fun watching them grow....they were born almost 12 weeks early and one weighed 2+ pounds, the other 3 pounds! you would never know it now! They are all boy, and give their mom fits daily with all the things they do or try to do. They race dirt bikes with their dad on weekends!! Thankfully, their mom, Julie had a baby girl in early june.......she was severely outnumbered and desperately needed an some more female hormones in the house!! ;)

So yeah, another self-portrait…
I wasn’t even planning on posting this one, but the sunset was pretty lame that day. This turned out so intense I just had to give it a ridiculous title. That song is called Don’t Trust Me by 30H!3, btw.

The Tri-Cities really comes alive at night. I was coming home from shooting some photos and was tired from pushing my bike up a hill. Yeah, I was too tired to just ride up it. getting the bike boxes back to Aubreys house so I could finally pack up my bike stuff and go home after 2 months of cycling across the country, going to UBI, and hanging out in S.F. for 2 weeks, I spent all my money building up my UBI bike so I ended up having to sell much of the stuff on my touring bike to get home...gotta have a chris king headset!

what I did on Sunday

This pretty much sums up the bulk of the day: gravel country roads, rolling hills and wind, corn and beans, intermittent light cloud cover.

The club ride started at Vredenburg park in Springfield and went to: Apple Barn in Chatham, Virden, Girard, Palmyra, Scottsville, Franklin, and Loami. 110 miles. Only 1 hill walked. ;)

The headwinds on the way back from Palmyra through Scottsville and Franklin sucked, especially solo, but I managed to complete one of my fastest average ride times.

DONE!

Finally got my wheelset in and a bunch of other parts i needed to finish it up. Reassembled it all and got to ride it a little today for the first time!

DAY 3 and 4?

Amsterdam is all about not knowing what time it is and not caring. Today (Monday) I woke up late (surprise surprise!) and so I decided that renting a bike would not only make me feel like a local, which ironically is what I strive for everywhere I go. When you speak English, the Europeans just cough you up to being a little less than intelligent so looking and feeling like one of them is the closest thing to being treated as an equal, but it would help me catch up on the 3 hours I had missed out on due to late rise. Before anything I had breaky at my hotel finishing it off with an espresso. FYI- there will be no more Tim's for me when I get back to Toronto, no matter where I order an espresso it is always a mean one just the way I like it, and believe me I know, I have about 5-6 a day.

After a quick once-over of my outfit I crossed the street to the bike rental. There was a line-up of Spanish students so what did I do? Of course!!! I had an espresso (I'm an addict) and a yummy pastry from Renee's Patisserie, highly recommended, inexpensive and absolutely heavenly no matter what you order. You can ask any of the stoners that hang out there from dawn to dusk... they'll say the same.

From there I went back to my hotel for outfit change number two, it was far too cold out to look nice so I packed on the layers and hit the street AGAIN. Once on the bike I realized how I underestimated myself! I was a seasoned cyclist after all and whizzed my way through the canals, all the way to the Artist Zoo, got lost, found myself at Anne Frank's Huis (you should've seen the line-up!), peddled over to Rembrant's crib and got lost again so far East of Central that I was huffing and puffing trying to catch my breath! Quick bakery stop for a bite... one salami, three cheese and pineapple panini along with a Fanta to wash it down (trust me, it was divine) I found my way back!!! Length of journey- Four hours. Two broken derriere bones (I actually have bruises) and various aches and pains I was back at the hotel warming up. I had accomplished what most tourists dread, riding a bike in the crazy car/pedestrian/cyclist streets of the Amstel river and the Dams that connect them. I also managed to lock my bike up the right way (I have photos) and didn't collide into anyone or anything. The funniest part of the day? I was giving Portuguese, German and Danish people direction! Hahaha!

On a serious note- What I've realised today is how much at peace one is here. The residents have less wrinkles and are happy people by nature. They take a minute to take a load off, they're out in the fresh outdoor air, they exercise and are generally healthy. I haven't seen or heard one person with a cold or an allergy. Not to say they don't get colds, because I'm sure they do, however their attitude is completely different from ours. These people are thankful for what they have, they're not consumed with what's the newest, coolest, biggest in trends or self-fulfillment through material possessions. It's a nice change. Now, do I get irritated when I'm waiting for the store clerk to ring me up? Absolutely! We have this "I got places to be, time is money" outlook and people here don't pay it any attention. Keeps one in check about not being the centre of the universe.

I finished the day off with some window shopping (everything closed at 6) and Chinese food (there's ethnic cuisine on every street) I actually don't know what the Dutch eat besides cheese that is there own. Oh! I also bumped into one of the couples, the honeymooners from Phoenix, from my Zaandam, Volendam and Edam tour, well technically I almost rode into them because it was my first 10 mins on the bike.

Tomorrow I have an early train to Paris, I want to get to the station to send post cards out and exchange more cha ching. Tot ziens Amsterdam!

DAY 1- I Arrived

Amsterdam! After one delay to another I am finally here! I just wanted you all to know that I am well and made it safely.

Emily- this is the heaviest backpack ever... 20 kilos I may add... but looking at the cobblestone I see you were right and "rolling" my way through Europe would've been impossible! I've already made some friends too!

Here's my entry for first impressions of Amsterdam en route to hotel in Dam Square from Amsterdam Centraal. My friends are from oregon and I met them on the connecting flight from frankfurt to amsterdam... They're way older than me and have friends here so I swamped cards with them when I got here but they went off on their own and that's the end of our friendship for now. I just got to the hotel and I'm a little culture shocked, I guess. There's a lot of really stoned people here and they actually seem intimidating. They just stand around high as kites and look at you weird and ask you if you want to go to bed with them. From what I can tell you can walk everywhere. Renting a bike is something I wanted to do but there's like thousands of people, cars and the bikes just weave throughout all of it and race everyone and everything on the road. Three things I hope to accomplish is: see the windmills, tulips, anne frank's house, van gogh's gallery and one more place I can't remember. My hotel has an italian restaurant below it so I'll either be smelling pizza for the next three days or I'll smell like pizza! The word backpack stand for the word bitch, it's heavy, uncomfortable and makes your posture worse than ever and really, what was I thinking? I look like a lepricon with green fuzz al over me from the airplane blanket I brought and didn't have time to wash to get rid of the extra fuzz/lint that is now on my pants, sweater and the rest of my "person" as the flight attendants say. Anyhow, that's my first impression. I think everyone here is a tourist too and I've heard a mixture of languages just in the first few minutes of being here. I'm tired as hell but I have to keep going!!! Going to shower and change and get out there in this pro-cannibis city.
