Fixed Gear bike
This guy claimed to be the only bicycle messenger in the city of Indianapolis. I can tell you I believe him. I didn't see any other riders who looked like messengers. This bike is like a track bike. Not only is it one speed but it will not coast. When the wheels are turning the peddles are turning - always! Notice there are no brakes either! You slow to a stop by putting backwards pressure on the peddles. Fixed gear bikes are gaining a greater following among certain, self proclaimed, "hard-core" bike riders. Over 500 miles to Idaho by Bike. Sept - Oct 2007

A Bike tour From Portland (Troutdale) to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Eleven days of riding 530 miles (plus 40 miles of hitching). The return was made on the Empire Builder Amtrak train at Sandpoint, ID.
For the tour Matt and Carye bought new custom built Bike Friday (www.bikefriday.com) folding bikes that are made in Eugene, Oregon. Neither Carye or Matt own cars, so investing in a reliable, flexible bike for travel was important. However the bikes arrived two days before leaving, so getting used to new bikes while on the road, was literally a pain in the butt! By the end of the trip, gears, seat and handle bar placement, and proper riding shoes were figured out. Everyday of the ride had awesome weather (not too hot, not rainy), and Carye and Matt met many friendly people, ate as much pizza and icecream as desired, and enjoyed some beautiful scenery (though Washington wheat fields get dull to the eyes after 20 miles). The fourth day brought bad luck - 4 flats (at once!) caused by Goathead thorns, and wind in the face most the day. Also a family of earwigs hitched a ride in C & M's camping gear, and it took about a week to finally see the last one. Idaho is a cyclist paradise (what a secret). From The State Border near Coere D'Alene to just before Bonner's Ferry, there were many bike paths, nice scenery, and most flat routes.
Day 1:Troutdale to Hood River (55.6 miles)
Highlights: Gorgeous Columbia River (Get the bike map from ODOT). Ride to Council Crest, Ride by Falls, bike-ped paths on the old historic highway.
The campground listed on the bike map for Hood River was not there. We decided to treat ourselves and stayed at the Hood River downtown hotel. Hood River is a super nice town - though sad the Carousel Art Museum is closed and moving elsewhere. Also on this route, between Cascade Locks and Wyeth, do not take the Wyeth Bench Rd (aka Herman Creek Rd), it is a horrible grade hill, and you are better off taking the I-84. Note about I-84, it's not the most pleasant experience, but it's not bad, In order to bike to Hood River, you will need to get on I-84 at several points - The shoulder is pretty wide at most places, and it's a good idea to wear some bright orange!
Day 2: Hood River to Maryhill, WA (52.5 miles)
Highlights: The old historic highway section is really neat: it goes through the Mosier Tunnels (now just for ped/bike), The section through Mosier town, and to Rowena's Crest was on low traffic streets. No need to get on I-84 at all all the way to the Dalles.
The crossing over to Washington on the bridge in the Dalles was difficult. It was so windy and the sidewalk so narrow we had to walk. Biking to hwy 14 across the wind was also difficult. But once on hwy 14 heading East, the wind was at our bikes, and we cruised past the Maryhill Museum (Too late in the day to stop!) and stayed at the Maryhill State Park (back down by the river).
Day 3: Maryhill to Crow Butte (58.2 miles)
Highlights: Cruising sometimes 20 miles an hour easily with the wind at our back on Hwy 14. Lovely more deserty scenery, waving to trains. A Stop at Stonehenge.
From the campground, we hitched a ride in a pickup back up the top of the hill to hwy 14. The road was a major truck route, and the shoulder was pretty much missing for the first section of the hill, we decided htiching was the safest option. We enjoyed stopping at America's Stonehenge. I had been there before, but never thought I'd bike all the way! Crow Butte park was father than we thought. We could see it, but then had to ride about 4 miles all the way around and out to it. The RV park was expensive, and did not offer "primitive camper" sites.
Day 4: Crow Butte, WA to Hat Rock Park, OR
Highlights: Early morning hike past deer to the top of Crow Butte. Discovering the way over the I-82 - there is a bike route, but you need to go on the may freeway before the bike route appears, then you exit, cross under and go over on the otherside. Umatilla was nice little town to check out. At first we were excited about the Lewis & Clark Bike/Ped Bath, but it turned into a bad situation.
The wind in the gorge changed from E to W today, so we had to push hard for 20 miles, going about 5-8 miles an hour. Very hard reality after the day before. The road moved away from the Gorge and was now less interesting. Onion (Walla Walla) trucks passed us all day, leaving onion skin trails. We crossed back to Oregon, and instead of the main road decided to follow the Lewis & Clark trail to Hat Rock State Park. Unfortunately it turned into a bad idea. The path was badly marked and kept changing from paved to shared road, to bark-dirt to gravel. After a gravel section we discovered that we had rode through thorns and had 4 flats at once. We pulled out 15-30 thorns and only had two new tubes, One tube needed to be patched 7 times. We were able to ri

History Of The Discovery
At the beginning of the 20th Century Antarctica was still an uncharted wilderness. Exploration was a daunting task, involving a long voyage through remote and tempestuous seas just to reach the continent. The 1901 British National Antarctic Expedition was the vision of Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society. Naturally cautious, Markham saw the aims of the expedition as purely scienti?c. Being the ?rst to reach the South Pole was never one of the objectives. By 1900 Markham had raised the necessary funds, now all he needed was a ship, and a man to lead the expedition.
The Ship
As a major whaling centre Dundee’s shipyards had long experience of constructing ships robust enough to travel through the Arctic pack ice. It was this expertise that Markham harnessed to build RRS Discovery, the ?rst vessel to be constructed speci?cally for scienti?c research. While the design was based on the great Dundee whalers, there were some modi?cations to be made. Magnetic surveys were to be an important part of the scienti?c work of the expedition. To be sure of complete accuracy an exclusion zone round the magnetic observatory was created, with no iron or steel allowed within 30 feet of the area.
Captain Robert Falcon Scott RN
As leader of the expedition Markham wanted “a naval of?cer in the regular line... young and a good sailor with experience of ships under sail. He must have imagination and enthusiasm... be calm, yet quick and decisive in action.” His search ended with a young naval of?cer he had ?rst encountered twelve years earlier, Lieutenant Robert Falcon Scott. Devon born, Scott had joined the navy at thirteen. Following a chance reunion with Markham, Scott applied for the post of expedition leader. He was appointed in June 1900 and promoted to Commander RN at the age of just 33. Though a rather shy man he was also steady, strong and, as later events were to prove, immensely courageous.

NJ - Jersey City - Hamilton Park: Golden Door - Stairs of Separation
Stairs of Separation, Hole #6 at The Golden Door, was designed by Victoria Colabro. Immigrants who entered the U.S. through Ellis Island during the late 19th and early 20th centuries were required to pass hasty medical and legal exams. After this registration process, they descended different aisles of the Stairs of Separation, and were directed to one of three options, depending on their exam result: a railroad ticket office, the Ellis Island hospital, or back to their country of origin. Calabro references this exhausting and emotional journey through models of the Stairs of Separation and an immigrant boat, as well as the footprint of the golf green, which evokes the structure of Ellis Island.
The Golden Door, a mini-golf exhibition at Hamilton Square presented by Jersey City Museum and Liberty National, was open to the public from June 24 through September 6, 2010. In honor of the rich history of Jersey City, ten artists and collaborative artist teams were invited to create golf holes for an outdoor miniature golf course that represented their interpretation of "The Golden Door." Jersey City is known as America's Golden Door because of its proximity to Ellis Island. Curated by Christina Vassallo, each hole combines recreational functionality with a unique participatory art project that focuses on ingenuity, resourcefulness, and play.

Kettler Alu-Rad Mixte
Found this little mixte on Craigslist for $30. Couldn't resist so I brought her home! I don't know too much about this bike. What I DO know is that it was made in W. Germany, is all aluminum (including the fenders, wheels and handlebars). The brakes and derailleur are Shimano, brake levers are Weinmann. The lighting does not work, but I plan to correct that. To get her road worthy, I'll she will need is new tires/tubes and brake pads. I will be putting a Brooks B72 that I already have on her, and replacing the rubber grips with... something else. :)

Inspired by the 1984 Olympic Time Trial Bike My freind Larry Gobble and I cut up an old Schwinn Varsity I had rusting in my garage and I tested my welding skills to come up with this design. I first cut the top tube and seat stays from the seat tube. I bent the top tube up so that I could move the seat tube forward. Larry bought a BMX seat post that was curved and we were able to extend the hight of the seat tube so that I could weld it to the top tube. We may have built the first intergrated seatpost design. I then bent the seat stays until they reached the seat tube. I also cut the steel stem in half and welded it upside down to the crown of the forks. The steel Varsity bars were also cut and turnd up over. The rest of the parts were things Larry had in his garage. Larry road this bike to a 3rd place spot in the eppies Great race. He had the best bike split of the whole race.

So a lady asked for bike parts
on Freecycle for her son.
I responded with 4 frames
maybe a half dozen rims
with tubes and tires
some pedals, chain and a saddle
They were a bit overwhelmed
I guess. I saw this rusting
in the yard and asked
how much they'd want for it
but they gave it to me

Mud Glorious Mud....
If it were the kids getting this dirty they'd have been given a serious telling off... but given it was Daddy and it was a mountain bike race it was all OK !!
The conditions in Swinley Forest for the "Gorrick Enduro" were truly attrociuios, such a difference to the lovely dry trails of just a few days ago. It was a true quagmire. I was entered into the 3 lap (30 mile) race and even after 3/4 of the first lap I was knackered... it was so bad you were having to cycle down hill, the mud was really sapping.
I persevered and started the second lap but 1/2 way around there was just nothing left in the tank and a few guys overtook me. I stopped for 5 mins to get a mars bar inside me and then I was off again and relatively speaking was full of energy, I soon caught and overtook those that had overtaken me.
Coming into the finish area they announced my name over the tannoy as the 2nd person home in the 3 lap category until I apologetically explained I'd only done 2 laps and was binning it.
The conditions wer so bad that out of the 68 people entered for 3 laps only 12 made the full 3, a further 20+ riders pulled out after just one lap so I actually feel pretty good about doing 2 !! Some of the people entered into the 7 lap (70 mile race) were out for over 8 hours.
When I got home I let the kids hose me down in the garden, which they thought was great fun. I though it was cold and had forbidden them to go above the "plimsole line" if you know what I mean. I'm still finding bits of grit in places that shouldn;t have grit near them.
It's taken me about 2 hours to clean and lube my bike today and it's still a bit graunchy and gritty. I went through a set of brake pads yesterday too, despite hardly going fast enough to ever need them !!
Photography wise, this was taken by my 9 year old son and then created as a print to file jpg in Lightroom's print module from 2 seperate shots and reimported to LR then exported to flickr using Jeffrey Friedl's excellent plug in as always.

Main Line Riders return with their second full length recording since their debut in 2007. This time around the band returns with a new attitude, a new vocalist and a new sound. With the electrifying opening notes of It all Ends Tonite you'll think that Bon Scott surely must have been resurrected and is now singing for Cliffy and his Main Line Riders. Unashamedly, Worldshaker is earnestly beholden to hard rock godfathers (Bon-era) AC/DC. The first three cuts, along with Rhythm-N-Blues could easily have been some lost AC/DC tracks! The album has everything classic rock requires. There are songs about rock-n-roll, slow sleazy blues, high-voltage boogie and the MONSTER RIFFS of Cliffy! So big and bold are these riffs that they bruise the listener upon contact! It's those catchy, infectious riffs -- that make your spine tingle and give the music its backbone! Worldshaker definitely delivers some high voltage by a band that steals from all the right places, rocks non-ironically -- even epically at times -- and sounds great blasting out of a car or on headphones!

Bascom Hall
Bascom Hall is Bascom Hall. I had entered the doors of Bascom with reverence and fear... I had taken tonnes of exams here. During my sophomore year, I had overslept on two consecutive days on which I had final exams early in the mornings. I had to ride on my Raleigh road bike as if it were a Cannondale mountain bike on ice and snow while the temperatures with wind chill factor were some 40F below zero. When I eventually sat down in the exam hall, I had to allow myself to defrost for 15 min before I could do anything else. I am very happy to still have my original ears on me.
Hopping Around at the Avalon Park and Ride
This was my first good mountain bike: the 1992 Raleigh Chill. This pic was probably taken in 1993. It was sporting the Manitou 2 shock. The bike also had a Manitou 1 and eventually a Manitou 3 when it was stolen.
