Fixed Gear Bike
A fixed-gear bicycle (or fixed-wheel bicycle, commonly known in the USA as a fixie) is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast — the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving.

Fixed Gear bike
This guy claimed to be the only bicycle messenger in the city of Indianapolis. I can tell you I believe him. I didn't see any other riders who looked like messengers. This bike is like a track bike. Not only is it one speed but it will not coast. When the wheels are turning the peddles are turning - always! Notice there are no brakes either! You slow to a stop by putting backwards pressure on the peddles. Fixed gear bikes are gaining a greater following among certain, self proclaimed, "hard-core" bike riders. A few of them really are hard core. This guy seems pretty hard core, although I would have expected his leg muscles to be bigger. A lot of the fixed bike nuts are in San Francisco, California - go figure.
Fixed Gear Bike
Norman Rockwell captures the glee of an early "Fixie" enthusiast.
50 years later, modern urban fixed gear bike riders tend to be a more serious lot.
