There are many systems for classifying types of motorcycles, describing how the motorcycles are put to use, or the designer's intent, or some combination of the two. Six main categories are widely recognized: cruiser, sport, touring, standard, dual-purpose, and dirt bike.

ALBERTA 1975-84 (1979, EXPIRES MAR 31/80) --- OFF HIGHWAY plate
The Alberta 1975 baseplate, used until 1984 stickered anually now included all offroad vehicles with no separate designation for offroad vehicle types such as quads, trikes, snowmobiles and dirt bikes. The plate had the legend "OFF-HIGHWAY top center and the numbering began at A-00001. This plate "A-00159 was the 159th offroad plate issued during that plates period of use. This plate was stickered for 1979 (Expiring March 1980) with earlier stickers hiding underneath the exp 80 sticker.
