COLLAPSIBLE CANOPIES : CANOPIES
Collapsible Canopies : Glass Pendant Light Shade : Faux Alabaster Lamp Shade Collapsible Canopies
2008 summer vacation, Michigan, Manistee National Forest, Pines Point campground So we're heating the morning water at Pines Point. The mosquitoes here were aggressive and everywhere. The yellow bucket had my sister's mosquito-be-gone device sitting on it. It may or may not have had some minor effect on the bug population. It's difficult to tell. We left the canopy off the tent (sitting behind the tent by the stump) because it was so hot, with the proviso that if it started to rain, the first person to notice had to scramble out and put the canopy on. The blue cylinder sitting on the far end of the table bench is one of my collapsible buckets. I took two with us, and both sprung leaks before the trip was over. So we'd fill them up and leave them off to the side to leak in peace and not get everything wet. 1940s Mother With Pram These prams were still popular until well into the 1970s before collapsible buggies overtook them in popularity. With the rise of the motorcar, prams like this were no longer practical. I remember mum having one like this for my twin sisters (a canopy at each end of the pram). hello, I must be going The weather turned warm so I decided to take a walk to get my shot for today. I didn't get two steps before finding a baby Gopher Tortoise walking between the track of my hurricane shutters and the house. The path he's walking is 2 1/2 inches wide so he's a very tiny newborn. The babies have a very short attention span and I had to wait only a minute before he emerged from his shell. The adults on the other hand will stay tucked away for quite a long while. I always give up before they do and have never gotten a close shot of an adult. Adults have the size and comical appearance of military camouflage helmets roaming the lawn looking for tasty weeds. They are hated by developers due to their protected species status and by lawn perfectionists due to their nature of digging huge tunnel dens. Below is the front view. And below that is an adult at the mouth of his tunnel den. You can see how destructive he may seem if you're trying to have the best lawn in town. Lucky for him we aren't. Taken for our daily challenge - walking Don't use this image on websites, blogs or other media without explicit permission from Laurarama. © All rights reserved Forecast Fail 10/52 The topic for this week was WEATHER. The forecast for today is cloudy with a little to no rain at all. This was a tough one. First, note...there was no actual rain outside, the rain effect was added by using a garden hose. There are no multiple photos combined to get this shot, it is one photo. Second, it was 32F and I had a fan on steroids blowing in my face. Third, the umbrella was brand new and tortured by be to give you the effect of hurricane winds. In all, this was a fun shoot. Special thanks to David Krukovets for getting frostbite with me. Real Self-Portrait: Puppy Love I’m the type of person who likes to read between the lines and discover the implied stories/backgrounds behind pictures and books. I am always interested in finding the main theme to a story or photo so I can relate to it personally so I can develop a connection to it. I have always liked to relate myself to pictures and ever since I got my first camera for Christmas in the eighth grade, I have loved to take them and figure out what my camera is capable of. Now that I am in a digital photography class at school, I have been given the opportunity to discover what types of pictures I like taking the best and what kind of photographer I am. Through my photography class, I have discovered that I loved taking nature photos. I realized that I loved to take photos of things that are simple and composed, but do not have a lot more going on other than the main subject. I like this because I think it makes the photos seem nice and I think it also can give the photo a very dramatic effect. I also like taking natural, simple pictures because I’ve found that I don’t like having to set up photos because I feel that it makes the photos feel less realistic. I like finding subjects where they naturally are and adjust myself and my camera and maybe the lighting to take the best photo. I guess that’s why I like nature pictures, because you only have to change where you stand and your camera settings to get an amazing natural shot with out having to change the setting. I’ve also found that I like to try and show strong emotions or symbolism in my photos because I feel that it gives it a personal touch and is something people can relate to. For my Natural Self-Portrait, I decided to incorporate my dog, Sandy, because she means the world to me. I am also a big dog person and I think the photo clearly shows my love for dogs. I also used the peace scarf to show that I am a nice person and that I don’t like to fight. To set up this photo I sat next to my dog and tried to make her look at me, which was difficult. But after a while, I got this photo and I knew that it was the right one because it clearly shows the natural me. This ties into my philosophy because it is a very natural shot and it’s symbolic of who I am as a person. Even if it’s not as simple as I usually like my photos to be, the black and white make it look simpler and more natural and I think it turned out really great. For my Alter Ego Self-Portrait, I chose to make myself dark and mysterious. The photo is of me looking through the blinds on a window while the room behind me is dark. This photo started as me playing around with the light coming through the blinds on my face but then I decided to place the camera behind the blinds and peak through them, and it gave it a much more dramatic and dark effect. This photo fits into my philosophy because it is simple, as in it’s only of my eyes looking through the blinds, but it’s also really symbolic because it show being hidden and being mysterious and makes the viewer wonder who that person is and why they are so dark and hidden. The lighting also makes it seem more symbolic because it is a dark person looking into a bright light. I was also able to edit a little big in Photoshop to make it appear darker then it is and it turned out exactly like I had intended it too. Natural Light, Outdoor, Self-Portrait Back at the self-portraits again... argh... I was supposed to do a senior portrait this morning but it got cancelled. So, I packed-up my stuff and headed out to the backyard... okay, so I only went right outside the door. My goal, natural light portrait in harsh sunlight, control the amount of squinting. Goal achieved? Eh... maybe kind of. My right eyebrow is slightly peaked, and my lower eyelids look a little taught... (I think that's called squinting). Setup on this shot is as follows: - 3x6 Litepanel with black cover above subject to create shade. - 43-inch 5-in-1 Promaster (I think with the white surface) camera-left and about 3 to 4 feet away from subject. - See the siding on the garage in the background... there's a large house with that same siding on it camera-right and about 6 feet from subject... it produces a ton of fill-light. Because of the last bullet point above, I realize that I need to find a different location so I don't have that "crutch" to lean on. I need to see what happens, and how I work with it, when that isn't there. I hadn't done a self-portrait in a while, so I was truthfully looking forward to doing one prior to this... but, I once again realized what a pain they are in regard to focus, framing, and just the general [lack of] spontaneity. It also didn't help that I was trying to do natural light portraits on a day with lots of sporadic cloud-cover (exposure settings are changing constantly... or I had to wait for the clouds to get out of the way). Moonlight Meadow A couple weeks back I went out before 1st light to set up for whitetail deer photos. There was a lull in activity because of this...... bright, clear full moon. As I walked to get into my location I wanted to snap a pic to show the moonlight. 18mm (M) ISO 200, ET 2.5, f3.5., ADL BKT. The photo looks slightly brighter than it was .... but trust me it was very light. Door Detail This is the detail from one of the many "iron shutters" in the town of Columbia. Iron shutters were used as fire protection - installed on buildings constructed of stone or brink, one could protect the contents of the building during a fire by shuttering down the building and waiting the fire out. The vast majority of the old brink and stone buildings in town have these large metal doors. East Leake fire station This is the fire station in East Leake, Nottinghamshire. It is what is known as a 'retained' station - i.e. the firemen are part-time and have other (main) jobs. The fire appliance based here, a Dennis Rapier water ladder, can be seen behind the roller shutter door. Jersey @ the Oct. 25 City Council Meeting Occupier Jersey Deutsch, got up to speak on the topic of Occupy San Diego at the October 25 City Council Meeting. She called a mic check and approximately 50 members of Occupy San Diego delivered the message through a people’s mic. This is what we said: "Mic check. We represent the Occupy San Diego protest. Our protest is protected by our constitutional rights. You took an oath to uphold our constitution. Therefore we request that you respect and uphold our right under the 1st Amendment of our Constitution. Please endorse our peaceful protest action against undue corporate or monetary influence on our government. The Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution supporting the Occupy Los Angeles protest. We want the same respect here and from you. Similar to LA our protest will have tents, canopies, power ad portable restrooms. We will continue to have a medical tent, food, educational materials and media support. We will continue to Occupy Civic Center plaza and expansion park areas. We asked you to place this item on the agenda at the last meeting. You did not, so we ask you again. Here is a copy of the proposed resolution. Please call a special meeting to propose this agenda item immediately. Under the Brown Act you can discuss this and place it on the agenda now. If you do not place it on your agenda we will accept this as consent to our protest, and plan for our constitutional rights. Again if you do not place this on the future agenda at this time we will accept your passive consent to reoccupy the Civic Center Plaza and Children’s Park and your action will be evidence of your support of our constitutional rights." Tracy's favorite creature These cute little frogs are in a tank at the aquarium. That tank is so dark that you don't see them when you walk past it. My friend Helene didn't even know there was anything in the tank until I showed her one of these shots. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Red-eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) is an arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests in Central America. The Red-eyed Tree Frog is a small-sized tree frog, reaching lengths of about 5 - 7 centimeters (3 inches). Its dorsal surface is green of varying shades, and its ventral surface is white. The sides of the frog are purple or blue, with vertical white stripes and orange toes. Young frogs are typically brown in color and turn greener as they mature, although adult frogs can change their color depending on mood and environment.[1] Both females and males have bulging orangy red eyes with vertically narrowed pupils, resembling the eyes of domestic cats. Red-eyed tree frogs have soft, fragile skin on their belly, and the skin on their back is thicker and rougher. Males are generally somewhat smaller than the females. Bright markings along the sides and limbs reduces predation. Most animals that prey on A. callidryas (some bats, snakes, and birds) often rely on their vision. When the frog moves to avoid the predator the bright colorations flash into view (hence their name, flash colors) and throw off the predator. This is achieved by leaving a ghost image in the visual field of where the frog was originally. This confuses the predator and gives the frog time to hide. These flash colors may also deceive predators by making the frog appear poisonous. Red-eyed tree frogs are not poisonous and rely on camouflage to protect them. During the day, they remain motionless, cover their blue sides with their back legs, tuck their bright feet under their belly, and shut their red eyes. Thus, they appear almost completely green, and well hidden among the foliage. Their eyes seem to glow in the dark. Red-eyed tree frogs are mainly carnivores. They prefer crickets, flies, grasshoppers and moths. Sometimes, they will eat smaller frogs. For froglets, fruit flies and pinhead crickets are the meals of choice. During the mating season, when rainfall is at it highest, males of the red-eyed tree frog form choral groups to entice females to small water pools where their eggs are then laid and fertilized by a chosen male. The males do this by climbing onto the backs of the females and rubbing their hind limbs along her rear flanks of the female. The eggs develop into larvae and later into small tadpoles. After full metamorphosis weeks later, the juveniles that survive the first few weeks crawl back into the undergrowth and security of plants in the vicinity of these pools, often in the hollows of tubular plants like bromelias. Red-eyed tree frogs inhabit rainforests from southern Mexico, through Central America, to Northern Colombia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agalychnis_callidryas Center of the Universe My paternal grandparents' home in Kinder, Louisiana, ca. 1972. The land on which this house stood and from which the surrounding farm sprung were purchased during the Great Depression. It originally was the city-dump. What a great bargain. The 'dump' became a 'gilded-age' palace to the next generation of children who found a love of life, learning, wonder, and a Garden of Eden on its acres of fertile ground. On that front porch, behind those louvered windows, a Christmas tree stood decked-out in its colored lights, signalling to a generation of grandchildren that very soon their fondest wishes would be fulfilled. On that back porch, behind those windows on the right, were twenty-years worth of National Geographic Magazines. They never ceased to intrigue your's truly. In the bedroom, behind those windows on the left, many young exhausted grandchildren reluctantly fell asleep on the endlessly squeaking cast-iron bedsteads. None of them could dream what the next morning held in store. On this land we picked grapes from a large vineyard, snatched handfuls of strawberries from our grandmothers patch, or eagerly climbed ladders into huge bushes to pluck blueberries which were to became part of our breakfast, lunch, or dinner feasts. Here we would fish in the sun drenched pond behind the house, or squirm as our doting fathers would dig in the compost heap for earthworms to bait our hooks. Sometimes we could observe bananas growing on the banana trees planted in the backyard or get sick eating too many of the out of season pecans which we little tykes had to leap to reach. I could never acquire a taste for the persimmons which grew at the front corners of the house and thought all they were good for was to squish under your feet as they rotted on the ground. I did, however, acquire a lasting sympathy for "June Bugs" as they met their watery demise in large contraptions my grandfather built to reduce the numbers of their destructive larvae. It is amazing how sheer wonderment can dispell the voracious mosquitoes, tolerate the agonizing, endless itch of red bugs, or 'chiggers', and even ignore the frequent bumps, bruises, and skinned knees. Today, everything in this photograph is gone. No tree or structure still stands. A mere vacant lot. No more fond memories to be made here. This place where so many children feasted on handpicked grapes, blueberries, huckleberries, strawberries, fieldpeas, and caught brim & catfish from the pond is forever gone. The tiny rice-farming town is now awash in luxuries owed to the casinos that have made Kinder, Louisiana (known on highway billboards as 'Coushatta') into a place too busy for the slower paced, more meager pleasures of life.
