Gangale/May 2011 UNHCR programme provides young Somali males with a toolkit full of skills GALKAYO, Somalia, June 30 (UNHCR) – Barely a year ago, life was a constant struggle for survival for 18-year-old Barre Abdirahman in the central Somalia town of Baidoa. Limited employment opportunities, intense fighting and the threat of drought had reduced the local population to poverty and a bleak future. "There was no good life there; it was just full of troubles," Barre told recent visitors in Galkayo, which is located to the north of Baidoa in Somalia's Puntland region. He fled here in search of a better future and has since found hope in a training programme organized by UNHCR and funded by Canada. Barre said that finding work in Baidoa was a desperate business. "You had to know someone who would help you get that job, and afterwards give him some money as a sign of gratitude. My family had little money; my parents each earned three [US] dollars a day from washing and ironing clothes, which was not enough to meet all our basic needs." When the young man headed to Galkayo he left behind his brother, sister and parents. It took five days by bus and cost eight dollars to reach the town. On arrival, he moved in with an aunt, who now lives in the Al Aamin camp for internally displaced people (IDP). His initiative was soon rewarded when he was one of 40 young men selected to take part in the five-month vocational skills training programme. The UN refugee agency and its local partner, the Galkayo Education Centre for Peace and Development, visited IDP camps all over Galkayo to find suitable candidates. Many of them were engaged in low-paying jobs like shoe shining or garbage collection, but lacked the skills to sustain a long-term livelihood. Barre and his classmates learned skills such as welding and carpentry during the course, which wrapped up earlier this month. Each participant has been given basic, essential tools to help them secure work and ultimately set up their own businesses. "The course has changed my life in many ways," Barre said. "I come from a poor background just like the other young men in the camp, but I'm determined to be successful. I dream of owning my own garage where I can practise my welding skills. He added that when he had raised enough money, "I will definitely bring my family here and give them a better life than the one they know now. I am forever grateful for this opportunity." Bruno Geddo, UNHCR's representative for Somalia, hailed the positive impact of the programme. "Skills training is an effective way to empower Somali youth in order to secure a better future for Somalia. These young men, who could otherwise have fallen prey to recruiters or pirates, have now been given a future and are determined to be the force for change their country needs," he said. The programme aims to equip the male participants with readily applicable skills, thereby enabling them to generate income to support themselves and their families. It also provides a social base for advocacy, protection monitoring and mobilization work on a wide range of issues. There are currently almost 140,000 IDPs in Puntland, with 60,000 of them living in 21 settlements in Galkayo. Meanwhile, drought and continuing conflict in south and central Somalia is driving thousands of people to flee to neighbouring Kenya. Chocolate, Chocolate and More Chocolate I clipped the recipe for these "Chewy Chocolate Cookies" from the newspaper long ago and made the cookies, and have been craving them ever since; they were rich and chocolatey and fabulous. Then I lost the recipe for years. I just found it buried in the kitchen junk drawer, and made them again this weekend. They contain 8 oz. of semi-sweet chocolate, 6 oz. of unsweetened chocolate and 12 oz. of bittersweet chocolate chips (plus butter, flour, brown sugar, eggs, baking powder, and salt.). After nibbling a few right out of the overn, the rest of the batch went directly into the freezer, as I can only have one in the evening with my cup of tea after dinner. Any more chocolate and I will be up all night ! Press "L" - then scratch - n - sniff..... Go ahead I dare you to take just one! cooooookies! I had some ingredients left, and decided to make some chocolate chip cookies from scratch. these are also vegan- whee! I modified a base recipe I found and made them a bit more chocolatey. not as chewy as I wanted them, but they're still yummy according to the general consensus. 301 of 365. Kitchen mishap. The recipe said "keep the steaks warm after cooking." So we placed a casserole on top of an extremely low flame, ready for the meat when it came out of the pan. A few minutes later we were greeted with an impossibly loud BANG, and several hundred tiny blocks of blue Pyrex™ scattered around the kitchen. The casserole dish had diced itself from the heat. Our entire kitchen—the floors, countertops, mixing cups—looked a bit like the bottom half-inch of an aquarium, filled with decorative blue glass pellets. (Sorry, no photos of that; we had to clean quickly to avoid spoiling the meal.) This... Ugh. James is such a flippin' slob!! This is so disgusting. and it's grating on my nerves. When I came back about a week after breaking up with James, he had actually cleaned the apartment some (as he admits, in a effort to try to get me back. Futile, really) But then I come home again to THIS! And he wonders why he got dumped!! This is so disgusting. I want to vomit, seriously. I am tempted to clean it just so I can see it clean again, but I am not his damn maid, so no. UGH! Admittedly, the OJ container is mine. But there's no place to throw it because the trash under the sink is OVERFLOWING. Yuck. But Trader Joe's had 3 lbs of baby artichokes for $4, so here we go. Baby artichokes sauted with red onion, garlic and lemon juice. Yum. Day 20: 4/15/11 -- Lamb rib chops with preserved lemon and cured olives; a chick pea, tomato, feta, and mint salad; truffled baby artichokes We had dear friends over for dinner this night. Up until the time I left work, I had little to no idea what to cook. I stopped at Whole Foods on my way home and came up with what you see here. Cemetery Junction Like Clement and Le Frenais or Waterhouse and Hall, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have written a big-hearted movie about working-class lads from the sticks who want to get off with girls and get on with their lives, but feel a gravitational, detumescent pull of loyalty, to each other and to their boring, boring hometown. And they've got a sinking feeling that this sinking feeling is the natural order of things, however big their dreams. Coming down in the world at last, like a punchline to a lugubrious gag, is the way it has to be. It's a film which is at once dated and backdated: the British kitchen-sink genre this superficially resembles conjures up the monochrome image of the late 1950s and early 60s. But Gervais and Merchant have chosen the 70s as their period – just a moment or two later in historical terms, but autobiographically relevant and thanks to its evergreen eligibility for knowing irony and familiarity, the decade seems also comfortably contemporary. And a world of class, and jumping class barriers, offers an obvious narrative structure that a 2010 setting doesn't. There's something else, too. This also looks weirdly like a US coming-of-age movie about three American teens skilfully transplanted to a Brit setting. One of the characters has a trendy looking hat which makes him look as if he lives in Brooklyn. I simply don't believe a supposedly uncool British bloke from Reading would wear this without having it wrenched from his head by his mates and flushed down the toilet, but it's a hat I can believe an uncool Reading bloke would think that Americans would wear but would never dare try himself. The movie starts with a quaintly extravagant "fight" in a pub which looks more like a Hollywood bar brawl. The scene is an district of Reading called Cemetery Junction, and short of it being called Despair Central or Cancer Terminus, it couldn't be more redolent of dead-endness. As the three best mates, Gervais and Merchant have found three striking-looking relative unknowns. Jack Doolan is Snork, the lardy nerd in the implausible hat who works as an announcer for British Rail. Tom Hughes (who played Chaz Jankel in the Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) is Bruce, an angry bloke from a broken home who works in a factory and likes a punch-up. But the shy, aspirational one – traditionally a transformed autobiographical version of the author in this kind of story – is Christian Cooke, as Freddie, the ambitious lad who has got a white-collar job in an insurance company. He looks like Gael Garcia Bernal's more attractive younger brother. Like Rodney Bewes's Bob in The Likely Lads, he's the one who wants to break into the middle classes and, like the hero of Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim, he finds that the girl of his dreams, Julie (Felicity Jones), is engaged to a stuffed-shirt nincompoop who outranks him socially. This is smoothie Mike (Matthew Goode) who wants to suck up to his father-in-law and boss of the insurance firm, Mr Kendrick, played by Ralph Fiennes. With this weaselly role, Fiennes is letting his inner Leonard Rossiter that little bit more out of the closet. Julie's artistic ambitions in photography – like Dawn's dreams of being an illustrator in The Office – are crassly unappreciated by her fiance. Ricky Gervais himself has a small role as Freddie's dad. When he's on, the film is properly Funny. When he's not, it's Funny/Heartwarming or just Heartwarming. This isn't to say that the three young leads don't get good lines: Bruce has some Gervaisesque material about what constitutes a proper "anecdote", but it's as if this essentially lumpen bloke has been briefly, supernaturally possessed by the ghost of a sophisticated comedy writer. The Heartwarming story slips along perfectly successfully, and I liked the hopeful "escape" ending — a welcome corrective, incidentally, to the miserable and culpable defeatism that finishes off Billy Liar. But there is also something puzzling and regressive about Cemetery Junction. Gervais and Merchant made a great television classic in The Office which, with miraculous subtlety and realism, tackled the realities of work as it is really experienced by real people right now. The "work" in this film is rather sketchily presented: vaguely lathing or sanding (or something) in a factory, or doing BR station announcements or flogging life insurance. This is work as it is imagined in When the Whistle Blows, the cheesy fictional sitcom in Gervais's TV series Extras – but enlarged to glossy, emotionally supercharged feature length. The 70s setting is careful and affectionate (great to see the Sony Trinitron KV1300UB telly, an eccentric 70s design madeleine that nerd-connoisseurs will prefer to the Spacehopper) but this is a gentle, sentimentalised 70s, without the menace or real depression evoked by Life on Mars or the Red Riding films. A steel and cast- and wrought-iron arch bridge with arched masonry approaches, the Washington Bridge was constructed over the Harlem River in 1886-1889 to connect the Washington Heights section of Manhattan with the Bronx. It has long been considered one of the nation's finest nineteenth-century steel arch bridges, perhaps second only to the famous Eads Bridge in St. Louis of 1867-74 . History of the Project After the Civil War, as the development of upper Manhattan proceeded, plans were begun for a crossing over the Harlem River to the Bronx, In 1868 the Board of Commissioners of Central Park (then responsible for the layout of new streets in upper Manhattan) considered the question of a new bridge in connection with the development of Washington Heights when Andrew Haswell Green, executive officer of the Board, suggested in a report that a bridge be built north of the High Bridge Aqueduct (Completed in 1848 by engineer John B. Jervis, High Bridge is a designated New York City Landmark.) In 1869 the New York State Legislature authorized a survey of bridge locations along the Harlem River, and an act of May 19, 1870, mandated the newly created Department of Public Parks to locate and build a bridge. Following a delay of several years, the New York State Supreme Court appointed commissioners in February 1876,to supervise the assemblage of land for the new bridge. A site was chosen 1500 feet north of High Bridge and land was acquired on both sides of the river. After another delay of several years, four alternate bridge designs including suspension, iron cantilever, and masonry arch types were proposed in February 1881, by William Jarvis McAlpine, chief engineer of the Department of Public Parks. In 1883 the department requested further design submissions and several were received, for cantilever and metal arch bridges. But since the only action in fifteen years was land acquisition, political pressure was applied (particularly by Andrew H. Green) for the transfer of bridge construction authority to a different body. On June 11, 1885, the Legislature created the Harlem River Bridge Commission (Chapter 487, Laws of 1885), and three new commissioners were appointed on July 21, 1885. William J. McAlpine was named chief engineer to the commissioners on September 29, 1885. McAlpine (1812-1890) was one of the country's leading engineers, involved during his long career with a great variety of difficult engineering projects in the United States, Canada, and around the world. Raised in upstate New York, he was a student of engineer John B, Jervis. Projects on which he worked included numerous railroads and canals in New York State and elsewhere, the waterworks of Brooklyn, Albany, and Chicago, the U.S. Navy Yard dry dock in Brooklyn, and the Third Avenue Bridge and Riverside Park and Drive in New York City. The Iron and Steel Arch Bridge Interest in the use of iron and steel for American bridges had increased greatly in the last third of the nineteenth century. The arch bridge was the second oldest form, after the suspension bridge, in which iron was used exclusively for structural members. The first iron arch bridge was constructed by-Darby and Wilkinson in 1775-1781 over the River Severn at Coalbrookdale, England. The first American iron arch bridge, completed in 1839 by Richard Delafield, carried the National Road over Dunlap's Creek at Brownsville, Pennsylvania. The second American iron arch bridge was the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge-Aqueduct over Rock Creek in Washington, D.C., built by Gen. Montgomery C. Miegs in 1858. But the use of the iron arch for bridges in the United States was rare until after the Civil War, when foundries were finally able to cast elements on a large enough scale. Carl Condit asserts that, "When the arch of iron and steel finally began to compete successfully with other forms, it did so because the builders frequently chose it on aesthetic rather than functional grounds." With the triple-span Eads Bridge crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis, designed by James B. Eads and built in 1867-1874, the use of steel was introduced into American bridge construction. The Eads Bridge is generally considered the greatest of the nineteenth-century American metal arch bridges. FAITH IN ACTION IN JACKSON COUNTY The Evangel United Methodist Church had an awesome time this past weekend during "Rethink Church" weekend! More than 50 volunteers gathered to collect food items for our local food pantry: My name is Kay Smith and I am co-chair of the serving team at Evangel United Methodist Church. We just spent all weekend going door to door to collect for our local JCMA food pantry. On Wednesday, April 21st, the women at the Jackson County Detention Center stuffed over 1,500 bags with flyers from our church. The flyers gave statistics of how many people go through the food pantry and the needs. A quote from several inmates, "Thank you for giving us this opportunity to help others! It makes us feel like we are helping." On Saturday, April 24th, a team of 50 church members and community members went door to door throughout Jackson County to deliver bags. On Sunday, April 25th, the team once again formed to pick up filled bags of food. Everyone met at the local food pantry for the delivery. We closed with a blessing over the food. Ken Waterman, Director of the food pantry, shared a story of a young lady who just came through the pantry on Friday. While crying, she shared her story of hardship with Ken and said she didn't know there were actually people who cared anymore. On Friday alone he said that 53 individuals came through the line. He said, "It is people like you who make it possible for these individuals and families to see there is hope." It was a weekend of change for our church and community! This is a response that I just got from one of our volunteers! Hi Kay, Terry was such a great lady to work with over in the C-Ville area. I had a really good time walking through the northern part of the town, having only walked that area about 12 years ago. There were such good hearted and receptive people in C-Ville. The generosity of the people who have so little themselves was astounding. One young man, in his 20's probably could have used a hand up himself, yet he filled a bag with groceries. It was from the heart. All of it, from the heart. An elderly lady who was missing one arm below the shoulder, and caring for her son who suffered a stroke a few years ago, filled a bag. A kind older gentleman who doesn't cook, donated some items in his bag. A couple who weren't from the area, but stopped by C-Ville Market Place on Saturday, generously gave a few dollars toward the Pantry. Marvelous. And the Circleville Christian Church just took up a collection in January. Again, thank you to Terry. Ginnie Kay M. Smith you can never leave Barbed wire and fence around Cook County jail. It's the largest single-site county jail in the US, with nearly 10,000 inmates. Judges and the Department of Justice regularly find conditions in the jail to be unacceptable, but little seems to change. "Cuss words and stuff?" Runya Vita looks to the ladder again, looking torn. She'd been fomenting a good mad for over a week and wasn't ready quite to let it go. She nods at the suggestion, reluctantly, looking aggressive again. "But who TOLD?" And on the heels of Frank's remark. "An' they put a CAGE up there! We didn' need it then an' how're you supposed to get out if things get bad?" Darkness Odigaunt shook her head, "I didn't know there was a cage at school, Frank." She looked at Jaina and Conor, but seems to have missed a good part f their talk, "We have a way to get out, a secret that Father told me about." She took a step closer to the center of the room. Jaina Lefevre looks at Conor. "Just sayin' it like it is. And I'm not some dumb baby that has to talk in stupid words. I can use whatever words I want." She crosses her arms and looks at him. "And I love Kimani like a sister, but I'm pretty mad at her for being stupid enough to get caught - again- and for making Rai hurt and all of us worry. And I don't want my Moms getting hurted rescuin' someone who ain't smart enough to NOT get caught in the first place." Runya Vita looks at Frank, then at a the nun, distracted. "A secret?" Phoebe Scribe tilted her head, then looked at Runya. Was the girl right about them wanting to keep school kids in? "Why is it a secret?" She furrowed her brow and eyed the ladder, then set off in a slow limp towards it. "It's up high?" Runya Vita follows Frank and says, "This used to lead up to the bottom of the Nest." It comes out easier this time, like she's getting used to the past tense. "An' it goes up really high? All the way to the roof. Cater an' me, we went along ladders and got above the church and it was real windy? And we had to go through the cat's places, the roofs and this one tried to shoot us only we ran..." she's obviously attached to the story before she trails off, sneaking a look at the nun. Conor Nitely's lips stayed pressed into a thin line as he listened. "Not supposed to say cuss words 'cause Miss Winny said that's not how gentlemen talk." He was kind of insistent on this point for some reason. "And Imma be a gentleman." Gaze flicked appraisingly over the girl, she seemed -different- somehow. "Not smart to get caught," he nodded sagely. "And...bad when people get hurt." Darkness Odigaunt nodded, "A secret. I can always tell you later, whn it's safe to tell secrets." I thought I will post a photo today early but early today a disaster came ! o.o;; Lily was so not co-operating & everytime I try to make her sit *both Lala & Lowey sit but when she joins, they all fall* .. When she sat once, she made Lowey fall of the bookcase to floor & his head cap jumped all the way 1.5 meter O_O;; .. I truly was scared T^T *Lowey is ok or I would be TT^TT all the day* Next thing I cursed ~ then suddenly she fall & all the table fall from the bookcase + the glass gars broken & glass pieces spread everywhere ! O_O I spent 1 hr cleaning & looking for the glasses , beads, broken clay pieces! * I hate that there is no rug on the marble floor* everything goes everywhere T^T Part of my display was ruined :( .. 1. Craved pumpkin + filling 2. 2 mices 3. 2 glass bottles full of candies *I filled it with liquid clear glue so candies will stay in place* << all are ruined T^T 4. there were 4 spiders .. I donno where the other 3 went . May be the vacuum took them inside when I tried cleaning *though I searched for them everywhere before I turn it on* So ~ that's why I delayed posting the photo early this morning! & now Lily creeps me ! Atiu, Cook Islands Atiu is the third largest of the Cook Islands, with a proper economy based on agriculture - taro as well as coffee are grown here. It has an airstrip and a harbour. The day of our visit on the Clipper Odyssey coincided with the monthly supply ship from Rarotonga. To get the supplies the Atiuans used a Hitachi digger to winch and drag their large barge down the slipway and into the water . It was an impressive operation to watch. Cook Island dancers 2 A group of Cook Islanders visiting our city who gave a show with great energy and exhuberance. Tricky lighting mixed flourescent and tungsten required some fiddling to get close to real colours. Also needed a shutter speed to get sharp faces but moving feathers. The buffet you can't see the entire spread in this photo, but we had "Bert's Big Burgers", "Super Grover Super Dogs", "Count von Count Crunchies" (potato chips), "Elmo's Goldfish" (goldfish crackers in a fish bowl), "Oscar the Grouch's Garden Patch" (veggies arranged in neat rows to resemble a garden), "Mr. Noodle's Noodles" (mac n cheese for kids, and a delicious pasta salad for adults), "Abby Cadabby's Fairy Fruit Wands" (fruit kabobs), "Zoe's Sweet Station" (candy buffet wtih rainbow-colored candies), "Big Bird's Birthday Cake", and "Cookie Monster Cookies" Sesame Street Little People +5 I snagged 5 more Sesame Street Little People at a pre-yardsale today. I didn't even know there was a Herry Monster, Sherlock Hemlock and Roosevelt Franklin. Grover is the only one I'm missing now. In addition to these guys I also got Bert, Snuffle-upagus, the Sesame Street Apartment and a couple little accessories. I really only wanted these guys, but the woman would only sell as a set. I estimate each one was about 75cents each.
