Atlantis Paradise Hotel Yup, this is where I stayed. This hotel is 5 stars from the outside, 1 star service on the inside. I was so excited when I learned that I was going to be staying at this renown resort. The rooms at the Royal Tower where I was in, were $550 USD per night (we paid $390 for a conference rate). Expecting everything to be in top-notch shape, imagine my surprise when I walked into my room, to blanket covers with holes, paper-thin walls and a TV that wasn't working. It took me 2 days to finally get someone to fix my television. I will spare details, but my blood boiled and I was actually very unpleasant to the people at guest services. This is what I have come to learn about the staff at the hotel: no one wants to take responsibility, everyone has a nonchalant standoffish attitude, no one cares that the guests are pissed off, and you have to ask 20 people for the same thing before someone will finally take care of it for you. However, to be fair, the grounds of the hotel are quite spectacular. The aquarium there is gigantic and filled with lots of exotic and tropical fishes. My suggestion is that if you ever visit Nassau, stay somewhere else, but come and tour the grounds of Atlantis. The rooms are definitely NOT worth the rate that is charged. Service and food are both sub-par (though, there is a NOBU inside the casino). However, if you don't run into anything that requires service, then I suppose it was decent. The third of five shuttle missions planned for 2010, this was the last planned launch for Atlantis. The Russian-built Mini Research Module-1, also known as Rassvet, or "dawn," will be delivered and it will provide additional storage space and a new docking port for Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft. The laboratory will be attached to the bottom port of the station's Zarya module. The mission's three spacewalks will focus on storing spare components outside the station, including six batteries, a communications antenna and parts for the Canadian Dextre robotic arm. 1 Augustus, Zermatt. Toen we aankwamen in het autovrije Zermatt, na 500km, moesten de koffers met een electrobusje naar het hotel gebracht worden. Wij moesten lopen, ik liep langs het station (natuurlijk) waar een Glacier Express binnen kwam. Akwaba! Akwaba* au Wafou indeed. The Wafou is the hotel that we stay at while in Abidjan if given our druthers since it is one of the most secure locations in all of post-war Cote d'Ivorie. JBles once got stuck at the Ibis Marcoury after having failed to book in advance with the Wafou and it was an eerie and uncomfortable disappointment for him. He was still new to the region then and hadn't taken into account the fact that the resort books up weeks in advance and for weeks at a time due to high demand by business travelers and NGO workers. Now we always make sure to get a reservation in as soon as possible. A number of factors have coalesced into making this former pleasure resort a safe haven and the de facto business hotel. It's located only a few short miles from the airport and is set back far from the street. There's only one entrance which can easily be closed off by a large blast door which is covered in electrical-fence style wiring. The perimeter is entirely walled off, laced with barbed wire, and dotted with security cameras. The compound is frequented by the French military and tapped in to both the French and UN networks which would ensure a quick evacuation in case the situation in country were to deteriorate. So that's why we stay there. Otherwise, it's about as far away from the concept of "business hotel" as one could hope for and I love it for that contrast. In its heyday the Wafou was a luxury resort that catered to the city's glitterati who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle without ever leaving sight of the lagoon. Equipped with a beautiful pool and a gigantic paillote that serves as a nightclub, the resort's rooms are an irreverent collection of hutlike structures done in the Sudano-Sahelian adobe architectural style reminiscent of the Malian Great Mosque of Djenne. It also plays host to a modernist French restaurant whose chef routinely produces creatively delicious fare. Sitting astride the Lagoon, the views provided are beautiful and slightly strange. To the southwest, Abidjan's skyline cuts a ghostly figure in the omnipresent haze of smog that permeates the metro area. To the north, a large oil refinery belches said smog out of its stacks which burn eternally with the fires of Mordor and occasionally explode a bit. All in all, the experience is unique and one of my personal favorites so far. *I always assumed that "awkwaba" meant "welcome" in a Malian dialect (since the architecture of the place is cribbed mostly from that region) but the Googles suggest that the word is more commonly spelled as "awkwaaba" and is used mainly by the Ashanti/Akan people of Ghana. The Red Cross-125th Anniversary Gala--Please read comments!! May 12th we will be screening a short film (which we made in 48 hours) in Washington D.C. as part of the Red Cross 125th Anniversary Gala. Six independent film companies were invited to make a very short film that pertained to the Red Cross as an effort to give the organization a more hip image. We were honored to be asked to participate. They are putting us up in a swanky hotel for a few nights and we will attend an opening ceremony where Jane Seymour and her husband James Keach (producer of Walk The Line) will announce the winning film. The Red Cross informed me that all six films will be online within the next couple of days, and anyone who views the films can vote on their fav. I will be sure to post the link as soon as they have it up since you know I will be asking you all to vote for our film--Utter Disaster! Three-eyed Owl? After a run of 5 straight weeks without a whole day away from work (around our annual maintenance shutdown), I was very happy to take a long weekend off and "get the heck out of Dodge... My friends John, Ed and I headed to Oak Hammock Marsh (near Stonewall, Manitoba - for my American friends, that's about 3 hours straight north from Grand Forks, North Dakota) for a weekend of birding and photography. After the gale-force winds on Saturday settled down, the birds came out in numbers and made for a great weekend. While we were back at the motel for a late breakfast after a great morning shooting session on the mudflats, one of the staff at the hotel had seen some of our gear in the room and asked us if we were going to be a shooting a local residents owl's nest - we said no, but we would really like to! We called the family up on thier local farm and they were very hospitable (many thanks!) and allowed us to come onto thier property and shoot some photos. Unfortunately, the situation wasn't very conducive to good photographs - the nest was ~25 feet up in a tree in a thick grove of trees - this was about the best we could manage in the situation...
