Macros, best done during the day when a proper flash or lighting is not available. Here is a blurry macro of the timing chain.

The valves are making noise on this truck. In the past you would clearly need a valve clearance adjustment. However, this engine is equiped with hydraulic valve lifters which require no adjustment and zero clearance. Somehow there is noise coming from the rocker cover assembly and something needs to be fixed in here. I did the easiest part: removing the cover, but finding out where to proceed from here will be a little tricky.

BUTTERFLY VALVE ELECTRIC ACTUATOR : ELECTRIC ACTUATOR

Butterfly Valve Electric Actuator : Valve Steam Store.

Butterfly Valve Electric Actuator

butterfly valve electric actuator

    electric actuator
  • Also known as an Electro-Mechanical Actuator uses an electrically operated motor-driven gear train or screw to position the actuator stem. The actuator may respond to either a digital or analog electrical signal.

  • (Electric actuators) An electric motor uses electrical energy to produce mechanical energy, very typically through the interaction of magnetic fields and current-carrying conductors.

  • Actuators are used for the automation of industrial valves and can be found in all kinds of technical process plants: they are used in wastewater treatment plants, power plants and even refineries. This is where they play a major part in automating process control.

    butterfly valve
  • a valve in a carburetor that consists of a disc that turns and acts as a throttle

  • (Butterfly Valves) A valve consisting of a cylindrical body with a rotating vane to control flow. Tight Shutoff is obtained by an elastomer body liner into which the vane seats.

  • A valve consisting of a disk rotating on an axis across the diameter of a pipe to regulate the flow, as in the throttles of many engines

  • A valve consisting of a pair of semicircular plates that are attached to a spindle across a pipe and hinged to allow flow only one way

  • A butterfly valve is a valve which can be used for isolating or regulating flow. The closing mechanism takes the form of a disk. Operation is similar to that of a ball valve, which allows for quick shut off.

Are We Witnessing the Start of a Global Revolution?
North Africa and the Global Political Awakening, Part 1

by Andrew Gavin Marshall

For the first time in human history almost all of humanity is politically activated, politically conscious and politically interactive... The resulting global political activism is generating a surge in the quest for personal dignity, cultural respect and economic opportunity in a world painfully scarred by memories of centuries-long alien colonial or imperial domination... The worldwide yearning for human dignity is the central challenge inherent in the phenomenon of global political awakening... That awakening is socially massive and politically radicalizing... The nearly universal access to radio, television and increasingly the Internet is creating a community of shared perceptions and envy that can be galvanized and channeled by demagogic political or religious passions. These energies transcend sovereign borders and pose a challenge both to existing states as well as to the existing global hierarchy, on top of which America still perches...

The youth of the Third World are particularly restless and resentful. The demographic revolution they embody is thus a political time-bomb, as well... Their potential revolutionary spearhead is likely to emerge from among the scores of millions of students concentrated in the often intellectually dubious "tertiary level" educational institutions of developing countries. Depending on the definition of the tertiary educational level, there are currently worldwide between 80 and 130 million "college" students. Typically originating from the socially insecure lower middle class and inflamed by a sense of social outrage, these millions of students are revolutionaries-in-waiting, already semi-mobilized in large congregations, connected by the Internet and pre-positioned for a replay on a larger scale of what transpired years earlier in Mexico City or in Tiananmen Square. Their physical energy and emotional frustration is just waiting to be triggered by a cause, or a faith, or a hatred...

[The] major world powers, new and old, also face a novel reality: while the lethality of their military might is greater than ever, their capacity to impose control over the politically awakened masses of the world is at a historic low. To put it bluntly: in earlier times, it was easier to control one million people than to physically kill one million people; today, it is infinitely easier to kill one million people than to control one million people.[1]

- Zbigniew Brzezinski
Former U.S. National Security Advisor
Co-Founder of the Trilateral Commission
Member, Board of Trustees, Center for Strategic and International Studies

An uprising in Tunisia led to the overthrow of the country’s 23-year long dictatorship of President Ben Ali. A new ‘transitional’ government was formed, but the protests continued demanding a totally new government without the relics of the previous tyranny. Protests in Algeria have continued for weeks, as rage mounts against rising food prices, corruption and state oppression. Protests in Jordan forced the King to call on the military to surround cities with tanks and set up checkpoints. Tens of thousands of protesters marched on Cairo demanding an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak. Thousands of activists, opposition leaders and students rallied in the capitol of Yemen against the corrupt dictatorship of President Saleh, in power since 1978. Saleh has been, with U.S. military assistance, attempting to crush a rebel movement in the north and a massive secessionist movement growing in the south, called the “Southern Movement.” Protests in Bolivia against rising food prices forced the populist government of Evo Morales to backtrack on plans to cut subsidies. Chile erupted in protests as demonstrators railed against rising fuel prices. Anti-government demonstrations broke out in Albania, resulting in the deaths of several protesters.

It seems as if the world is entering the beginnings of a new revolutionary era: the era of the ‘Global Political Awakening.’ While this ‘awakening’ is materializing in different regions, different nations and under different circumstances, it is being largely influenced by global conditions. The global domination by the major Western powers, principally the United States, over the past 65 years, and more broadly, centuries, is reaching a turning point. The people of the world are restless, resentful, and enraged. Change, it seems, is in the air. As the above quotes from Brzezinski indicate, this development on the world scene is the most radical and potentially dangerous threat to global power structures and empire. It is not a threat simply to the nations in which the protests arise or seek change, but perhaps to a greater degree, it is a threat to the imperial Western powers, international institutions, multinati

Valve, Needle

This type of valve is a special case of a globe valve. The flow should (but does not always do so) come up under the needle (from the right) and then goes around the needle and out to the left. The flow pattern in most valves is set up so that when the valve is closed that the valve packing is on the low pressure side. This reduces the probability of leaks.

ABC 'Skootamota',........

ABC 'Skootamota',........

ABC Skootamota 1921 133 cc OHV frame# 54 CC 10/77 engine # 2585

Around 1920 there was both in Europe and the USA a short-lived interest in motorised scooters.
Scooters were light, cheap to run and simple to use; it was thought that they might attract new ( female) urban customers, that would not so easily choose for a conventional motorcycle as means of transport.
The ABC (All British Cycle) is one of the very first scooters and probably the best of the first generation of machines.
It was designed by the prolific and inventive Granville Bradshaw and uses a 60mm by 40mm overhead exhaust valve single- cylinder engine driving the 16” wheel by chain. Later models - such as this one is- have a full OHV configuration.
The tubular frame is light and made a very manageable machine with a speed range of up to 20 mph. “ One push with the left foot on the ground starts the engine and the machine” stated the brochure.
Unlike some machines of the period it is fitted with a seat and was used quite prominently on the roads of the period.
This example is an older restoration.

Peek Valve Seat

peek valve seat

    valve seat
  • The non-moving part of a valve. Water flow is stopped when the moveable portion of the valve comes in contact with the valve seat.

  • Surface against which a valve contacts. Usually, a valve at rest is against the inner seat, and a valve that is actuated is against the outer seat.

  • The valve seat in an internal combustion gasoline or diesel engine is the surface against which an intake or an exhaust valve rests during the portion of the engine operating cycle when that valve is closed.

    peek

1987 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

1987 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

I've photographed this 1987 Jetta GLI, equipped with a sweet sixteen-valve four-cylinder engine rated at 123 horsepower, before. However, I noticed something different about this Jetta this time.

The wheel hub caps were back on! :-)

Then I peeked inside and found . . . Recaro seats! :-D

It became apparent that the owner of this GLI is bent on customizing and restoring the car to showroom condition.

Base price for a Jetta GLI sedan in 1987 was $11,690 versus $13,725 for the 16-valver.

With the advent of the five-door GTI hatchback in America, a GLI version of the next Jetta isn't likely. The car had been originally created as a counterpoint to the three-door GTI hatchback.

The other alternative was to go with the servo type valve but they are not half as durable as the manual-cable type.

SPRING SAFETY VALVE. SPRING SAFETY

Spring Safety Valve. Proportional Valve Pdf

Spring Safety Valve

spring safety valve

    safety valve
  • a valve in a container in which pressure can build up (as a steam boiler); it opens automatically when the pressure reaches a dangerous level

  • A safety valve is a valve mechanism for the automatic release of a substance from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. It is part of a bigger set named pressure safety valves (PSV) or pressure relief valves (PRV).

  • A valve opening automatically to relieve excessive pressure, esp. in a boiler

  • A means of giving harmless vent to feelings of tension or stress

  • The safety valve is a provision in the Sentencing Reform Act and the United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines that authorizes a sentence below the statutory minimum for certain nonviolent, non-managerial drug offenders with little or no criminal history.

    spring
  • Move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward

  • Operate or cause to operate by means of a mechanism

  • a metal elastic device that returns to its shape or position when pushed or pulled or pressed; "the spring was broken"

  • Move rapidly or suddenly from a constrained position by or as if by the action of a spring

  • the season of growth; "the emerging buds were a sure sign of spring"; "he will hold office until the spring of next year"

  • jump: move forward by leaps and bounds; "The horse bounded across the meadow"; "The child leapt across the puddle"; "Can you jump over the fence?"

Craters of the Moon

Craters of the Moon

Craters of the Moon Thermal Area (or Karapiti in Mori language) is a region with geothermal activity north of Taupo, New Zealand. It is a part of Wairakei, the largest geothermal field in New Zealand, with a surface area of about 25 km2, which lies in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

The name springs from the many hydrothermal eruption craters, which are in part barren and which have bright colours. Combined with the numerous steam vents, constantly shifting, collapsing and reforming giving the whole area desolate appearance, and the sulphur smell, the whole area has an “unearthly” atmosphere. The craters are a relatively recent feature of the area and appeared as a result of human activity in the region.

In 1859 Ferdinand von Hochstetter, an Austrian geologist who traveled through the area, reported a colossal column of steam from the Karapiti Blowhole (fumarole), observable from about 20 km away. It was difficult to approach because steam vents and springs covered the valley floor and the ground was warm, soft, iron-stained clay for great distances around.

By the beginning of the 20th century the Blowhole was a tourist attraction, albeit not of the level of the nearby Wairakei Geyser Valley. It's worthwhile reading the “Impression of a Trip” in 1927, in which the Karapiti Blowhole is named “the safety valve of the North Island”:

”After dinner (which was served at 6 p.m.) we took our seats in the car which went to Karapeeti (the safety valve of the North Island) and the “Huka” falls, a little higher up the Waikato.

Karapeeti blow hole is an escaping volume of superheated steam with a pressure of 180 lbs. to the square inch coming through an aperture two feet by one foot. The guide lit a sack sprinkled with kerosene so that the visitors could see the escaping steam in the darkness and after the sack had partly burnt away he picked it up on a stick and shook the burning pieces down into the blow hole. These were immediately carried up in the jet of steam and presented a very weird fireworks effect, the sparks remaining alight, proving that it was super-heated or dry steam. This blow hole, according to Maori tradition, has been constant for the last 200 years and the Maoris of the early days of New Zealand used this column of steam as a beacon to guide them with their canoes across Lake Taupo which is six miles distant.”

VERTICAL LIFT CHECK VALVE : VERTICAL LIFT

Vertical lift check valve : Thermally actuated valves : Capillary tube expansion valve.

Vertical Lift Check Valve

vertical lift check valve

    vertical lift
  • A rare feature where instead of a lift hill, a coaster car/train is lifted vertically upwards on a section of track that acts as a lift. When this section is aligned with the rest of the circuit at the top, the car/train moves forwards to complete the ride.

  • A type of lift where the train rolls onto a section of track and is raised straight up.

  • Refers to a hardware design that causes doors to open vertically where no horizontal tracks are required

    check valve
  • A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid

  • A valve which will allow water to pass in one direction but will close and prevent flow (backflow) in the opposite direction.

  • A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.

  • Limits the flow of gas to one direction only. Use a check valve between the bubbler and generator to prevent unwanted pressure build up in the generator, and a safety against a low level bubbler. A check valve, such as used on torches, is recommended.

Calumet River Railroad Vertical Lift Bridges

Calumet River Railroad Vertical Lift Bridges

Calumet River Railroad Vertical Lift Bridges
Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway Bridge

Construction Date: 1912-1913

The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway’s two parallel vertical-lift spans over the Calumet River, and two neighboring spans built by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway (of which one survives), are the largest multiple installation of Waddell and Harrington’s patented design. Differences between the two pairs of bridges demonstrate disparity among American railroads’ building codes, as well as Waddell and Harrington’s refinement of the vertical-lift form. This site’s many bridges built in close proximity is an artifact of intense competition among trunk lines entering Chicago from the east, and perhaps the greatest physical monument to the railroad capital of North America.

Photographed September 26th, 2010 from I90 looking east just before the Chicago Skyway.
