Le Posographe The Posographe was a very interesting light metering device, made by Ets. Kaufmann in Paris. One side of the Posographe had a sheet for exterior and the other side a sheet for interior photography. By sliding the indicators for all the different parameters, it was possible to destine the most ideal time/aperture setting of the camera. All the indicators have been mechanically connected to each other by means of boomerang shaped tiny flat metal blades. The larger indicator in the right top corner marks the recommended shutter speed for the combination of the set parameter combination. BLUE VELVET DRAPE - VELVET DRAPE
Blue Velvet Drape
Day 221 - Illumination (221/365) Trying to get back into a creative groove again, and wanting to try something new, so it was time to get my trusty Sunpak flash and remote triggers out again. I stood the blue glass vase on top of the Sunpak hammerhead flashgun so the flash would fire up into and through the vase. Behind the vase is a piece of foamboard with a black velvet sheet from a light tent draped over it and under the flash and vase. I put another piece of velvet over the top of the flash to hide it and over the parts of the flash head not under the vase. Image is 'straight out of the camera' (SOOC) with absolutely no post-processing except resizing/downsampling in Irfanview. Olympus E-600, 14-42mm ED lens @ 14mm/f3.5, 1/30s exposure, ISO400, Aperture Priority mode. Composed using LiveView and AF, tripod mounted. Lit by Sunpak AutoZoom 4000 flash set @ GN1.8 (1/128) from underneath with Sunpak remote sensor positioned to point upright in parallel to the vase. Flash triggered by CTR-301P radio trigger/receiver. The Witch Wore Blue Velvet Elphaba is green with envy, and so is every witch at Hogwarts. This sumptuous midnight blue cotton velvet hat is everything a witch chapeau should be. The brim is wide and mysterious; it projects about 6 inches from the forehead and is fully wired so you can bend it to your will. The cone reaches about 18 inches and is also wired so you can bend it for a quirky touch or leave it pointer straight for channeling. Green/blue iridescent sheer fabric band gracefully drapes the base of the crown, gathered by a buckle with glass gems that sparkle. A tall spray of peacock feather plumes and spears add that decadent drama, and all adorn the hat in the most striking manner. For the gothic gorgeous witch in you....be wicked. Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds or Palace of the Breeze), Jaipur (Pink city), Rajasthan, India. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Usta in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. Its unique five-storey exterior is also akin to the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas that are decorated with intricate lattice work. The original intention of the lattice was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen, since they had to observe strict "purdah" (face cover). Built of red and pink sandstone, the palace is situated on the main thoroughfare in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre. It forms part of the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana or women's chambers, the chambers of the harem. It is particularly striking when viewed early in the morning, lit with the golden light of sunrise. (source: wikipedia) The Hawa Mahal is the most photographed monument in the Pink City (Jaipur). I got there just in time as the sun was setting (top left side of the image). I wanted to shoot the Hawa Mahal during the blue hour and was searching for a higher location as the streets were crowded. I found a balcony on top of a shop and asked the shop keeper if i could take a picture from there. he agreed but charged me 100 rupees. (2 dollars). I think that was money well spent as i was happy with the result. It's fall time in Michigan when I snapped this photo! For the record, there were 4 K-Marts in the Saginaw area but the one pictured is still operating. One is the present day Horizon's Conference Center. Another is abandoned on Bay Road in Saginaw. The third shuttered K-Mart closed in 2004-2005 and was part of the now demolished Fort Saginaw Mall in Saginaw (technically Buena Vista Township). Council trial new street lamps in an attempt to save money P1300767 - Recent budget cuts have led the local council to finding alternatives on services provided. Our roving reporter has saw a number of these 30-40 foot snow drops previous and was unsure what they were to be used for. A council spokesperson said they were still testing the usefulness of these street lamps, but said they felt the dual purpose of carbon absorption and oxygen production with the gas lamp shades seem to fit into the environment and recent directives from Brussels. Following up on the Brussels connection we had no comment from the Brussels representative when we met him on the local allotment . Image taking on the street lamp test site. Packed We didn't get the Uhaul until Saturday morning and we were having a going away party that night and leaving Sunday morning. We started to pack the Uhaul and when we finally got the king-sized bed shoved in there it just seemed too daunting for me. Luckily, a friend, Kelly, came over and tetrised everything in there. If she hadn't come over I think we would have been standing there staring for quite some time. While she packed I made it my job to get everything out of the house so she could find the right size to fit any given hole she could find. We got out of there by 5pm, with plenty of time to spare for our 7pm party. Abyssinian Baptist Church 138th Street, Harlem, Manhattan The Abyssinian Baptist Church, built in 1922-23, is the home of one of New York City's oldest church organizations and the second oldest within the family of African-American churches, in Manhattan. Organized in 1808 by a small group of black worshippers who withdrew from the predominantly white First Baptist Church on Gold Street,, the Abyssnian Baptist Church was incorporated in the following year adopting the ancient name for Ethiopia. The northward movement of the Abyssinian congregation, which occupied several successive locations from its first home in a wooden church on Worth Street to its imposing stone edifice in Harlem, followed the residential patterns of New York's black population. Under the leadership of the Reverend William Spellman during the second half of the nineteenth century the church grew rapidly into of the wealthiest of the "African'' congregations. In the twentieth century, the Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Sr.'s "social gospel", blending social activism with spiritual leadership, set the tone for Abyssinian's ongoing mission to serve its community. Commissioned during Powell's tenure, the striking church building and the adjoining community house were the work of Charles W. Bolton & Son, a productive Philadelphia firm which specialized in churches. The neo-Gothic design of the church reflects the tradition of Protestant church architecture of the 1920s. Powell's son and successor, Adam Clayton Powell Jr, - who served eleven terms as a U.S. Congressman -put Abyssinian at the forefront of the national crusade for social reform and civil rights. During his pastorate, the church membership grew to over 10,000, placing it among the largest Protestant churches in the world. Today, the church leadership under the Reverend Calvin Butts continues its commitment religious and social service and economic development in Harlem. Abyssinian Baptist Church is a symmetrically-planned building faced with rock-faced blocks of Manhattan schist laid in random ashlar and trimmed with white terra cotta. The church occupies approximately three-quarters of its 150-foot wide lot; the asymmetrical community house adjoins the main church building to the east. The church is massed with a central gabled section flanked by square towers; a somewhat lower tower marks the east end of the community house. The focal point of the church facade is the central gabled section. The gabled facade has a high base that is pierced by three grops of three windows each, the openings separated by terracotta, piers. The openings were apparently originally filled with leaded, diamond-paned windows. A terra cotta beltcourse..separates the base from themain section of the gable which is pierced by an enormous pointed-arched window that fills most of the facade. The sides of the window are flanked by a keyed terra-cotta enframement, while the section from the springline to the peak of the arch is outlined by a projecting terra-cotta molding that continues, from the springline, across the church and community house facades. The large stained-glass window opening, with its terra-cotta tracery, is divided vertically into three sections by stepped, buttress-like piers composed of rock-faced stone (the step of each buttress has terra-cotta coping), and smooth terra cotta at the upper portions. Horizontally, the expanse of glass is broken by a band of square Gothic panels, each bearing a shield embellished with a Greek cross. The window is covered with protective sash at the exterior. Running across the gabled facade, above the window, is a terra-cotta beltcourse ornamented with terra-cotta bosses in the form of angels, saints, and symbols of the four evangelists. The crenelated roofline of the gable is outlined by a terra-cotta cap molding. At the peak of the gable is a terra-cotta niche crowned by a bouquet. Each of the square end towers is divided from bottom to top into four sections (entrance, two window sections, and parapet); the upper two sections rise above the central gable, the community house, and the surrounding buildings. The beltcourses on the gable all continue onto the tower facades. Each tower has a central, pointed-arched entrance set within a rectangular terra-cotta enframement (several steps lead to the entrance in the east tower). Each pair of wooden doors is located below a pointed-arched wood transom divided into seven panels that were probably originally filled with leaded glass. The spandrels are ornamented with shields set within quatrefoils. Above the entrances, the second level of each tower is articulated by a pointed-arched opening with a terra-cotta keyed surround. Each of these openings is divided into two windows with terracotta tracery. The third section of each tower has similar windows cut into both the front and side elevations; each of these windows is capped by a drip lintel with trefoil spandrels. The beltcourse below th Delicate Threads Don't know what this plant is, but it is huge... Here the morning light was reflecting a bit off the silky white threads; I did not even realize the "web" of horizontal threads was there until I saw these macro shots... I like macro photography because it does reveal things that we can't see with the naked eye - often unexpectedly beautiful parts of everyday life. _____________________________________________________________________ Active Assignment Weekly: ASSIGNMENT: A study in texture. The texture might be a macro of a leaf or of a wrinkled hand, or it might be an interesting juxtaposition of several textures such as a wooden blind over a window in a brick wall. The focus is on the 'study' aspect with attention to detail and capturing the texture(s) as if one were taking the pic from which to do a detailed drawing. But, of course, the composition is also important. RESTRICTION: No addition or application of textures from a photo program - the textures should be inherent in the subject. Sharpening, cropping, saturation, exposure and those kind of manipulations are OK. CHALLENGE: Make the pic b&w, or sepia, or otherwise monochromatic. PERMANENT SHADE STRUCTURES - SHADE STRUCTURES
Permanent Shade Structures
Sangshad Bhaban | Square takes the Circle I took this picture from a cube shaped structure with five circles on five side. The tree on the left-hand corner messes up the shot. I tried to remove it using photoshop but I didn't feel too good about that either. ------- Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban is the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, located in the capital Dhaka. It was created by architect Louis I. Kahn and is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world. It houses all parliamentary activities of Bangladesh. Construction of the Jatiya Shangshad Bhaban began in 1961 by the Government of Pakistan as a permanent building for the federal legislature of both West and East Pakistan. However, it was the eighth (and last) session of the second parliament of Bangladesh that first used it on 15 February 1982 after its construction was completed on 28 January of the same year. The Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban has been in operation and has acted as the sole complex used as the National Assembly ever since. (wikipedia) JP&Z BM2006 Shade Here's the planned layout, plus a calculated shadow diagram. There are two rectangular shade units at right angles, with a third shade cloth draped diagonally between them. The rectangular shade units had a black pipe arch at either end and the arches were joined by a lattice of rope. The arches were located on guide rebar stakes and were secured to the ground with nylon tie-down straps. The arches were free-standing once they had their guys installed. The structure was oriented to keep the tent and living area in permanent shade. The table and blue chairs caught late-afternoon shade, in time for supper. Any additional shade from nearby objects was just a bonus. Baby Steps Took my backdoor area and freshened it up. Repainted the ceiling area a fresh ultra white in flat paint to cover the multi-finished white ceiling as shown in the "before". Painted both the door leading outside and to the basement so they would match. Used Behr Premium Ultra Plus in "Roman Plaster". Replaced the crooked miniblind (with slat missing) with a plain rectangular curtain in a funky retro pattern in shades of brown and olive green. Hung two small Ikea mirrors on basement door; hung a swatch of extra fabric in matted frame to tie the area together. Fresh! Windows Area - AFTER We flipped the furniture and lightened everything with colors and a chair/table/rug from IKEA. I also put bamboo roman shades at the windows instead of the basic blinds. ROLL A WAY SHUTTERS : ROLL A
Roll A Way Shutters
Black and white, without the white Some time ago, I shot a whole roll using my Mamiya C330 and Mamiya-Sekor 55mm wide-angle lens. Due to a shutter fault (ie, it wasn't opening at all at the time*) the pictures on the entire roll and half of the following roll (until I switched lenses) all turned out identical. Here's an example. In this particular one, I find it interesting how this spurious feature has had an equalising effect on the different subject matter. The occlusion of any original information about the photograph at the point of taking causes a complete lack of metadata. What we know about a photograph - the extra information outside of the photograph (such as the photographer, the time, the place) - can affect our perception of the photograph itself. Here, we have a total occlusion of intra information, within the photograph, which in turn prevents us from forming distinct perceptions regarding the way I originally shot these photographs. Even I've completely forgotten what the original subjects were, and when and where they were taken. Thus, I'm finding it quite difficult to sort out which ones are the good ones and which ones aren't quite so good, such is the strong effect of the information occlusion on my perception of the photographs. * since fixed by dismantling and catching the things that go sproing across the room before they indeed did. Electro Toronto Up High My first roll of film through my Yashica Electro 35 GSN This Friday my gsn arrived in the mail. I purchased it off ebay in so called "minty" condition. It took me about 10 seconds to see that the seals were crumbling and the range finder was out of vertical alignment. About an hours work to replace the seals, stupid me blocked the film counter into permanent reset no big deal as I don't usually bother with film counters and it is a easy fix. Took another 1/2 hour or so to make a battery holder out of a spring and 2 o-rings. Today I loaded it with iso100 film shot a roll on the way to Shoppers Drugmart where I got it developed and scanned in one hour for $3 Canadian. This is one of the better shots: Electro Toronto My findings: Good: Very good light meter and shutter even in low light. Lens good colour and details Bright view finder with parallax correction Bad: Lens flare if any where near the sun maybe a hood will help but much worse then any of my other lens. Ugly: Shutter release with all those switches is a bit rough and under and over lights come on at different points maybe the pod needs a replacement. But it does act repeatably so I can get use to it. Worse range finder I own, yellow spot is dim and hard to see in bright light. I currently own a 1953 Zeiss Ikon Contax IIIa and a 1956 Argus C44. The frostey windows upon that old Oldsmobile Toronado remind Me of wintertime. ------------ Covert Street near St. Marys Avenue in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Slide guitar 'Slide' not as playing style ('bottleneck'), but as in '35mm transparency'. Anyone remember film? Very first impressions from my new phone (Sony Ericsson X10). Compare the previous shot with this version on Fuji Velvia film.. Just kidding :) Too obviously, this is the not-so-great effect from the Vignette app: a combination of Velvia film 'emulation' and framing like a 35mm slide.. Good for jokes, but no more than that... Where I write my life away I have places where all my stories begin. They begin on the love seat located in my living room. To the right of me is a window. Out the window are a flowing creek, my front yard, and the road I travel on everyday. To my left is a sliding glass door. When I look through it I see my porch, a pump house, my backyard full of scrap lumber and a ditch. I hardly look out my window because it’s covered by a Dale Earnhardt Jr throw. The only time the window is useful is when the sun is shining on me as I write. To my left is the part of the love seat that “catches” all of my homework, books, papers and so on. It stays cluttered. To my right, I have a blue bookshelf that resembles a locker. I always set my drinks on it and occasionally a pack of cigarettes. 7-5-2011~Nature's own Photoshop This is one of the coolest things I happened to witness from my back deck. I looked outside through our sliding door which is covered in reflective window tint. I found that the colors were even better with my polarized lens.
