Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds
Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds or Palace of the Breeze), Jaipur (Pink city), Rajasthan, India.
It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Usta in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. Its unique five-storey exterior is also akin to the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas that are decorated with intricate lattice work. The original intention of the lattice was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen, since they had to observe strict "purdah" (face cover).
Built of red and pink sandstone, the palace is situated on the main thoroughfare in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre. It forms part of the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana or women's chambers, the chambers of the harem. It is particularly striking when viewed early in the morning, lit with the golden light of sunrise. (source: wikipedia)
The Hawa Mahal is the most photographed monument in the Pink City (Jaipur).
I got there just in time as the sun was setting (top left side of the image). I wanted to shoot the Hawa Mahal during the blue hour and was searching for a higher location as the streets were crowded. I found a balcony on top of a shop and asked the shop keeper if i could take a picture from there. he agreed but charged me 100 rupees. (2 dollars). I think that was money well spent as i was happy with the result.
The Only Open K-Mart Left in Saginaw 3
"Garden Shop" sign, the entrance to the indoor garden center and the outdoor garden center sans the plants. What do you expect? It's fall time in Michigan when I snapped this photo!
For the record, there were 4 K-Marts in the Saginaw area but the one pictured is still operating. One is the present day Horizon's Conference Center. Another is abandoned on Bay Road in Saginaw. The third shuttered K-Mart closed in 2004-2005 and was part of the now demolished Fort Saginaw Mall in Saginaw (technically Buena Vista Township).
