Another Bonbeach photo. Sorry, but there hasn't been much opportunity to do other things. The weather is so extraordinary and unpredictable that when the sun shines, however briefly, we pack the children up and head to the beach!
I thought I'd try something a little different with the composition. The end result is unfortunately not great since the family are mere dots near the horizon but I do like the sense of solitude (although the beach was far from empty).
Polarising filter is responsible, as always, for bringing out the best in the colour. Otherwise it's straight out of the camera, with minor tweak to adjust the white balance.

The original image size is 3776 x 2520 pixel at 180 dpi, this view is 842 x1068 pixel at 180 dpi. I cut this out at of a screen view at 'actual pixel ' zoom. The photo was taken with a polarising filter. The EXIF header states ISO 80-shutter 1/400th s f3.2 focal length 5.10mm.

Aug 21 Reflections in Oil
We have our motorcycle trip planned for tomorrow through Monday, I realized this week that it had been a while since I'd changed the oil, 4,000 miles, in fact. I run Mobil 1 Synthetic, so that is not an inordinate amount of miles on this oil, but I prefer 3k between changes. So I am changing the oil tonight. I got the idea of shooting a reflection off the drain pan while I was on the floor watching the pan fill. I set up the camera on the tripod and gave it a whirl. It is kind of a cheap Filter (so to speak). There is still some oil dripping at a rate of once every 2 seconds or so, for this 5 second exposure, there were two drips. I planned this trip months ago, and we just came off two weeks of summer weather, as I type this, I am listening to the grand daddy of thunderstorms approaching. It is supposed to rain through into the morning and we are supposed to leave bright and early tomorrow. Once this clears up, we have the beginnings of Hurricane Bill to contend with. We're going though, there's no changing plans at this point. There is a 650 mile trip through 4 states on the plan. We have no firm plans though, no motels booked, we will play our stops by ear. I am introducing my 11 year old to getting out on the open road and riding. We've got the gear, we've got the time, oh yeah, I gotta go pack. Oh, and put some oil in the bike!

Infrared - Winter Wind in Cocos Palm
Following the demise of my trusty but troubled S5600, I manage to get a Finepix S5800 at an excellent ebay price. Once modded with a piece of optical glass in place of the hot-mirror, I took this pic as the first test shot. FUJI S5800, f=5.0, exp 1/60, iso=100 and a 680nm filter...and of course a little channel swapping with Photoshop. The 680nm filter seems to leave enough residual colour to allow a little tweaking.

Leeds - Brewery Wharf & The Oracle
I managed to do a bit of landscape work this week on the walk between our office in Leeds and the hotel in the centre of town. First time I've had a chance to use my replacement Big Stopper, after the last one mercilessly smashed when I drowned the camera last October!
My favourite place for a burger whenever I stay in Leeds is the Oracle on the right. Top notch in there. Never lets me down!
It looks HDR, but it isn't. It pretty much came out of the camera like this, just had to add a small amount of clarity and saturation.

Lambda vs MAP
Here is some data depicting the measured lambda versus the absolute MAP for my Honda B20. The lambda was measured using an AEM WBO2 gauge and the RS232 output was logged by my ECU. The MAP is also logged by my ECU at about 6.5 Hz. The logging occurs whenever the MAP and RPM exceed the chosen thresholds, in this case 0.8 BAR and 3,000 rpm. There are pics of my custom ECU elsewhere on this site.
Quite a bit of data scatter isn't there? Some of it is due to transients like letting off the throttle. I've investigated electrical interference of the WBO2 gauge and have provided good separation from the ignition and capacitive decoupling of the input power. Not a big help. It may be that the wideband sensor just isn't that consistent in a noisy (pressure, vibration, electrical) environment. It may also reflect a true variation in combustion results. I will say that the engine runs flawlessly and the spark plugs read equally from cylinder to cylinder.
UPDATE:
1. The AEM WBO2 gauge's heater driver causes ringing in the cabling and this interferes with the lambda measurement. Adding a snubber circuit (diode only, no RC worked best) in the cabling near the gauge to suppress the ringing and inductive overshoot made a substantial improvement. The inductance is from the cable (about 200 nH per foot). Apparently the AEM engineers didn't recognize this and just filtered the crap out of the displayed output. The RS232 serial data output apparently is not filtered and the parsed data is noisy. AEM, you're welcome.
2. The AEM heater control loop oscillates at about 1 Hz (you can see the pulse width variation with an oscilloscope). This results in an unstable sensor temperature and may account for some of the data scatter.
3. The Bosch lambda sensor is sensitive to vibration. Reducing the amount of engine vibration coupled into the sensor reduces the noise in the lambda data.
BTW, the cable ringing is the likely source of radio noise some folks have experienced with the AEM gauge. The heater driver supplies a 5 KHz pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage into the 3.3 ohm heater. The 1 MHz inductive ringing occurs when the driver switches off each PWM cycle. Another path for interference is the ground path. Don't connect the AEM gauge's ground in the path of the radio's ground. The AEM gauge's ground current includes the 4 amp PWM heater current.
Trying to predict the effect of variable sample rate sine wave synthesis
I've been exploring variable sample rate (where the voltage step is constant) and also base 3 digital to analog conversion. Combining the two techniques gives me an interesting way of implementing a PIC microcontroller based AX25 modem using just 3 output pins rather than the normal 4. My limitation has been PIC processor speed to keep up with the rapid ramping needed as the signal crosses 0. I could do it, with some high frequency spikes from the switching, but I'd need to up the PIC's clock frequency to its full 32MHz, or I start skipping samples.
This graph is a prediction for a 4 bit binary converter using variable sample rate. The circles penned in are the actual sample points that the software is trying to follow. It is moving half a sample early to try to reduce error and therefore noise.
If the noise amplitude is taken as the maximum deviation from the target sine then I need to avoid skipping samples and try to keep close. A fixed sample rate solution could also achieve this quite well as long as the sample rate is fast enough to keep up with the fast ramping. Then the maximum error will be equal to half of the converter's resolution. The resolution of this 4 bit converter is -24dB.
The frequency content of the noise will vary here as the sample rate varies. In fact I'm frequency modulating the sample signal (d/dt of sin(t) is cos(t)), so I think I should expect the noise signal to occupy an FM type spectrum with extra harmonics from the step functions. Mix in any non-linearities in the system and that could become problematic!
Thinking of this, the better solution may be a fixed sample rate that is fast enough not to allow the noise amplitude to become too large as the waveform ramps quickly crossing zero. (That would be effectively amplitude modulating the noise). The fixed sample rate does also have the advantage of simpler code and less resource usage on the microcontroller, and noise is easy to filter in the analogue stage.
Maybe this is why we don't see variable sample rate synthesis. Searching for commercial direct synthesis solutions it looks like effort has been spent achieving very fast fixed sample rates.

Emergent patterns on Stiðjafjall

The flat tops of the grooves look like they have been shoveled. But there has not been any heavy machinery up there. My guess is that tiny grooves in a generally smooth surface have been filled with wet snow, while the storms blew the sleet off the ridges. Then the grooves were slightly expanded when the water in the sleet froze. Repeat.
The grooves run downhill, fitting the theories of Self-Organization of Sorted
Patterned Ground by Kessler and Werner (SCIENCE VOL 299 17 JANUARY 2003) This being on a mountain top, the grooves can't have been made by running water. Anyway - grooves made by water tend to unite as they run downhill, while these stay parallel.
An amazing amount of naked soil for a summit. I guess it have been protected by grass until quite recently, and will soon be washed away. (Maybe I just get paranoid by reading Collapse by Jared Diamond.)

Slow Sand Filters
- SLOW SAND FILTERS are large shallow sand beds through which water flows far more slowly than through a depth filter. They combine filtration with biological purification of water, usually for public supply, though the process is no longer economical to install.
- Slow sand filters are used in water purification for treating raw water to produce a potable product. They are typically 1 to 2 metres deep, can be rectangular or cylindrical in cross section and are used primarily to treat surface water.
- (Slow sand filter) A filter which removes suspended solids from raw water by passing it through a sand bed, where the solids collect as a surface mat and in the sand interstices. Filtration rates are in the order of 2 - 51/m2/min.

Unicel Cartridge Filters

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008, there was an Act 250 hearing in Barton on the cell towers that Verizon wants to install in Barton. Vince Illuzi (R State Senator of Essex / Orleans counties) wants the antennas put on his land (he bought the land that the Unicel tower on Barton Mountain is on in 2007). Illuzi was granted party status on this issue, so now he can appeal the Commission's ruling if they decide to allow the Verizon plan.
In order for Verizon to use the Unicel tower on Barton Mountain, Verizon says they would need to dismantle the Unicel tower and construct one up to 150 feet high. The present Unicel tower is only 55 feet high and was nearly completely hidden by trees. You had to look really hard to see it when foliage is out.
It was evident to me listening to Mr. Illuzi's testimony at the hearing, that he has little understanding of the importance of this ridge line. The cliffs under the Unicel tower are where I have frequently heard bobcats. My daughter and I have seen and photographed peregrine falcons. In fact, Amelia saw a falcon hunt and grab a bird in the air. Do the falcons nest on the cliffs? No study has been made.
Two days ago, two days after the hearing, on Thursday, August 21, I came home from school to see this awful mess on Barton Mountain. The land around the Unicel tower, Illuzi's land, was clearcut. It was, in fact, slashed, as can be seen more dramatically from I-91 near Glover.
In the over twenty years that I have watched this mountain and the six years that I have lived here, I have never seen such destruction.
What's up, Mr. Illuzi? Why did this happen?? After listening to you on Tuesday night, I am sure you will have some sort of explanation.
