Slow Sand Filters
- SLOW SAND FILTERS are large shallow sand beds through which water flows far more slowly than through a depth filter. They combine filtration with biological purification of water, usually for public supply, though the process is no longer economical to install.
- Slow sand filters are used in water purification for treating raw water to produce a potable product. They are typically 1 to 2 metres deep, can be rectangular or cylindrical in cross section and are used primarily to treat surface water.
- (Slow sand filter) A filter which removes suspended solids from raw water by passing it through a sand bed, where the solids collect as a surface mat and in the sand interstices. Filtration rates are in the order of 2 - 51/m2/min.
