"Important Piece of Equipment"

This is what is known as a "butterfly valve".
"In nuclear power plants, butterfly valves are normally used in low pressure and low temperature
water systems, and in containment purge and venting systems"

A malfunctioning safety relief valve at the Japanese nuclear reactor caused an increase in reactor pressure and hindered injection of coolant back into the reactor.

"Sandchime"

The engine being run for the first time after restoration by volunteers.
Video by Kailey Ross.
Grab Dredger “Sandchime” and her engine, was built by William Simon & Co's, Renfrew, for the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries (Scotland).
Yard No. 794. She was launched 14/03/1952Fleet No. 303091
190 ton, 105ft long, 24ft 6in beam, draught 8ft 9in.
Propulsion by a triple expansion steam engine of some 12 tons weight, producing 234 HP.
Max speed 6.5 knot.
She operated around Scottish coasts, ports & harbours until 1972.( Department of Agriculture & Fisheries Scotland)

Engine Restoration -
The engine, a three cylinder triple expansion, was purchased using a grant.
The restoration was undertaken by a group of volunteers at the Scottish Maritime Museum Irvine Scotland. Work started in April 2010. This was the first triple expansion engine undertaken for restoration by the volunteer group.
The “Sandchime” engine is missing 3 top cylinder relief valves, hand turning gear, 4 oiler pipes, 6 cocks from the sea water cooling rail, and 5 bearing cooling spouts.
During the removal of asbestos from the engine, 3 cladding panels and 4 oil pipes went astray. The cladding panels shall be made by the volunteers.
As the Turning Gear drive was missing a “Heath Robinson” version was installed. This comprised of a crucifix made from strap steel bolted to the crank shaft flange. An eye bolt secured to the top of the engine from which a ¼ ton chain block was suspended, the hook of the block was engaged in “bow shackles” fitted at the ends of the crucifix. This allowed the engine to be turned as each part was replaced ensuring a free engine at every stage of the rebuild.
The three Pistons and the HP piston valve were seized. The cylinder covers had to be removed. An attempt was made to pull the middle piston using 30 ton jacks, this failed.
The Connecting rods, X heads, big ends and the Stephenson linkage from the HP piston valve were removed. The cylinders then had easing oil poured in and left to soak the pistons were eventually freed with a combination of jacking from the top and chain blocks from the bottom.
The application of heat from a gas torch was required to free the HP piston valve.
Because of this, the ensuing work and restoration extended the project by about 6 months.
The first major part of the restoration was the pump unit. Air pump, 2 auxiliary positive displacement plunger pumps ,associated valves, air bottles and pipework.
The pump unit was the last major component to be replaced as work could not easily be carried out on the LP rods, X head and valve linkage when it was in place. The pump unit weighs approx ½ ton.
After the HP piston valve and pistons was freed (HP valve removed completely) work was mainly stripping, cleaning, recording and reassembly.
There are 6 Mechanical steam glands, (one to each piston and valve rod) These were in poor condition with the compression springs mainly corroded away. A source was found locally who manufactured the springs for us at a reasonable cost. (Irvine Spring Co.). There are 20 springs to each set of packing. The packing was manufactured by “ The United States Metallic Packing Co. Ltd.” Bradford.
To facilitate the refitting of the valve rod steam glands the Stephenson linkage and guide bush support brackets were removed on all 3 valves.
The Crank Shaft was lifted out and the main bearings scraped and cleaned (5 of)
Replacement of the X heads, connecting rods, Stephenson linkage and eccentrics for the valves was carried out HP to LP.
The heavy lifts were the crank shaft, cylinder covers, (especially the LP) and the pump unit (comprising Air Pump, Auxiliary Bilge Pump, Auxiliary Feed Pump), these were remounted as one unit.
It should be noted that the lifting gear available to the volunteers is an “A” Frame with a ½ ton chain block attached, and a 2 ton engine lifter. As the engine lifter has a max height of 6 feet and the “A” frame just clears the top of the engine, ingenuity was at the fore.
Stripping the old Paint and rust from the engine was progressive, i.e. Carried out as parts were removed. The engine being a triple expansion and quite small is very “busy” if the painting had been left to the end of the refit the same effect could not have been achieved.
When the engine arrived in the “Linthouse” it was painted red, white and blue, one would assume at some time there was a patriotic engine keeper. On stripping the pumps it was found the original colour was cream. “Champagne”. A & L Paints of Kilmarnock matched the paint chips to a British Standard. The base was black.
The numerous Valves and Cocks were stripped, cleaned, where necessary repacked / jointed and replaced.
The main steam inlet valve was fully refitted and shot blasted of site. It should be noted that the steam inlet valve has an integral throttle valve (butterfly valve). This allows the speed of the engine to be controlled while the inlet valve is fully open (prevents “wire drawing” of

1909 Reading-Standard

1909 Reading-Standard

Reading Standard (1903-1923) motorcycles were often advertised as "R-S" motorcycles. They were manufactured in a facility on River Street in Reading, Pennsylvania.

1903 — The Reading Standard brand first appeared. Those first bikes were basically Indian clones with Thor engines. They put out more motorcycles than Harley-Davidson and Indian.

1906 — They started building their own one-cylinder engines. These were the first flathead motorcycle engines offered by an American manufacturer. The company slogan "Built and Tested in the Mountains" was adopted when a Reading Standard motorcycle was the first motorized vehicle to climb Pike's Peak.

1907 — Reading Standard began racing. That same year they won their first 1,000-mile endurance race.

1908 — The first Reading Standard V-twin came out in the 1908 models. The first V-twins had conventional F-head configurations — overhead intake valve and side exhaust valve. What was really weird was the valve positions: the front cylinder had the valves on the left side, while the rear cylinder had the valves on the right side. These engines had 722 cc (44 cubic inches) displacement.

1910 — Reading Standard got out of the racing business and began to direct their attention to retail sales.

1913 — I've been unable to determine exactly what year the changes took place, but by 1913 the engines had grown to 990 cc (60 cubic inches). The bigger V-twins were flatheads. Some of the later models displaced 1180 cc (72 cubic inches).

1914 — Business was starting to go downhill.

1922 — Reading Standard sold out to the Cleveland Motorcycle Company.

1923 — Cleveland put out a 1923 Reading Standard as a low-price alternative to their own motorcycles.

1924 — The Cleveland Motorcycle Company itself went up for sale and the Reading Standard name disappeared forever.

Passing through RBW this week 5.

Very little input from RBW here. This now preserved Leyland Tiger had been rescued from the yard of another paintshop. As anything motorised will do, it let it's owner down at the most inconvenient of times after generally being reliable up to that point. When It had been finished, it flatly refused to move out of the booth and only did so with the help of two other operators. Once clear, and in the yard, that's where it stayed. The fault was traced to a porous air tank which we were able to patch to enable it's return to our premises where a more thorough repair could be undertaken. After repairing said tank, a diaphragm in a pressure relief valve then failed! The picture was taken as it was positioned in the road prior to departure, the owner having by now fitted his own vinyls . SUX 476X was once a member of the famous Bassett's of Tittensor (Staffs) fleet, though arriving from Britannia of Telford still serviceable in a freshly applied coat of their blue, never actually received fleet livery as seen here... until now.

My Cardiac Surgery - News Update

First Visit To My Heart Surgeon to see if I am a candidate for a Mitral Valve repair operation, and to find out what's inolved.

Update: I can have the heart surgery to repair my very leaky Mitral Valve in as little as two weeks. However, ny family are recommending doing it after school graduations and performances so they can help during my post-op recovery.

That makes sense. Many friends are telling us that the recovery period is quite long. At services last night, a member of my Shul (his wife's wedding gown is in the Jewish Museum set) said it took him a year to recover from the same surgery.

Miss Cecily, Raf, and I will be attending a one hour class today at Carondelet Heart And Vascular Institute about the operation, pre, during, and post.

Close-up of Mitral Valve Prolapse (Click-Murmer Syndrome) The ultrasound tests showed that my mitral valve prolapse is getting worse. The valve leaks "A LOT" of blood.

My Cardiologist asked about my exercising. I said i can't even walk a few blocks with others without getting exhausted. He said this leakage is why that happens. After the surgery to repair the valve, i will be able to really exercise and not get so tired!! He said "It will change your life!" I am definitely looking forward to that!

30th of June, 2010. 1:55am.

I really wish I could come up with a better title for this. Although why bother? The pic speaks for itself.

It's the logo for Valve's game content delivery service, Steam, made up of Hair Accessories. Didn't see that kind of stuff coming from me, did you?

I was just loitering around in the bathroom and I stared at these things and all of a sudden, I had to assemble them like this and take a picture. Take what will.

To all Steam/Valve fans and especially to Valve employees who manage to see this, spare some mercy okay? ;)

TOILET FILL VALVE. TOILET FILL

Toilet fill valve. Quick shut off valve.

Toilet Fill Valve

toilet fill valve

    fill valve
  • An electro-mechanical device that opens a valve to allow water to flow. The electric current causes a magnetic field to develop in the solenoid coil which in turn then moves a metallic plunger. The plunger is attached to a diaphragm which opens the valve.

  • The fill valve is located in a commode water tank. It is a liquid level-actuated valve that regulates the amount of water dispersed from the tank to the bowl.

  • (Fill Valves) A location on the tube through which you can inflate or deflate the tube. These valves are spring loaded to close and contain the air inside the tubes. The valve can also be turned to an “OPEN” position to quickly evacuate the tube of air when preparing to transport the boat.

3 Ballcocks just hanging?

3 Ballcocks just hanging?

A plastic blue ballcock or float Valve is usually a mechanism for filling water tanks, such as those found in flush toilets, while avoiding overflow.

The toilet, though not one of the more glamorous of home fixtures, is designed to do a very specific job—to carry away waste and prevent sewer gasses from entering the residence, and unless something goes wrong, it handles its job adroitly. The mechanism was invented by Thomas Crapper and is used ingeniously here, hung up ornately as a shop sign to advertise and be a representation indicative of the trade of the shopkeeper; our new local plumbers on Bouverie Road West.

1915 Packard Hood Ornament

1915 Packard Hood Ornament

The sales of the Clipper series were very successful, outselling Cadillac and LaSalle. The vehicles were stylish, durable, and elegant. The body of the vehicle had been designed by Howard 'Dutch' Darrin and sat atop the 120 chassis. The Packard 120 was the company's first sub-$1000 car. It was aimed at stimulating sales and increasing production. The sixteen valve eight-cylinder engine powering the Clipper was capable of producing 125 horsepower, a rather high figure at the time. The modern body, stylish interior, excellent performance, and Packard quality made the Clipper Series very desirable.

Sometimes I forget just how capable the macro function is on this thing.
