S.K.O. (Schuyler, Knobloch and Overstreet) and S.K.B Schuyler, Knobloch, Bickhardt)

S-K-O, originally known as Schuyler, Knobloch and Overstreet, was an American country music group composed of Thom Schuyler, Fred Knobloch and Paul Overstreet. The original lineup recorded one album for MTM Records and charted three country hits, including the Number One "Baby's Got a New Baby". After Overstreet departed in 1987 for a solo career, he was replaced with Craig Bickhardt, and the group was renamed S-K-B. S-K-B released one album and four singles before disbanding in 1989

Songs You Know by Heart: Jimmy Buffett's Greatest Hit(s) is the 18th album and the first greatest hits compilation by American popular music singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett. It was released in January 1985 as MCA 5633. The parenthetical "s" in the subtitle alludes to the status at the time of "Margaritaville" as Buffett's single large chart hit.

Despite its 1985 release date, the album only includes songs from 1973 to 1979. Aside of 1976's Havańa Daydreamin', this compilation includes at least one song from every album released between 1973 and 1979. It includes all of "The Big 8" songs that Buffett has played at almost all of his concerts.

Phil Vassar - Discography

Phil Vassar (born May 28, 1964 in Lynchburg, Virginia) is an American country music artist. Vassar made his debut on the country music scene in the late 1990s, co-writing singles for several country artists, including Tim McGraw ("For a Little While", "My Next Thirty Years"), Jo Dee Messina ("Bye, Bye", "I'm Alright"), Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo"), and Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money"). In 1999, he was named by American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) as Country Songwriter of the Year.

Later that same year, Vassar was signed to Arista Nashville as a recording artist. His debut album, Phil Vassar, was released in early 2000; it produced five hit singles on the U.S. Billboard country singles charts and was certified gold in the United States. He followed it in 2002 with American Child, Shaken Not Stirred in 2004, and finally Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 in 2006 before Vassar left the label for Universal South Records. His first album for that label, Prayer of a Common Man, was released in early 2008. He has charted nineteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including two Number Ones: 2000's "Just Another Day in Paradise" and 2004's "In a Real Love".

Judy Rodman (born May 23, 1951, in Riverside, California) is an American Country Music Singer. In the mid-80s, she was a successful country music singer, making all the way to number one on the country charts in 1986 with the song "Until I Met You." She also won the Academy of Country Music's "Top New Female Vocalist" award in 1985.

Today, Rodman is a singer, songwriter, producer and vocal instructor in Nashville, Tennessee. Ola Belle Reed - Rising Sun Melodies (2010)

Ola Belle Campbell Reed (August 18, 1916 – August 16, 2002) was an American folk singer, songwriter and banjo player. Born in Lansing, North Carolina, Reed's songs often speak of Appalachian life and traditions. Her best known songs have been recorded by mainstream bluegrass and country artists. High on a Mountain, has been recorded by Del McCoury, Tim O'Brien, and Marty Stuart. I've Endured, has been recorded by Del McCoury as well as Tim O'Brien. The annual Ola Belle Reed Music Festival in Lansing, NC celebrates her life and music.

In 1986, Reed was awarded an NEA National Heritage Fellowship.

Lisa Brokop - Undeniable 2000

The following is a detailed discography for Canadian country singer Lisa Brokop. In 1991, Brokop issued her debut album, My Love, on the independent label Libre Records in Canada. It was in 1994, Brokop signed with Patriot Records, a label owned by Liberty Records and released her second album Every Little Girl's Dream in both Canada and the United States. The album was certified Gold by the CRIA, for sales of 50,000 copies, in October 1995. Lisa Brokop followed in 1996 on Captiol Nashville, the album's commercial failure in both Canada and U.S. forced Brokop and Capitol to part ways.

In 1998, Brokop signed with Columbia Records and released the Canadian only release, When You Get to Be You. The album was scheduled for release in the United States, but due to all singles failing at radio, the album was never released. Undeniable, was issued in 2000 on the independent Cosmo Records label. Five years after the release of her previous album, Brokop returned with Hey, Do You Know Me released in 2005 on Curb Records in Canada. The album was planned to be Brokop's first album since 1996 to be issued in the United States, but was not released due to the album's singles not charting. Brokop's most recent album, Beautiful Tragedy, was issued in 2008.

The Master and Margarita - Igor Kornelyuk OST 2010

Master and Margarita (2005) is a Menippean film based on the eponymous book by Mikhail A. Bulgakov. Set in Moscow under Stalin and in Jerusalem under Pilate, it has several story-lines where history, religion and politics are intertwined. The sacrifices of Master (Galibin), a talented author of a manuscript about the biblical Pontius Pilate, and Master's muse - Margarita (Kovalchuk), are paralleled by the biblical story of Ieshua in Ierushalaim, and the deceit of the cowardly ambiguous Pilate (Lavrov), whose character alludes to a Soviet leader. The reality is distorted by Satan Woland (Basilashvili), and his lieutenants, who are manipulating public events and people's lives by pushing the buttons of human weaknesses and sins. Margarita taps into Woland's power, trying to save Master. The character of Master is autobiographical, burning of his manuscript alludes to what Bulgakov himself did under threats from the Soviet authorities.

Crystal Gayle (born January 9, 1951) is an American country singer best known for a series of country-pop crossover hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including the Grammy Award-winning, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." She accumulated 18 No. 1 country hits during the 1970s and 1980s. She is also famous for her nearly floor-length hair and was voted one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world in 1983. She is the sister of singer Loretta Lynn (who is 19 years her senior) and a distant cousin of singer Patty Loveless. Crystal Gayle has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, near Loretta Lynn's star. Steve Winwood - Revolutions: The Very Best Of Steve Winwood [Deluxe Edition] [Box set] 2010

Winwood was just a teenager when he rocketed into the international spotlight as the prodigious singer of the Spencer Davis Group (which also featured his brother Muff on bass). The blues and R&B-influenced rock of “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m a Man” stood among the leading hits at the peak of the British Invasion, Winwood’s singing drawing comparisons to that of his idol Ray Charles - despite his tender age. Looking for a wider artistic palette, in 1967 he headed to the countryside with friends Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason, forging the collective spirit into Traffic, producing some of the most inventive and durable works of the psychedelic-tinged late-”60s.

In 1969 he and Clapton, having worked together briefly in the short-lived Powerhouse project, formed Blind Faith with Clapton’s Cream-mate, drummer Ginger Baker, and bass player Rick Grech, though the “supergroup” lasted just one acclaimed album and tour. Intending to mix English folk styles along with jazz and rock, Winwood started work on what was meant as his first solo album, but ultimately enlisted Capaldi and Wood in a reconvened Traffic for the landmark John Barleycorn Must Die album. An expanded Traffic lineup (including African percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah) went on to make two of the most arresting albums of the early ’70s in The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and Shoot Out At the Fantasy Factory, expanding on the jazz and world music elements. A scaled-back line-up brought the Traffic era to a close with 1974’s When the Eagle Flies. With 1977’s Steve Winwood, a rich solo career launched in earnest. Arc of a Diver (1980) featured the hit “While You See a Chance”, and subsequent solo albums Talking Back to the Night (1982), Back in the High Life (1986), and Roll With It (1988) produced era-defining songs including “Valerie,” “Higher Love,” “Back in the High Life,” and “Roll With It."

Following 1990’s Refugees of the Heart, Winwood and Capaldi reunited as Traffic for the 1994 Far From Home album and tour, the latter documented in the CD/DVD release The Last Great Traffic Jam. In 1997, Winwood teamed with producer Narada Michael Walden for Junction 7, and then the critically acclaimed About Time saw Winwood returning to the free-flowing spirit of some of his most enduring music. The 2008 follow up titled Nine Lives saw Winwood gain one of his highest billboard chart entries.

Along the way, Winwood has also collaborated with and accompanied musicians from around the globe, including Jimi Hendrix (Electric Ladyland), Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, James Brown, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Toots & the Maytals, Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, salsa greats Tito Puente and the Fania All Stars, Japanese innovator Stomu Yamashta and African percussionist Remi Kabaka, just to name a handful of dozens.

With his blend of 50's rock & roll, pop and traditional country, Steve Holy has crafted a unique sound that has won fans over across the nation. Refusing to be labeled musically and sticking to his country roots, Steve sites country greats Charlie Rich, Mickey Gilley and John Conlee as his influences, but is quick to add that Elvis, Sam Cooke, and a variety of Doo-Wop bands play a major role in his vocal style and on-stage persona.

"I really don't want to be 'labeled'. The majority of my influences are from the traditional country genre, but I feel a connection to the music made in the 50's and 60's. My heart is there in that style of music. It was really heartfelt back then and I'm into the simplicity of the music. It's how I want to make music- simply heartfelt."

Steve's engaging stage performance alone has created a loyal following. Although, his primary objective is to connect with them on an up-close and personal basis, he naturally and unconsciously dazzles fans and listeners alike, capturing them immediately. Steve Holy is charming, charismatic and captivating.

In 1997, Steve signed with Curb Records. He launched his debut album Blue Moon in October 2000. The initial offering, dubbed "5090" by Rack Clark of Dick Clark Productions for its tribute to both the 1950's and 1990's era, included a swing-driven single entitled "Don't Make Me Beg" which was released as Steve's debut single from the album to set his course in motion.

Steve has enjoyed incredible success to jump-start his musical career. His second single from the album, "Blue Moon," featuring more traditional country sounds was released in April 2000 and climbed all the way to Number 19 on the charts. His third single, "The Hunger," delivered a pop-folk feel and made it to Number 20; and just eighteen months after the release of the album, Steve's fourth single "Good Morning

Beautiful," for which he is most widely recognized, charted at Number 1 for five straight weeks in 2002. The single was also featured in the Jennifer Lopez movie Angel Eyes.

Steve's long awaited 2nd CD, "Brand New Girlfriend" was released August 8, 2006. The album debut at number two on the country charts. Singles from this CD included "Brand New Girlfriend," "Come On Rain," "Men Buy The Drinks," and his latest single "Baby Don't Go".

Steve earned his second number one single with "Brand New Girlfriend." This song was also the number one dance song for 2006.

The Song "Good Morning Beautiful" made it to Billboard’s Top Country Songs of the decade 1999-2009 at number 10.

Paul & Barry Ryan - The Singles (1998)

Barry along with his brother, Paul, who were both identical twin sons of Marion Ryan, a fifties pop singer, were signed by Decca in 1965. With neat long hair and carefully selected fashionable clothes they were skillfully marketed by Decca. In 1968, Barry Ryan went solo and Paul took to songwriting. An early result of this new partnership was "Eloise", a stunning single with its melodramatic vocal style and heavily orchestrated backing. This was certainly Barry's magnum opus and he soldiered on for several years after without achieving the same heights again.

In 1986 the airwaves were filled with the dramatic sound of "Eloise" performed by former punk idols The Damned. The sheer power and scale of this track written 18 years previously was there for all to hear. "Eloise" was one of many classic songs written by Paul Ryan, but it was his brother Barry who performed on the original version.

Twins Barry and Paul were born on 24 October 1948 in Leeds, England. Their mother was singing star of the 50s Marion Ryan and step-father - show business impresario Harold Davidson. They grew up using their real surname Sapherson; by the time of their fifteenth birthday the twins had entered show business and taken their mother's name - Ryan. Under the full glare of media publicity they released their first single "Don't Bring Me Your Heartaches" which reached the UK top twenty. Follow-up singles all fared well and under the direction of top writer and arranger Les Reed, they filled a niche left vacant by UK acts aiming at the US market.

The Ryans were groomed for stardom. Top designers ensured their photogenic looks were seen in all the pop papers but the constant tours and TV appearances were starting to have an effect on Paul who suffered a near-nervous breakdown. After a brief lull in chart action the pair decided to split in 1968. This took the pressure off Paul who could now spend more time writing. Barry signed to MGM Records and the single "Eloise" became the label's first release. Promoted with one of the first full videos, this dramatic, powerful song was an instant smash, selling 3 million copies and reaching number 1 in six countries.

his unusual arrangement of one brother writing for another certainly worked and with further hits "Love Is Love", "The Hunt" and "Kitsch". Barry ended the 60s as one of the top pop performers in Europe, despite never playing a solo concert outside the UK. Paul was also having huge success as a writer, having written "I Will Drink The Wine" for Frank Sinatra. Sadly, Paul died of cancer in 1992, aged only 44.

Gordon Lightfoot - Demos 1964 - 1966

This is the fourth edition of Beehive Candy's 'rarities and collectors items' where we feature very listenable but hardly audiophile standard recordings. On this occasion we have Gordon Lightfoot and a collection of demo recordings that have circulated under the title 'Warner 7 Art Demos, and feature material from 1964 - 1966.

Despite the fact that most of Gordon Lightfoot's major and international success came in the 1970's He was gaining attention in Canada from the early part of the 1960's.

In 1962, he released two singles that were local hits in Toronto and received some airplay elsewhere in Canada as well. "(Remember Me) I'm the One" reached number 3 on CHUM radio in Toronto in July 1962 and was also a top 20 hit on Montreal's CKGM, then a very influential Canadian Top 40 radio station. The follow-up single was "Negotiations"/"It's Too Late, He Wins"; it reached number 27 on CHUM in December. He also sang with Terry Whelan in a duo called the Two-Tones. They recorded a live album that was released in 1962 called Two-Tones at the Village Corner.

In 1963, Lightfoot travelled to Europe. In the United Kingdom he hosted, for one year, BBC TV's Country and Western Show. In 1964 Lightfoot returned to Canada; he appeared at the Mariposa Folk Festival. During this time he began to develop a reputation as a songwriter. Ian and Sylvia Tyson recorded "Early Mornin' Rain" and "For Lovin' Me"; a year later both songs were recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary.

In 1965, Lightfoot signed a management contract with Albert Grossman, who also represented Bob Dylan. That same year, he signed a recording contract with United Artists and released his own version of "I'm Not Saying" as a single. Appearances at the Newport Folk Festival, the Tonight Show, and New York's Town Hall increased his following and his reputation. In 1966, he released his debut album Lightfoot!, which brought him increased recognition as both a singer and a songwriter. It featured many now-famous songs, including "For Lovin' Me," "Early Mornin' Rain," "Steel Rail Blues," and "Ribbon of Darkness." On the strength of the Lightfoot! album, which mixed Canadian and universal themes, Lightfoot became one of the first Canadian singers to achieve real stardom in his own country without having to move to the United States.

Ray Materick - Life & Times BoxSet 2003

Ray Materick is a singer/songwriter born in Brantford, Ontario. He comes by his career honestly: His father played saxophone, trumpet, and clarinet n his own dance band during the 1940's and 1950's before becoming an ordained evangelical preacher in the 1960's. Materick's brothers introduced him to Rock 'N' Roll music in the form of Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly. His inspiration to write his own material came from The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and Gordon Lightfoot.

In 1972 Materick signed with one of Canada's first truly independent labels, Kanata Records, to release his first solo album, 'Sidestreets', produced by David Bird. The gritty, gravelly voiced and lyrically brilliant album was greeted as a masterpiece by critics.

By 1974 Materick was signed to WEA Canada by Gary Muth for the new Asylum label in the U.S. His first album release would be 'Neon Rain', produced by Eugene Martynec, and contained the hit single "Linda Put The Coffee On". Legendary east coaster Stan Rogers would note Materick's considerable talent as a songwriter by recording his version of Materick's "The Holiday Bar And Grill Cafe".

1975's 'Best Friend Overnight', produced by Don Potter, featured pedal steel and mandolin courtesy of a very young Daniel Lanois. Similarly, Lanois also made significant contributions to Materick's 1976 album 'Midnight Matinee' (also produced by Don Potter). Materick's band was solidifying as well with noted contributions by Ed Roth (keyboards), Bill Cymbala (drums), and Bob Doidge (bass). This line-up would be the foundation for Materick's 1978 outting, 'Fever In Rio', along with help from Jack Pedler (drums), Michael Zweig (guitar), Shirley Eikhard (harmony vocals), Terry Brumhall (bass) and Glen Foster (guitar). This cycle of albums all won Materick critical praise.

In the early '80's Materick formed his own record label, Escape Records, and continued touring with his band which featured Lily Sazz (now with The Trailblazers). At this point Materick took a break from his years of road and party life. He began working in an East Toronto woodworking shop where he remained for nearly 8 years or so. Through a program of self-discovery Materick began writing songs again.

Materick now lives in Hamilton, Ontario, and has been feverishly releasing new product through his own King Kong.com record label (which also serves as the home for seven other singer-songwriters). Materick's prolific resurgence resulted in five solo releases in 2000 -- 'Rough Serenade', 'Melting Pot', 'Man In The Thunderbird', 'Wild World', and 'Sunflowers'; and two solo releases in 2001 -- 'Here At Home' and 'Violent Flood'.

In 2001 Materick released 'The Songwriter' on King Kong Records which was later assimilated into a 2 CD package by Linus Entertainment/Warner Music Canada along with 12 vintage 1970's tracks called 'Life & Times' in 2003.

2006 finds Materick with two more albums under his belt -- 'The Book Of Love' and the two disc set 'Ragged Kingdom'.

Guns N' Roses (sometimes abbreviated as G N' R or GnR) is an American hard rock band. The band formed in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in 1985. Led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose, Jr.), the band has released six studio albums, three EPs, and one live album while going through numerous line-up changes and controversies since its formation. Rose is the only consistent member of Guns N' Roses.

The band has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, including shipments of 43.5 million in the United States. The band's 1987 major label debut album, Appetite for Destruction, has sold in excess of 28 million copies worldwide and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 and is also the highest selling debut album of all time both in the US and worldwide. In addition, the album charted three Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Sweet Child o' Mine" which reached No. 1. The 1991 albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II debuted on the two highest spots on the Billboard 200 and have sold a combined 14 million copies in the United States alone and 35 million worldwide. After over a decade of work and many lineup changes, the band released their follow-up album, Chinese Democracy, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the United States.

The current lineup comprises lead vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarists Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and DJ Ashba, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman and drummer Frank Ferrer.

Guns N' Roses' mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s years have been described by individuals in the music industry as the period in which "they brought forth a hedonistic rebelliousness and revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene, reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones."

And without further ado, it is the only album by former member of "Nero & The Gladiators", "Thomas F. Browne". "Wednesday's Child" released in the summer of 1971 was one of the last albums to be released on the famous Vertigo Record label and features really good folk rock, with help from "Sandy Denny" and a few others greats. David Wiffen

Wiffen subsequently signed to Fantasy Records as a solo artist. In 1971, he released David Wiffen, and had hit singles with "One Step" and "More Often Than Not". The album also contained his most widely-covered song, "Driving Wheel".

Wiffen's second solo studio album, Coast to Coast Fever (United Artists, 1973), was produced by Bruce Cockburn, and Wiffen's musical career appeared to be quite promising. He continued to perform regularly in the 1970s, though found his success diminishing and a consequent source of frustration and depression, compared to the success of contemporaries Bruce Cockburn and Murray McLauchlan. Alcohol abuse compounded the difficulties he was experiencing in his musical career. He eventually ceased performing, choosing to become a limousine driver and later a publicly-funded driver for handicapped persons in Ottawa. Wiffen suffered a serious back injury on the job while moving a wheelchair, which required corrective surgery and impeded any return to performing.

Wiffen's third album, South of Somewhere, was released in 1999, twenty-six years after Coast to Coast Fever. At that time, Wiffen had been sober for ten years and had spent six years in preparation and development for the album's production. The album contained a mix of reworkings of some of his older material, such as "Driving Wheel", plus some new songs. During this period, he returned briefly to performing, but has been inactive for several years. His current circumstances are not publicly known

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Discography

The First Edition (later known as Kenny Rogers and the First Edition) was a country music/rock band stalwart members being Kenny Rogers (vocals & bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums & percussion) and Terry Williams (guitar & vocals). The band formed in 1967, with noted folk musician Mike Settle (guitar and backing vocals) and the operatically trained Thelma Camacho completing the lineup.

The First Edition signed with Reprise Records in the summer of 1967 and first hit big in early 1968 with the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" (US #5). After several hits and misses the group (now billed as "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition") once again hit the top ten in the summer of 1969 with the topical "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (US #6, UK#2).

For the next six years, the First Edition bounced between country, pop and mild psychedelia, enjoying worldwide success.

Jesse Dayton – One For The Dance Halls (2011)

Ernest Tubb & The Texas Troubadors, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Willie Nelson & The Family Band, George Strait and the Ace In The Hole Band, have all played regular shows at the legendary dance hall, the Broken Spoke in Austin , TX, which is what Jesse Dayton has been doing for years. Leading his band every Thursday night and keeping the dance floor full. Such was the inspiration for Jesse’s latest release, "One For The Dance Halls." "One For The Dance Halls" was also inspired by a core group of Austin dancers, who Jesse aptly named the "Solid Chrome Dancers." He had never made a straight ahead top-to-bottom country record that consisted only of shuffles, straight 8’s, ballads and waltzes. He says, "I knew if I could come up with some new material that they loved, I’d be on my way to making a legendary country record that might stand the test of time." Having shared the studio with Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, Willie Nelson and Johnny Bush, Jesse needed no more inspiration than the incredible tunes these dance hall giants had brought before him.

One Horse Blue was a Canadian country music group composed of Gord Maxwell (lead vocals, bass guitar), Larry Pink (keyboards), Michael Shellard (background vocals, guitar, harmonica), Winston Quelch (guitars), and Rocko Vaugeois (drums, background vocals). Formed in 1975 in Drayton Valley, Alberta, the band was active between 1979 and 1980, and again in the 1990s. They charted several singles on the RPM Top Country Tracks charts and recorded four albums before disbanding in 1981.

By 1993, Shelland and Maxwell had reformed the band, with Jim Foster taking over on guitar. This new lineup produced a fourth album, as well as two Number One hits in "Hopeless Love" and "Bringing Back Your Love", both from 1995.

David Wiffen - Coast To Coast Fever 1973

David Wiffen (born March 11, 1942 in Sydenham, London, England) is a Canadian folk music singer-songwriter. Two of his songs, "Driving Wheel" and "More Often Than Not", have become cover standards.

Brought up in South London and Claygate, Surrey, Wiffen first sang with the Kingston upon Thames-based Black Cat Skiffle group. Wiffen moved with his family to Canada at age 16, and became part of the burgeoning folk music scene, initially in Toronto. In 1965, having moved to Vancouver, he was invited to perform at The Bunkhouse club on a live ensemble album. It became Wiffen's first solo album, David Wiffen Live At The Bunkhouse, on the Universal International label, when the other invited musicians failed to show up.

VA - Keep Your Soul: A Tribute To Doug Sahm [2009]

Ten years after his passing, Doug Sahm's family, friends, and followers salute the Texas giant with Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm. Surprise isn't the order of the day -- of all the artists involved, only Afghan Whig/Gutter Twin Greg Dulli could be called unexpected -- but rather a warm evocation of Sahm's spirit and sensibility, how he effortlessly encompassed almost every element of Texan music. By the very nature of a multi-artist tribute, Sahm's wide range is both emphasized and diminished, suggesting that he flitted from style to style instead of how blues, country, Tex-Mex, jazz, and rock & roll all coexisted in his music. Still, as tribute album problems go, this is pretty minor -- after all, what matters is the music, andhttp://www.blog.hr/edit/?SID=a71dd196788b87d74e49775a9fca5357&page=blogeditor Keep Your Soul is pretty rousing in that regard. Bookended by Sir Doug's two best-known songs -- "She's About a Mover," here performed by Little Willie G., the vocalist for Thee Midniters and Malo, supported by Ry Cooder among others; and "Mendocino," performed by Sahm's son Shawn -- this otherwise sidesteps such obvious picks as "Texas Tornado" (or any of his early-'70s recordings for Atlantic for that matter) in favor of a healthy dose of the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados, plus solo tunes from throughout the years. The order of the day isn't reinterpretation, it's celebration, and there are many joyful performances here, highlighted by Los Lobos' relaxed, breezy "It Didn't Even Bring Me Down," Delbert McClinton's easy-rolling "Texas Me," Jimmie Vaughan's glorious slow crawl through "Why, Why, Why," Joe "King" Carrasco's rollicking "Adios Mexico" supported by the Texas Tornados, and those aforementioned bookends. Then again, there are no bad moments here. Whatever stumbles there may be are largely down to a matter of taste -- some might find Dulli's "You Was for Real" too gloomy, the Gourds' "Nuevo Laredo" a little too light and nimble -- but there's no denying that everything here is executed with love and care, faithful to the big, open-hearted soul of Doug Sahm, and you can't ask for a better tribute than that.

Murray McLauchlan, CM (born June 30, 1948) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and harmonica player.

Murray McLauchlan - one of my favorite Canadian artists, after "King Biscuit Boy" that is, with "Murray McLauchlan". This is a very rare PROMO live album recorded at the Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver. Apart from his great songs folks, his personality shines through with his stories and humour between tracks. I know many many of y'all will appreciate this rare PROMO that was ripped from a DJ ONLY copy for Radio CFOX.

Arlen Roth - Toolin' around Woodstock (2008)

February 2008 CD from veteran guitar maestro Arlen Roth, with a selection of rootsy classics drawing from the music of Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Buck Owens, Bob Dylan, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and others.

The record was recorded at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, NY. Levon plays drums on 12 of the 14 tracks. He also sings the lead vocal on 2 of them including an incredible version of "Sweet Little Sixteen" and the Buck Owens chestnut "Cryin' Time." Other guests on the album include Sonny Landreth, Bill Kirchen, Amy Helm, and Arlen's daughter Lexie.

Largo's concept is a heady one: A song cycle based on Antonin Dvorak's "New World Symphony," which was itself inspired by the Czech composer's love for indigenous American music of the early 20th century. But thanks to the songwriting savvy of mastermind Rob Hyman (of the Hooters) and the efforts of such special guests as Joan Osborne, Cyndi Lauper, and Taj Mahal, the concept never weighs down the music. Stylistically, the set ranges from the swamp-rock shuffle of "Disorient Express" to the poignantly soaring power balladry of "An Uncommon Love," with a real highlight coming via "Medallion" (which transposes Springsteen-styled workingman's rock to the life of a Pakistani immigrant cabbie).

Randy Montana – 1,000 Faces – EP 2011

The January issue of Southern Living magazine boasts newcomer Randy Montana as one of five “Best New Artists” in their Best of the South feature on stands now.

“The raspy-voiced Montana, a standout among his ‘I’m more country than you’ peers, breaks the genre’s mold but respects its heritage,” the magazine claims of his full-length album due out later this year.

Additionally, there are several offerings from Montana to check out this week, including his second single “1,000 Faces,” which is one of the most added new singles at country radio. “Faces” is penned by Montana and Tom Douglas and debuts today.

A 3-song EP of the same title, produced by Jay Joyce, is also available now. It consists of the new single, “Assembly Line,” written by Montana and Natalie Hemby and “Last Horse,” written by Montana, his dad Billy and Rodney Clawson, and features Emmylou Harris on harmonies.

Tom Russell has been releasing terrific records without pause since the mid-'70s, and this acoustic, mostly live retrospective package may be the best of the bunch. In fact, after listening to its 17 tracks -- which include duets with Nanci Griffith, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and others -- the only remaining question about Russell is: Why isn't this guy very, very famous? Sure, you can hear lots of influences here -- everyone from Merle Haggard and Buck Owens to Ian Tyson (a sometime collaborator) and Bob Dylan. But the end product is an artist with an instantly recognizable, personal sound. It's a little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock, with lots of great picking, lilting melodies, and consistently first-rate lyrics that sound like the result of experience and conviction, not the desire to impress or score hits -- but he sure does impress. There isn't a clunker in the bunch, but if forced to pick highlights, one might list "Beyond the Blues," a duet with Gilmore; "U.S. Steel," with guitar and vocal reminiscent of early Johnny Cash; "Walkin' on the Moon," which Russell wrote and performs with Katy Moffat; and "Gallo del Cielo," an exuberant south-of the-border excursion.

Johnny Dowd — The Pawnbroker's Wife (2002)

Critics have been calling this Johnny Dowd's "most accessible" album -- but that's all relative, isn't it? For even among iconoclasts, the fiercely independent Johnny Dowd sets high-water marks for originality. Like previous efforts, The Pawnbroker's Wife still finds Dowd wallowing in the dredges of his psyche while somehow avoiding the flip into bloated drama that has dogged such would-be spooksters as 16 Horsepower or even Nick Cave. Dowd's music is stridently slippery -- punk and rock & roll are the foundation here (and Dowd and Justin Asher are remarkable rock guitarists), but there's something vaguely techno about some of his music as well. And then there's Kim Sherwood-Caso, whose disconcertingly sweet yet detached vocals can raise the hair on the back of your arms just as effectively as Dowd's foreboding drawl. This effort is top-notch Dowd, however, and if you allow yourself into Dowd's world through this album, you'll find he's actually a somewhat benign host. He even unfurls the Christmas classic "Jingle Bells" for your listening pleasure. Elsewhere, on the campily euphonious "I Love You," Dowd is in a romantic mood...yet "desperately" so. (And Dowd knows desperation.) This fine effort may move Dowd and company in the direction of pop accessibility, but it's still a long way off and Dowd's charming morbidity is still fully intact.

Lynne Hanson - Once The Sun Goes Down (2010)

Canadian Lynne Hanson makes a huge step in the direction of roots music on her third CD, although the country feel of Things I Miss and Eleven Months is still audible. She describes the eleven new songs that she wrote in her kitchen consequently as ‘porch music with a little Texas dirt’. Still she transcends that genre with influences from folk and singer-songwriter especially. Hanson transforms her emotions in a personal way into universal ones in six medium tempo songs and ballads she wrote alone and in five written together with mentor Paul Bourdeau. Looking back on a relationship she broke off she wavers between despair, resignation and desire. In doing so, her phlegmatic vocals contrast impressively with her feelings. Blake Manning’s dry drums, Brian Kobayakawa’s zooming bass, Jason Snidermans’ atmospheric keys and David Baxter’s guitar, banjo, mandoline and production do not only support Hanson’s understated vocals effectively, but underline them convincingly.

Julie Neumark - Dimestore Halo (2010)

Julie Neumark is the kind of live performer who gives it everything she’s got. She’s willing to beg, plead, crawl, snarl, and shout her way through a show and leave nothing left when she’s done, as she did during last year’s fiery show at South by Southwest. So it’s with trepidation that one approaches her studio album. Dimestore Halo reveals that one has nothing to fear. She gives her all during a recording session as well. From the rat-a-tat lyrically delivery of “Spare Change” to the sinewy howling of “Drink Myself Pretty” to the tender emotions of “Take Me”, Neumark so deeply immerses herself in the music that one cannot help but get caught up in the songs she’s singing. And her slash and burn guitar playing just adds to the intensity. The 11 titled tracks (and the secret acoustic bonus cut at the end) on her debut album reveal she’s a major talent just waiting for the right break to become a household name. She plays the kind of country rock that makes a Miranda Lambert or Gretchen Wilson sound tame, and her more personal songs, like “Cincinnati”, show the phoniness of what passes for sincerity in hit music today. Neumark is the real deal.

Hans Chew - Tennessee & Other Stories (2010)

Until now, Hans Chew has been best known as a sideman. He’s played exuberant barroom piano on the last couple Jack Rose albums and contributed keyboards and vocals to D. Charles Speer & The Helix, a country-tinged combo lead by No Neck Blues Band’s Dave Shuford. Tennessee & Other Stories, his debut LP, gives a more complete accounting of Chew’s skills as a singer, writer and multi-instrumentalist.

On the face of things, it’s an anachronistic effort. His gospel-steeped piano and organ playing makes no references to anything that’s happened musically since Nixon stepped down, and you won’t hear a studio effect less than 35 years old. Chew’s writing is steeped in a Gothic American tradition of murder ballads like “Pretty Polly” and hung-over repentances like “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” with an occasional detour through the back roads of classic rock — “Magnet Moon” may be all about coming back to where you started, but its melody bears a more than passing resemblance to Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.”

But a peek at the writing credits shows that he’s not totally stuck in the past. The sole cover is Tim Rose’s “Long Time Man”; Chew also credits Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, who remade it with the Bad Seeds, and the cues he takes from Cave’s version amp up the song’s stewing mix of hatred developed both in and out. Chew writes with a matter-of-factness about psychological impairment and pathology — he even drops the latter word on “Queen Of The Damned Blues” — that feels very much part of a present in which people can watch cable series about their favorite disorder. On “I Wish There Was A Train,” the narrator puts his old corporate job on the same level as his grandparents’ sharecropping, as if to say we were fucked then and we’re fucked now. He may yearn for the past, but he’s not making any pretence that the past is better than the present.

In fact, in Chew’s songs, the past is pretty tense (thanks, Captain); parents die, people make mistakes they can’t transcend, fate sets you up for the knockout punch coming down the road. But that’s not stopping Chew from making a record that sounds like a thing of the past, and since he played most of the instruments himself, you know he wanted it to sound that way. Just because the past holds the root of his problems, he seems to be saying, that doesn’t mean the music didn’t sound better.

Ray Wylie Hubbard - A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment [2010]

Texas songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard pushed life to the margin and lived to sing about it. In the process, his songs now possess the tenderness of a poet, the empathy of a historian, and the raw nerve of a card shark. On 2010’s A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), he adds "mythmaker" to his songwriting qualities. Hubbard strips his music to the bone here, and uses the Mississippi Delta blues tradition to his own ends. His music is raw yet utterly contemporary and crafted. Snarling acoustic, slide, and electric guitars played bottleneck style, dirty mandolins, pots, pans, stomp boxes, basses, organs, harmoniums, drums, rattles, shakers, and tambourines are the instruments that fuel this impressive collection. On “Down Home Country Blues,” Hubbard is visceral, and you can feel it in your belly bone: “Sugar’s got some sweetness to it as do my baby’s lips/When she hears some ole Howlin’ Wolf, she’s got to move her hips...I’m partial to Hooker, playing 'Crawlin’ King Snake'/I can say that Muddy Waters is as deep as William Blake.” Blues is the backbone of Hubbard’s sound here, but it's not the only one. “Drunken Poet’s Dream” (written with Hayes Carll) sounds like Rimbaud singing Americana in a honky tonk: “I got a woman who’s wild as Rome/She likes bein’ naked and gazed upon/She crosses a bridge and sets it on fire/She lands like a bird on a telephone wire/There’s some money on the table/There’s a gun on the floor/There’s some paperback books by Louis L’Amour....“

Some dangerous spirits adorn these songs: black sparrows hang around the swampy title cut where “...Heaven pours down rain and lightnin’ bolts....” Stomp box, harmonium, mandolins, and acoustic guitar reveal that Hubbard’s comfortable with both choices in the title. “Black Wings” describes life and music-making as a spiritual process that's not necessarily about choice; it's underscored by knife-edge slide guitars, drums, and shakers. In the ballad “Opium,” moaning voices and slide guitars languidly express the “elegant decay” an addict experiences, without judgment. “Loose” is a seductive jangling rock anthem, illustrated by a floating B-3, a slippery bassline, and open, ringing guitars. Hubbard sings about the nature of sensual pleasures in the voice of a woman his protagonist loves unconditionally. The set ends with banjo, fiddle, and his vocal singing “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” This is the Book of Revelations in a rattling country-gospel blues in Southern gothic terms; it's a brooding, menacing tune, the mirror image of the earlier resurrection chant "Whoop and Holler." Hubbard is a visionary songwriter. His musical language is so potent it conveys large ideas, secret histories, and hidden truths without excess lyrics or production. This leathery roots record contains music that bridges the gap between frail flesh and powerful spirit ruggedly, sensually, and honestly, making it a work of high art.

Kasey Anderson & The Honkies - Heart Of A Dog (2011)

On February 15, 2011, Seattle and Portland-based Kasey Anderson & The Honkies will celebrate the release of their latest full-length, “Heart of a Dog” (Red River Records).
Comprised of Kasey Anderson (vocals, guitar, percussion), Andrew KcKeag (guitar, vocals), Eric Corson (bass), and Mike Musburger (drums), Kasey Anderson & The Honkies bring a wealth of a “who’s who” of Northwest rock to their latest offering. McKeag has spent time in Presidents of the United States of America and The Long Witers, Corson in The Long Winters and, of course, Musburger from The Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows, The Posies, The Supersuckers, and countless other cult Seattle power-pop and indie-rock bands.
“Heart of a Dog,” which was produced by Kasey Anderson and The Honkies and Jordan Richter features guest appearances by The Decemberists’ Jenny Conlee (accordion), Richmond Fontaine’s Dave Harding (bass), and several other friends and fellow NW musicians.
With all this going for it, it is no surprise that “Heart of a Dog” has allowed Anderson to move beyond the “roots-rock” or “alt. country” tags he’s previously been welcomed with, and make the rock record he’s envisioned for quite some time.
"I was tired of playing solo shows and I was even more tired of the words roots rock," Anderson says by way of explanation. "I just wanted to make a rock ‘n’ roll record."
Kasey Anderson & The Honkies - Heart Of A Dog (2011)

Comprised of ten tracks that cannot be mistaken for anything other than rock ‘n’ roll, from the sinister riff of the album?s opening track, "The Wrong Light," to the barroom piano of the plaintive closer, "For Anyone," “Heart of a Dog” captures an energy that Anderson insists can come only when "everybody?s in the same room, at the same time."
To further ensure that each song carried its own immediacy, Anderson * who made his first foray into the producer?s chair on “Heart of a Dog” * refused to play guitar while tracking with his band. "The natural tendency of any backing band" is to follow the lead of the guy who wrote the songs, especially when he?s got a guitar," Anderson says. "I wanted to let the band dictate the groves.”
McKeag, a veteran of the Seattle music scene for nearly two decades (with service in The Supersuckers, The Long Winters, and Presidents of the USA to his credit), handles the responsibility ably, filling “Heart of a Dog” with an impressive array of guitar work, from the Stonesy swagger of "Mercy" to the bluesy, Waitsian stomp of "Revisionist History Blues." Carolina Story - When The River Met The Sea (2010)

Carolina Story isn't a soloist but a Memphis-based husband and wife duo, Ben and Emily Roberts, who offer folk roots and acoustic pop stylings with a thoughtful and finely crafted approach to their music. There are certain albums which lend themselves in a special way to a specific mood, captured in a specific time and place. Somehow the music, mood, and your surroundings briefly converge for one beautiful, fleeting moment, one that proves difficult to replicate.
This first album from is one of those albums. Sounding by turns like a '70s folk record, mixed with the acoustic stylings of John Mayer, with a whole load of other things in between, 'When The River Met The Sea' comprises that elusive blend of excellent songwriting and creative musicianship. "This Hell I've Been Calling Home" is a particular standout track, where lyric, guitar, piano and glockenspiel delicately interweave together. Another is "Sleepwalking", which deals with the malaise of living without knowing one's purpose, and really serves to highlight the songwriting prowess on display over these songs. I look forward to hearing more from this songwriting partnership. Their potential, if this album is anything to go by, is huge.

The Kinleys' debut album Just Between You and Me is an engaging set of country-pop illustrating that twin sisters Heather and Jennifer are quite gifted vocally. It's a joy to hear them sing these sweet country-pop tunes, even if the songs don't always equal their performances. With a more consistent set of material, the debut could have been even more impressive, but the raw talent the duo displays makes the record a top-notch first effort.

The Kinleys - The Kinleys II 2000

II is the second studio allbum by the American country music duo The Kinleys. It was released in 2000 (see 2000 in country music) as their second and final album . It includes the singles "She Ain't the Girl for You" and "I'm In", both of which charted on Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs). Radney Foster produced some of the tracks on the album, while the others were produced by Russ Zavitson and Tony Haselden, who also produced The Kinleys' debut.

"I'm In" was previously a single in 1998 for Foster from his album See What You Want to See, and was covered by Keith Urban on his 2009 album Defying Gravity. Also included on II is "Somebody's Out There Watching", a Top 20 hit for The Kinleys in 1998, which was previously included on the television soundtrack for the series Touched by an Angel.

With her blonde tresses, blue eyes, shapely figure, and oh-so-perfectly accessorized, youthful sense of style, there's something VERY familiar about this comely country crooner. Hmmm, looks like a Barbie doll, sings country-pop, and has an image tailor-made for video? Got it! Change the hook of "Boom," the opening song on her debut album, from "Heart fall down go boom" to "Hit me baby one more time," and it's crystal clear: Josie is the country version of Britney Spears! Like her teen pop counterpart, Josie's sound has all the indicators of a pre-fabricated pop star: the homogeneous hooks skillfully crafted by a mostly anonymous team of songwriters, the slickly produced vocals, and just a pinch of tradition (the odd fiddle, banjo, and harmonica here and there) to give it a twist. It's all fine if you're into that sort of thing, but the album is completely lacking in soul -- as interchangeable with anything Britney's done as with the vapid country-pop pap churned out by Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and their ilk.

V.A. - Honeymoon In Vegas (1992)

Country singers rule this soundtrack of Elvis Presley covers, which is every bit as flawed, frivolous and fun as the film from whence it came. While Billy Joel parodies "All Shook Up" and "Heartbreak Hotel," John Mellencamp labors to avoid parodying "Jailhouse Rock," and U2's Bono transforms "Can't Help Falling in Love" into an obsessive parable about hero worship, folks like Ricky Van Shelton and Trisha Yearwood just sit back and sing the things, which at least makes them pleasant after more than one plaing. Dwight Yoakam's power-chord-country version of "Suspicious Minds" and Travis Tritt's "Burning Love" rank with their best remakes. Breaking the trend are pop crooner Bryan Ferry, who sings a seductive British soul version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and the usually trustworthy Vince Gill, whose Pat Boone-style rendition of Arthur Crudup's classic blues "That's All Right" cleans up the grammar.

Leon Russell knows something about country music. Born in Oklahoma, virtually all of the country and blues made their way through Tulsa along with Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. And while Russell is known primarily as a rock & roll performer, that doesn’t mean jack. The 14 songs here offer a glimpse of where Russell’s heart really lies. All classic country and bluegrass tunes, Hank Wilson’s Back features Russell and a few dozen of his closest friends from both L.A. and Nashville tearing up the classics. With everyone from Melba Montgomery, Billy Byrd, Johnny Gimble, Bob Moore, Weldon Myrick, and Pete Drake to Carl Radle, David Briggs, Charlie McCoy, and fellow Okie J.J. Cale,
Russell in his alter ego runs through standards such as Lester Flatt’s “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Jambalaya,” Bill Monroe’s “Uncle Pen,” Hank Thompson’s “Six Pack to Go,” Leon Payne’s “Lost Highway,” George Jones’ “The Window up Above,” Jimmie Driftwood’s “The Battle of New Orleans,” and as a closer, Leadbelly’s “Goodnight Irene,” which that prick John Lomax took a co-write on. This is no idle affair. Russell’s reads of these classic songs from the country and
bluegrass canon are played with fire, verve, and reverence, and he uses every trick in the book to get at the bottom of their meaning, allowing his voice to do things it never did before or since this recording. The playing is well rehearsed and stellar, and since it is played straight, the arrangements are minimal, making Cale’s production job that much easier. Hank Wilson’s Back is raw, immediate, and full of the kind of drunken passion that only someone who loves the country music tradition could execute.
