The news is out: Zack Walther is bringing new and captivating musical twists to the thriving Texas music scene. It’s the next evolution of the sounds from the Lone Star State created by a new generation that’s taking the stage with some serious moxie, grounded in the best roots yet also right up to date for these times.
Walther and the band have developed and now launch this artistic progression from Gruene Hall, the hallowed musical ground zero in Central Texas where such notables and innovators as George Strait, Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, Robert Earl Keen and others have all played their way to fame. As the latest act to win a prestigious residency there, they’ve rocked the dancehall for more than a year of weekly Wednesday night shows, gathering fans and making musical waves that have already rippled across the Southwest and beyond. And now with Ambition, their debut Sustain Records album, Zack Walther and the Cronkites are ready to bring the sound that’s winning over Texas to the world.
It takes but a listen to hear that Ambition is indeed an apt statement of purpose for this band. The album is rich with the sound of a new musical generation coming into its own, and creating a style that defies easy description or categorization other than to say that it’s damned good and appealing as all get out. From a solid base of country and roots — these guys are dyed-in-the-wool Texans, after all — Walther and his group pull and thread in the best of everything: rock’n'roll from classic to the latest alternative, the tastiest pop, the finest singer-songwriters, you name it, as long as it’s quality music, it’s an inspiration. Then they indelibly stamp it with the trademark Zack Walther and the Cronkites sound.
Produced by fellow musician and songwriter Mark Addison, known for his production wizardry with Ian Moore, Guy Forsyth, Band of Heathens, Bob Schneider, Will Sexton and many others, Ambition lives up to its name by delivering a new Texas music for the world at large.
The 10-song-strong set opens with “Georgia Cane,” the musically widescreen cinematic tale of a wild woman with irresistible appeal, and closes with a blast on the explosive rock workout “Pull The Pin,” and delivers the goods with a vengeance in between. There’s everything from the ear-catching pop-rocker “So Hard” (written by Addison, Austin progressive blues hero Guy Forsyth and Nina Singh) to the tender prayer for redemption of “Just Say When” (with harmony vocals by Jess Klein) and the stirring and soulful reflection on life’s rewards of “Money Tree,” both co-written by Walther with band member Luke Leverett, whose work on a range of guitars and keyboards brings a kaleidoscope of colors to the recording. The potency of love and passion are palpable on “Down Easy” and “Without One Sound,” while “Mountain Laurel Bloom” takes listeners for a spiritually-blessed and folk-inflected tour of the Texas Hill Country and “Tumbleweed” captures the mixed emotional bag of the life of a band on the road. Whether it’s the big picture reflections on the world we live in on “Our Corner” or those small tender moments and majestically fiery musical moves, Ambition is a record that has it all for anyone who loves great music of spirit and genuine sincerity. And Walther sings it all with a classic vocal strength and finesse full of feelings that hit anyone with a heartbeat and ear for timeless music right where they live and love music.

From the Ozark Mountains of the Missouri countryside to the concrete jungles of New York City, Israel Nash Gripka presents a musical tradition that reveals both the American fabric and all that rests beneath those weathered and faded blankets of stars and stripes. His debut release, New York Town (2009) helped to garner fans in both the U.S. and throughout Europe. In 2011, Gripka, along with co-producer/drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and a group of friends, created his anticipated follow up, Barn Doors and Concrete Floors.

Dean Dillon is one of the most successful country music songwriters of the last 35 years. George Strait alone has recorded more than 50 of his songs, starting with his first hit Unwound. He's also a pretty good singer, although no George Strait obviously. Still, this album has everything a typical Strait album has except for Strait himself. Tracks: Friday Night's Woman, Holed Up In Some Honky Tonk, Best Love Friends, She Knows What She Wants, Holding My Own, Don't You Even (Think About Leaving), Her Thinkin' I'm Doing Her Wrong (Ain't Doin' Me Right), A Country Boy (Who Rolled The Rock Away), You Must Be Out Of Your Ever Lovin' Mind, The Umbrella Song .

A relatively new face that is bound to gain increasing attention on the Texas/Red Dirt scene in 2010 is twentysomething Huntsville, Texas, country singer-songwriter Cody Johnson.
Johnson, along with the Cody Johnson Band, has been making the rounds largely in Southeast Texas in the past year or so but with the independent release of "Six Strings One Dream," we find Johnson covering all sorts of lyrical territory.
A good example would be "Pray For Rain," a heartfelt song about a farmer facing hard times in the face of a drought. CJB's fiddle player, Chris Whitten, is a Lawton native who was recently touring with Kevin Fowler's band. Here, Whitten really adds a feeling of authenticity to the strong song.
"Nobody to Blame," the single, is an acoustic country ballad that sounds all the sweeter with Whitten's fiddle.
With its fresh, clean guitar sound, Johnson's voice soars on in "Finally Free."
The road map painted on "Texas Kind of Way" is a little clich?, but the rockin' guitar solo gives it an appealing edginess that works for Johnson.
There's no getting around the fact that "Slam the Door" sounds like a Waylon Jennings song. Johnson shares vocals with Texas music newcomer Brison Bursey of the Brison Bursey Band. This is the best song on the album.
Producer Keith Davis, a guitarist in his own right who is with the Scott Wiggins Band, helps showcase Johnson's strong whiskey-kissed vocals and the solid musicianship of guitarist Matt Rogers, bassist Danny Salinas and drummer Nathan Reedy, a Bartlesville native.
"Six Strings One Dream" is a fine album and one worthy of further attention on the Texas/Red Dirt/country music scene.

Viva Terlingua! is a live progressive country album by Jerry Jeff Walker and The Lost Gonzo Band recorded August 18, 1973 at the legendary Luckenbach Dancehall in Luckenbach, Texas and released later that year on MCA Nashville Records. The album excellently captures Walker's strived-for "gonzo country" sound, a laid-back country base with notes of "outlaw" rock, blues, and traditional Mexican norteńo and Tejano styles.
The Lost Gonzo Band as featured on the album included Gary P. Nunn and Kelly Dunn on keyboards (standard and electric piano and Hammond B-3 organ), Herb Steiner on pedal steel guitar, Craig Hillis on electric and acoustic guitars, Bob Livingston on bass, Michael McGeary on drums, country veteran Mickey Raphael on harmonica, and Mary Egan on fiddle, with Joanne Vent and many others contributing backup vocals. The album captures the band early in their life, and their simultaneously laid-back and tight style contributes heavily to the album's enduring popularity. The Lost Gonzo Band in several forms and with myriad varying members continues as Walker's backing to this day.
Notable tracks on the album include a now-famous and rollicking version of Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother," a version which continues to receive airplay on free-form radio outlets today, both "traditional" and "progressive" stations alike. The song's ribald lyrics, uptempo rock beat and firmly country-rooted instrumentation make it a prime example of the "outlaw" phenomenon.
Other covers include a somber cut of Guy Clark's "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train," the Michael Martin Murphey-penned drunkard's lament "Backslider's Wine," and Gary P. Nunn's own "London Homesick Blues," another "life of a country singer" song which endures on radio, well-known for its chorus of "I wanna go home with the armadillo."
The remaining songs were all Walker originals, and except for "Little Bird," which appeared on Walker's debut album Mr. Bojangles, all make their recorded debut. The opener, "Gettin' By," is a semi-autobiographical reflection on Walker's haphazard recording and writing style as he describes how "I can see (then-MCA Records president) Mike Maitland pacin' the floor," but assures him, "Mike, don't you worry, something's bound to come out."
A bit of Texas tradition is captured in "Sangria Wine," a recollection of nights passed in the company of friends, Mexican food, and the titular potent potable. "Get It Out" and "Wheel," which both make their lone showings in Walker's recorded output here, are twin sides of the same coin: the first a declaration of defiant living, the second a meditation on the fragile and transitory nature of life.
The album inspired a tribute album of sorts, a nearly track-for-track remake called "Viva Terlingua! Nuevo!", recorded in the same location in January 2006. Many of the original Lost Gonzo Band members from the 1973 session appeared on the album, along with new artists who have become part of the "red dirt" or Texas Country scene like Cory Morrow, Jimmy LaFave, and The Derailers. However, Jerry Jeff Walker took legal issue with the album, saying it "too closely resembles the original" [1]. After a name change to "Viva Terlingua! Compadres!" the album was released in March of 2007.

In the still relatively young underground roots scene, there’s only a few folks you could really call a “legend”, but one would certainly be Col. JD Wilkes of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. Over the last couple of years, the “Jekyll” to JD’s Wilkes “Hyde” from the madhouse Shack Shakers performances, has been a side project called The Dirt Daubers. They released a homespun self-titled album in 2009 but are now planning their first proper release Wake Up, Sinners! for September 13th via Colonel Knowledge Records.
The Dirt Daubers include JD’s wife Jessica on mandolin, and Shack Shaker’s bassist Mark Robertson. Mixing acoustic rockabilly, blues, jazz and country into a thrilling Frankenstein hybrid, Wake Up, Sinners is a collection of raw originals…

After nearly 15 years shackled to Curb Records, who clearly had no idea what to do with him and fought his restless spirit at every turn, Hank Williams III is a free agent and eager to make up for lost time. Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town is one of three albums Hank3 released on the same day through his own label, and while the other two albums are devoted to Hank’s hardcore rock & roll, the first half of this two-disc set is the most straightforward country set he’s released since Straight to Hell in 2006. Of course, Hank32s idea of a straightforward country album isn’t much like what anyone in Nashville has ever done; while these tunes may feature plenty of chicken-pickin’ guitar, fiddle, banjo, and accordion, “Ridin’ the Wave” roars down the road like Mötorhead,…

Blind Pilot's hooky, low-key pop isn't the stuff of groundbreaking, boundary-pressing experimentation, but the craftsmanship and consistency at its core should never be minimized, either. After emerging out of nowhere with 2008's self-released 3 Rounds and a Sound — that year's most solidly appealing record, if not its best outright — the Portland, Ore., band has toured with The Decemberists, been showcased on Morning Edition, and recorded a lovely, gently appealing follow-up called We Are the Tide.
Out Sept. 13, We Are the Tide blooms agreeably from start to finish. Though Blind Pilot locates extra energy on the live stage — the band's sound has tightened over time, as it's expanded from the duo of Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski to a large and fleshed-out sextet — the new record focuses more on lush, pretty concoctions like the album-opening "Half Moon." We Are the Tide benefits enormously once Blind Pilot introduces a bit of thumping propulsion in the record's title track, but the softer material radiates warmth, too.
For all their lack of rock 'n' roll flash — Nebeker and Dobrowski have logged thousands of miles' worth of touring on bicycles, even after Blind Pilot's audience grew well beyond the West Coast — these guys make remarkably sturdy, gorgeous songs. With its broad appeal and good-natured grace, We Are the Tide stands to keep them off the bikes and in buses for the foreseeable future. Environmental impact aside, that can only be a good thing.

Nothing in the music of Kris Delmhorst immediately suggests a deep affinity with proto-punk new-wave masters the Cars, and yet a dozen years into a career at the nexus of folk, indie-pop, and Americana, Delmhorst has taken a brief vacation from her own literate songwriting to bring us Cars, a collection of songs by the band that defined an era.Balancing classic hits and deep cuts, Delmhorst has painstakingly deconstructed every hook-laden arrangement, every unforgettable line, creating a sonic palette inventively recast: Ric Ocasek’s herky-jerky bravado is replaced by the amber warmth of Delmhorst’s luminescent voice; the processed, synth-heavy aesthetic of the originals is reinvented with an array of organic instruments including fiddle, accordion, upright …

With his emotional and gravel-coated bellow, vocalist/guitarist Chuck Ragan made a name for himself as one-fourth of the much loved Gainesville post-hardcore outfit Hot Water Music before releasing his first solo album in 2007.
This solo project of Ragan’s strays rather far from the punk rock sound for which his band Hot Water Music has become so well known over the years; instead he has created his very own stripped-down acoustic sound based primarily on certain elements of folk and alt-country. It’s a way to disengage from the full band lineup and stand on his own; relying entirely on his fingers and voice to carry forth his music to the audiences he plays for. There is no one to hide behind, no feedback or distortion in which to lose one’s mistakes, no percussion to assist with timing, and the like. Rather, it is the type of endeavor which fully reveals the singer/songwriter for what he is truly worth.

There are songwriters, and then there are poets -- artists who magically weave melodies and words into three-and-a-half-minute masterpieces that outshine the paint-by-numbers songs that often clog up the airwaves. Dean Dillon is the latter. The Tennessee native hitchhiked to Nashville in the early '70s in search of country music glory and wound up being one of the most successful songwriters to ever set foot in Music City. Dillon's earliest break came when, at the age of 15, he won a contest that landed him a regular spot on Jim Clayton's Star Time Variety Show in Knoxville, TN. The singer/songwriter finished high school and then struck out for the bright lights of Nashville. A short-lived stint on Plantation Records, under the name Dean Dalton, produced the single "Las Vegas Girl." In 1976, Dillon landed the role of Hank Williams in Opryland's Country Music Show, USA. The theme park gig indirectly helped Dillon secure his first publishing deal.

This album is Texas through and through. Gary Nicholson had set out to make what he calls "a truly country record." He's certainly succeeded, though there still are other elements there, like a New Orleans flavor on a couple of tracks. But those who love country will most likely dig this album.
I have to admit, at first I had a bit of trouble with this album. Maybe it's because I have a lot of negative associations with Texas. First off, there is George W. Bush and that whole debacle. Also, Texas executes many more people than any other state. And we have Texas to blame for Alex Rodriguez's insane contract and subsequent ego. Of course, none of this has anything to do with the music (except that the music celebrates that state). And this album definitely did grow on me, especially songs like "Some Kind Of Crazy" and "A Woman In Texas, A Woman In Tennessee."

Singer/songwriter Tom Russell returns with a powerful follow-up to his acclaimed 2009 album Blood and Candle Smoke. Co-produced by Russell and keyboardist Barry Walsh, and recorded in Tucson, Texas, Nashville and Los Angeles, Mesabi features contributions from Calexico, Van Dyke Parks and Lucinda Williams, the last of whom guest on a cover of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall".
A consummate storyteller, Russell has amassed a devoted following that cherishes his vivid, novelistic tales evoking the spirit of the American experience in tighly constructed, panoramic vignettes. Among his most ardent fans are fellow artists; Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, k.d. lang, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Iris Dement, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Ian Tyson, Nanchi Griffith, and Guy Clark have all recorded Tom's songs.
