Qatar Airlines Business Class is an Out-of-Body Experience This is the business class seat controls on Qatar Airways business class seat. See that "bed" icon - we're talking 180 degrees flat bed. So flat that when I pushed it just after takeoff I felt like I was sleeping on a head down slope. Oh and the dreams! I actally dreamed that I was dreaming about sleeping on a plane, and then woke up to realize I was sleeping on my side, tucked on with a blanket from the steward. The best 3 hour nap on a plane I ever had. I only wish the flight was longer (and when do you -ever- say that?! -- Class of '09 My mum and Aunt got me these flowers... and then my Mum and another Aunt arranged them for me. Flowers don't last terribley long unfortunately, so I took their picture tonight in hopes of preserving their longevity. Here, I did a little set-up with a blanket as a backdrop (which you can't see in this particular photo) and a table lamp that I moved around to change the lighting/shadows. That's my degree book in the backround and my tassel in the front. 167/365 :: March 12, 2009 Today was...stressful. Went to Dallas for the sports industry career fair at the American Airlines Center. It was not quite what I expected - probably because it's not quite what was advertised. It was about twenty five companies looking for a few positions each. Nobody had volunteer opportunities and 90% of the positions that didn't require a degree were ticket sales. I took the recommended fifty copies of my resume and only ended up handing out about ten or twelve. So what do I do with the rest of these? I have no idea. Mostly today just convinced me, again, that I hate the business world. It's just not for me. So blahhh. At least I got to see the Stars win against the Canes later, even if it wasn't very much fun going to a game by myself... Hoda 2 After many years in the workforce in Egypt, her home country, Hoda Baghet is stepping back into the classroom. Since coming to Canada in December 2008, Baghet is facing the same issue that many new Canadians face; difficulty breaking into the workforce. When Baghet and her family came to Canada from Egypt, she graduated from Mansoura University with a bachelor degree in early childhood education. She has 15 years of teaching what would be the Canadian equivalent of kindergarten as well as three years experience managing the human resources department of a pharmaceutical company. But, her experience hasn’t translated into a job in Canada. She has not let that deter her from accomplishing her goals. She has started taking the YMCA caregiver training program and classes with the Immigrant Settlement and Integration Services to improve her qualifications. She is also taking business planning workshops at the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development in hopes of one day being able to be eligible to open her own daycare center in Halifax. 107/365 End of another chapter Date: Friday 1 May 2009 Time: 6.49pm Location: Lakers Tavern, Thornlie, WA, Australia Photo by: Kaeti Having after work/farewell drinks at Lakers with a bunch of colleagues, got Kaeti who is taking over some of my job, to take this. So today I finished up as admin assistant at Genalysis/Intertek. 4.5years ago I started as receptionist there, as I'd come straight to Australia after finishing my facilities management degree in The Netherlands without work experience. I also worked at Genalysis as Maintenance Accounts officer for a while. To be honest, I should have left a long time ago, but for varying reasons I didn't. Now I have, so it's time to move forward, not point looking back with regret at all!! It obviously wasn't *that* bad as otherwise I couldn't have stayed for that long, and I will miss some of the great people I've worked with. This morning we had morning tea and I received a big card and some great gifts and a voucher from Kathmandu. I didn't even have to fake my happiness with these, hehe :) Gary, who's been my main manager over the past few years, gave a speech which mainly took the piss out of my morning time management skills and my driving disasters over the years, but was also very kind. Wood Print Block Hand carved shesham-wood print block from India. Each is one-of-a-kind and designs are often unique to particular regions. Nearly a lost art, this handcrafted work will soon disappear, being replaced by automated web presses and silk screening processes. It is only a growing appreciation of this craft in urban and export markets that is keeping it alive. The block carving process is tedious and demands an exceptional degree of skilled craftsmanship. The most skilled artisan in a block making shop, often the owner, will work on a piece such as this one. A block starts out as a planed slice of shesham wood. The design is traced on to the wood's planed surface. The wood is then chiseled to the depth of a third of an inch. The precision that a master block maker achieves with his meager arsenal of hammer and chisel is truly extraordinary. Military History Museum, Dresden The Bundeswehr Military History Museum (German: Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr) is the military museum of the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, and one of the major military history museums in Germany. The museum is under the technical and administrative chain of command of the German Armed Forces Military History Research Office. It is located in a former military arsenal in the Albertstadt neighborhood of Dresden. The arsenal, an enormous, neo-classical building, was decommissioned and became a military museum. Early in the 21st century, it was decided to give the museum a major renovation and architect Daniel Libeskind won the competition with a design for an glass and steel wedge that slices through the building at an angle symbolizing the rupture in German history represented by the Nazi era. The museum reopened on 15 October 2011. From Wikipedia Inside the Intrepid The Intrepid is an interesting museum for all persons interested in flight, military history or just technology. me, maria and dad My dad passed away early Friday morning, while I was on my way to JFK, from liver failure due to cancer. I wrote this for the program we will be passing out at the funeral on Thursday. But really, there are no words for this kind of loss. He was my daddy, who held me at every stage of my life, who let me go to New York, who held me even though he didn't think I was around enough. I love him and miss him so very much. Emanuele B------ was born in San Pietro, a small town in the north of Italy, on November 21, 1942. He died in Sunland, CA with his family on January 12, 2007. The son of a stonemason responsible for impressive aqueducts in the Alps, Emanuele dreamed of an education so he could become a structural engineer, a dream that led him to the home of his aunt and uncle in California in 1962. A boy from a small village with an 8th grade education, he completed the requirements for an American high school diploma in a matter of months and continued to work as he put himself through school, transferring from Pasadena City College to California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo. Emanuele spent his summers during college working at the El Paseo restaurant on historic Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. In 1967, he met Los Angeles native, Carolyn, who danced flamenco at the restaurant under the name Carolina Rojas. The romance of the dancer and the waiter led to their marriage in 1968, and both finished their education at Cal Poly, a place that would continue to be of great importance to him. They graduated in 1970, both on the Dean’s List. Emanuele later completed a Master’s of Science degree at UCLA, fufilling his dream. Over the next thirty years, he owned and managed several structural engineering firms. His satisfaction in his work did not prevent him from seeking other challenges, in business as well as other arenas. He demonstrated his dedication to Cal Poly by working for the establishment of The George Hasslein Endowed Chair For Interdisciplinary Studies in Environmental Design, named for his mentor. With his wife Carolyn, he published The Vision, a pictorial history of his alma mater. In 2001, Cal Poly honored him with the Alumnus of the Year Award from the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. In 1991, we moved into the home that had been another of Emanuele’s dreams. A beautiful four-storied architectural building filled with light, he had spent ten years designing, planning and then building the house that the family would occupy for the next ten years. He visited his family in Italy as often as possible and was able to visit everyone one last time in August 2006. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn, and his two daughters, Maria Elena and Lisa Caterina. Survivors also include his brothers and sisters in Italy – Mario, Carolina, Santino, Arnaldo, and Adelia – and his many nieces and nephews. His life of hard work, loyalty to colleagues, clients and employees, and devotion to his family is a testament to the viability of the American dream. May he know how dearly he is loved, and that the world is a lesser place without his dedication, brilliance, and courage. CDR Greg McWherter Commander Greg McWherter is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and a 1986 graduate of Avondale High School where he lettered in football and soccer. 1969 (26) April > Liverpool > saved by Ethel When Lynn wasn’t spending time on ‘Albert’, she was using her beautiful blue eyes in a desperate hunt for a teaching job. This was when she learned the catastrophic news: her American degree would never be recognised as a sufficient qualification in the UK. She would have to go to teacher training college for at least two years, maybe three. Lynn’s first reaction was guilt at having wasted her parents’ money on her degree, and her second thought was that she needn’t have left England and gone back to finish the degree. But I was soon to be reminded how hard it was for life to keep Lynn down, for next day she was her usual bouncy self, saying how *good* it would be to be able to concentrate for two years on subjects that she really fancied now, such as drama and theology or music. Of course, her three years at Wooster University hadn’t been wasted anyway, any more than my six and a half at Exeter – despite the fact that I didn’t need a French MA in order to make furniture (not even for French polishing!). In those days, university was as much a life experience as a search for qualifications, and we’d both benefited enormously from our university experiences. We wouldn’t have been the people we were without them. And I think that was also true about our year’s separation. I’m not sure things would have worked out so wonderfully if Lynn hadn’t had to go back to America. The separation was a huge test, but we came out of it stronger. Anyway, Lynn discovered that Liverpool was blessed with a training college for mature students. It had been founded not many years before by Ethel Wormald, the city’s famous socialist Mayor. She believed in education as a lifetime’s pursuit, and since her college was for mature students, the courses were not residential. This was ideal for Lynn, plus the added bonus that the college’s year began in January, giving her time to get paid work in order to build up some capital. Taken by: me. Definitely the last of my summer 68 portfolio. my REAL wall - Professional edition - March 04, 2009 At work I was asked to present a poster showing "My Learning Journey" that resulted in me ending up in the job I was in. We could present this in any way we wanted, so I drew a poster. As my job is in e-learning, much of my work overlaps with my spare-time wasting hobbies. I mean at work I have to use blogs and forums, and at home I use blogs and forums. At work I do various projects with flickr, and at home I take lots of photos and put them on flickr. So, it was really only a matter of time before my REAL wall had to come into work, and here it is. The professional edition has document filing capabilities but none of those silly applications you mess about with in the home edition.
