1969 (26) April > Liverpool > saved by Ethel

When Lynn wasn’t spending time on ‘Albert’, she was using her beautiful blue eyes in a desperate hunt for a teaching job. This was when she learned the catastrophic news: her American degree would never be recognised as a sufficient qualification in the UK. She would have to go to teacher training college for at least two years, maybe three. Lynn’s first reaction was guilt at having wasted her parents’ money on her degree, and her second thought was that she needn’t have left England and gone back to finish the degree. But I was soon to be reminded how hard it was for life to keep Lynn down, for next day she was her usual bouncy self, saying how *good* it would be to be able to concentrate for two years on subjects that she really fancied now, such as drama and theology or music.

Of course, her three years at Wooster University hadn’t been wasted anyway, any more than my six and a half at Exeter – despite the fact that I didn’t need a French MA in order to make furniture (not even for French polishing!). In those days, university was as much a life experience as a search for qualifications, and we’d both benefited enormously from our university experiences. We wouldn’t have been the people we were without them. And I think that was also true about our year’s separation. I’m not sure things would have worked out so wonderfully if Lynn hadn’t had to go back to America. The separation was a huge test, but we came out of it stronger.

Anyway, Lynn discovered that Liverpool was blessed with a training college for mature students. It had been founded not many years before by Ethel Wormald, the city’s famous socialist Mayor. She believed in education as a lifetime’s pursuit, and since her college was for mature students, the courses were not residential. This was ideal for Lynn, plus the added bonus that the college’s year began in January, giving her time to get paid work in order to build up some capital.

Taken by: me. Definitely the last of my summer 68 portfolio.

At work I was asked to present a poster showing "My Learning Journey" that resulted in me ending up in the job I was in. We could present this in any way we wanted, so I drew a poster.

As my job is in e-learning, much of my work overlaps with my spare-time wasting hobbies. I mean at work I have to use blogs and forums, and at home I use blogs and forums. At work I do various projects with flickr, and at home I take lots of photos and put them on flickr.

So, it was really only a matter of time before my REAL wall had to come into work, and here it is.

The professional edition has document filing capabilities but none of those silly applications you mess about with in the home edition.

This image, complete with annotations etc, is also linked as part of my professional portfolio.
