The Forest: Chapter 4
The Letter
Kieran decided he had had quite enough of walking, and instead decided to stay nearby his stand of corn, and work out exactly what he was able to do in this forest. It had become clear to him that he was able to create things that he wished for or needed to have. It also occurred to him that he may have even created some of the inhabitants of this world even if it was inadvertently. Hiscuriosity was a powerful force that morning as he woke. He created for himself a nice fruit and granola breakfast with milk and honey, on a table spun from vinesthat grew out of the warm, black earth.
He sat down on a rock afterward and thought about writing his Sister a letter, to tell her that everything was alright and that he was enjoying himself in the forest. A piece of fine parchment appeared in one hand, and a pen with a gold-inlaid nib appeared in the other. This pen was itself a wonder, and never seemed to run dry as Kieran wrote the letter to his Sister. After signing it, and folding it carefully, the raven that he had met the previous day flew over and landed on a lichen covered rock at his feet.
"I see you have a letter to be delivered, and I will do this if you bid me to." said the raven dancing from one foot to the other as if it was very uncomfortable to be on the ground.
"Yes, I would like that very much. This letter is to be delivered to my Sister, who must be quite worried about me by this time." Kieran said to the raven. Marta would indeed be very worried, perhaps even presuming Kieran dead. She would be so surprised to find him still alive.
"Your Sister lives outside the forest, but I cannot leave the edge of the woods. What would you have me do?" the raven had cocked its head to the side, and was alternating viewing Kieran from one eye, and then with a flip of its beak, the other eye.
"If you would set the letter down at the nearest edge of the forest to my home, so that Marta may find it and not have to come into the forest to pick up the letter, that would suffice." Kieran supposed. Still, he did not fully trust this bird and so he started to think about how he might verify that the letter had been delivered.
The raven picked up the letter in its shiny black beak, and flew off with it promptly. Kieran started thinking about creating something that would allow him to see the delivery of the letter for himself. He was reminded of the witcher woman of the dark town to the north of his small village. It was said that she possessed a crystal of such clarity that anything could be seen though it, even things that had not yet happened. Kieran found himself holding a dark stone. When he touched it, the dark stone began to warm, and in its flat, shiny, face he was able to see the back of the raven with the letter he was carrying to Marta.
As he watched, the bird flew down to the ground and walked slowly toward the closest edge of the wood nearest to the small thatched roof house that he lived in with his sister and parents. Marta could be seen nearby playing with a small toy mouse. She noticed the raven with the letter in its beak shortly after it had landed, and she watched as it dropped the letter, turned and began to fly away. The image in the stone shifted back to the letter at the command of Kieran's thoughts, and he was able to watch Marta pull the letter up and out of the forest edge and read it. Immediately she fell to one knee and began to weep, so happy was she that her dear brother was still alive and well within the forest! She took the letter, ran back inside the house, and later came out again with the paper folded differently and placed the letter back where she had found it. As she backed away slowly, the raven who had flown to the top of a nearby tree, flew down, picked up the letter and flew off with it again, back to Kieran.
Shortly, the raven flew back to the clearing where Kieran was sitting, and flapped down to the stone perch. Kieran took the letter and read what his Sister had written to him.
Dear Brother,
News from you is much welcomed, and I am very sorry I was teasing you before you went into the forest, I meant no harm. Mother and Father were distraught but strangely enough they are recovering quickly. I will tell them of your letter, but I fear they will not believe me. I worry about you daily, and hope you will come home soon. Be careful, you must have encountered some of the many who have ventured into the forest by now, do not become one of them. If none here miss you, I am not among them.
M
A tear rolled silently from its perch in the corner of Kieran's eye, and fell to the ground. He was not surprised by his parents' lack of concern, but he was very touched to find out that his Sister, of all people, would actually want him to come home safely. This was certainly an unexpected turn of events for him, and he spent a good deal of time before he accepted it. In his see
Simple Flying Crank Ghost on the cheap!
I've had this simple prop in my upstairs window for the past 5 years, and it's always a crowd favorite! People have asked me if it was a hologram or projection ;-) I'm almost embarassed how simple it is. Now, it's not a proper crank ghost, it only has one up and down motion, but with the fan billowing the strips of cloth, it really doesn't matter. Check out the notes above to see what I use to create this cool ghost.

Hollins House - Dining Room / View
See those windows? The views won't be QUITE as spectacular in the evening, but we could still get a decent sunset out of it. Our tables would be rectangular instead of round, since having round tables actually wastes a lot of space. I like the idea of rectangular tables, 'cause it means we have more leeway with who to sit at each table. Plus it's a little more social (I think) than limiting the people you can chat with to the other 7-8 seated at your table.
working on the dining room table
We decided to take the leaf out, just kept collecting too much stuff and with the holidays over, just us 3, so downsized from a oval that sat 8 easily to a round that seats 4 and a munchkin with room to spare, here is hoping we stop piling stuff on it, I oiled with some orange beeswax and feel like the room grew!

Laurelhurst Market Dining Table Aerial
I think this was the first time I actually stood up on a chair in a restaurant to take one of these shots. Maybe that's why one of the owners recognized us the next time we came in.
Laurelhurst Market is the new restaurant and butcher shop run by the Viande folks. We had a wonderful supper there, but it's a notch or two more expensive than we usually do. However, the butcher shop and sandwich counter are brilliant, and no more expensive than other butcher shops or sandwich counters, so we've been back several times to get sandwiches and stuff for cooking.

An Angel on his shoulder
I just had to take a break from the South Africa series as something happened yesterday that was so awesome!
It was early in the morning, around 8 o'clock. I just had my first coffee when all of a sudden I heared a bang on the window. A blackbird that had been feeding on the bird feeding table had crashed straight into the window. That was weird as we have stuck a ridiculous amount of bird silhouettes on the windows to prevent just that...
I looked up and saw him lying on the terrace, kind of dazed. And then it happened... A Sparrow Hawk, who probably was the cause of why the Blackbird had crashed into the window flew straight onto the terrace, grabbed the dazed Blackbird and tried to take off.
But, the Blackbird was too heavy and he landed just 5 or 6 meters out of the terrace. By that time I had grabbed the camera and was on the floor of the living room, shooting right through the windows.
I thought the Blackbird was dead, but as I saw the Sparrow Hawk sitting on top of the Blackbird, I all of a sudden saw it moving! It was still alive! Clearly the Sparrow Hawk didn't exactly know what to do. His prey was too heavy to lift, but he was also disturbingly close to a hostile environment; our house. So, he started plucking the bird! Alive and all. At that point I must admit I didn't know what to do. I wouldn't mind at all when the Blackbird would have been dead, but to watch the bird being 'scalped' alive was something else.... But I also knew that the Sparrow Hawk had to eat; it's winter and these are not easy times....
I can tell you that I just wanted a clear shot, but when I opened the sliding doors, truthfully I knew that the Hawk woud fly. And it did. Just to land 3 meters higher up in the cherry tree. The Blackbird just sat there, completely shocked out of his wits. At that moment a Buzzard, who had witnessed the whole scene from afar, chose to do a fly-over only a meter over the poor freaked out Blackbird's head. It landed some 30 meters further on in the orchard, as it had clearly seen me behind the windows. The Sparrow Hawk was still there... waiting..
I saw that the Blackbird tried to regain his strength. And that was the moment the Sparrow Hawk charged again..
I couldn't help it, but at that moment, while the Blackbird had survived two raptor attacks, I figured that he deserved a second chance, so I stood up. The Sparrow Hawk saw me and flew off.
It took 15 minutes, with the Sparrow Hawk and the Buzzard watching every move, but finally, the Blackbird flew off. Guess that not only cats have nine lives. This Blackbird had used up most of them today..... I guess he really had an angel on his shoulder today...

The Art of the Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the Classics
From Tokyo to New York, a cocktail renaissance is happening as "bar chefs" create delicious elixirs worthy of their kitchen counterparts. An epicenter of this barroom artistry can be found at the Absinthe Brasserie & Bar in San Francisco (a city that spends more money per capita on alcohol than any other in the country). Bartenders Jeff Hollinger and Bob Schwartz share their artisan approach for stunning creations that unveil a new spectrum of flavors. Fresh herbs and even aromatic lavender are deftly used to augment classic and new cocktail recipes. Syrups and mixes are carefully crafted from scratch, ensuring small-batch perfection and a harmony of flavors. Acclaimed photographer Frankie Frankeny captures their virtuoso mixing performances with a refreshing take on the cocktail, creating a showpiece for any living room.

Glencairn Crystal Whiskey Tasting Glass, Set of 4
Champagne, Brandy, Wine... each has its own glass. Yet whisky, the worlds most complex spirit, can be found served in anything from hi-ball tumblers to Paris goblets. It's a bit like pouring your vintage champagne into a pint tumbler or your XO brandy into a shot glass! Raymond Davidson decided it was about time someone designed a proper whisky glass...a single definitive glass that the whiskey world could call its own. Following in the tradition of Scottish innovation, the Glencairn Glass has arrived. It's roots lie in the traditional nosing and tasting glasses used by master blenders and connoisseurs around the world.
Combining the knowledge and expertise of some of the whisky world's leading innovators, the unique and stylish shape has been crafted with eminent care to enhance the enjoyment of single malts and aged blends. The tapering mouth allows an ease of drinking not associated with traditional nosing glasses, while capturing that all-important bouquet. The wide bowl allows for the fullest appreciation of the whiskey's color and the solid base is designed to be easy on the hand.
Today the Glencairn Glass can be found at every distillery in Scotland, Ireland, Wales as well as most in the USA. It has won accolades from around the world including the Queens Award, the highest award for business in the UK. It may have taken a few hundred years to arrive, but whisky now has a glass of it's own... FINALLY

Pink tiers bracelet
These are really cool beads! I have been frequenting a crafters outlet and that is where I got the pink glass beads on top. I got about 30 of them for .45 cents. This bracelet I actually made while at my last craft show in October. Business was slow so I started putting this together. It got looked at a lot, but didn't sell so I got to take a photo of it.
Photo taken after I made a macro Photo Studio with the directions off the Strobist site. Lighting was the 2 overhead fluorescents in the room and 2 table lamps with daylight bulbs in them.
Flowing amber
A bit of a detour. When I was downloading, or uploading, some pictures and picked up one of the crystal sculptures to check on a detail of a certain part, it noticed how the light of the table lamp caused a totally different play of reflections. Further down the photostream I will post a few more -- taken against the brightness of the monitor.

Ordinary nail files create tiny fractures in your nail which can weaken the nail and cause the nail to split and become brittle. Because the glass file is so hard and the filing surface so extremely fine, you can file in any direction without damaging the nail. It will leave your nails incredibly smooth! Amazingly the glass file works very well on extremely hard nails as well as very soft nails. Since the surface of the glass nail file is so fine and uniform, regular use will actually help grow more beautiful nails, they will be healthier and smoother.

Martha Stewart's Prime Rib Roast
Prime rib, or standing rib roast, has long been a mainstay at the holiday table (where it is often paired with Yorkshire pudding, a British specialty made from the pan juices and a simple batter of flour, eggs, and milk). As it is expensive, prime rib should be handled with extra care. It is imperative that you have an instant-read thermometer for determining the internal temperature; if allowed to cook too long, the meat will no longer be a rosy pink inside, the optimal color for any high-quality roast. Remove the roast when still rare, as it will continue to cook as it rests, rising as much as 10 degrees in 20 minutes.
Rubbing meat (as well as chicken and fish) with herbs, spices, and a bit of oil will add tremendous flavor. Here, the beef is coated with a mixture of bay leaves, sage, and orange zest, all familiar holiday flavors. Allowing the meat to "marinate" in the rub overnight deepens the flavor even more. A similar result is achieved by simply salting the meat a day or two before roasting, whereby the salt will have penetrated the meat much like a brining solution.
Larger roasts such as prime rib, crown roast, and a whole turkey are started at a high temperature (450-degrees F) to sear the meat, then the temperature is lowered after 30 minutes to prevent the outside from burning before the meat is cooked through. The exterior won't develop a crust right away, but the initial high heat gives the outside a head start so that it will be perfectly browned in the end. --Martha Stewart
Prime Rib Roast
For Rub
15 dried bay leaves, crumbled
1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh sage leaves, plus several whole leaves for garnish
1/2 cup extra--virgin olive oil
coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1/3 cup finely grated orange zest (from 2 to 3 oranges)
For Roast
1 three-rib prime rib of beef (about 7 pounds), trimmed and frenched
Prepare Meat
Stir together crumbled bay leaves, sage, the oil, 1? teaspoons salt, and the orange zest in a small bowl. Season with pepper. Rub herb mixture all over the beef, coating evenly. Refrigerate overnight, covered. About 2 hours before you plan to cook the beef, remove it from the refrigerator. Place beef, fat side up, in a roasting pan and allow it to come to room temperature. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 450-degrees F.
Roast
Cook beef for 30 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350-degrees F and continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into meat (away from bone) registers 115-degrees F to 120-degrees F (for rare), about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes longer. Let rest 20 minutes.
Carve and Serve
Slice meat away from ribs, cutting along the bones. Then, slice meat crosswise to desired thickness. Serve, garnished with whole sage leaves.

The Italian Country Table: Home Cooking from Italy's Farmhouse Kitchens
If you dream of Italy -- and who does not? -- be prepared to fall in love with this extraordinary cookbook. Written by Lynne Rossetto Kasper, author of The Splendid Table: Recipes from Emilia-Romagna, the Heartland of Northern Italian Food (winner of both the James Beard and Julia Child/IACP Cookbook-of-the-Year Awards), it is every bit the equal of its celebrated predecessor.
Read its exuberant pages, eat its lusty dishes, and you enter a landscape vibrant with rural life. You are one with the terrain. In some sense, you are home. That, of course, is the miracle of Italy -- no matter where we come from, we want to be a part of it. And the miracle of The Italian Country Table is its ability to take us there.
And what a journey! You will never be as impatient to get into your kitchen as when you are planning a meal from this book. Two hundred recipes, personally collected from home cooks throughout the length and breadth of Italy, will keep calling you back.
Who could resist the "Gatto" di Patate, a mashed-potato "lasagne" from the Neapolitan countryside? Or a Tuscan Mountain Supper of warm beans tossed with an herbed tomato sauce and eaten with tart greens? Or Pasta of the Grape Harvest, a Sicilian dish of grapes, red wine, orange zest, spices, pistachios and linguine? Or Chocolate Polenta Pudding Cake?
Kasper, host of Public Radio's The Splendid Table, is a master teacher who thinks about cooking in a way that is radically distinctive. Her chapter on tomatoes and tomato sauces, a treasure by itself, will change the way you think about them -- and cook them -- forever. Her guide to buying and saucing pasta contains more useful facts than many books that devote themselves to pasta exclusively.
Kasper, the grandchild of Italian immigrants, describes herself as someone with a love of lingering "in places where life changes slowly." This personal book abounds with stories of artisans, farmers and family. It is a portrait of Italian country life.
Where you read The Italian Country Table, cook from it or use it to plan a trip (there is an appendix that lists guest farms, country hotels, restaurants and museums), you have only to turn its pages to be transported to a rustic Italy that few of us know, but all of us long for.
* 16 pages of finished dishes in full color
* 50 black-and-white photographs of country life
Lynne Rossetto Kasper's authoritative first book, The Splendid Table, explored the food and culture of Emilia-Romagna, Italy's culinary heartland. In The Italian Country Table, a collection of 200 regional recipes gathered from farmhouse cooks, Kasper once again provides cultural investigation and authentic, workable recipes. The resulting cookbook-cum-chronicle will appeal to anyone seeking delicious, down-to-earth dishes and an introduction to cherished culinary traditions.
Covering every course of an Italian meal--from antipasti through pasta to vegetables and, of course, dessert--the book weaves recipes with vignettes exploring, for example, Puglia's ritual drying of winter tomatoes. Included also are notes on buying tips, special cooking techniques such as glazing, and discussions of culinary moment, like the nature of a true risotto Milanese. The immediately inviting recipes include such temptations as Mushrooms Stuffed with Radicchio and Asiago, Hot and Spicy Eggplant Soup, Leg of Lamb Glazed with Balsamic and Red Wine, and Espresso Ricotta Cream with Espresso Chocolate Sauce. Kasper also offers a chapter on focaccia, pizza, and bread, as well as menus, shopping sources, and a useful discussion of ingredients. (Taste before you buy, and then pause, she advises. "Aftertaste can reveal how a food's been stored, careless production, or foods going from mature to over the hill.") Concluding with a guide to Italian guest farms, folk life museums, and places to eat and shop, the book is a comprehensive introduction to basic but inspired home cooking and the traditions that both contain and nurture it. --Arthur Boehm

Closeup of my dining room table
A table set for four. I actually rarely eat on this table. I've had it for over a year and probably sat it maybe 4 or 5 times, and no guests have eaten on it. I tend to entertain in the living room and we all eat elsewhere, but it's pretty no? I love the dinnerware, it's has a blue smoke hue and the goblets are a greyish smoke color. I also love beaded fruits as you can see and those darn things are kinda expensive too! Oh well, the presentation is worth it.
Closeup of my hors d'?uvre table
I just realized how posh I am. My goodness, yes, there is such thing as an hors d'?uvre entertainting table. It stores my serving ware, plate rack, at the bottom are my "collection" of cocktail napkins of different patterns. The table also bridges my Italian Chef theme from the kitchen into the attached dining room.

Southern Italian food—from bruschetta and tomato sauce to spaghetti and meatballs—is the most talked about and home cooked food in America. And the area's sleepy hill towns and rocky coastlines have become "it" destinations for in-the-know foodies and travelers from all over the world.
For more than a decade, award-winning cookbook author Arthur Schwartz delved deep into each region of Southern Italy, inviting himself into rustic home kitchens, making friends, and dining at the best local restaurants. Now, in The Southern Italian Table, he presents 130 recipes that celebrate local ingredients and simple flavor combinations behind authentic Southern Italian cuisine.
Follow Schwartz along country roads and city side streets to discover Neapolitan Pizza, Baked Tomato Sauce, and Walnut Pie from Campania, where tomatoes grow better than anywhere else in the world and walnuts ripen sweet and plump in the winter. From the mountainous region of Molise comes hearty Lamb Stew, and from the dry climate and wheat fields of Puglia hail dishes such as Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Charcoal-Roasted Artichokes. Calabria's diverse landscape inspires Pasta Disks with Shrimp, Fennel Seed, and Arugula and Lamb Chops with Black Olives. Risotto with Sausage and Smoked Cheese showcases Basilicata's famous pork sausages and scamorza cheese, and Sicily's Salt-Seared Swordfish with Garlic and Mint, Ground Pork Ragu with Chocolate, and classic Apple Cake exemplify the island's variety of culinary influences.
The Southern Italian Table is organized from antipasti (appetizers) to dolci (sweets), and written for the American home cook. With beautiful full-color photography, easy-to-find ingredients, and headnotes and sidebars that put the recipes in historical and cultural context, Arthur Schwartz's new cookbook will become a dog-eared favorite and a friendly guide to la vita italiana.
From The Southern Italian Table: Macaroni with Zucchini and Ricotta
I learned this dish from Gerardina Costanza, one of Cecilia’s amazing cooks and one of the women who assist me in my Cook at Seliano classes. This is a dish of few ingredients and very much about technique. The zucchini is cut two ways, into batons and finely chopped in a food processor. I especially like this sauce on elicone, "helicopters," whose large spirals catch the zucchini strips like no other pasta does. -- Arthur Schwartz
Ingredients
4 medium zucchini (about 1 1/2 pounds)
1 small onion
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup finely shredded flat-leaf parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 pound large macaroni, such as elicone, paccheri, or rigatoni
1 cup ricotta, at room temperature
Grated Parmigiano or pecorino cheese
(Serves six)
Directions
Cut 3 of the zucchini into fine strips, about 3 inches long by 1/4 inch. Chop the fourth very finely in a food processor. Slice the onion in half from root to stem end, then cut into fine strips in the same direction.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the zucchini strips until a few are just beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the onion and fry another 3 or 4 minutes, until the onion is wilted but still a little bit crunchy.
Add the grated zucchini and toss well with the already fried vegetables. Toss in the parsley. Fry only 1 minute, seasoning with salt and pepper. Transfer the vegetables to a large serving bowl.
Cook the pasta in at least 4 quarts of boiling water with 2 tablespoons of salt. Drain well and pour the pasta into the bowl with the vegetables. Add the ricotta and toss well.
Serve immediately, passing grated cheese at the table.

Foods that Alkalinize and Heal 1939 : About salt, and recipes for vegetable juices
were prepared for them by some soothing foods. Dr. Irving S. Cutter writes that gelatine contains substantial amounts of glycocol, which has been demonstrated to relieve fatigue and the feeling of depression that comes to patients in their so-called zero hours. Gelatine foods are also used extensively in the treatment of anemia. The celebrated Sylvia of Hollywood recommends many gelatine dishes in her health diets.
The following is a sample of a delicious and whole some dish:
Spanish Cream: Scald in a double boiler one quart of milk. Mix three egg yolks, one-half cup sugar or a small cup of maple syrup, and two envelopes of Knox gelatine which has been soaked in a half cup of water. Stir the mixture into the milk. Remove from fire and stand the container in cold water until cool. Flavor with a few drops of vanilla extract. Add the stiffly beaten whites of three eggs. Pour into individual molds and place in the ice box to set.
Undiluted evaporated milk has been used with gratifying results to form a "salve" for sore digestive surfaces so that other food could be taken without undue irritation. The "carrot juice man" took as much as three cans a day, with carrot juice, and ate a little unbuttered whole wheat bread when actually hungry.
Other excellent soothing foods are sago pudding, oatmeal with cream, and the vegetable cream soups.
ABOUT SALT
There is much evidence that salt is often responsible for excessive hydro-chloric acid in the stomach which burns and injures the tissues and gives rise to stomach ulcers - which may develop into cancer. Some of the most successful hospitals - notably the internationally famous Crile clinic in Cleveland - insist on salt-free diets for patients suffering from stomach ulcers. A good rule is to avoid salt when in any serious physical condition.
Too often* the benefits of foods such as spinach, greens, cucumbers and celery are nullified by the salt with which they are eaten. The use of salt stimulates the appetite for meats and leads to overeating of these foods, as well.
(From Dr. W. A. Evans in "How to Keep Well") "As in the case with sugar, people eat salt according to the dictates of their taste and with no other consideration in mind. In both cases the custom is resulting in considerable damage to health. Too much sugar in the daily diet is responsible for some of the puffiness of the face and ankles, some of the edema or dropsy, and some of the effects of kidney and heart disease.
"In the case of both, indulging in the condiment brings about changes in the taste and appetite which in turn call for more condiments. The salt and sugar tastes grow on us with indulgence and today the flavor which satisfies makes the food of yesterday seem flat, just as that of tomorrow will make the food of today taste insipid.
"Certainly there is a great need of marked change in our national customs and the tastes of which they grow as regards both sugar and salt. Our daily use of salt is excessive. We use it to cure and preserve many of our foods, and much that is put in for that purpose is not soaked out before we start to prepare the food for the table. In the kitchen the cook salts the foods as she cooks them, following her own ideas as to how much she should add. When the food reaches the table already over-salted the diner proceeds to add additional salt. The result is that we eat daily at least four times as much salt as we need - some say ten times as much....
"If we eat too much salt our bodies are watery; if too little they are too dry. If the body serum contains too much salt we are apt to carry this matter of being too wet too far and have it result in puffy ears, swollen ankles, or edema (dropsy)...
"It all sums up to this: The average person eats too much salt and is harmed thereby, even though he does not know it as he goes along, and may not for many years."

RECTANGLE DINING TABLES - DINING TABLES
RECTANGLE DINING TABLES - PINE TABLE TOPS - MARBLE TOP COFFEE TABLES.
Rectangle Dining Tables
- The first dining tables of which survivors remain are the type known as refectory tables. They are made usually of oak, and one of the earliest, at Penshurst Place in Kent, has a typical thick top of joined planks supported on three separate trestles.
- A table on which meals are served in a dining room
- A plane figure with four straight sides and four right angles, esp. one with unequal adjacent sides, in contrast to a square
- In Euclidean plane geometry, a rectangle is any quadrilateral with four right angles. The term is occasionally used to refer to a non-square rectangle. A rectangle with vertices ABCD would be denoted as .
- A quadrilateral having opposing sides parallel and four right angles
- a parallelogram with four right angles
Dining Room 3
Too bad, now you can see how badly the table needs to have the top refinished. I've used this poor table for everything, even paint stripper. The lily lights were bought about 16 years ago in Texas. I was in a craftsman-type frenzy. I'm pretty sure there was another set of the 3-light lily pad but I'm sure it got trashed between here and Texas. I have no one aesthetic, it's a real jumble.

Your floor plan needs to be opened up to be more inviting from the entry hall area. Right now your sofa blocks off the area, makes for a small space to walk around sofa and leaves the window bare. I understand that you were trying to define the LR space by putting the sectional that way. Opening it up makes for a better traffic flow from entry hall and other door way.
I like plan A the best. It balances out the room and looks inviting as you enter from entrance hall. If you don't have cable on the other wall get an extension long enough to run down the length of the two walls over to the wall where I have the TV placed.
Try adding an area rug to define the space.
Add panels hung high above the window frame and extend the rod past the window width. When you pull the panels apart, the inside edge of the fabric should rest on the frame. This will give the illusion of a bigger window and still allow all the light to come through. Get one of those decorative rods where you can add ring clips. Keep the curtains permanently open since you already have blinds on the windows. The panels would be for decorative purposes and to add color to the room.
A god economical source for curtain panels is twin sheets from Walmart ($4.00). They are long but just let them "puddle" on the floor. Another source is to look for fabric rectangular table cloths with a great print. Sometimes you can find those on sale cheaper than you can buy fabric.
I put in a round coffee table because I like round ones with sectionals, it keeps the area from looking so boxy. Your table is fine though.
In plan B the right part of the sectional would be pulled away from the wall. You could put a small sofa table behind it for decor and to fill the space. Use your floor lamp at that end of the sectional. You would then have room for a book case. However it looks a little crowded in this configuration.
krispelhome-FamRoom
Your arrangement is on the left. You really must free up the traffic flow pattern from the back door and kitchen area. The only way to do this is to float your furniture. The line you see running down plans A-C is the traffic flow pattern and should be left unobstructed.
I think the best furniture is a sectional. I favor plan B because it is angled like the entry way is, you can still see fireplace, you can enter from kitchen, back door, and DR walk through area. Having the TV in the corner near the window is not ideal but this plan works well. You can get a sofa table and put a lamp on it with decor. You will be able to get a cord to the lamp by going under the right part of the sectional.
Plan C looks like everything is larger than the other pics, but it is the same size. I must have just zoomed in before I copied and pasted into the group doc.
Plan C looks nice as far as good balance but there's the dilemma of getting lighting to the area without stringing cords across walkways. (oops, just noticed that something happened to the back door *shrug*. Supposed to be there though, obviously.)
Get a low height TV stand and put the TV on it then put it in the corner near the window. It should still be at a comfortable viewing level on a nicer/lower stand.
This space really calls for a circular rug. Getting a rectangular rug will make this space seem really boxy.

You know why I love Christmas so much? It's not just the lights and the presents -- it's the tree. Not Christmas trees in general, but specifically OUR tree. We have a few balls and such that we like, but most of our ornaments have some memory associated with them. Like this Santa and his reindeer. When I was around 6 or 8 years old, my sister and I painted these ornaments by hand. They were just cheap acrylic things, but I remember sitting there at the kitchen table painting them, and hanging them for the first time. This year, Claire got to hang them, and she insisted that Santa and all 4 pairs of reindeer hang together across the front of the tree. She is her mother's daughter. :)
You'll probably be seeing a lot of my ornaments over the next couple of weeks. And again next year at this time. :-P I love Christmas!
Christmas Flowers
A dear old friend of mine, Joseph, sent me this beautiful arrangement for our Christmas table. It has greens, carnations, daisies (?), and faux sugared apples. There was also a little box of chocolate and candies included. Petals and sweets - who could ask for a nicer present? :)

Dad Fairbanks
Taken for the Photo Challnge Group's theme Father
Ralph Fairbanks -- 'Dad' of the High Desert
by Barstow Steve Smith
from the Desert Dispatch
When I first started researching "Backward Glance" I was surprised to find the connections between different histories in the High Desert, and one family name that popped up a lot was Fairbanks. It got so bad that I noticed that a lot of my friends were also related to the Fairbanks. On April 24 Pat Schoffstall (a great granddaughter) invited me to a celebration of the life of Ralph Jacobus "Dad" Fairbanks, the patriarch of the Fairbanks family, and his founding of Fairbanks Spring in 1905. At the celebration I learned a lot about Dad's life and was amazed by all the interesting, humorous, and influential things he did in our desert.
Ralph Jacobus Fairbanks was born in 1857 to Mormon parents from Massachusetts. They were part of the Mormon migration that ended in Utah. Dad's family grew up in Payson, Utah. Dad was the family's ninth child. He went to school at Payson and, as was typical in the day, quit at the eighth grade. He did a number of different jobs there and at 16 began working for Payson Mercantile at a trade that he would do for a large part of his life. At the mercantile he once met Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon Church. During this time he numbered among his group of colorful friends: Tecopa Joe, son of Chief Tecopa of the Shoshone tribe, and another local boy named Leroy Parker, later known as Butch Cassidy.
After he worked in the mercantile for a bit he decided to go tromp around Nevada where he did many different jobs. In 1876 he got a job as a swamper with a wagon train that ran from Las Vegas to San Bernardino. This was the first time that he saw our desert that in the future would bear his mark.
In 1879 he went back to Payson and married Celesta Johnson, with whom he eventually had eleven children; eight grew to adulthood. He became a freighter then and also, on orders from the Mormon Church, homesteaded the town of Annabella, Utah. While there he continued working as a freighter, hauling logs for the new town.
As a young man Ralph Fairbanks was nicknamed "Long Man" (because of his height) and later he was given a nickname that stuck throughout his life. One of the jobs the church assigned to him was as a "talker" to the local Indians. He could speak both Ute and Paiute. The Indians saw that all the children and his wife called him Dad, so they figured that was his name and it stuck. Everyone, including his own brothers, began calling him Dad.
In 1900 he got a job grading a railroad bed for the Salt Lake City to Las Vegas Railroad. When the job was finished he started a livery stable in Las Vegas, but he felt that Las Vegas had no future and began looking elsewhere for business opportunities.
At this time the country was just starting to become electrified and copper was a big commodity. So Dad looked to Greenwater, California, for an opportunity. He found it in Ash Meadows, about 25 miles north of Greenwater. He realized there was need for a freight stop in the area and in 1905 he purchased some acreage around a spring that is now called Fairbanks Spring.
The family moved to Fairbanks Spring and quickly set up a small collection of tent businesses, In all they established a small general store, a diner and a few tents that they would rent out to travelers. It was at Fairbanks Spring that Dad's daughter Stella saw her first "otto"(automobile).
If you went to Fairbanks Spring Dad, would get your money somehow. If you came in and didn't need groceries, something to eat or a place to stay you might be able to lose your money playing poker with Dad -- he was an avid player. He was known to always carry his money in one jacket pocket and a gun in the other to keep games fair. It is rumored that some of the pots in Dad's games reached into the thousands. Also at Fairbanks Spring there was a minor humorous attraction in Dad's dog Donahue. Dad cooled his bottles of whiskey in a nearby spring and trained Donahue to go into the water and fetch the bottles. People were entertained by the enabler dog.
Dad also made money hauling goods to Fairbanks Spring, Greenwater and Las Vegas. Greenwater was the biggest town in the area. The main income for the town was copper mining and the big problem was they didn't have any copper ore. The whole town was a scam and only lasted 13 months.
Next week come back to read about what Dad Fairbanks did when Greenwater folded and about the first of the two towns he founded.
Last week I told you about the beginnings of Ralph "Dad" Fairbanks' businesses that he ran in Nevada and California.
This week I will tell you the story of one of the towns started by Dad.
When Greenwater folded it cut off Dad's business at Fairbanks Spring. He went looking for another opportunity and found it in 1908-1909 at a small siding on the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad several m

On January 24, 1923 P.J. Swanson and Chas. T. Lyons formed the Tire Mat and Bi-Products Company, Inc. to capitalize on the patent filed by P.J. Swanson for the invention of the tire-link mat. In July of 1924, Chas. T. Lyons, H.W. Bell and Howard R. Lyons formed a successor company called Durable Mat Company, Inc. and were shortly joined by C.L. Morris and Falcon Joslin, whom jointly comprised the management team that would established what is today Durable Corporation. Patented in 1923, Durite is one of the toughest, long lasting anti-fatigue mats available today. It helps create foot comfort and traction especially where people stand for long periods of time. The open mesh construction provides excellent drainage and dirt retention. Durite 108 mats are easily rolled up for thorough cleaning and convenient storage. They are perfect for in-plant applications at workstations, along assembly lines, in front of machines or in aisles and passages. Approximately 5/8" thick. Herringbone Weave, 14" x 22".

Fri., June 26
Yes, today was the last day I had to go to my school (and that solely to help stuff report card envelopes and move the remainder of the stuff I wanted from my offices to my car--we were dismissed at 10:20 a.m.!), but I didn't take any pictures there.
Instead, I am celebrating my freedom from school by using the time to get stuff done related to our upcoming move--because, yikes, it really is coming up fast! I took this photo of a dining room table and 2 chiars that we rarely use, and which are being put up on Freecycle (the photo was taken to act as part of the Freecycle ad). We used to have 4 of the lovely green vinyl chairs, but we used 2 of them as computer chairs on an ongoing basis & the seats finally cracked on them. These things are OLD--my mom thinks they got them before I was born--but still quite usable (I just don't want to use them myself anymore). If you would like them, I will gladly take them off Freecycle and give them to you, but you'd better act fast! Oh, and that white round top you can see leaning against the wall also comes with it--it is a 30" round top in case you find the 48" round brown top is too large for you.
