AutoSock HP 735 Winter Traction Aid, For High Performance Tires AutoSock - the simple solution to maximise grip on snow and ice. The secret: high performance fibers. A perfect temporary winter traction aid for vehicles. Quick and easy to fit and remove. Proven to improve cars' safety systems. Reusable. Approved by and sold to leading car manufacturers Unexpected winter weather can create driving conditions demanding more traction than conventional tires -- or even snow treads -- can provide. But tire chains are bulky to store and can be difficult to put on in cold, snowy weather. Now there is an easy-to-use alternative to chains: Designed in Norway, AutoSock is a new and innovative lightweight fabric-based, temporary traction aid for cars and trucks that is easy to mount and gets a grip on slippery surfaces as snow and ice. AutoSock, a high-technology textile tire covering, utilizes specially patterned fibers that optimize grip on slick surfaces by managing the thin layer of water on top of ice and snow. Through its weaving pattern and thousands of small fibers AutoSock clings to snow and ice, increasing vehicle traction, improving safety and adding to driver confidence. With AutoSock, you won’t experience the rattles and bumpy ride associated with tire chains, and it is approved for speeds up to 30 mph. AutoSock is easy to install following these simple steps: Stop the vehicle and apply the emergency brake, fit AutoSock to the drive wheels of the vehicle, starting at the top of the tire and working downwards. Then, stretch the elastic band over the top of the tire to the inside of the tire, tighten the crossing strap, and move the vehicle approximately 3 feet and pull the remainder of the AutoSock into position. AutoSock automatically self-centers when you begin driving. When you’ re back on snow-free roads, slip the AutoSock off and slip it back into the included storage bag. After use, AutoSock should be put back in the storage bag until the destination is reached. Then they can be machine-washed and put back in the bag, ready to go for the next snow or ice storm. Note: AutoSock is not meant for severe snow conditions, and cannot be substituted for chains for travel through mountain passes. The High Performance AutoSock accommodates performance tire sizes (typically OEM sizes for sports cars, SUVs, luxury cars, or +1/+2 wheel and tire aftermarket setups). It is also safe on aftermarket wheels and can be used with electronic traction control systems and ABS. For standard tires, try AutoSock Standard. (13) Mountain touring project Just getting started. Installed headset and fork, and trying to get the cockpit right. Fenders, f&r racks, panniers, kickstand, lights, whole 9 yards coming later. Not the tires I'll be using either. The frame is a 1996-97 Jamis Dakota AL, the first real mountain bike I ever bought, during the years Jamis made some of the best, under-rated, cross country frames - Dakota AL, Dakar Team, Dragon. It has been up and down NY state, Jersey, PA, North & South Carolinas, Georgia, even Louisiana. The frame does not come with rack mount eyelets, but I found a cheap QBP seatpost clamp with built-in rack mounts that will do the trick. The fork is a brand new Surly 1x1, but I may switch it out for a Long Haul Trucker fork (for 26" wheels). My 15 year old Mountain bike, fixed. I spend about $50 on gas with my van and hope to save at least half a month using my new bike more often feeling more comfortable and safer. I do not ride bikes for sport, but for a means to get around and have fun! This mountain bike has been good to me, is still in good shape and I am reluctant to let go of it, as the 18 speeds make riding that much easier, but for downtown flat riding I love my new Kona Africa bike. The count was conducted over the afternoon peak of 3 to 6 p.m. when journey to and from work trips are most prevalent and travel for other purposes are also typically quite high. Victoria plans a "greenway" project along Caledonia (the perpendicular street in the photo, looking into the background/westward). The cross street in the photo is Caledonia,. Both streets are secondary collector streets and traffic calming elements are already in place along Chambers. Caledonia is signed as a bike route but has no other improvements at this location, though bike lanes are in place for a block or so further to the west of the picture and additional improvements are planned for the corridor. Fernwood neighbourhood streets are somewhat disjointed, making vehicle travel less than ideal, and the new greenway plan aims to further calm traffic. Curb extensions will be constructed at the corners and bulb- outs added along the lock to break up the linearity of the road space. Corners with a gentle turn radius are often a problem for traffic speeds, encouraging drivers to carve through corners too quickly, posing a threat to pedestrians and cyclists, particularly at locations like this where streets are narrow (more so on sections of Chambers not visible in the photo). On street parking along Caledonia also helps to calm traffic, but during working hours, occupancy is reduced, giving the street a wider, more open look that encourages speeding. Mid-block curb extensions with landscaping will mitigate the traffic speeds and longer term plans for the corridor should further enhance the appeal for cyclists. The two roads connect at this T-intersection, though there are a couple of houses (behind me in the photo), are accessed across a driveway entrance on the remnant section of Caledonia, perhaps 50 metres or so long. One additional treatment that I will raise with our engineering department will be "sharrows" or shared-used arrows, that could aid in encouraging cyclists to position themselves to "take the lane" at the intersection to emphasize their intended direction, and remind motorists to keep behind them to reduce the potential problem of right turning vehicles overtaking left turning cyclists. A local resident sat with me for the duration of the count (she owns the house with the white picket fence at the corner at the right hand side of the photo (northwest). Although she was aware of the popular use of both streets by cyclists heading to and from the neighbourhood to downtown or, in the opposite direction, out to the University and campus of a local college, she was surprised at the very actual numbers recorded. In mid-August, the number of cyclists might actually be lower than the "high water mark" in September or October, May or June, when students are in school or university and college and bike trips in the neighbourhood could be higher. A high school is only blocks away (behind me and to the left of the photo), and with no other major streets to cross, as is an elementary school (again a couple of blocks away to the right and further west of the photo, again without major streets to cross, at least from this part of the neighbourhood). The afternoon peak hour traffic for bicycle travel has been established for the Capital Regional District that includes Victoria and its surrounding suburbs. The pattern of trips have been extracted from their "Origin and Destination" travel survey that uses a trip diary distributed randomly to residents across the region to record travel choices in mid-fall (late October/early November), to establish mode splits and time of day patterns. For bicycle travel, about 34% of daily trips are recorded in the 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. afternoon peak hours, when the highest concentration of journey from work trips are on the roads. The O/D study numbers and mode splits, it should be noted, were last measured in 2006, so some changes may be revealed by the update to be conducted in the same time frame in 2011 (a project I lobbied hard for as staff and political representatives sought to limit the scope of the study to reduce costs - and ultimately, the need for good data convinced decision makers to pursue the full study. At the end of the count, 234 bike trips were recorded through the intersection, and, extrapolating from vehicle count data collected by the city, this accounts for about 14% of all trips (excluding pedestrians) on the two streets. Given the pattern of bicycle travel (all day trips have been growing at a faster rate than peak hour, journey to/from work trips and the share of all day travel accounted for by cyclists may, indeed, be higher. The bicycle share of all day travel across the region is at 3.2% according to the 2006 numbers, higher in the urban core, but still lower BIXI BIXI is a public bicycle sharing system launched in May 2009 in Montreal. The system provides 3,000 bicycles and 300 pay stations located Montreal's central core.[1] Bike docks serve to house and lock bikes. They are modular units controlled by RFID wireless technology. A button notifies users of defective bicycles. Users can rent a bike using a subscriber key obtained through a long-term online subscription or an access code provided by the pay station. Pay stations are touchscreen-operated and only accept credit card. [edit] The bike The one-piece aluminum frame and handlebars serve to conceal cables in an effort to protect them from vandalism and inclement weather. The tires are filled with nitrogen and designed to be puncture-resistant. BIXI bikes are guaranteed for five years and designed to last a minimum of 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometres). [edit] Rates In order to use the system, users need to take out a subscription, which allows the subscriber an unlimited number of rentals. Subscriptions can be purchased at $5 per day (at a pay station), $28 per month or $78 per year. With a subscription, bike rental is free for the first half hour of every individual trip; an unlimited number of such free trips can be made per day. A trip that lasts longer than 30 minutes incurs a charge of $1.50 to $6 for each subsequent 30-minute period. The increasing price scale is intended to keep the bikes in circulation. Rates (not including the subscription)[2]: time first 30 minutes second 30 minutes third 30 minutes fourth and subsequent 30 minute periods rate free $1.50 $3.00 $6.00 [edit] Development of BIXI [edit] Stationnement de Montreal The project was included in the transportation plan for the City of Montreal, which aimed at encouraging active means of transportation, like bikes. The program is run by the city's parking authority, Stationnement de Montreal.[1] [edit] Other developers 8D Technologies[3], the 8D system used to run BIXI controls parking and bike rental and return from the same automated terminal. The system runs on solar energy to reduce environmental impact and maximize the system’s overall energy efficiency. Dallaire Design[4], the design of the physical components. The bicycle design incorporates an anti-theft mechanism. Cycles Devinci[5], the firm of mechanical engineers mandated to manufacture BIXI bikes. The company is located in the Saguenay region of Quebec. Robotics Design[6], created the “bike dock”. Morrow Communications[7] Michel Gourdeau suggested the name BIXI, a portmanteau of bicycle and taxi, which was selected by a majority of the people who participated in a contest organized by the city of Montreal. [edit] BIXI station network The location of a BIXI bike station is determined by several parameters, including population density, points of interest and activities (universities, bike paths, other transportation networks, and data on travel patterns of the general public. In Spring 2009, 3,000 bikes will be deployed in Montreal through a network of pay stations located mainly in the boroughs of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Ville-Marie, spilling over into parts of Outremont and the South West. A second phase of deployment is already being studied. [edit] Awards BIXI was ranked in 19th in Time magazines 50 Best Inventions of 2008. [8] BIXI also won the Eco-Design award from INTERIEURS FERDIE.[9] BIXI was awarded the 2009 Gold Edison for Energy and Sustainability.[10] [edit] Ottawa/Gatineau pilot project A trial implementation in Ottawa and Gatineau is taking place in the summer of 2009, with 50 bikes and four stations available until September 2009. The trial may lead to a permanent program which could start in 2010.[11] [edit] References bike lock rating Perfect Credit is the definitive guide to getting and keeping outstanding credit. Car crashes into bike race Taken from the AP Wire: Car crashes into bike race; one dead MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said. The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez. A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision. Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey. Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas. Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that. "We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved," consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said. The hill on the right leads you up to the ancient hill-town. I was glad to see that the lady of mature years didn't attempt to cycle up the right fork, because that climb might have tested a Giro di Italia pro cyclist? Finding no place to stay in Shiprock, I’d come another 30 miles of what would have been my Sunday ride. I took a little extra time Sunday morning before climbing on the bike, and decided to have Rod church. For Rod church, I read some Psalms and scribbled some thoughts. The last Psalm I read was number 126. “He has done great things…” There are very few roads to take one from Farmington, southeast to Santa Fe, so the ride consisted of four lane divided highway 550 until it meets with I-25 just north of Albuquerque. I hated the concept of driving all the way south of Santa Fe, just to ride back north again, so I looked for a little road to cut through the mountains. There were only two roads, both departed from Cuba, NM. The more direct route is 126, and I thought it apt to take the road named after the Psalm I’d read this morning. What’s more, Psalm 126 is a Psalm of Ascent, so it seemed quite appropriate to use that road to cross the mountains and make my own ascent into the town that has come to have deeply spiritual meaning for me. I stopped, gassed up, and took a biological break in Cuba, and then headed out of the tiny village on 126. About a mile out of town, I passed a sign that read, “caution, mountainous, unimproved road 8 miles ahead, may be impassable in winter conditions. “ The scenery was spectacular, the road, winding and 3 dimensional. After 8 miles of sheer motorcyclist bliss, I came upon the sign that read the same as the first but without the 8 miles ahead part. The sign was perched beside the road upon a gate that could be closed across the road if it had become impassable. The winding, climbing, falling bliss continued for nearly 12 more miles until the road turned to washboard surface dirt. Figuring that this was temporary, I continued slowly for a few more miles until the road turned muddy and rutty and slippery, and I nearly fell off my bike a few times. I pulled over to the side of the As the herd came closer, I realized how understated road condition is in New Mexico, and decided to follow C.S. Lewis’ advice and do an about face and go back to where I’d veered from the right path. By now I’d spent nearly two hours wandering in the wilderness, and was due for another biological break, so I stopped in Cuba again, at a different gas station to avoid having to explain to the attendant why I was back so soon. Unable to contain the joy of having ventured to the road less traveled and been turned back by a herd of cattle, I called my dad to tell him the story, and climbed back in the saddle and made my way to Santa Fe by the more common means of four lane highway. It should also be know, I suppose, that this is not the first time I was turned back on this trip. I was also rejected by a road in Colorado that didn’t lead me on nearly as long as this one did. In fact, it told me right away that I wasn’t welcome, but in my stubbornness, I pressed on until the road had to be more forthright. I descended the steep hill and switchbacks on washboards with my tail tucked between my legs. I’m taking donations for a R1200GS. Allison won’t let me sell the kids. Dirt Trail Forget driving and taking the taxi in NY, paying the fees, insurance, gas. FORGET IT!! ride your damn bike! Its faster, more convieniant, good for your damn health and trust me, you New Yorkers need it, and saves you some money too feed your kids and keep em' off the streets. Free bikes Park Hyatt Chicago's two guest bikes. They're stored with the valet in the garage and lent upon request (and the signing of a release form). In the pannier: a mini lock, a raincoat, another helmet, and a frame pump (broken, I found, as the tires needed air). The front derailleur and GripShift were also broken, although someone had whittled a pretty ingenious wooden shim to keep the derailleur on the middle chainring. Perhaps a simpler drivetrain would've sufficed -- there's a reason why Trek Limes fill many rental fleets. The quick releases had been replaced with bolts, which is a nice urban touch, but made adjusting the seat height impossible. I realized after leaving that the key didn't match the lock, so I ended up just riding up to Lincoln Park and back. I did appreciate the fenders on this snowy day. Crescent Fixie 0463 (See more of this bike in "My Bikes..." set) Early 70's Crescent (of Sweden) road bike. Fixed gear conversion. 531 DB frame (infamous toe-clip overlap), Nervex Pro lugs (but not fork crown), Titan stem (27.0!), English steel track bar, TA 150mm (yes!) cranks, inexpensive but nice looking, decent, wheelset (with orange pinstriping), mini fenders (as trimmings). I finally found a use for these cranks. With the toe-clip overlap, a slightly too-big frame and fixed riding pedal clearance and RPM's always a consideration, the 150's improve on all those points, but lack in power: good for flat land! Handles really well. Bikes parking Bikes and Scooters parking lot. (well organized...there are more chaotic ones on Shanghai's streets) The picture you can take on every street in Shanghai since bicycles are still widely used. besides the bicycles you'll see more and more scooters for the lazy people :-) Sometimes it's hard to pass them on the sidewalk since there are so many and the space is limited. This means when you wanna pass then you have to step down to the street...but be aware of the bicycles with people on who want to pass as well. Shanghai is an adventure and I am going out every day with seeing something I have never seen before...this still happens after 6 years... Photo taken during the farewell Alfre Shanghai Flickr Group meetup. Motor chain setup Be careful. I forgot that the motor chain is higher up on the frame than the regular cycling chain. Clothing got caught. I when down with my pants sucked into the engine. I was really concerned I was going to have to disrobe in public to get my pants loose. We eventually got a cover for the chain but I am still very cautious about what clothing I wear when riding. 1999-2005 Yamaha TT-R125 Dirt Bike Top End Engine Gasket Kit [For Stock Bore Size] Cometic Top End Gasket Kits Cometic MLS (multi-layer-steel) Head Gaskets are ideal for any combination of head and cylinder materials. MLS Head Gaskets are comprised of two embossed viton coated stainless steel outer layers and a variable stainless center layer. The variable center layer allows us to create multiple gasket thickness options. No re-torque is required after initial torque set. Rubber coated single layer steel base gaskets are viton rubber coated with a steel core and in some instances embossed. Cometic AFM material engine cover gaskets are made from a chemically blown compounded nitrile synthetic rubber that is bonded to an aluminum core. AFM material has a temperature resistance of over 250° F (121° C) and an 85% recovery while maintaining a strong torque retention. Gaskets made from AFM install dry and do not require a re-torque. Typical gaskets made from AFM include: cam chain gaskets, timing cover gaskets and water pump gaskets. Viton valve stem seals are made from hi-temperature Flouroviton with Teflon to prolong valve stem life and have a spring on the wiper to maintain a positive seal. Exhaust gaskets are made out of various materials, as required by model, such as armor clad, copper, graphite or spiral wound steel. Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator Go wherever life takes you and never get lost! The Garmin eTrex Vista handheld mapping GPS provides all the navigation tools you will need when you depart on your next adventure. This GPS comes packed with important traveling features including a barometric altimeter, an electronic compass, a detailed basemap of the Americas, and more! Garmin's eTrex Vista GPS receiver is smaller than its popular eMaps, but far more powerful. The Vista offers more memory, more features, and more convenience than any other GPS hardware in this price range. Don't be fooled by the product's small screen. Although smaller than the display used in products like the eMap, it has a higher resolution, letting it show more information more crisply. Small text can be difficult to read from a distance, but there are "big number" options available to make important data like your speed easy to read. It's this configurability that makes the eTrex Vista so special. Map page (shown with optional MapSource topo detail). You can easily set it up to suit your needs, regardless of the situation. Menu choices are highlighted and confirmed with a small joystick near the top of the unit, providing an elegant interface for navigating a formidable amount of options. Our only complaint is that the joystick used to access all the product's features is offset to the left, making it nearly impossible to control using only your right hand. When the joystick is held in your left hand, however, every control is within easy reach of your left thumb, freeing your right hand to hold a flashlight, walking stick, lantern, or anything else. This GPS unit's diminutive size and weight, not to mention its rugged design, make it an ideal hiking companion. It's waterproof in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes and is generously coated with shock-absorbing rubber. The barometric altimeter keeps a historical record of your ascents and descents, graphing elevation changes so you can easily track your progress. Elevation page The ability to store waypoints, points of interest, routes, and other information means you can blaze your own trail and always find your way back to camp. Best of all, 24 MB of internal memory makes it possible to store an enormous amount of data from Garmin's optional MapSource CDs, turning the eTrex Vista into an interactive road atlas. The memory isn't expandable, but 24 MB is enough to store street-level data for entire states in some cases. A serial cable is included for transferring the maps from your PC to the GPS unit, but it's terribly slow. A USB connector, sold separately, transfers data in a fraction of the time. The eTrex Vista was very accurate in testing, especially in a car on the open road. Accuracy diminished somewhat when the device was used in heavy tree cover or a dense urban area, but not enough that you're ever going to get lost or miss an exit. Used side-by-side with an eMap, the eTrex Vista kept up in update speed while displaying even more information on the moving map than the eMap did, cementing its position as perhaps the best all-around handheld GPS unit money can buy. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Small and light without sacrificing features 24 MB of integrated memory stores reams of detailed maps High-resolution screen displays sharp text legible even at extremely small sizes Cons: Can't be used one-handed when held in the right hand Smaller display is hard to read from a distance, as when the device is placed on a dashboard The Garmin eTrex Vista GPS receiver adds a barometric altimeter, electronic compass, the same base map as in Garmin's III+ and eMap models, and 24 MB of memory to Garmin's popular eTrex model. The altimeter displays your altitude and provides a graphic profile of your trip, while the compass provides bearing information. Housed in a silver case, this powerful 12-parallel-channel GPS receiver weighs only 5.3 ounces and measures 4.4 inches high by 2 inches wide. It literally fits in the palm of your hand. The king of the hill for memory and features, the Vista has it all and the memory to learn more. If you like the eTrex Summit, but want a lot more of everything that's useful, the Vista is second to none. The eTrex Vista's 24 MB of memory enables you to store more types of data--from topographical maps to roadside points of interest such as campgrounds, restaurants, and hotels--with a single download from Garmin's series of MapSource CD-ROMs (sold separately). These include MetroGuide USA, U.S. Waterways and Lights, and U.S. Topography. The built-in Americas base map displays cities, interstate highways, and U.S. exit information for North, South, and Central America. Address and business listings are displayed with data downloads. Additionally, it provides marine points of interest for lakes, rivers, and coastlines. The eTrex Vista has a front-panel rocker switch that allows for quick and accurate map panning. You can view maps on a liquid-crystal display with a resolution of 288 by 160 pixels. The eTrex Vista is waterproof to an IPX7 standard, so it can take an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform. Even while operating in forest conditions, the eTrex Vista will continue to maintain a tight satellite lock. The unit can store up to 500 user waypoints with graphic icons and boasts Garmin's own TracBack feature, which will reverse your track log and help you navigate your way back home. In addition, the eTrex Vista uses animated graphics that help you identify your marked waypoints quickly and easily. Garmin makes some of the accessories to help you integrate your GPS with your life and your priorities. Keep your GPS at the ready while protecting it from knocks and bumps with the carrying case. If you'll be on the road, you'll want to have access to the most detailed topographical maps of the United States available: the Garmin MapSource USA TOPO CD-ROM. And don't let the product's many abilities overwhelm you--train yourself in all the eTrex's ins and outs with a handy instructional video. The Garmin eTrex Vista comes with a PC interface cable, manual, and quick reference card. It is covered by a one-year warranty. (5) trek trip 33 Neat scene, I thought. Just another day for both. Trek Bike Trip 2008 029 Normal morning chaos...where's my bike...who took the last M&M's???? trek bike trips Trips shows, using color illustrations, the latest research, and bleeding-edge cultural analogies, how the still-mysterious hallucinogens may work in the still-mysterious brain. Written in language a general audience can understand, the book's tone is light and irreverent, yet at the same time deals with the drug culture in a serious way. Trips offers readers a rare look at the social, cultural, historical, and scientific phenomenon of psychedelics-through the eyes of artists who've grown up with them, regulators who control them, federal scientists who approve and fund their research, and scientists who've spent careers studying them—and in the process fills a growing need for truthful information about drugs. For a generation, people have been worried about false horrors attributed to LSD-chromosome damage (LSD doesn't; coffee and aspirin do), suicide, madness, and flashbacks (no such thing). There are, however, real problems associated with hallucinogens, which until now have been unknown, ignored, or untranslated from the scientific literature. Trips separates the facts from the falsehoods and provides, through the combination of Pellerin’s text and the artwork of legendary American artist Robert Crumb, a practical, entertaining, and yet rock-solid guide.
