a cog attached to a hub without a freewheel; it always turns with the wheel---no coasting
A direct drive system, used on track bikes, in which the chain ring and rear cog are linked, so that the pedals turn constantly while the bicycle is moving, and coasting isn't possible.
A fixed-gear bicycle (or fixed-wheel bicycle, commonly known in the USA as a fixie) is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast — the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving.

dawes fixed gear -- take-apart frame
Side view of the Dawes NewPin folding Fixie. Wheels are 451 Sun 13 rims mated to sealed bearing hubs. This fixie rides MUCH better than my Raleigh Twenty. The Dawes uses a standard ENGLISH threaded BB (24 TPI), standard 1" headset, and a fairly standard 28.6mm seatpost (just like the Twenty). This is my travel bike. I bought a used Oyster Samsonite suitcase from the Goodwill store for $4 and I can pack the bike in this suitcase in about 15 minutes. Remove pedals, remove seatpost, unbolt front brake from fork crown and remove handlebars completely. Remove wheels, uncouple frame, Not too bad!! The fact that the frame completely separates make it a lot easier to pack.
Fixed-Gear Bicycle
This fixed-gear bike was spoted outside a department store. Very cool indeed!
