Rhoda, this one is for you. And for all the other Mennonites out there who read my blog.

*****

Rhoda is a Mennonite. Mennonites are known for their plain and direct speech. “Let your yes be yes and your no be no” is one of their common admonitions. Those Mennonites. You won’t catch them stretching the truth.

After living with me for about a day, Rhoda pronounced that the Pentecostal equivalent of this Mennonite maxim is probably something along the lines of, “Let your yes be 'Absolutely!' and your no be 'Hell, no!'" When she heard my description of her injury and our trip to the ER on my birthday last year, which I enumerated to my mom on the phone (the story involved a huge gash on Rhoda's nose, a splinter the size of a baseball bat, and a brush with death when I nearly fainted while driving to the hospital), she laughed uproariously.

“Rhoda,” I replied after I'd hung up the phone. “Would it have been better to tell my mother that you suffered a mere scratch, warranting only a Dora sticker, and that the ER doctor patted you on your head before sending you on your way?”

“Well, I guess you could have just told her the truth.”

*****

On May 21, Rhoda was riding her bike home from work over lunch. She hit a bump, and a wooden box she was carting home in her bike’s basket bounced up and hit her in the face, connecting with her nose and drawing blood. She pedaled the rest of the way home and discovered that the wound, though only a centimeter in length, was fairly deep. I picked her up and brought her back to school, where we met up with a nurse at the health clinic on campus. Her verdict? “Go to the emergency room.”

So Rhoda and I headed to the ER in Harrisburg, with me at the wheel. Ever squeamish at the sight (or thought) of blood, I felt a bit light-headed and, at one point, told Rhoda that she should be prepared to take the wheel; I might faint. When we arrived, I pulled up to the entrance to drop off my still bleeding, injured friend. Rhoda took good care of her squeamish, directionally-challenged, Pentecostal patient. She turned to me and asked if I would be able to find the ER. I hesitated. Rhoda grinned. “Why don’t we just park the car and walk in together.” (I’d probably still be wandering around that hospital if she’d left me to my own devices.)

About two hours later, Rhoda emerged with a small “Dora the Explorer” band-aid firmly stretched across the bridge of her nose. I'm not sure if the doc patted her on the head; you'll have to ask Rhoda about that one.

*****

And there you have it. That is the entire and true story. Cross my heart.

Dora Kitchen

Dora Kitchen

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring ... Except Marna downstairs banging away at assembling the Dora Kitchen and Kevin trying to keep Paige corralled in her room!

Paige really likes Dora, and I like that she likes it. Paige also likes having tea parties and making pretend meals; so much so that she'll insist that we come sit with her. Marna and I knew that we had to get her a kitchen set for Christmas this year. The Dora Kitchen was the first present Paige got on Christmas Day. It was far, far, far from the last.

Among the many assorted gifts from friends and family are various DVD's, a Princess book set with audio CD, Dora bath time play set, some hand-made Princess costumes, Barbie dolls, a Cabbage Patch Kid, a baby doll, a nap-time Tigger, Mermaidia play set (with doll), a Paige mug, Fairy Wishes Dora, a Power Touch learning system, and much more. If I've missed your gift, I apologize, but please know that we appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness.

We just finished packing up Christmas for the year, even though Paige is still asking for more presents. Once we actually got it all put away, the next task will be to go through her old toys to make room for all these new ones. It's a good thing her birthday isn't until June!

Harley Days Barcelona (reportaje) 07

Harley Days Barcelona (reportaje) 07

(CERRADA) 2011 - Bikes

Harley-Davidson

Harley-Davidson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sportster
Main article: Harley-Davidson Sportster

2002 Sportster 883 Custom

Introduced in 1957, the Sportster is the longest-running model family in the Harley-Davidson lineup. They were conceived as racing motorcycles, and were popular on dirt and flat-track race courses through the 1960s and '70s. Smaller and lighter than the other Harley models, contemporary Sportsters make use of 883 or 1,200 cc Evolution engines and, though often modified, remain similar in appearance to their racing ancestors.

Up until the 2003 model year, the engine on the Sportster was rigidly mounted to the frame. The 2004 Sportster had a new frame accommodating a rubber-mounted engine. Although this made the bike heavier and reduced the available lean angle, it reduced the amount of vibration transmitted to the frame and the rider.[63] The rubber mounted engine provides a significantly smoother ride for rider and passenger. For a bike which isn't really thought of for long rides or trips, the smoother ride allows for this opportunity.

In the 2007 model year, Harley-Davidson celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Sportster and produced a collectors' edition called the XL50 1200 Custom, of which only 2000 were made for sale worldwide. Each motorcycle was individually numbered and came in one of two colors, Mirage Pearl Orange or Vivid Black. Also in 2007, electronic fuel injection was introduced to the Sportster family, and the Nightster model was introduced.

My only flat tire of the trip, a pinch flat during a rough stretch coming down off Mengel Pass because I didn't have enough air in the rear tire. I took this opportunity to switch (rotate) tires since the rear one didn't have much tread left.

This photo appeared in the following ideotrope albums:

Biking the Mojave Fall 2007 - Introduction
I biked through Death Valley in October 1996. It was 109°F at Furnace Creek. The area is beautiful, but it was way too hot at that time of year. I knew I wanted to come back on my bicycle when it was cooler. This year it worked out to take about 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. I ended up spending 18 days to cycle from Palm Springs to Las Vegas. I spent about half of that time in Death Valley NP. In Baker I met a group of cyclists on racing bikes with a support vehicle. They were cycling from Palm Springs to Las Vegas in 2 days. I saw a lot more desert than they did.
Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
I crossed the Coachella Valley on Ramon Rd. It was over 70°F, probably the warmest day of the trip. It wasn't 'til I turned onto Thousand Palms Rd. that I felt like I was heading out into the desert on my own. The San Andreas Fault system runs along the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The faults allow groundwater to rise to the surface resulting in a number of California fan palm oases. It's wonderful to see oases in the desert.
It was a 1300m climb on Berdoo Canyon Rd. to the Coachella Valley-Pleasant Valley saddle in Joshua Tree NP. I didn't see a single person or vehicle in Berdoo Canyon. Climbing out of Pleasant Valley I saw the first person, a fellow adventurer. Patrick was walking solo across Joshua Tree NP from west to east. That's a heck of a trek. That park is huge and has only one known spring. Patrick had set up two water caches before his trip.
Amboy Road and Mojave National Preserve
I bought enough food in 29 Palms to last 4 days to Baker. Heading east on the Amboy Rd. I met the only other touring cyclist of the trip. He had come down from Bishop through Death Valley NP, Baker, Kelso, Amboy - much the same route I was planning to take. When I met him, he had run out of food. I shared some almonds with him but didn't have much sympathy with his plight. The reason he didn't buy food in Baker was because there wasn't a health food store! Well, I told him there was a grocery store in 29 Palms, but it might not be up to his standard.
One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was experiencing the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert (lower, farther south) and the Mojave Desert (higher, farther north). Creosote bushes grow in both, but most other flora is limited to one ecosystem or the other. In the transition zones you can see a mix of vegetation. What I saw ended up being less dramatic than Washington County, Utah where the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range country, and the Mojave Desert all come together. Joshua Trees were the main ecosystem indicator for me. I knew I was climbing high when I started to see them.
I was surprised how much traffic there was on the Amboy Rd. It wasn't much, but a lot of the paved roads that I was on during the trip would have one car every 10-30 minutes and perhaps none all night. The only truly busy roads were the road north out of Baker (on a Saturday morning) and the Pahrump-Las Vegas superhighway which has a wonderful bicycle lane.
I climbed Sheep Hole Pass to get into the Amboy Valley. It was in the Amboy Valley where I became accustomed two aspects important to cyclists in the Mojave:
Distances are deceiving. You can see really far. It takes much longer to cross these valleys that it appears that it would.
The slight inclines up alluvial fans or other fill climb a lot more than they appear to. In Colorado I'm not accustomed to seeing the whole climb since there are usually canyon climbs here. Leaving Amboy, for example, I climbed over 3000 ft. on a slowly rising alluvial plane. It took hours.
I enjoyed time off the bike to walk out to and up Amboy Crater. The following day I climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes. And one day later I climbed one of the cinder cones east of Baker. I enjoyed having a diversion each day. Each of those areas is beautiful in its own way. The creosote bushes in the Amboy Valley are particularly green because of the shallow water table. Kelso Dunes are simply fantastic, and the cinder cone area with over 30 cinder cones and not another person felt like another planet.
In Baker I bought enough food to last 10 days and ate at the Mad Greek at my brother's recommendation. I had taken a rest day the previous day because of rain, and Baker was a bit flooded. Folks were out pushing water around with brooms. At the store the locals were telling each other how much their roofs leaked.

Ricoh 500G Rangefinder

A very fine small rangefinder camera. Ricoh was never a real force in camera brands. Too bad, they built some very well-constructed examples and were responsible for a variety of interesting models with innovative features. This 500G's rangefinder still works. The only drawback to this camera is the incredible amount of foam inside the film loading area. Most cameras use a thin amount to block light; this guy has enough to pad a bike helmet.

Had 'em on for a few days but as good as they look, they're just too low. Hands on the grips gives me a 75 degree back angle. I don't think I can handle anything between 45 and 90. It just ain't right.

I find my self rollin' with hands either side of the stem, just like how I roll XC with flat bars, but without convenient brake/shifter access.

I'll hopefully get some Dimension Super Wide cruiser bars on there before garage sale season hits.

Had 'em on for a few days but as good as they look, they're just too low. Hands on the grips gives me a 75 degree back angle. I don't think I can handle anything between 45 and 90. It just ain't right.

a Close to a Perfect Day

a Close to a Perfect Day

description of this adventure to come. one wild day on martha's vineyard with my roommate megelizabeth, who is amazing.

ok here we go:

so it was a five-dollar trip to the vineyard through our school. highlights involve megan making out with a baby named caroline on the ferry, discussing the inadequacies of the movie titanic, and deciding it would be a good idea to rent a moped to zip around the island. at first the mopeds seemed a little pricey, but we eventually found a small, sketchy vendor that was cheaper than the rest. we were mostly seduced by the sexy woman with the sexy accent advertising for them in front of the shop. she wanted a credit card number even though we were paying cash... hmmmmm? anyways, we were led to the back by a small, spanish man who instructed us to pick out some hideous imitation crocs for our feet, and helmets. we followed his instructions, and headed out towards the mopeds. he quicky sent us back in to get motorcycle helmets instead of bike helmets. then he posed this question: have either of you ever driven a moped before? and that's when our stupidity and improper planning came crashing through the ceiling onto our heads. we looked at each other, and said no.... i considered asking for a refund right there, but that image of the two of us cruising around like badasses was too fantastic to resist. so he began instructing us how to turn the lime-green monster on, and how to ride correctly. i was ready to grab the handlebars and go, but he noticed that my feet didn't reach the ground as i sat there quelling pangs of nervousness, and he decided i wouldn't be driving.

so meg had to drive the whole time, with my fat ass on the back. she took the moped for a couple of spins around the block, and eventually decided that she was comfortable enough not to kill us both. now you're probably thinking - wow you two are pathetic, not being able to drive a little moped - well screw off it's hard your first time. anyways, we putted around on a straightaway at about 5 mph for a few miles, getting unsought attention as we were two little girlies, one straddling the other on a machine, going ridiculously slow with our panties exposed as our skirts (also poor planning) flapped in the wind. it was quite a sight to behold. as the day went on we both proceeded to shit our pants in terror as buses rushed past us, and get good and sunburned.

a woman about 40 came up to us at one point, and told us that she was a mother, worried for our lives. then she took our picture for us. we spent some time in edgartown and oak bluffs, and spoiled an oily european couple's privacy on a small beach where we swam in the warm, clear water. as megan gained more confidence with the moped, and the speedometer reached 35 mph, i realized that a boy i know died his first time on a motorcycle a week ago, and i got a little nervous again. especially when meg's skirt flew up in the breeze and she fussed with it as the moped leaned toward oncoming traffic. before heading back home on the ferry, we made sure to ride on the famous flying horses carousel with some very young children and their parents. neither of us got the brass ring, but i would have felt guilty stealing the thunder from some four-year-old. i already had my squished penny from one of those penny-squishing machines, so i was pretty satisfied anyways.

on the bus home from the ferry, we discussed how megan majors in high-class prostitution at school with a boy from my drawing class who now thinks that megan and i are secret lovers. we arrived home and had pizza from good eats and thought about our wonderful day :)

Fame & Glamour Museum Tour 6/23/2006

Fame & Glamour Museum Tour 6/23/2006

CD F: 3536 Photo: Bike & Boa Fuzz. Fame & Glamour Museum Tour led by Carye Bye (The Bathtub Art Museum Director) for Pedalpalooza. Fifteen cyclists gathered at the Laurelhurst Theatre to embark on a journey flirting with the famous. A few feathered boas, fancy shirts, and sunglasses amongst us. Our first stop was the amazing Velveteria Museum of Velvet Paintings (NE 28th & Glisan) run by Caren & Carl - We oohed and aahed at the Velvet poodles, John F, Kennedy with piercing blue eyes, and took quiet turns in the naked lady backroom parlor. We also almost got to see a real deal making on a clown velvet painting, but with the large crowd, the seller was asked to come back later. Out back in the warm sun, we pedaled through Laurelhurst, cruising by mansions, and through the park, then we took a quick look at a yard sale before heading down Peacock lane to Mike's Movie Madness (SE 43rd & Belmont). Mike gave us a detailed tour of all the amazing movie memorabilia he's collected from film studio auctions - Barbara Streisand's Owl & Pussy Cat sexy pant-suit, Blue Velvet's Ear, Orson Welles Touch of Evil Suit. At the end of the tour, we came to a small Bathtub Art Museum instore display of about a dozen postcards of celebrities & cartoon characters in bathtubs (Betty Boop, Marilyn Monroe, Laurel & Hardy…) And our last stop, dessert! (soy icecream & fresh berries) at a glamorous apartment above the Avalon - The "Movie Stars in Bathtubs" book (1975) was passed around. As well as there was another postcard disply of glamorous tubs & women. Stories of Fame broke out (We had put on name tags of someone famous we'd met or seen). The best by far was Carl's - who wrote Tonya Harding - Soon the past was spilling out, who knew, Mr. Larson was a child ice skater brushing elbows will all sorts of skate princesses & princes when he lived on the East Coast.

"Catch Up!" back

Created July 2008

"Catch Up!" Leisure Motors

When it first opened its doors in 1955, "Catch Up!" was as an eccentric novelty diner competing in San Francisco's booming fast food market. Business was oustanding for several decades until the late 90s, when the general public's increased awareness of healthy living combined with an unfortunate incident invloving a rat and some French fry oil forced Catch Up to shut down in 1998. The building was purchased in 1999 by the eccentric billionaire Cromwell "Pockets" McMurray, who ultimately decided to maintain the building's quirky charm by keeping its facade and simply redirecting its business focus. Thus, the landmark Catch Up went from selling French-fried rats to motorcycles and mopeds.

STOLEN: This blue Bike Friday Pocket Lllama. Stolen from the bike rack in front of the Safeway at Potrero Ave. and 16th St. in San Francisco on the night of December 7, 2006, at approximately 11:00 PM. The bike differs a bit from this photo: no rack, the water bottle cage is on the seat stem, it has a newer handlebar stem that's completely vertical and entirely blue, and it has a wooden bell instead of the one pictured here.

(Of course the thieves are likely to alter what they can of the bike. Numerous bicycle "chop shops" operate with impunity in this city.)

Keep an eye out for it and let the SFPD and me know if you see it.

Descente Swiss World Cup Jacket - Black Electric Red Action G L

Descente worked with the Swiss Ski Team to design a jacket that is worthy of the world stage. The Descente Men's Swiss World Cup Jacket offers skiers waterproof and breathable protection that actively works to keep you warm on the slopes. A layer of eco-friendly Heat Navi material is sandwiched inside this jacket between the insulation and the inner lining fabric. It is made from a special inorganic carbon material mixed into the cross section of a flat, recycled polyester fiber. This new-age fabric absorbs almost the entire spectrum of the sun's rays and converts that energy into heat you can feel radiating against your body. It works when you're in direct sunlight and even under cloud cover, helping to keep you warm in all weather conditions. Lightweight, compressible Thinsulate insulation is made with microfibers that are 10 times smaller than other similar fibers, thereby trapping more air in less space, keeping you warm and reducing the bulk of this ski jacket. Constructed with fabric utilizing Negative Ion technology (Ion-Bodies+), fibers are impregnated with powdered minerals to generate negative ions that are said to have a positive effect on the body and mind, making you feel refreshed as if you just walked by a waterfall in the forest. Fully loaded with snow sport features, this winter coat has a snow skirt, adjustable cuffs, a stowable storm hood and multiple pockets to stash small essentials. Enjoy a piece of world-class ski wear when you pull on the Descente Swiss World Cup Jacket for men.

Oh, why won't Marvin K. Mooney just please go now? In this 1972 classic for "beginning beginners," Dr. Seuss devotes his rhymes to budging the reluctant young Marvin K.: "The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." But despite his impatience, our narrator certainly isn't short of ideas on how Marvin could make an exit. "You can go on stilts. You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish." Seuss's ever wacky illustrations accompany each new mode of transport, from balloon to broomstick to Bumble-Boat. And if those who are just learning find a word they don't know, chances are Seuss has simply made it up to fill out this ear-pleasing, easy-to-read text. This book is yet another fun and euphonious entry from the good doctor, a silly primer for budding rhymers and readers. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Stump Jump

The old stump jumper. A trusty truck of a bike, good with a trailer or heavy load. Much fun for meandering through alleys and urban exploration. Not much fun for crossing town. Still hemming and hawing over if I should build a big old custom rack for it. Making it too nice would obfuscate its original intent.
