It was the country home of financier and philanthropist Otto Kahn. Built by Kahn between 1914 and 1919, it was and remains the second largest private home in the United States, comprising 127 rooms and over 109,000 square feet (10,100 m2), as originally configured. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.[1] It is currently a historic hotel with 32 guestrooms and suites on the upper floors of the mansion, a popular wedding venue for socialites, celebrities, and dignitaries, and the backdrop to many photoshoots and Hollywood productions. The estate also offers historic mansion tours of the estate and gardens. [edit] NameThe name Oheka is an acronym of its original owner's name, Otto Hermann Kahn. [edit] History In 1905, a previous country home of Kahn's, Cedar Court in Morristown, New Jersey, was virtually destroyed by fire. In constructing Oheka, Kahn determined to build a fireproof building, so he had his architects, Delano and Aldrich, design the building out of steel and concrete, making it one of the first totally fireproof residential buildings. In constructing the home, two entire years were spent building an artificial hill on which to place it, giving it views of Cold Spring Hills and Cold Spring Harbor.[2] Kahn commissioned the Olmsted Brothers to design the estate's grounds, centered on a formal axial sunken garden in the French manner, of clipped greens and gravel in parterres and water terraces, screened by high clipped hedging from the entrance drive that ran parallel to the main axis. Other features of the 443-acre (1.79 km2) complex included an 18-hole golf course designed by golf architect Seth Raynor, one of the largest private greenhouse complexes in America, tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, a landing strip, orchards, and stables. Several years after Kahn's death in 1934, the estate was sold. After the sale, it was used for several purposes, including as a retreat for New York City sanitation workers. In 1948, Eastern Military Academy purchased the castle and 23 acres (93,000 m2) of its property, bulldozed the gardens, subdivided the rooms and remained until the school closed in 1979. For the next four years, the building remained empty, during which time over 100 documented arson attempts occurred, all of which the building survived, demonstrating Kahn's success in building a fireproof building. As of 2010, the golf course and stables are a part of the Cold Spring Country Club and the greenhouse complex operates as Otto Keil Florist. Much of the remainder of the property was developed into single-family homes. [edit] Restoration Gardens of Oheka CastleIn 1984, Oheka was purchased by Gary Melius, a Long Island developer. Melius undertook the largest private residential renovation project in the United States to restore the house, which was in a state of almost total disrepair, and recreate the gardens from the original Olmsted plans. In 1988, unable to continue financing the massive project, Melius sold the property to Hideki Yokoi for $22.5 million.[3] Ten years later, following a lawsuit, the building passed to one of Yokoi's daughters and her husband.[4] They were unable to sustain the property themselves, so Melius reacquired it under a long-term lease and later re-purchased the estate, operating it as a weddings and events venue, luxury hotel, and conference center.[5] The estate also offers mansion tours. Celebrities who have been married there include Kevin Jonas, Joey Fatone and U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner. [edit] In popular cultureOheka served as partial inspiration for Gatsby's estate in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.[6] In the 1941 film Citizen Kane, Oheka was used in some shots to portray the fictional Xanadu.[7] The castle is one of the main settings on the television show Royal Pains. In 2009, Kevin Jonas from the band Jonas Brothers married his girlfriend at Oheka. In 2010, Oheka was the set of the fictional Avalon Castle on the soap opera, As The World Turns. In 2010, it was used to film a scene in "It's Kind of a Funny Story". 3400 New Hyde Park Road Renderings 3400 New Hyde Park Road is a proposed office complex to be developed by the partnership of Castagna Realty and TRITEC Real Estate Company. The buildings are strategically located between the Long Island Expressway and the Northern State Parkway in North Hills, New York just 18 miles from the Mid-Town Manhattan.The site is visible from two of Long Island’s most heavily traveled roadways with more than 350,000 cars traveling past the building each day. 3400 New Hyde Park Road is located on the “Gold Coast” of Long Island which includes some of the wealthiest communities in the Nation including areas such as Manhasset, Great Neck and Kings Point. Two large prestigious hospitals, North Shore University Hospitaland Long Island Jewish Medical Center are located within 5 minutes of the site. In addition, Deepdale Golf Club is immediately north of the site. The proposed building (Phase 1) will provide 95,000 square feet of class A office space and 416 car parking (a 4.4/1 parking ratio). The building has been designed by the Spector Group, Long Island’s best known architectural firm. If I had to pick a “sweet spot” for early half eagles (or maybe even for all early gold) it would have to be the AU58 grade. Early gold that is properly graded in AU58 holders can have really nice eye appeal, yet it is priced at an amount that is often significantly less than coins in MS60/MS61 holders. Let’s look at this 1810 half eagle which is a perfect example. It shows no real signs of having circulated; just what used to be referred to as “cabinet friction” on the high spots. The color is lovely with rich green-gold centers framed by fiery natural reddish-gold at the borders; the reverse has a deeper overall hue than the obverse. Both sides are free of detracting marks and a good deal of luster remains. 1850-C $2.50 NGC AU58 Mintage: 9,148 Variety 1. Late die state with very heavy clashmarks seen at the central obverse and reverse. Despite the late die state, the strike is quite sharp with most of the central details fully visible. The slightly prooflike surfaces have taken on nice reddish-gold color with the deepest hues seen in the left field. There is minor wear only and it is primarily limited to the high spots. The 1850-C quarter eagle is very rare in full Uncirculated and at less than half the price for an MS61, a properly graded AU58 seems like good value to me. In this case, both of these were restored as much as possible given what I had to start with and my skill level at the time. The Fuji version I personally scanned about 2 years before the Minolta version. Some points of comparison for these two include PPI resolution, density range, color range, film curvature focus, shadow and highlight clipping, grain processing, dust and scratch removal (IR or lack thereof), and others. Also this goes to show that if you want it done right, you absolutely must do it yourself! There are so many variables that go into these things, you almost have to write them down to remember what to look for. I wish i could afford a Hasselblad Flextight, but I'm not even sure if the HB even does infra-red cleaning. These may be oversaturated, but really it's just a matter of taste. I have another scan of this that's less saturated. By the way, it is my express opinion that the 5400-II is the holy grail of shadow and highlight detail, with it's impressive density range. Emulation Test #2 Picked up a bunch of new Lightroom presets today so I'm just testing a few out. They are film emulator presets, designed to mimic the look of various types of films. This one is called "Fuji Provia 100F Pro". Its quite a difference when compared next to the other Kodak Gold 100 preset (next shot in my stream). Very interesting to see the different feels each film type gives. A few weeks ago Hayden had a strange growth on his gums removed. Our vet sent it away for a biopsy and we just received the pathologist report a few days ago - it was a carcinoma. On Saturday we went to our vet for chest x-rays, blood work and urinalysis. Thankfully, everything came back normal. On Friday, we are going to Boston to meet with a veterinary oncologist.
