THE BSA GOLD STAR. CLASSIC CAFE-RACER.

The Gold Star was a motorcycle made by BSA from 1938–1963. They were 350 cc and 500 cc single-cylinder 4-stroke production motorcycle known for being among the fastest bikes of the 1950s. They were hand built, with many optional performance modifications available, and came from the factory with documented dynamometer test results, allowing the new owner to see the horsepower produced.

The most prized model was the 500 cc DBD34 introduced in 1956, with clip-on handlebars, finned alloy engine, polished tank, 36 mm bell-mouth Amal carburettor and swept-back exhaust. The DBD34 had a 110 mph (177 km/h) top speed. The Gold Star dominated the Isle of Man Clubmans TT that year. Later models had a very high first Gear, enabling 60 mph (97 km/h) plus before changing up to second.

Production ended in 1963

Gold Star Coaches, St Asaph, N. Wales, 1981

North Wales independent, Gold Star of St Asaph operated a large number of old and interesting vehicles. During the 1970s, the company added several ex GMPTE buses to the fleet; squeezing a few more years use out of the seasoned veterans before disposing of them.

UBN912, an ex Bolton Corporation, Leyland PD3 still wearing the remnants of its GMPTE livery, stands alongside END846D, an ex Manchester City Transport, Atlantean in what was a typical scene at Gold Star’s yard. To the right of the picture is JJJ567D, a vehicle that had originally been new to Timpson's Coaches of Catford, London. Its mundane looking Duple (Northern) coach body gives the impression of it being a Bedford, but it was in fact an AEC Reliance.

7th November 1981.
