Gold Testing Equipment
- Gold buyers test gold to determine the actual karat weight of the gold. This can be done with an electronic gold tester, or an acid test. If a piece is suspect both tests may be used. Gold is tested because not all gold is correctly marked, or genuine. See Buying Gold Karats
- The gold content or karat can be tested in a piece of jewelry by rubbing the item to be tested on a testing stone, similar to slate (slate is sometimes used) and using Hydrochloric acid, in different strengths to determine the gold content.

This is to show how important equipment choice is when archiving images or restoring damaged originals.
In this case, both of these were restored as much as possible given what I had to start with and my skill level at the time. The Fuji version I personally scanned about 2 years before the Minolta version.
Some points of comparison for these two include PPI resolution, density range, color range, film curvature focus, shadow and highlight clipping, grain processing, dust and scratch removal (IR or lack thereof), and others.
Also this goes to show that if you want it done right, you absolutely must do it yourself! There are so many variables that go into these things, you almost have to write them down to remember what to look for.
I wish i could afford a Hasselblad Flextight, but I'm not even sure if the HB even does infra-red cleaning.
These may be oversaturated, but really it's just a matter of taste. I have another scan of this that's less saturated.
By the way, it is my express opinion that the 5400-II is the holy grail of shadow and highlight detail, with it's impressive density range.
Emulation Test #2
Picked up a bunch of new Lightroom presets today so I'm just testing a few out. They are film emulator presets, designed to mimic the look of various types of films. This one is called "Fuji Provia 100F Pro". Its quite a difference when compared next to the other Kodak Gold 100 preset (next shot in my stream). Very interesting to see the different feels each film type gives.
