9 months Since last month's update was quite short, I will elaborate some more this time. The eczema is under control, as you can see. We still have to use the hormonal ointment (Elocon) on a weekly basis, and use vasiline-parafine every day. The latter is very greasy stuff, but does wonders for her skin and body. Then we had a fysio appointment last week as well as one with the consultation-bureau. Both were good-news visits. The physiotherapist was impressed with Robin's legs, which now appear almost normal with respect to the muscle-tension. She uses them very actively and is able to bring them very close to her face. All very good. The consultation-bureau notices some delays, but is expecting that things will work out. Robin is a bit light, but otherwise normal. She now weighs 7 kilos (15.4lbs) and is 69 cm tall (27.1in). On the interaction front things are really great, and as you can see from the pictures in this photostream Robin is a very happy baby. She responds to her name, or the sound of her name. If we give her the dummy, she puts it in her mouth all by herself. And she's into books. Turning pages is one of her favorites things to do, sitting upright in her chair. We continue to 'exercise' her, mainly her back and upper body. By turning her on her belly, sitting her in the chair, and walking with her in the baby-bjorn. She really wants to be able to sit, something we can tell from how she tries to move her head up and her body forward when she rests in our arms. Robin is and will continue to face challenges. But for a baby that was born with a symptomatic congenital CMV infection, she is a small miracle. They did, however, explain His virgin birth and how He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit--that He had no earthly father. But that didn’t help me understand where He was before He was born. They also explained that after His death on the cross He rose again. So I automatically assumed He was born about 2,000 years ago and still alive today. In other words: I assumed He had a beginning but He doesn’t have an end. It wasn’t until my late teens, thanks to Dr. Charles Stanley of In Touch Ministries, I understood that our Lord had no beginning just as He has no end. And that’s why I chose John chapter one to include for this Christmas shot. I will leave you with Oswald Chamber’s words: My Utmost for His Highest, December 25, 2008 His Birth and Our New Birth ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us’ —Matthew 1:23 His Birth in History. ". . . that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35). Jesus Christ was born into this world, not from it. He did not emerge out of history; He came into history from the outside. Jesus Christ is not the best human being the human race can boast of— He is a Being for whom the human race can take no credit at all. He is not man becoming God, but God Incarnate— God coming into human flesh from outside it. His life is the highest and the holiest entering through the most humble of doors. Our Lord’s birth was an advent— the appearance of God in human form. His Birth in Me. "My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you . . ." (Galatians 4:19). Just as our Lord came into human history from outside it, He must also come into me from outside. Have I allowed my personal human life to become a "Bethlehem" for the Son of God? I cannot enter the realm of the kingdom of God unless I am born again from above by a birth totally unlike physical birth. "You must be born again" (John 3:7). This is not a command, but a fact based on the authority of God. The evidence of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that "Christ is formed" in me. And once "Christ is formed" in me, His nature immediately begins to work through me. God Evident in the Flesh. This is what is made so profoundly possible for you and for me through the redemption of man by Jesus Christ. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: This photograph is of a house near where I used to live that its owner really knows how to it house for Christmas! Alex, Jane & Baby Finn Finn Anderson Hendra arrived on 9/11/08 at 1.35am. She was 7lb 11 and is utterly gorgeous. It was a wierd labour with about 10 hours of contractions every 10 minutes through the night on Friday, then they slowed right down for a few hours (although not enough for me to sleep for more than 2 hours),before restarting on Saturday afternoon, so I was already knackered from a whole night of it before the real thing started (particularly because I'd found I could only manage the pain if I was standing and walking around). Thank goodness for the yoga preparation. The camel walking was fabulous and I could feel lots of the exercises really paying off during that stage. All went well from Saturday though. We went to Edgware birth centre late Saturday evening once contractions were more frequent. The midwives were utterly fantastic and reassuring so despite being really tired I managed to carry on with just the TENS machine and yoga breathing for a while. Thanks Kirsty-what can I say- think the whole thing would have been a totally different experience without the constant refrain going through my head about lengthening the out breath!! I got in the pool at about 1am once the contractions were really very close together and I was struggling to manage the pain-and amazingly Finn was born within half an hour. I couldn't quite believe it when my partner Jane was suddenly saying in an awestruck way that she could see Finn's head! When I lifted her out the water she still had the sac around her- incredible but quite alien sight! Absolutely lovely to see her perfect little face appear as the midwife peeled it off her. Then I just sat in the pool with her for a while, while she quietly took in the world, and me and Jane gazed at her! Had to have a few stitches and obviously knackered but all in all a very positive experience. Edgware really are amazing. Their approach when we were phoning for advice early on, and their incredibly confident and reassuring style when we got there made it all feel possible and the after care was incredible-bit like being in a B&B with a lovely room and double bed for us all and tea and toast being brought to us for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch. They encouraged us to stay for a long as we wanted and made sure we were really comfortable with breast feeding. Again their support was so reassuring we had none of the anxieties we thought we might have about the next stage of actually having a baby at home! We came home in the afternoon on Sunday after we'd rested and me and Finn had been checked out, and now just trying to settle in to our new way of life and of course no sleep! It's hard to believe she's two. She has been for a while now but for some reason it's just now hitting me what that really means. I remember the day I found out I was pregnant with her. I sat and wondered and prayed for her. I wanted a girl so badly, so did my husband. I remember the day I felt her move for the first time at a friend's birthday party. I remember the impatience I felt having to wait for the ultrasound and begging Jared to take me to the mall a couple of weeks early so I could know as soon as possible. As soon as those words left the tech's mouth "It's a girl!" my heart skipped a beat and raced with joy. I remember buying her little pink clothes and little pink blankets. Everything had to be just right for her (as it did with all my children but this was my little girl, first and only). As Jared and I discussed girl names we had to have the right one, what we thought we loved no longer seemed to fit or be good enough. Mya Riley. The name seemed perfect when we put them together. I remember driving to the hospital early in the morning after saying goodbye to the boys and reminding them they'll soon have a baby sister to look after. I remember her first cry, her first look up at me, her little fingers wrapping around mine, her smell, her cry and her every beauty. I cried before I even held her for the first time. I finally had what I had always wanted in my arms and she was all mine. She melted her daddy's heart and had him eating out of her little hand from the first day. She fit so perfectly into the piece of my heart that had been missing. It was as if she had always been there without me knowing it. Even when we brought her home, she eased into our lives so easily. She has a strong will and doesn't back down from a fight. I can only imaging the discussions we'll have in the future, the worries and the mishaps we'll encounter. She has my spanish blood and the temper that goes with it. But this is my little girl. She's more special than I could ever put into words and means more to me than you could ever imagine. She's my little angel, our little princess. She is my joy and my heart's delight. Rocking Ani, or Baby-Eating Animals These adorable picture frames let you put a picture of your baby (or husband, cat, whatever) in the mouth of a cute animal. I don't know why the call them "Rocking Ani", but my guess is that Ani is an abreviation of Animal (the Japanese love to abbreviate words), and Rocking might be an attempt to convey the idea of rocking your baby to sleep. Seems to me it's hard to be rocked to sleep if you've been swallowed by an elephant, pig, or tiger, but that's just me. (Update: actually, these are more likely to be bobblehead-like photo frames, but I can't tell from the photo). They also had keychain-sized versions of these, of which I bought several (pig, chicken, & penguin). I noticed that the Container Store in Texas was also selling these keychains, but if you can't find one, I might send you one if you're nice. I found these at the famous Hakuhinkan Toy Park in the Ginza. "Peanut" Taking a break from the Enchantment photos to post a few pics of my new 4 week old guinea pig "Peanut", aka "MopTop". At one time, I had 7 female guinea pigs...I only had two left, one being 7+ year old "Ella" who passed away 2 weeks ago of what I believe was old age....That left Callie all alone & in her 5 years, she has never been alone...so first i tried to find a guinea pig to adopt & no success...so off to Creature Comforts where i buy my dogs' food & I fell in love with this little one:). Syd's Baby Blue Eyes This is my baby girl, Sydney. This picture is LONG overdue. It was taken April 19, 2006, when Syd was exactly 1 month and 2 days old. I was sick of editing pictures from the zoo and was looking through some of the old stuff on my computer. I came across this one, taken with a point-and-shoot camera. It was in horrific shape, but with my newly honed editing skills, I was able to make it look pretty good. Of course, it still doesn't due her justice; she was the cutest puppy ever. Expect many more of these in the future. This green is inspired by Buddy's outfit and I think it would be smashing with some yellow tights! Remember : "The best way to bring Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear"...but if you don't sing, consider knitting in a eco-friendly yarn. Our cotton is grown naturally in the old tradition without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Spun in a small mill in India, the slight variations in spinning and plying add textural interest. This 2-ply yarn, tightly plied for strength, making it good for socks, baby items, crochet, and weaving. 100% cotton Approx. 325 yards per skein, 100 grams 23 wpi. Recommended Neddles: US 3-5 PS. If you haven't seen Elf, I highly recommend it--rent it! Christmas Cherubim The Tate Britain Christmas tree this year has been decorated by artist Sarah Lucas, in a work titled Cherubim/Allegory of Love. Ever since we moved back to my family's farm in Indiana last summer, I've been wanting to have the sign repainted. For the past decade or so, the lettering had just barely been visible. Unable to find anyone willing to repaint the sign because of the poor shape it was in, my husband, George, and I decided to tackle the job ourselves. And now my grandfather's name --- A. Earl Van Bibber --- is readable again….just as it should be, just as it was for so many years. At my mom's funeral 2 years ago, a dear family friend quietly told me that my mother's death marked the end of an era. She meant that with her passing, the end had also come to another small Midwestern family farm….one that proudly bore my grandfather's name on the barn. My brother, sister and I enjoyed growing up on the farm, but none of us were able to take over operating it. My grandparents purchased the farm in 1919. My brother and sister have memories of them, but I was only a baby when they both passed away. It's only in my imagination that my grandparents exist. Yet oddly, I have always felt they had significant place in my heart. My mother rarely talked about her parents. I think it was because she missed them so much. I knew she loved her mother by her soft, gentle smile whenever I'd ask some silly question about my grandmother. And whenever a neighbor or old friend would mention my grandfather's name, Mother's eyes danced, and her voice became enthusiastic. From stories I've heard, my grandfather was generally well liked because of his sense of humor and gift of gab. But at the same time, he was a bit opinionated and outspoken. Perhaps that's a trait I inherited from my grandfather. Over the years, I've learned the hard way that I must bite my tongue, or at least express my opinions in a more tactful manner. When Mother passed away, we had to decide what to do with the farm. It's a decision with which countless other families have had to struggle. There are sleepless nights, worrying and praying about whether or not to sell it. Our farm had been in the family for over 80 years, and selling it seemed almost disloyal --- and so final. Once it was sold, that part of our family heritage would be gone. Nevertheless, we decided to sell the land, and somehow we got through the auction on that cold January day in 2001. We were greatly relieved when a neighboring farmer bought it, rather than a stranger from far away. As for the farmhouse and outbuildings, my brother and sister didn't really want to own them, but they didn't want to sell the farmstead to anyone outside the family either. At the time we were living in Tennessee, where George taught at a college. While I had lived the farmhouse since I was a little girl, I didn't know if my husband could find a teaching position in the area. However, with my brother's and sister's blessings, George and I decided to keep the farmstead and rent out the house. We figured we could always sell it later if necessary. Prayers Were Answered After the farm sale, I made the 7-hour drive back to Tennessee with mixed feelings --- a person does a lot of thinking all alone in a car after such an event. I kept telling myself that it was ridiculous to be so emotionally attached to a few acres of Indiana dirt, and that my mother and grandparents would have understood. Still, there was a deep sense of regret and loss….like a way of life had died. Yes, this was indeed the end of an era. I also wondered during that long drive back to Tennessee what on earth had I done by keeping an old house we'd probably never get to live in. I realized that George must really love me for allowing me to do so. During my absence, George had also been doing a lot of thinking about our future, and when I arrived home, he suggested we seriously consider moving to the farm. Beautiful Lacy Lavender and White Baby Bonnet-Perfect For a Shower Gift We, at Shabee Stitches, have been making bridal accessories for ages and when a good friend of ours announced that he and his wife were having a baby we just had to make up something! When we found out it was going to be baby girl we jumped on the idea of a frilly baby bonnet in pink. But-what to do to make it not the usual? With a little experimentation we came up with what we think is the perfect style... This bonnet is made from cotton fabric and we love to use some of our lace and trims we have collected for ages in making these bonnets special. Lined in white cotton gauze fabric, the bonnet features an adjustible back, white gathered laces that have been salvaged from vintage wedding gowns (circa 1960's-1970's) and vintage European lavender ribbon for trim. We also used new mini-gimp and white satin ribbon for ties. This bonnet will fit a baby with about a 17-18 inch head. Gift boxes and gift wrapping are available for an additional cost.
