day nine this is sooc. i haven't done a sooc picture in quite a while. today was pretty good. no school, so i got to sleep in a little. i also caught up on everyone's streams this morning. then, i went shopping downtown. i got a pretty little dress for church on easter sunday, and well as this cool little crochet vest. then we went to the costume shop, and it was having a huge sale because it's closing so i bought two really cool hats. they'll be on my stream soon. anyway, so them we went to subway for lunch, and then i had track practice. it was just pre-meet, because i have a big invitational all day tomorrow. and after that, i went to my boyfriends baseballs game, and then holy thursday mass, which is one of my favorite masses out of the entire year. it was really nice to be off of school, even if i ended up being busy. also, my new camera is supposed to get here tomorrow. it's and old twin lens reflex camera. i bought it off of ebay a few days ago. i can't wait. i'm not sure if it works, or if they still make the film, but it was cheap, and i think i'm going to start a camera collection. please press L. everything always looks better on black. Remains... Long day today. This is all that's left: a tired plate of dried spaghetti sauce and a messy kitchen. iPhone apps used: Camera+ (control over exposure point and focal point, took two photos, one dark, one light), TrueHDR (merged the dark and light photo), Perfect Photo (color balance, denoising, levels), Tiffen Photo fx (vignette), TiltShiftGen (further depth of field/miniaturizing focus, more vignetting), and back to Camera+ for a little grunge effect, then uploading to Flickr. Now what? A few weeks ago, I was at the site of the old Oak Bay Beach Hotel, and noticed an alarming number of bricks in a pit. I knew that, when they took the old hotel down, they rescued thousands of bricks for re-use. So I figured the ones in the pit must be broken - which suits my purposes just fine. Every day after that I walked by the site and looked at the information number on the sign that shows how the new development will look. And every day I considered calling it but... for whatever reason... chickened out. Somehow, the thought of calling up the owners of a multi-zillion dollar thingie scared me. But... dammit. I could not bear the thought of those bricks being simply buried. So the other day I screwed up my courage and called and asked about the bricks. And whaddaya know... on Saturday, the owner not only called to say "Sure, help yourself," but met me at the site and helped me haul bricks up from the pit and load up my truck. What a dude! He also said I could come back any time for another load... and I will. These bricks are true bits of local history. Most are Baker brand, which seem to be the foundation of most of the older buildings around these parts. Quite a few are from the Victoria Brick Company, which, until Saturday, I'd never even heard of. A few others - huge, yellowish, heavy ones with no indentations, bear the mark of something that includes the word Scotland. And then there are a couple whose remaining letters seem to say Skagit. It's all quite exciting. I loaded up my truck until the tires started flattening and spent a good chunk of yesterday unloading and hauling the bricks to the back yard. Then I stood staring, apparently for a longish time. "Taking a break?" asked Mike, who was working on my shed. "No," I said. "On the contrary. I'm doing the hardest work right now." The staring. The planning. The wandering and pondering. The thinking through of all the countless potential ways I could use my new playthings. That is, without a doubt, the hardest work of all. Once that's out of the way, placing the bricks is nothing. And you know what? It's the same for writing, the same for photography. No, of course, I don't/can't/wouldn't want to work out EVERYTHING ahead of time. That's too rigid. Of course things change and evolve and take their own shape as a project moves forward. Which is good. But... to start in any meaningful way... the shape of the idea has to be there first. So here I am today, with a big pile of bricks. Raw material. Limitless potential. And there it will sit until I decide on a pattern... a shape... a rhythm... a system of organization for the bits and pieces. Not unlike the raw materials crashing around inside my head. They will take shape. Eventually. They just need some time. I’m there, and meet a slight guy. He works for BP but he is, as well, a real prospector in his own right. Our mission is to drive to Hazelton and then South to a wintery, fishing camp on Ootsa Lake. The camp is adorned with six or seven rustic cabins. It is a short job. Doing some staking for B.P. Winter is about. I think a 3-dayer. Snow! Put on your cursed snow shoes. One of the things is, that BP knows that snow is out there and that the grader will soon do it‘s last plough. Hence access. The first day out, me tailing the relentless chain. I get thirsty. I stumble upon a creek. I can hear clearly, under its frozen shield, water trickling. Taking my well sharpened axe to chop open the water source, I drew it across my left thigh. Blood spouted. I could have done it all...but my partner said. “I’m driving you to Hazelton.” He did indeed. It was a long drive. At this time, in the dark, a lonely road but lit up a wee bit by the snow. The doctor in Hazelton knew a lot about blood-axe wounds. All a stitch, my partner said: “You stay home today.”My stay at the cabin, while he did the work, was wonderful. To be alone is neat-scary and I missed the company. But the silence of the wild is awesome. The winds whispers through the trees but you are not quite attuned to their stories. We did finish the staking job. We cleaned up the cabin, which would have to, in the future, deal with more snowfalls until spring, came around again. Doing the clean up he asked me if I could help him do something. Ears are perking up here. So he tells me this story. He is a serious prospector. He lives in Van. He fathered many children. He got himself a pilot’s license. He bought a small float plane. On a trip over the Cascades into the area of Fort St. James, on a prospecting trip, he miscalculated the lake size and on landing, ran into the opposite shore of said lake called,” Lac, don’t Land On Me“. The plane suffered big damages. As he said, he was lucky he didn’t get hurt and the lake was right beside the PGE railroad. People from the rail road helped him transport the motor and wings to Vancouver. The remaining part, which lay on a flat car in Fort St. James, was the fuselage. We left the lodge at about six o’clock. It is dark. Road, silly and icy. It is winter. We made Fort St James at about ten o’clock in the night. I must say to my wonderment, there is a fuselage on a flatcar. You can see it clearly in the stations, late night, lime lights, all a glow. The fuselage, dusted with a light snow. My partner knows what he is doing. We lift the fuselage off the flat car and put it onto the pickup. The front is hanging over the front of the cab, the tail lying in the back of our pick up. It is not heavy, much to my surprise. We tied it down. It was a strange sight, a pick-up in flight. He drives hard and long into the night. I’m driving with a master. I may have snoozed off but I can’t remember a conversation that we had. Early in the snowy morn, he drops me off at my Mum’s place in Kamloops. He is certainly tired. I suggest a motel, he says no. He leaves in the pickup truck to Van, upon which, his fuselage resides. Summation: Amex gave one the opportunity to toil with Greek and Roman God’s. Part of the reason we enjoy our own photos of course is knowing the context in which we took it and other viewers cannot make this association so the image must stand on its own. This was taken when I was travelling in northern Norway on the Hurtigruten* which is unquestionably my favourite mode of travel in Norway. It is a photographer's dream to ply the fjords of Norway on these ships - the light and the sights change constantly in some of the most spectacular land/seascapes in the world. Declaring my Independence from the Super Single bed My room was once eaten up by what was called a "Super Single" size bed, whatever that means. Now that the room has been repainted in its new Haint Blue color, I wanted something different. In this case, when you have a 10X12 room, downsizing is good. So I went down to a twin, and found this late 1880s/early-1890s late-Eastlake style twin bedframe in South Carolina. I bought it July 4th. So it's kind of a Declaration of Independence for me. No more big bed eating up the small room. And the "new" bed is old too. Yay. Last Thursday, I fell of my drum major podium, and hit my head on the pavement, resulting in a trip to the hospital, CT scans, bruises, sprained wrist, and a major concussion. Yikes. I’m doing much better now. I remember things, which mostly came back during Friday at home. When I woke up I didn’t even know what day it was, and I was repeating myself a lot. Now, I get tired really easily and I have amnesia of Thursday night, which I will probably never remember… Time to Put Snow Tires On One of the great things about photography is that there is always something to do, especially with my pocket sized cameras.
