View larger. Slow-Flow Nipples are Ideal for Breastfed Babies of All Ages AVENT Slow-Flow Nipples are a dual-hole extra-soft silicone nipples intended for infants older than one month, yet they can be used by breastfed babies of all ages. Working with your baby's natural feeding rhythm, the nipples let your baby control the flow, more like breastfeeding, which can help reduce overeating and spit-up. Also, the nipples' natural shape promotes proper latch-on and makes it easier for your baby to switch between breast and bottle. Each bottle features a two-piece anti-colic system that consists of the AVENT nipple and adapter ring. As your baby feeds, the unique skirt on the nipple flexes to allow air into the bottle and prevents any vacuum build-up. Listen for the gentle whistling sound and watch the air bubbles burst on the surface of the milk. That's your guarantee that the air is being released into the bottle--not into your baby's tummy. Works with Full Line of AVENT Pumps, Bottles, and Cups Like all AVENT bottles, the Natural Feeding Bottles work interchangeably with the entire line of AVENT pumps, bottles, and cups. While the 9-ounce bottles feature double-hole Slow-Flow nipples, you may use different AVENT nipple, bottle, and cup styles to meet your baby's changing needs. If you prefer different AVENT nipples for these bottles, simply switch out the nipples for ones with a different flow. Each nipple style is imprinted with a number, making it easy to identify and customize your AVENT bottles. Easy to Clean and Use These hygienic bottles are easy to clean and assemble, as there are no small parts. The dome cap securely seals the AVENT nipple to ensure leak-proof feeding, mixing, and travel without the need for separate sealing discs. Shaped for stability and comfort, the bottles' waisted shape makes it easy to hold, while its wide-neck design makes filling a cinch. Clear markings on the bottles ensure accurate measurement and make it simple to determine how much your baby has eaten. All components of the Natural Feeding Bottles are BPA free. About Philips AVENT Since 1984 AVENT has been designing and manufacturing products that are inspired by nature and developed through extensive research and clinical trials. I learnt how to wrap it when I was young thgh my skill isn't as good as hers. Used to make a lot of different kinds of rice dumpling when we lived in a Kampong-like estate where folks cooked food using charcoal stoves in the common backyard. About 20 households shared a common backyard where we cooked using charcoal stoves. The children bathed there with water from the gigantic ceramic pitcher and neighbours kept all kinds of pets (chickens, dogs, cats etc) that roamed the whole backyard (That's where I got my phobia towards cats). Since moving from that place to a flat when I was 13, Mum still prepared a lot of traditional Chinese food thgh long gone were the Kampong spirit ('Kampong' means 'village' in the Malay language) and associated festive mood. She did it illegally though at first, using gigantic oil tin to cook the dumpling along the corridor. This year, she prepared just a a handful using the gas stove. I have to say that she is a fantastic cook since she had been cooking and selling lots of traditional Chinese food to sell at streets when she was young. Didn't have much education cos people were mostly too poor to spend too many years in school, especially for girls. As she grew older each year, she cooked less and less and the taste kind of changed. I guess as people grow older, their preferences and cooking change as well. I have to say I'm not that enthusiastic about the traditional food now compared to the time when I was young. Maybe I no longer got to help prepare it personally or we just had too much good food now to appreciate things as we used to. I used to salivate over a bottle of coke, sipped hungrily from a small cup of chocolate milk (about once a month) or gobbled a bowl of instant noodles with egg hungrily that Mum prepared for the four of us in a big pot. Even toasted bread with butter and Kaya jam was a rare treat that made me not want to go home cos I got to eat it at breakfast at my relative's house during the few days I was there. Really missed the good old days of my childhood. :P See the other pics for more rice dumplings and other Asian food at under Food Glorious Food set at my flickr. About 2-3 months ago, I started having thoughts of making felt rice dumplings but still haven't got an uninterrupted time to experiment with the patterns. It'll be probably quite hard to find an 'adopter' for it so if I make it, I will probably keep it or give it as a gift eventually. Initially, I had lots of craze ideas for my felt stuffs too but realised that while people may find unusual designs cute, it may be easier to find people who're willing to pay n 'adopt' it. I also had crazy ideas about making felt toilet row on hanger in a series of work involving a conversation of a mother with her son, the way they did for comic strips (just that my pics are represented by handmade felt crafts instead). Well, for the same reasons, I will KIV that plan. Already, it was hard to find 'adopters' for my felt donuts & coasters thgh many flickrers and frens complimented them. See how.^^ While I am really a terrible cook, I am quite a foodie, being 'pampered' in the area of food. Esp so since i spent my childhood in a kampong-like estate where there were lots of old folks who spent their free time cooking lots of traditional food to sell, such as Indian Rojak, fried onion kuey, all kinds of kuey kuey, mee hoon, Loh Mai Fun, Fried Kuey Tiao etc. I only got to taste the 'commericalised' version of many traditional food at hawker centre when we moved out of that place by the end of Primary 6. I have to say that most of those that I have tried at hawker centres 'can't fight' with those that i have tried when i was young. Old folks carried food in wooden containers and a portable charcoal stove balanced on a wooden pole on their shoulder. Since these old folks were doing it to kill time or earn extra pocket money in our neighbourhood then, the prices were really cheap. I remembered an old uncle coming around 8pm in the evening once a week selling barbecued pork puff (a bit like Old Chang Kee curry puffs, just that the filling is barbecued pork, like those in Char Siew buns). Just 50cents for a piping hot one n we could just walk out to him from your door. Even my classmate went around selling mee hoon in an old baby pram. There was even an old uncle who went around door to door giving haircut at $3. Just put a stool at your front door and he will cut it for you on the spot. Folks chilled out at the common front yard in the evening, chatting with one another under the stars. I used to have 'candlelight dinner' at the stone table outside my house whenever there was a blackout. Lot of fun for kids whenever there was a blackout. I got to bathe or read my textbook under the candle light too. Suddenly, the mood to bathe or read my book was there whenever the blackout came and the candles were used. BABY SAFETY FOR LESS : FOR LESS
Baby safety for less : Baby christening poems. Baby Safety For Less
A land fit for the mediocre The last slam-door rolling-stock on what I still think of as the Southern Region ran in September 2005. The massed slamming of carriage doors, the groan of accelerating traction motors and the particular clatter and rumble of these trains were characteristic sounds of the South London suburbs. With their disappearance the capital has become, by a small degree, a little more anonymous, a little less itself. I still break out in a muck sweat to recall the occasion ...it must have been early in the summer of 1967... when I accompanied a steam-crazed pal to Nine Elms shed, then in its final months of activity. We didn't really know where the shed was and thought we might be able to see it from the line. Accordingly we caught a train from Waterloo down to Clapham Junction. We were in one of those full-width compartments, which gave unlimited scope for misbehaviour between stations. Somewhere south of Vauxhall ...showing off, of course, as one does at that age... I thought it might amuse my friend if I opened the door a chink as the train was going along. You will remember that the doors had handles on the outside which you rotated through a half-turn; but on the inside there was a sliding latch, with a stiff spring, which you couldn't hold onto. As soon as I had opened the door a chink, to my distress, the wind rushed in and blew it wide open. I had not anticipated this development, but managed to recruit my wits in time to stop the door from describing its complete 180° arc and coming to rest flat against the side of the carriage. I now had to drag the heavy door back against the wind resistance. The trouble was that I was gripping the window-frame close to the hinged side of the door, greatly increasing the requisite effort. My friend had now rendered assistance by holding onto my free arm ...from well within the compartment. I noted, with some asperity, his disinclination to involve himself in my predicament to the extent of approaching the gaping doorway. In this attitude I could not reposition my hand on the window frame without letting go. Ten feet perpendicularly beneath my nose the track bed and live rails whirled past at 50mph. Anyway, I lived to tell the tale. I suppose most of us can recall half a dozen misadventures, mostly dating from youth, when, had things gone just a little differently, we might easily have been killed. It already seems odd that once, quite recently, people were trusted to open and close train doors for themselves. Solicitude for our "health and safety" would be touching were it motivated by tenderness for humanity rather than the wish to avoid bad publicity and legal liability. Responsible grown-up people shouldn't need the State, in the guise of baby-sitter, to protect them from their own folly. Fools must take their chances and learn from their mistakes. It's a hard thing to say, but occasional tragedies are the price society pays for the autonomy of the individual citizen. My memories of the Southern Region emus go back to the days when they were painted a decorous all-over green. I'm afraid I could never quite get to grips with all that business of 4-SUBs, 2-EPBs, motor brake seconds and driver trailing composites, but I regarded the SR suburban system as one of the capital's wonders. These units, 4-CIGs I think, were among the last of the "traditional" units and the least appealing. Their appearance was uninspired and I always thought those dirt-trap recesses for the cables were unsightly. The photograph was taken at Horley, where I spent an enjoyable hour watching the trains go by as I sat and smoked a cigar. This was in 2003. By 2010 this innocent recreation would be prohibited. In Mothers Arms A homeless mother holds her child snug and warm, collecting coins from strangers on busy Bangkok streets. Or is it? I pass these scenes daily and think about corruption at even these basic levels of society. Being a developing economy, Thailand has very few social programs that we find in the West. In a country where so many have so little, children are often exploited by organized gangs to beg for money or sell flowers on the streets. Women are recruited to do the same, and given a baby for the day if they don't already have one. Babies are sometimes rented, stolen or forcibly borrowed from real mothers, and then commonly traded between women beggars who work for these gangs. Most often they are forced to turn over all earnings, in the end being paid less than a dollar a day. Often I wonder, will the baby eat if I don't put money in the cup? Will the baby eat even if I do? And even more often I wonder if the woman holding the child is really a mother at all. It is common to see five and six year old children roaming free selling flowers at 2am to tourists in the bar areas. If you watch closely you'll eventually see an adult hiding out of sight somewhere, usually a woman, watching and waiting for the child to deliver the earnings. There is no way to know if there is any relationship between the two, other than a business arrangement. When I see pre-teens selling flowers in these areas, it saddens me because I know that in only a few short years many will simply toss the flowers (and their minders) and move up to working in the same bars they're selling flowers outside of now . Such is life. I rarely tip the cup. Sometimes I offer to buy a child something to eat, but only if they eat it when I buy it. Once a child ran off even with the food I bought him, delivering it to his minder. Everything's a racket. Everyone's a cheat. That's the world some of these children grow up in. Please take a look through the rest of my photographs and comment freely. Taking Charge of Anger: How to Resolve Conflict, Sustain Relationships, and Express Yourself without Losing Control If anger is starting to rule your life, or someone else has urged you to "get a grip--or else," anger expert Dr. Robert Nay has a six-step plan that can help you regain control, even in the most stressful, hot-button situations. This proven program shows you how to stand up for yourself without losing your temper. Put a lid on destructive anger once and for all with fine-tuned strategies that help you: *Figure out which of the five "faces of anger" are a problem for you, from passive-aggression to all-out rage. *Recognize the early warning signs of anger in your physical sensations and thoughts. *Identify and change unrealistic expectations you have for yourself and other people. *Communicate effectively when differences arise--with your spouse, family members, colleagues, or others. *Practice anger-management skills alone and in public until they're second nature. For anyone who needs help with anger, Dr. Nay's program is effective, easy to learn, and--unlike other methods--brings about lasting change. (20100412) (7) 268/365 Day 268... I'm Going to Be a Big Sister! These colorful tales are designed to help prepare older siblings for the arrival of a new baby brother or sister. By providing discussion prompts, these books help give parents the language needed to speak to their older children in a way that is supportive, complimentary, and caring. Through a variety of descriptions—from which toys are safe for babies and which are dangerous, to the importance of hand washing and picking up the baby only when a grown up is there to help—Sam and Amanda learn what it means to be a big brother or sister. A discussion about the real-life issue of parents' temporary absence while at the hospital prepares youngsters for what might otherwise be a confusing and frightening time. The books' handy tip sheets succinctly detail hints for supporting the older child, and the accompanying musical CD contains upbeat and catchy tunes that emphasize the special bond between brothers and sisters. (11) iyabiza lentombi Lobolo or Lobola (Mahadi in Sesotho; Roora in Shona) is sometimes translated as bride price) is a traditional Southern African custom whereby the man pays the family of his fiancee for her hand in marriage (Compare with the European dowry custom where the woman brings assets[citation needed]). The custom is aimed at bringing the two families together, fostering mutual respect, and indicating that the man is capable of supporting his wife financially and emotionally. Traditionally the lobola payment was in cattle as cattle were the primary source of wealth in African society. However, most modern urban couples have switched to using cash. The process of lobola negotiations can be long and complex, and involves many members from both the bride's and the groom's extended families. Often, to dispel any tensions between the families, a bottle of brandy is placed on the table. This is usually not drunk; it is simply a gesture to welcome the guest family and make everyone feel more relaxed (it is known as mvulamlomo, which is Xhosa for 'mouth opener' i.e. price for opening your mouth {to speak})to express the purpose of your visit. Lobola may have some unintended negative effects. It may have created a financial barrier for some young men looking to take a bride. It is common for a couple that are emotionally ready to commit to each other to stay unmarried if they do not have the financial resources to satisfy the impeding traditional ritual. For those who do have the financial means, the issue can be Lobola's opportunity cost. Young men who are in the wealth-creation stage of life may feel that their future is better secured if they invest their money elsewhere to receive significant financial returns. Lobola is seen by some as an extravagance that has little relevance in a society where young Africans are trying to lift themselves out of inherited poverty. However, the tradition is adhered to as strongly as ever, and in families where tradition and intention override greed, lobola can be a great way of showing commitment between families, not just between the bride and groom. Many traditional marriages utilise a cash-based lobola; this can be then followed by a European-style wedding ceremony, where the lobola funds are used to pay for expenses. In this way, any outlaid costs are returned to the payer in another form, preserving tradition, honour and finances. In the Shona cultures in Zimbabwe, roora takes place in a number of stages whereby the final stage includes a party financed by the newly aquired groom. Amongst the various stages of the roora ceremony, the groom to be has to provide outfits for the mother of the bride. These are called "Nhumbi dzaamai" and will traditionally include a blanket alongside a standard outfit, while the outfits for the father are called "Nhumbi dzababa" and will often be a suit of choice to later wear for the European wedding ceremony (if the couple has one). At each stage of the ceremony, there are traditions to observe and small amounts to pay. It must be noted that roora is not paid up at once but is a culmination of many small (or large amounts, teh amount paid is determined at the negotiations and dependant on various factors). For example, the price and ceremony for meeting the in-laws is called "Mbonano" and is entry to the house. This is followed by "Guzvi", a second price for greeting the in-laws and accompanied by the traditional greeting (special clapping depending on culture, noting that the Shona people are 12 different etnic groups). Subsequent gifts of cash or food are then placed into a special plate that is used for the occasion. This is either bought or borrowed and has a price and ceremonial reference as well: "Kubvisa ndiro" (the price of buying or borrowing the plate). Even after the main ceremony, roora still needs to be paid in small amounts after the birth of a child or after 20 years, this is to contunially thank and acknowledge the wife's family. Of course, this only happens in certain shona groups. Other gifts or prices include "Vhuramuromo" (meaning opening of mouth) for the greeting of the guests, similar to the Xhosa Loloba mvulamlomo, outlined above. "Dare" for calling of the witnesses to the marriage and "Matsvakirai kuno" for the explanation of "How did you meet my daughter" or "Who told you that I have a daughter?" Gifts for the mother of the bride then include "Mbereko", for carrying the bride in a pouch or sling when she was a baby, and "Mafukidzadumbu" for "covering of the belly"; this is alternately translated as "carrying the baby in the womb" or "tucking the baby in with a blanket (when she wakes in the night)". A special gift for the father of the bride is the "Matekweyandevu" to acknolegde him for "the pulling of the beard" as she sat on his knee, or putting up with the It felt natural to have a house full of children and these little guys really needed a forever family. Debbie: We fostered 17 children when we lived in Texas and decided to continue—and even consider adoption—when we moved to Battle Creek. I’m from here and my parents fostered kids, too. Some say we have the gift of hospitality. Pat: Still, we were at the point where our biological kids were teenagers, so we were close to complete freedom. It was a major consideration to start over with toddlers. Debbie: Then these three kids came along and grabbed our hearts, and that was it. We took in the two older half brothers the same day we were licensed. They had been removed from their home due to neglect and placed in foster care. When their brother was born, the boys’ birth mother wanted me present. She made an adoption plan for her boys in hopes that Pat and I would get them; she just wasn’t able to care for them. Pat: We brought the baby home and tried to help him through his serious medical problems but Debbie developed medical issues of her own which ended the baby foster care. Because sibling groups are kept together, all three boys had to leave us. Debbie: We missed them terribly. It felt natural to have a house full of children and these little guys really needed a forever family, so when their situation changed and they became available to begin the adoption process, we jumped at the chance! Eleven months later, the boys came back to us and nine months after that, the adoption was final. The boys love to be hugged and told, “I’m your forever Mommy now!” After all the moves they had to make at young ages, they can’t hear that reassurance enough. Family & Children Services (a program delivery partner of United Way) is wonderful and got us through all the legal and medical obstacles. Our adoption workers and the boys’ foster care worker give us great support and answer all our questions. I just can’t say enough about them. They’re there when you need them: full service. We still foster children, too. Pat: We couldn’t do all this without our faith and our church, Victory Life. It’s spectacular with support. Our biological kids, Rick and Laura, have been a great help to us, and my employer, Duncan Aviation, is really good. My boss is very understanding and lets me off when needed, saying, “Go, these kids need to have a good home.” The boys are making medical, developmental, educational and emotional strides. United Way has made a valuable investment in the future of these three children by providing dollars to foster care and adoption services in Battle Creek. Debbie: We’ve become wise shoppers. We go to Sam’s Club at lunch time on Saturdays and the kids eat some of this and some of that. The greeters call us ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ and say, “Hey, here’s that family again! You’re down a few today?” “Yep,” I reply, “we’re down to three today, but just wait!” — Debbie & Pat Reeves © 2006 NEW MEDIA BREW, Inc. Unfortunately, the evidence shows that many therapists do not. Paula M. Kramer, M.A. spent five years in therapy with two different therapists to treat her suicidal depression. Paula's first therapist left her so completely unprepared for understanding the clues of her life that Paula nearly killed three children when she had a blackout while driving. Paula's second therapist gave her the freedom she needed to recognize that a memory from her childhood meant that her mother had tried to kill her. Paula's journal shows how therapists can completely misunderstand therapy in spite of the best intentions to help. Paula includes dozens of therapist errors revealed by several research studies. She also includes recommendations to both clients and therapists for making therapy effective. Furthermore, Paula's journal gives a new understanding of repressed memories. Instead of repressing her memory of being murdered, Paula's mind broke the memory into separate physical, mental, and emotional pieces. Paula actually lived with the physical pain of being murdered for almost forty years. Those separate physical, mental, and emotional pieces became the clues Paula followed to find her Self. The clues are highlighted in Paula's journal so you can see when and how they appear in her life. When therapists do not understand therapy, they also do not understand how therapy affects a client's life. Nor do they understand how therapy affects the lives of those close to the client. Paula's journal is a remarkable look inside depression, long term therapy, and the consequences of therapy based on assumption rather than fact Related topics: twins babies names boy baby shower party supplies baby boy nursery bedding sets baby can read 5 dvd butterflies baby shower theme baby sitting mania 2 stars and moons baby bedding video of woman giving birth to a baby black baby showers |

(11) Remembrance and Memorials An All Too Brief Remembrance One hundred years ago, August of 1908, Gretta K. Sprague was born and lived her entire life in a brief 48 hours. She was a "blue baby", a common name for several possible cardiac birth defects. Surgery to correct some of these defects would be developed 36 years later and now, 100 years later, fetal cardiac surgery can done before birth if necessary. I remember my grandmother bringing me here as a child and helping her place flowers on the grave while she told me Gretta's story. At that time there was a lamb statue atop this small, plain base. I don't know when it disappeared but we were able to find this obscure marker using the cemetery records and map. My father (pictured here) even found the receipt from Oak Grove Cemetery for $10 for the purchase of the grave, a sum that he says represented a week's wage for 50 hours of my grandfather working as a soap cutter for Proctor & Gamble. I was too young to understand what the loss of her first born meant to my grandmother. The death of a child is something a parent always grieves even when the child is so young. My grandmother went on as women have been doing throughout the ages. My Aunt Elda was born in 1912, my Uncle Tommy in 1920 and my father in 1924 but she never forgot her first, Gretta. She tended the grave, pulling weeds, bringing flowers and sharing her story with me. It's my turn now to share Gretta's story. Words and images can create a remembrance as effectively as a stone edifice. They take what is remembered, create a record and share it so the remembrance continues. My words and images are the only memorials I can build. It's all I have to offer to Aunt Gretta. Cherished Memories 8/365 This is a shadowbox. It contains items that my family will forever cherish because not including some pictures, its all we have from our 1st born. His name is Chandler. He would have been 6 yrs old in May of this year. He died shortly after birth due to a congenital heart defect. I don't feel that this is one of my better photographs, but it has ALOT of sentimental value. The white blanket on the left was the blanket he was wrapped in after he was born. He was baptized with the bottle of Holy Water by the hospital chaplain. The bible was given to me by a cousin of mine "In Memory of Chandler" . The blue striped outfit was the one we asked the hospital to dress him in after the doctors told us they was nothing more they could do for him without him having to suffer and the angel pin was given to me by my mom while I was in labor. (15) The Caucasian Chalk Circle Written in 1944 while Brecht was living in America, The Caucasian Chalk Circle was initially intended for Broadway. It never quite made it there, but was instead premiered by students at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1948. Brecht's source for the play is most likely Klabund's Circle of Chalk, which was based on an ancient Chinese play written in 1300 A.D. with the same name. Brecht adapted this story into parable form and changed the setting to Soviet Georgia near the end of World War II. Brecht wrote the play for the Viennese actress Luise Rainer, who already had experience playing a figure like Grusha in Klabund's play. Unfortunately, she and Brecht quarreled and parted company forever before the play was produced. The play was initially translated by Eric Bentley. The first edition of The Caucasian Chalk Circle was mostly true to the German text with the only serious omission being that of the Prologue. The reason for this omission is related to the fact that Brecht was forced to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee in Washington in October, 1947. Since the play was about to be published at this time, the publication of the Prologue was postponed at his request. This caused two false rumors to start: one, that the prologue was written after the original text, and two, that Bentley himself had initiated the omission. Neither of these rumors was true. The play itself is unusual for Brecht because it has a relatively happy ending; everything works out for Grusha. At the same time, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is clearly a Communist play: whoever can make the best use of resources in order to provide for others deserves to get those resources. Implicit in this Communist moral is also a secularized version of the Biblical Christ story. With typical anti-religious fervor, Brecht parallels Christ's story through the life of the drunken judge Azdak. Furthermore, The Chalk Circle is itself a version of Solomonic Law, based on the Biblical story of Solomon and the baby. When two women came to Solomon, both of them claiming the same child, he ordered the child cut in half. The true mother chose to instead give the entire baby to the other woman, thereby revealing to Solomon that she was in fact the mother. The play did not gain popularity in the United States until the 1950s. The first professional production took place at Hedgerow Theater in Philadelphia in 1948 and was directed by Eric Bentley. Soon thereafter The Caucasian Chalk Circle became Brecht's most popular parable in the United States. ?????? ???????? ???????? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ? G. K. Beale, coeditor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike. And much, much more! (13) Salads Made w/ SGC Herbs and Flowers @ Castagna A few weeks ago we brought some lovely samples of herbs and flowers to the chef @ Castagna (SE 17th and Hawthrone). Recently, he sent me this pic of the salady units that he made w/ some of them. Aren't they pretty? I do love to see what real cooks can do w/ our babies, as I am not nearly so artistic, being quite a pragmatist at heart (as I think all farmers are). -->rant begins As an interesting aside, while reading up through my OSU notes on some vegetables and their outcrossing potential w/ regards to seed saving, I was reminded that many veggies do have toxic components that are transformed into something less harmful during the cooking process. Moreover, in many (if not most) cases, these toxins (that may include neurolathyrogens, nitrites, calcium / potassium oxalate, thioglucosides, goitergens, hemagglutinins, solanoids such as solanine and tomatine, toxic levels of lipid soluble vitamins and pryimidine) are inactivated by the cooking process. Others need to be leached out for days. That said, often the highest levels of these compounds, most especially the alkaloids, are contained in the young leaves and flowers of the plant. This raises the highly ironic possibility that the rich are slowly being poisoned by their own excess. As a general rule, I don't harvest my veggies when they're in the embyronic stages (that some chefs seem to prefer them at ) for the simple reason that young plants use chemical warfare to discourage predation before the seed is viable. That's just ecology. I'm not interested in poisoning people, no matter how much they ask for it, and no matter if they're loathsome capitalist scum. I just can't do it. There are pros and cons of tiny vs. "normal" sized veggies (which is defined as the biggest you can get them before they get too chewy or seedy). Smaller ones have more minerals that are not readily translocated within plant tissues, such as calcium. On the other hand, flavinoid development / balance and pigment carried (both lipid and water solube) vitamins are generally greater in more mature fruits. Now, accidentally offending people is one of my super-powers, sadly. So, when I say that adherents to strictly raw diets are practicing a potentially dangerous form of eating disorder in my opinion, a lot of folks, some of them friends, are going to be offended. However, I do think everyone should eat something raw every day, and not just fruits. It's just that most people's veggie pallates are so limited, that there isn't room for many non-toxic-when-raw items among them. So, Portland: cook your damn food and just practice some moderation. I'll let you know what is safe to eat in it's embryonic form, such as my favourite edible Poacian - baby corn! These salads, pictured here, are varied with many different crops and when eaten in moderation, are a gorgeous and nutritious addition to one's diet. rant ends<-- But seriously, you'll have to admit these are good looking salads in their giant bowels. Is this done to keep people from spilling on themselves? I, for one, have never eaten a salad I didn't also end up wearing and have to wonder if the giant dishes would help. I aint kissing this Frog! As seen on MSN. Photographer unknown Scientists unearth prehistoric 'frog from hell' It dined on baby dinosaurs, was wider than a rugby ball and had a predilection for cannibalism: meet Beelzebufo, or the ‘frog from hell’ – the world’s most aesthetically challenged ancient amphibian. Fossils of the 70 million-year-old giant carnivore have been unearthed by scientists in Madagascar, giving weight to the theory the island off Africa’s east coast was once part of a super-continent linking India and South America. Wide-mouthed frog A close relative of today’s Horned toads, the devil frog weighed a comparatively whopping 4kg and measured up to 40cm in length. Anything but svelte, it had a squat, bulbous body with a huge head and wide, gaping mouth. Scientists at New York’s Stony Brook University and the University College London spent more than a decade painstakingly piecing together scores of fossil fragments to recreate the beastly looking aquatic behemoth. Lazy predator Professor Susan Evans, of the University College London, told MSN UK News: “For the past 15 years, boxes of bits have been passed back and forth across the Atlantic while we tried to piece together the jigsaw puzzle. “We finally worked out it was related to today’s Horned frogs, but an awful lot bigger – and you wouldn’t want to pick it up. “Beelzebufo was an ambush predator: short, stubby legs meant it wasn’t terribly mobile, but it was very well camouflaged and would lie in wait for food to walk past. “Extremely aggressive, the devil frog would lunge at anything that came within reach – even if was substantially bigger than the frog itself.” Cannibal instinct Beelzebufo’s diet would most likely have consisted of insects and small vertebrates such as lizards, but scientists claim it is not impossible the frog might even have munched on hatchling or juvenile dinosaurs. The discovery also has implications for the debate about how the earth’s land masses used to be arranged, lending new weight to the controversial paleobiogeographical model suggesting Madagascar, the Indian subcontinent and South America were linked well into the Late Cretaceous – substantially more recently than previously believed. WHEN CAN A BABY FLY : WHEN CAN A
When Can A Baby Fly : New Baby Grand Pianos : Baby Formula Recommendations. When Can A Baby Fly
Little Bear (An I Can Read Book) Meet Little Bear, a friend to millions of children. And meet Mother Bear, who is there whenever Little Bear needs her. When it is cold and snowy outside, she finds just the right outfit for Little Bear to play in. When he goes to the moon, she has a hot lunch waiting for him on his return. At night she helps him get to sleep. And, of course, she never forgets his birthday. This is the first I Can Read Book ever, and the first of five classic Little Bear books, expressly designed for beginning readers. Elsa Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak teamed up to create these simple stories that are deeply comforting and lovingly playful. In one story, "Birthday Soup," Little Bear cannot find his mother and presumes she has forgotten his birthday. With the prospect of guests arriving and no cake in sight, he sets out to make birthday soup (all his friends like soup). Just as the gathering is sitting down for soup, Mother Bear shows up with a big, beautiful birthday cake. "I never did forget your birthday, and I never will," she says to her son as he hugs her leg. In "Little Bear Goes to the Moon," Little Bear declares that he will fly to the moon in his new space helmet. Mother Bear tells him to be back by lunch, and he is. The gentle, teasing repartee between Little Bear and his mother will delight young readers, and the spacious layout and large type will encourage them to keep on reading! (Ages 4 to 8) (7) 123 of 365: Secret #12 I can't fly... today was fairly awesome...i received a wonderful little panda care package from anthony (i swear he's too good to me) with little treats in it for me and the dogs including a new battery charger for my camera because mine is dying...there was also toaster waffles of course :D and other wonderful things...my mum's birthday DVD's came and i gave them to her right away and we sat down and watched Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill...cake or death?...i swear i'm all retarded over that man... as for now though i'm in a lot of pain and my secret will explain why... Secret #12: when i was eight, i decided i could fly...i was wrong...it was valentine's day and i jumped off of the monkey bars at school, promising the other kids i would fly my way to safety...instead i fell, smacked my head on the lower steps of the bars, and i landed with both of my arms pinned behind me in a very awkward position... one ER trip later they found out (though the doctor insisted was impossible) that i had not just broken both of my wrists, but the break was so bad that i had actually broken both of my arms...awesome :D i spent the next year getting out of gym and avoiding using my hands as much as possible... nowadays i suffer from carpal tonal syndrome and since its paired with already badly weakened wrists, you can imagine the fun the aches are...like today i'm just fine except for my hands...i can't do much with them and my right wrist is badly swollen and looks deformed to me...it's days like that i'm reminded that most 10 year olds have more strength in their hands than i do and it makes me feel like a weakling...i couldn't even put my hair looking nice so my dad spent most of his time home asking me if i'd been electrocuted or attacked...ass... i feel like my hands are on fire right now which is one of the reasons why i haven't commented much to anyone or written anyone back though i really want to...i will get to it all soon though :D i just can't wait to just relax tonight and let them rest while i enjoy some panda time with my guy... Baby Waxwings Waxwings have to be some of the worst bird parents ever. They kick the fledglings out many days before they can fly and get them into thick brush or hedges. The main problem lies in that the hedges she ushers them to are quite a ways to hop for these little guys. It was almost dark and they were on the ground with a cat nearby so I placed them on a branch up higher for the night. They proceeded on their journey the next day. First thing in the morning there was a cat near the trees and I chased it away. I chased several away throughout the day and finally saw the one chick make it to the hedge. Once I saw where it went I got the other one which was still a long way off. I put it next to the hedge and it plowed right on in. They make a lot of noise and while the mom tries to decoy if a cat gets close, she failed to see one when she went in and led the cat right to her babies and before I could do anything the cat got one. Also, I observed they take this stance whenever they sense danger. My assumption is it makes them look more a part of the branch. When no danger was present they sit normal and cuddle and fluff and stretch, etc. Related topics: unique baby outfits two room baby monitors gender of the baby during pregnancy sewing pattern baby booties knitting a baby hat meaning names baby sippy cup for baby happy baby 123 |
WELCOME BABY GIRL - WELCOME BABY
Welcome Baby Girl - Baby Dont Make Me - Congratulations For New Born Baby. Welcome Baby Girl
Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! is the funny, serious, and compelling new novel by Fannie Flagg, author of the beloved Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (and prize-winning co-writer of the classic movie). Once again, Flagg's humor and respect and affection for her characters shine forth. Many inhabit small-town or suburban America. But this time, her heroine is urban: a brainy, beautiful, and ambitious rising star of 1970s television. Dena Nordstrom, pride of the network, is a woman whose future is full of promise, her present rich with complications, and her past marked by mystery. Fans of Fannie Flagg's Southern-fried yarns will enjoy her folksy reading of her third novel--the story of New York TV anchorwoman Dena Nordstrom, who must take her fast-paced life down a few notches, face her mysterious past, and shake hands with her small-town heritage in order to find happiness. Listening to Flagg's storytelling on this abridged rendition, one might as well be sitting across a kitchen table from her as she pours two cups of coffee and serves up slices of apple pie along with the latest neighborhood gossip. Flagg, author of the bestselling book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, received a Grammy Award nomination for her narration on the audio version of that book. (Running time: five hours, four cassettes) --Kimberly Heinrichs (6) 39.365 welcome to the world baby girl June 8 2010 The title is a book by Fannie Flagg, it's one of my mum's favourites, but I've never read it. I couldn't even say what it's about. But I like the title. :) Went round my matey Jaimie's house today. It made me happy. She fell in her paddling pool and killed her phone. Apparently Samsung Toccos can't survive being submerged. It was hilarious. Edit, May 1 2011: actually, it did survive. Once it dried off it was fine, and another friend of mine dropped hers in her toilet and it survived so they're tough little buggers. Welcome baby Avery Leigh So precious! The Center Cannot Hold Elyn Saks is a success by any measure: she's an endowed professor at the prestigious University of Southern California Gould School of Law. She has managed to achieve this in spite of being diagnosed as schizophrenic and given a "grave" prognosis -- and suffering the effects of her illness throughout her life. Saks was only eight, and living an otherwise idyllic childhood in sunny 1960s Miami, when her first symptoms appeared in the form of obsessions and night terrors. But it was not until she reached Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar that her first full-blown episode, complete with voices in her head and terrifying suicidal fantasies, forced her into a psychiatric hospital. Saks would later attend Yale Law School where one night, during her first term, she had a breakdown that left her singing on the roof of the law school library at midnight. She was taken to the emergency room, force-fed antipsychotic medication, and tied hand-and-foot to the cold metal of a hospital bed. She spent the next five months in a psychiatric ward. So began Saks's long war with her own internal demons and the equally powerful forces of stigma. Today she is a chaired professor of law who researches and writes about the rights of the mentally ill. She is married to a wonderful man. In The Center Cannot Hold, Elyn Saks discusses frankly and movingly the paranoia, the inability to tell imaginary fears from real ones, and the voices in her head insisting she do terrible things, as well as the many obstacles she overcame to become the woman she is today. It is destined to become a classic in the genre. Elyn Saks is a success by any measure: she's an endowed professor at the prestigious University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Teresa's Coronation For those bored; the story being read to the blindfolded birthday girl Baby bongos Tamborine Xylophone 2 Maracas Guitar 2 Recorders… Spray bottle with salt water… Tamborine and the rest of the instruments to be used in any Middle Eastern scene that has music…we can adlib somewhat as well. Perhaps during narrative parts the guitar can be lightly stroked. This is a story with narration, and I will be the narrator. (Mickey) This is an evening of remembrance; a remembrance of events gone before, lives changed and order restored. Who is Teresa? What is Teresa? Where has she come from? Where is she going to? Why is she blindfolded? Well we say: ALL: Why not? Narrator: Yes indeed, why not? However you have come to a time in your life that you, yes you Teresa, must rediscover your past and take hold of your future. We are your facilitators in your discovery and insomuch have taken the liberty of putting drugs in the drink that you now hold in your hands. Drink of it and face all that you are and all that you can be. ALL: Chug, Chug, Chug, Chug….(chanting till she finishes the drink} ALL: Discussion ensues without paying any mind to Teresa…things like…How long do you think this will take? Isn’t this dangerous? Could she die? Has anyone here done this before? ….oh well. Narrator: Do you hear me Teresa? We are going to go back in time Teresa. Way back… (Hold clock or watch to her ear and eerie music with the Recorders) We are going back to the time of your birth, but first we must get there. Concentrate….Concentrate more…come on Teresa you can do better than that. Tell us when you are crossing the Atlantic ocean. (see what she says, but when she says she can see it we spray her with water with salt in it) Are you crossing the Atlantic Teresa? Lick your lips…what does it taste like? Okay great, I thought you were hovering over Lake Ontario there. You are doing good and have passed the first quest. Many have died with the spray of Lake Ontario. You are more powerful than we first imagined. Isn’t that right facilitators? ALL: (Quick agreement, like yeah, like way powerful) Narrator: Teresa where are you now? ALL: (Speak Polish) Narrator: Good Teresa, now concentrate more ALL: English accents… …Where are you now Narrator: Go south Teresa… ALL: (Speaking our crappy French…Bonjour, ect) Narrator: It is time to leave this country now Teresa. Concentrate, concentrate on the country of your birth. (She will say Poland...but we correct her) (Middle eastern music starts off soft ever increasing…suddenly the music stops and bongos are hit in rapid succession) What year is it Teresa? (Make her go back until she says 1955…soon as she says it we all say…) ALL: The chosen one is born! Chris: (Cry out like a baby is being born) ALL: (Middle Eastern Music, great rejoicing…old middle eastern women asking to touch the baby, hold the baby and feed the baby) Wanda: Stop you foolish women! (Music is lowered) You will get your camel lice all over the new born babe. We have lost so many chosen ones from your middle eastern cooties. Smarten up, and listen. The babe is in great peril. ALL: (lamenting…Oh have mercy on this child) Wanda: Shut uppa your bouches old hags. Our enemies are are planning to kidnap the child led by their leader Matt Ingo…a desperate sad and pathetic pig who wants to rob this child of her birthright. Chris as Matt Ingo: Did someone mention my name? ALL: (screaming…oh no Matt Ingo is here, music is loud…lots of commotion, music stops suddenly…total silence then …. Diane in Aussie accent says: “Mattdingo has stolen my baby” Narrator: Yes, Matt dingo having stolen the chosen one whisked the child to Toronto Canada where no one could find her. However when he was faced with the task of killing the child he could not bring himself to do the deed. CHRIS AS MATT INGO: I just can’t do it! Narrator: Instead he found a couple living on Springhurst who would raise the child as their own for the price of two camels and a 40 ouncer of Vodka. Narrator: Dang this will have to be continued...this Flickr doesn't hold much text does it..hmmm...thinking, thinking...continued... I got a five week old leopard kitten on my lap for Valentine's Day, what did you get, hmmm? :) It's been a long time since I posted something less "artsy" or "thoughtful" and this photo breaks up the postings most wonderfully! I had to share. Patrick and I spent the weekend at the most amazing beach we've found yet on the Oregon Coast - Bandon. I have no photos of the beach, just sand in my shoes. We didn't really go to shoot this weekend, we didn't get any spectacular sunsets, but the weather was perfect and the weekend was most excellent. We discovered that the dogs LOVE to run on the beach and don't even get upset when they get wet and sandy. When we got home during the rain the other night, the dogs were once again afraid of puddles and getting wet. Bandon is a place we've already vowed and planned on returning to when we can spend some serious time, despite the nearly 5 hour crappy, uninteresting drive to get there. I can warn you all though to skip the Chinese joint in nearby Coos Bay: KUM YON'S. Needless to say we picked it for its giggle-factor name. The woman who seated us who didn't speak much English was wearing a name tag that read "KUM" and I can't help but wonder who will be the first person to tell her... But, even better than the terrible restaurant and awful drive, we had a coupon for a buy-one get-one admission to a weird little "walk through safari" in Bandon. It was basically a bizarre petting zoo, very 1960s in flavor, with pacing animals and wood and fence enclosures. I couldn't help but think we shouldn't taunt their tigers as I looked at the chain link fence that separated us from them. Obviously we couldn't pet the lions, tigers, chimps, and the strange monkey with gigantic, sky-blue nuts, but we got to play with capybaras, wallabies, goats, llamas, ferrets; we pet a skunk (who was bitey so we had to be careful), we cuddled the sweetest possum (who very strongly resembles my gross old cat), but the highlight was playing with, feeding, and holding a five week old leopard kitty. His name was Diesel, and he was as big as my dog Gromit and his feet were gigantic already. He was feisty and playful and as he climbed my pants-leg, I couldn't help but think that my dear friend Tamara's Bengal cat Tigger was adventurous a cat as I'd like to own. (Checking out their 7 month old leopard, who was easily 100 pounds already, larger than most great danes, desperate to get out of its cage and eat the goats, and had feet the size of dinner plates, the five week old kitty was not going to be controllable much longer.) Regardless of my questions of the animals' well being (damn did the fox den stink), we enjoyed our bizarre little visit to the "safari" and I can now add cuddling a leopard baby to my bizarre "been there, done that" list!
