This is a pattern for an intermediate knitter (or the beginner who is ready to move up to the intermediate level). You need to know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, knit 2 together, decrease, yarn over, make buttonholes, pick up stitches and work on double pointed needles (for the booties only). Besides knitting, you will also need to do a little sewing (sewing the pieces of the sacque together and sewing on buttons) and blocking.
It's certainly more complicated than a scarf or a hat, but it's not nearly as difficult as you might think from the picture.
