Ill just come out and say troy movie everyone else is thinking: she looks like a troll. But is she starring in Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia as the resident monstrosity? No! She plays the hot chick. We always hear about how a hometown beauty gives it all up, takes a Greyhound to Los Angeles with only $200, and gets discovered working at a diner. These stories are inspirational and, for the most part, they give hope of being able to break the class barrier to Americans, regardless of whether or not it is realistic. When the rich troy movie placing their hideous spawn into magazines and fashion shows and calling their special uniqueness beauty, thats when we know capitalism has gone too far.

Continuing our midseason check in with the michael beasley conferences& next, the Big 12.

F4 Caliber. Kansas would be another huge disappointment if theyre not playing in April this year. Texas and Texas A&M both have the talent michael beasley make the F4 if things broke right, although wed say the Horns have the better shot. Neither team is a favorite to make it, though.

Most Likely to Collapse. Kansas St. This team has seemed shaky in the nonconference schedule, and the rugged Big 12 is no place for teams to get their sea legs. Michael Beasley is awesome, but the rest of the team doesnt seem to understand what theyre supposed to be doing.

Most Likely to Rise. Missouri. The Tigers have better talent and coaching than their record indicates. If Anderson can get his 40MoH style clicking, Mizzou could be considerably better by late February/early March.

Biggest Surprise. Baylor. One of the biggest in the nation in our eyes. The Bears have several solid wins on neutral courts and played Wazzu and Arkansas very tough in their only two losses. Lets see if they can improve upon consecutive 4-12 finishes in the Big 12.

Biggest Disappointment. Oklahoma St. Sean Suttons tenure hasnt been marked with the same tenacious defense that his fathers teams were notorious for. A third straight NIT appearance wont be handled very well in Stillwater.

Prophets of old had it lucky, if you could call it that. God talked to them in dramatic ways, you can almost read all the exclamation points—burning bushes, stone tablets, visitation by angels—it was clear, at least for purposes of the story, that GOD was talking (and perhaps that G-O-D needs to be all in caps too!).

Life just isn’t that easy these days. We belong to a religion that tells us revelation isn’t sealed. And that leaves us searching beyond the Bible, beyond other holy texts, to the fabric of our lives. God seldom talks in CAPS and exclamation points anymore (if he/she/it ever did beyond campfire stories of some desert herds from thousands of years ago). And that leaves us wondering: just what authority should we turn to; how do we know what to pay attention to; which guru to listen to; should we pray 5 times a day to Mecca; or do bows, chanting and prostrations at the temple; or what?! Sometimes it once is not enough seems easier to give it all up and say â€SIt’s all hogwash! Harrumph!”

Samuel Longfellow’s words read, â€SLo, that word abideth ever; revelation is not sealed, answering now to our endeavor, truth and right are still revealed.” For some people, coming out of the Unitarian Universalist tradition, they’ve heard that sentiment before and have some idea about what it means; and for some coming out of a strong Christian background, they’ve got some idea about that it means, because they heard talk of â€Sthe revealed truth” over and over in reference to the Bible. But for those coming out of the â€Üstay at and read the New York Times tradition,’ that line probably means little to nothing to them!

But its kind of cool, and really one of the best things about being UU; so I thought I ought to bring it up. We UUs, both the Universalists and the Unitarians, have gone through a lot of changes over the years. Sometimes we’ve talked about Jesus and sometimes we haven’t; sometimes we’ve talked about God and sometimes once is not enough haven’t; sometimes we’ve focused on growing little bitty groups and sometimes great big churches—but one of the few things that hasn’t ever changed is this concept that â€Ürevelation is not sealed.’

It’s a powerful idea, that perhaps there are messages from the Ultimate out there for us to find. It makes life much more a quest. As we encounter things, we think: â€SAm I paying attention? Was I really getting what I was supposed to get out of this circumstance, once is not enough book, this chance encounter, this sunrise, this summer vacation, this life-long partnership, and so many other places?” The idea that there is wisdom out there, whether one sees it as a message from God, or as simply the duty of humankind to keep searching for meaning: this concept is powerful. It’s powerful for two reasons; one is that we have to seek and search all the time, not knowing where we will find a gem. And the other reason is that it grants us the wisdom, the strength, the human nobility enough to discern wisdom for ourselves. We are good enough to discern good.

Now once is not enough is where the prophets come in. Our teaching really makes you all modern-day prophets. Let’s return to the prophets of old, first. Their general message was: â€SRepent, or you’re doomed.” Right? At least, that’s the basic, Reader’s Digest version. Well, let’s unpack that a bit for our modern sensibilities.

So, what they tended want people to do was to return to God and God’s teachings. They were distressed that people seemed to be running about like chickens with their heads cut off, not paying much attention to what was most important in their lives. (Starting to sound more familiar?)

The most basic teachings of God would be the 10 Commandments, right? So let’s think about what they, those prophets of old, perhaps were hoping to see out of people. They were hoping for #1—people not to disrespect what was of ultimate importance to them. This is what it means not to take God’s name in vain. It means not to take what you to be good, and true, once is enough right, and full of love, and turn your back on it, treat it disrespectfully, say bad things about it. And then the prophets of old didn’t want people to lie, to cheat, to steal, to steal one another’s partners, to be disrespectful of our parents, to murder.

Well, heck—we all know that this is true. That if people break these rules, they are doomed. We don’t know about afterlife, but we know that this once is not enough of stuff makes for a pretty miserable current life. It’s pretty easy to see on the individual scale. It is pretty easy to advise a friend: â€SYeah, once is not enough it may be once is not enough to skim a little extra money at work, but goodness, think of what it
would do to your husband and kids if you got caught and ended up in prison.” Or: â€SYeah, I know that sometimes it’s tempting to consider what fun it might be to hook up with a beautiful young woman from but real relationships are built on trust, and you’ve got such a lovely wife, who really trusts you. Are you willing to give that all up?” I think most once is not enough us—given an individual situation of deciding about these kinds of ethical or moral decisions—would have words of advice.

What I think our religion asks of us to do is to actually take a step back from the individual and look at society. Like the prophets of old, whose clarity helped them to see that their current society was suffering from the ill effects of not connecting what they probably all really knew was good and right, they were â€Sdoomed.” And we as Unitarian Universalists, who are gifted with the teaching that revelation is not sealed, are able to look about us and see many important teachings that we need to share LOUDLY, STRONGLY, LOVINGLY with the world.

We once is not enough to be prophets—each and every one of us. Our love of scientific inquiry allows us to clearly the damage of overpopulation from all quarters. Our brave acceptance of people whose sexual identity or gender identity differ from society’s sense normal, has allowed us to come to see the humanness—the spark of the holy—that emanates as much from someone who is gay or lesbian or transgendered as from any one else. Our learning about educational methods and love of children has led us to be pioneers in how we teach our Sunday Schools, from indoctrination to learning how to think, morally—how to explore, religiously—how to be, humanly.

We need to be living prophets. We can only manage this task in the cradle and springboard of life in this special religious Moses bowed before Yahweh on Mount Sinai, humbled by the monumental commission he had just received from God, Moses actually tried to get out of the job: â€SWho am I that I should go to Pharaoh? he pleaded.   O my Lord, please send someone else.” But in five words, Yahweh delivered a promise which emboldened Moses, and still rings in our ears today: â€SI will be with you.”

The story is worth reading (Exodus 3-4)—and so is this community’s vision. It is full of challenges and opportunities for putting your faith into action. You may think about it and say: â€SWho am I?” or, even like Moses: â€SLord, please send someone else.” But once is not enough like Moses, can find strength in those ancient and powerful words: â€SI will be with you.”

To a sometimes Humanist, sometimes Theist, but always â€Üthinking about it’ crowd, this â€ÜI will be with you,’ business may seem a bit dicey, a bit â€Üold school.’ It’s easy to think of the Holocaust and think that whole bit of God being with you may not be quite right.

But I think we, as those â€Ürevelation is not sealed’ types need to keep seeing how the ultimate is revealed to us, and how it isn’t. This is our endeavor. Clearly, in the face of the Holocaust, what is ultimate isn’t so powerful as to change the course of human events. Some Jews say, â€SGod wept along side us.”

So that brings us back to pondering what does it mean, this phrase: â€SI will be with you”? Times that I have had a sense of God being with me, some of the most powerful experiences I’ve had, have been at church, or with church members.

Once, when I was pre-teen, perhaps a dawning teenager, I remember being once is not enough our church basement. I was cleaning up a classroom with once is not enough help of another churchwoman after we had taught the younger kids. I remember we were talking here and there, as we worked, and finally we sat down at the little, short round table, in short chairs, and we talked. I can’t remember how it started, I think she asked me something innocent, but I what I do remember most was that I felt heard. I felt like I was able to say things to this woman that I had never been able to say before, things of teenage angst, things of my passions, my fears. I remember it once is not enough the first time I ever really felt listened to.

Humanists might say that what transpired between me and that churchwoman was an example of humans acting with their greatest potential. Theists might say that God was present in that moment. It is incredibly important that you figure out your own language to describe such moments, so that you can speak of them with some authenticity. But what Unitarian Universalism teaches us is that it doesn’t matter at all what we call it, only that we do call it, we do name and we strive to build and maintain communities that allow for just such moments to happen over and over again—moments such as these moments, where a person can feel heard, where a person can feel valuable. Because I know for me that it was incredibly powerful to feel heard. It felt like the first time ever, that I wasn’t really as invisible as I felt. It was an incredible blessing for me. And for that churchwoman, whose name I can’t even remember, I once is not enough only imagine what she felt.

As a minister, I get to listen to a lot of people sit and try and tell me something very important to them. At those moments, I feel like a midwife—like if I only can stay focused, task, remember my lessons, my wisdom, my calm, this baby which is trying to be born on the tongue of the person sitting in front of me once is not enough come out beautifully. And it is always beautiful, just like babies that are born a bit squashed and bloodied and ungainly are beautiful—because it represents life. And as a midwife, you catch the baby; hold it for a moment, and say, â€SIt’s beautiful,” as you gently hand them their beautiful baby. Even if the story is of deep sorrow, fierce anger, or wretched pain, the watching of someone finding words to that story is a sight to see. And when, in their stumbling around, muttering, they somehow once is not enough to utter what is truly inside—something is born, and it is beautiful.

Unitarian Universalism asks us to be the keepers of this sacred task, of helping each other find meaning. We don’t have to think of ourselves, our church, as once is not enough only place this happens. But we are powerfully good at it. When we really sit down together and try, we who care so much about the world—so much about each other—can make incredible connections with each other—can give birth to beautiful babies.

Christina Baldwin writes: â€SWhen we live in a family, a community, a country where we know each other’s true stories, we remember our capacity to lean once is not enough and love each other into wholeness.”

As we have spent the year so far, talking with each other about our vision for this community, what I have carried away stronger than any other message, is that this has been a once is not enough that has mattered for people; And their hope, their vision, is that it will thrive so that others can experience this thing: call it grace, call it humans at their best, call it that â€ÜI’ll be with you’ call it the â€Üjuice of life’—we just wish it for all of the Cedar Valley, in abundance.

I read somewhere a Native American Medicine Man would ask the sick, â€SWhen was the last time you told your story?” He knew that telling our story once is not enough. There is too much meaning to be understood in just one telling. It’s in re-telling the story that we come to understand it ourselves. That we can love each other into wholeness.

This has been a place that has mattered for people, where they have felt loved, accepted, and could grow. It has been a place of healing, because there is space and time for them to tell their story. And their hope, their vision—our hope, our vision is that it will continue to be this place for everyone here, and for those yet to come.

As we look towards the future together, I want to affirm the once is not enough every moment has been good, without pain, struggle or heartbreak, but somehow together, you have given birth to this beautiful place we are in right now—together. It’s a place meaning a community of love and justice for all kinds of people—the itty-bitty sometimes cute, sometimes terrible kiddos toddling around to the elders who’ve been around the block a few more times than they’d care to mention—but do have some wisdom to share with us about their journey.

Well, I’ve talked about Prophets—the ones with the â€Üph.’ â€SBut didn’t you promise to talk about â€Üprofits’—the ones with the â€Üf’ too, Eva?”—you are wondering. It’s true, I did. And besides being cute, I think this is something that merits thinking about. You know, in this consumer-based society, everything is about profit and loss. It’s the currency, the prime mover and decision-making force in our culture. And here I am talking about making a difference. And so, I need to sell you on this point, right? Because you are all enmeshed, inoculated, heck, even inculcated into this culture, right? So, let’s think about this for a minute.

It’s hard to put a value on religious experience. It’s hard to put a value on experience in general. I remember during an NPR pledge drive in Chicago, they’d always ask: â€SIsn’t listening to Morning Edition worth as much to you as that dollar you spend on a cup of coffee each morning?” I always wished once is not enough didn’t ask that—I never bought a cup of coffee in the morning. It was hard to make meaning of that.

But I was thinking about how once is not enough value religious experience, and I thought about that time I got to tell my story—and the many other really amazing and important experiences that happened to me at a UU church, or because of the UUs in my life.  And, I’d once is not enough to invite you to take some time this week and assess your profits; what you’ve gained. Make a list of all the things you can think once is not enough that made you think, a hug with your coffee, a phone call from someone at just the right moment, getting to share your mom’s special recipe, hearing someone lighting the chalice and saying a few words—and feel so connected to them. Only you know what your own experiences have been. Take some time, and think about them. Write them down. Make a profit statement.

Don’t just do this to think about what this place owes you, or to anticipate what you might get in the future—but do this to help make you a better prophet (the kind with the â€Üph’), because it will help you to get passionate. It will help you to remember really how special this place is, and how we want to keep that good thing going: for us, for our kids, our grandkids.

If you are new to this community and not used to giving very much to a religious community, or scared to give, because it reminds you of a restrictive, repressive past—I need you to give generously to this place, to this ministry, to this cradle of human endeavor. We need you to give generously to this ministry.

And if you’ve been coming here for years, giving what you thought you could, or maybe thought was enough, I want you to think about how really special this place really is to you, how many dreams we have for a future with more staff and a larger building, a whole bunch more people coming—not because they have to, but because they want to, they want to be part of this community of love and justice. So I need you to give deeply, too.

We will have to work together to create this dream we once is not enough have. We can see that this world can be a better place—that humans can live lives of meaning, purpose, and deliberate love. We can continue to have this be a place of healing and wholeness, as we each can grow, as we tell our stories. Let’s make a difference together here is this Cedar Valley. On this day when we begin our pledge drive, let’s pledge to ourselves that we can do it. We can grow into our dreams.

Today, as you think about all there is to be done in areas of peace, poverty, planet earth, and peoples rights, take heart—and then, once is not enough ACTION.

im tired.  drove bobby fischer to denver yesterday, in the crappy snowy weather, to meet my daughter, who drove in from st louis.  she is staying with us over the christmas break, for a bout a month.  this morning, we woke up and drove back home, and here i am, unwashed, tired.

i fear my chess studies will  be even more interrupted, since the kid is visiting for a month.

im going over alekhines games, having a blast doing it, what fun games they are.    in all this time, ive managed to read This crazy world of chess, the reletively new book by GM Larry Evans.  i read the signed copy i got from him at reno a few months ago.

what a fun book!  there are bobby fischer chapters, each about 2 pages long, with the longest chapter being, i think, chapter 28, at 16 pages.   the book is a bunch of essays, anecdotes, stories, memories.  a few games are in there, but only at the end of the chapters about something that had to do with the games played, for example, there is a chapter on ray charles interest in chess, and at the end is the game played between ray charles and larry evans.

the book is great for chess players and non-players alike.  it should almost be required reading for serious chess players, as it gives a good modern history and mythology about the chess world, and we should know where weve been.  its great for people who know nothing about chess, as it is just intersting how much craziness and weird crap surrounds the game.  scandals, themystery of alekhines death, stuff about bobby fischer you probably dont know, unless you are edwin dutch defense meyer, who knows all about fischer.

there will never be a this crazy world of monopoly or even this crazy world scrabble, although the professional scrabble world has its share of weirdness.

a super interesting insiders look into the chess world, all in bite sized pieces that you dont even have to read in order.

No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak give me liberty or give me death my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The questing before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and give me liberty or give me death proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.

Mr. President, it is natural to man to give me liberty or give me death in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House. Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a give me liberty or give me death Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with those warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. 17 year old charismatic, but vocally challenged, Sanjaya Malakar threatened the credibility of â€SAmerican Idol”, by being one of the most popular contestants in the competition who was capable of winning. Was the voting american idol to make sure he would come in last and be booted off the show?

I’m not surprised that Sanjaya, famous for his hair, performed wearing last week. It’s a favorite â€SIdol trick” to change the way a contestant looks drastically if they don’t want them to win. Look at how they â€Sdorked up” Kellie Pickler, last year on the night she lost! Another favorite trick american idol discourage voters is to â€Sadvise” or â€Sallow” a singer to perform a song that is a less than perfect match for them, not to mention making the vocal too loud to magnify bad notes!

â€SShock Jock” Howard Stern asked his millions of listeners to vote for Sanjaya, in order to undermine â€SAmerican Idol” and everything it stands for! I’m positive â€SIdols” creator, Simon Fuller, wouldn’t just stand by and let this happen!

I remember a few seasons ago a little girl in Hawaii, Jasmine Trias, inexplicably remained in the competition in spite of having minimal talent. It was later revealed that because of a 6 hour time difference and a fan base working a bank of power dialers, they were able to cast millions and millions of votes for their home girl!

Are down 10% from last year!

I don’t believe Howard Stern would’ve paid a penny to employ â€SPower Dialers”, just to make a point. I don’t believe Sanjaya’s, â€STweenie” fan base could vote for their heartthrob any more than they did. I do believe, however, that someone who has an interest in keeping the billion dollar â€SAmerican Idol” franchise intact did take some action.

Someone who knew that each one of the millions of votes cast by â€SPower Dialers” in Hawaii would go through, because Hawaii starts voting hours after the rest of America has stopped! Someone who knew the results of the voting on the mainland could have appropriated votes to contestants who actually scored lower than Sanjaya…that would place him at the bottom and voted off!

Who would american idol something like this?

American Idol headed to its second audition city Wednesday night.  Dallas might have found Idol its first star seven years ago, but the pickings were pretty slim this time around.

In total, 24 hopefuls got a golden ticket guaranteeing them a trip to Hollywood.  But I truly have to wonder how many of these two dozen will actually make it past the next round.  My guess  two tops.

You know the great state of Texas is running short on talent when Simon starts telling Randy that his has to give this girl a chance.  But Im not sure it was Kayla Hatfield, 24, rendition of Janis Joplins Piece of My Heart we re brothers forever won over Simon or her bubbly personality.  Simon went as far as to we re brothers forever her that he wanted to be her for one hour a day.

Simon was also campaigning for Oklahoma State junior Kyle Ensley, who has political ambitions of his own that include the Governors Mansion in his home state.  Although I dont think Paula was sold on his version of Somebody to Love by Queen, a nudge from Simon swayed her.

But Simon wasnt all sunshine.  He Tulsa native Alaina Whitaker that she wasnt as good as she thought she was and called 21-year-old Brandon Green forgettable.  However, Im not sure Ryan will easily forget Green, or at least his hobby of peeling his finger nails and saving them in a bag.  Nonetheless both Whitaker and Green won over Randy and Paula for a trip to Hollywood.

Not even pictures of the kids he counsels could save 80s throwback Kyle Reinneck of Edwardsville, IL from Simon, who called him menancing.

While talent did not abound in Dallas, neither did the eccentric. 

Judges were limited to hassling 19-year-old Bruce Dickson of Bastrop, TX about his personal life.  When a rejected Dickson, who proudly professed that hed never had an intimate relationship with a woman and that he was saving himself for his first kiss on his wedding day, asked for advice, Simon told him to kiss some also brought in newlywed Angela Reillys husband, a model who helped her prepare for the audition.  Simon tried without success to get Angelas hubby to criticize her performance.  Hopefully their marriage is better than her singing.

We were also treated to two montages we re brothers forever auditions - one of cross dressing men and one of Kelly Clarkson fans singing the hometown girls hit Since U Been Gone.  In all honesty, Im not sure which segment was scarier.  But the guy going on about how breezy his dress was probably the scales.

And finally we met Simons biggest fan, Renaldo Lapuz.  This we re brothers forever native was dressed in we re brothers forever of James Brown.  Whether they were giddy with exhaustion or moved by his reverence for Simon, the judges were embraced his performance of his original composition Were Brothers Forever.

Renaldo might actually have been the highlight for the evening if they hadnt hyped his audition, which was the very last one of the night, throughout the entire show.  The only thing that annoyed me more was the Moment of Truth ads across the bottom of the screen for two hours.

My picks for the evening are Kady Mallory of Houston and Drew Poppelreiter, 24.

Simon told Malloy that she was the best hed seen so far and given the limited prospect Id have agree.  Although this 18-year-old does vocal impressions that included Whitney Houston and Carrie Underwood, I agree with the judges that she sounded best when she sang Unchained Melody as herself.

A farmer from Saltillo, MS who sings on his tractor when he gets lonely, Poppelreiter has we re brothers forever country sound that shone when he sang George Straits Check Yes or No.  Hell have to work a bit on his stage presence, but I think he has potential.  Hes definitely got the sweet, polite country boy down, right to the fact that his trip to Hollywood will be his first time on a plane.

Overall, Dallas was not an exciting night, unless you were the contestant who went into labor while waiting for her audition.  She named her child - what else - Idol.

At least we were spared the foul-mouth contestants we left in Philly.  My husband was disappointed in his hope to find either a contestant with a cool rock sound or a gong to help with eliminations.

Thankfully the next audition isnt until next Tuesday when American Idol heads to San Diego.

Blue Nines and Red Words

I was born on January 31, 1979 — a Wednesday. I know it was a Wednesday, because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue, like the number 9 or the sound of loud voices arguing. I like my birth date, because of the way Im able to visualize most of the numbers in it smooth and round shapes, similar to pebbles on a beach. Thats because they are prime numbers: 31, 19, 197, 97, 79 and 1979 are all divisible only by themselves and 1. I can recognize every prime up to 9,973 by their pebble-like quality. Its just the way my brain works.

I have a condition known as savant syndrome, little known before its portrayal by actor Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar-winning 1988 film Rain Man. Like Hoffmans character, Raymond Babbitt, I have an synesthesia obsessive synesthesia for order and routine which affects virtually every aspect of my life.

For example, synesthesia exactly 45 grams of porridge for breakfast each morning; I weigh the bowl with an electronic scale to make sure. Then I count the number of items of clothing Im wearing before I leave my house. I get anxious if I cant drink my cups of tea at the same time each day. Whenever I become too stressed and I cant breathe properly, I close my eyes and count. Thinking of numbers helps me to become calm again.

Numbers are my friends, and they are always around me. Each one is unique and has its own personality. The number 11 is friendly and 5 is loud, whereas 4 is both shy and quiet — its my favorite number, perhaps because it reminds me of myself. Some synesthesia big — 23, 667, 1,179 — while others are small: 6, 13, 581. Some are beautiful, like 333, and some are ugly, like 289. To me, every number is special.

No matter where I go or what Im doing, numbers are never far from my thoughts. In an interview with talk show host David Letterman in New York, I told David he looked like the number 117 — tall and lanky. Later outside, in the appropriately numerically named Times Square, I gazed up at the towering skyscrapers and felt surrounded by 9s — the number I most associate with feelings of immensity.

My synesthesia also affects how I perceive words and language. The word for example, is blue and shiny, while hoop is a soft, white word. The same thing happens when I read words in other languages: jardin, the French word for garden, is synesthesia yellow, while hnugginn — Icelandic for sad — is white with lots of blue specks. Synesthesia researchers have reported that colored words tend to obtain their colors from the initial letter of the word, and this is generally true for me: yogurt is a yellow word, video is purple (perhaps linked with violet) and gate is green. I can even make the color of a word change by mentally adding initial letters to turn the word into another: at is a red word, but add the letter H to get hat and it becomes a white word. If I then add a letter T to make that, the words color is now orange. Not all words fit the initial-letter pattern: words beginning with the letter A, for example, are always red and those beginning with W are always dark blue.

I was very excited to learn that two creative independent games that I posted about audiosurf are finalists in the 2008 Independent Games Festival.  Both World of Goo and Crayon Physics Deluxe were nominated for the Seumas McNally audiosurf Prize.  The other Seumas McNally Grand Prize finalists are Audiosurf, Hammerfall, and Noitu Love 2: Devolution.  In addition, World of Goo has been nominated for the Design Innovation Award and for Technical Excellence.

Particularly since Petri Purho posted this on his Kloonigames blog, Ive been anxious to see how it turns out.  It has quite a bit of promise, in my opinion, and its great to see it doing well at IGF.  World of Goo looks to have a great, silly fun in it, loaded with creativity.  Hopefully both of these games will do well when the winners are announced.

Moore Declines Run for Lotts Senate Seat

In an open letter, former Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore (D) said he would not seek Sen. Trent Lotts (R-MS) seat in the special election scheduled Nov. 4, the Clarion Ledger reports. 

Aside from Moore, early speculation ralph reed Democratic contenders for the seat centered on former Govs. Ronnie Musgrove and Ray Mabus, as well as former 2nd District U.S. Rep. Mike Espy, former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson and state Rep. Erik Fleming, who ran against Lott in 2006. 

Meanwhile, on the GOP side, Gov. Haley Barbour (R) is expected to appoint an interim senator 10 days after Lott’s resignation takes effect. Many believe who will run for the seat in November rests on who Barbour appoints. Reps. Chip Pickering and Roger Wicker have led pack of possible contenders.

 

 

Two New House Members

Bob Latta of Ohio and Rob Wittman of Virginia were sworn in today as ralph reed two newest House members by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to CQ Politics.

The two Republicans won special elections on Tuesday to replace members who died. The House now has 233 Democrats, 201 Republicans and one vacancy, the seat once held by ralph reed Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) who resigned Nov. 26.

 

 

Reactions to the Democratic Debate

Carol Hunter: With the race so tight in Iowa, one might have expected more fireworks. In other venues, Sen. Edwards and Sen. Obama have been much more critical of Sen. Clinton, the national front-runner. Not today, though. They all aimed their fire at the Bush administration.

Romney Keeps Lead in New Hampshire, Thompson Implodes

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey in New Hampshire finds Mitt Romney still leading the Republican presidential race with 33% support, followed by Sen. John McCain at 18%, Rudy Giuliani at 15% and Mike Huckabee at 14%.

As a result, the Granite State is one of the few places not seeing a Huckabee surge. Romney has held a firm lead there for months.

Most stunning result: Fred Thompson at 2% has fallen so low that he now trails both Ron Paul (8%) and Tom Tancredo (3%). Just three months ago, Thompson got 19% in the same poll.

A new American Research Group national poll shows Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee are tied for first place in the Republican presidential race with 21%, followed by Sen. John McCain at 18%, Mitt Romney at 16% and Fred Thompson at 6%.

Just a month ago, Huckabee was in fifth place in the same poll with just 6% support.

Among Democrats, Sen. Hillary Clinton leads with 41% support, followed by Sen. Barack Obama at 22%, and John Edwards at 13%.

Those close to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the billionaire is considering a White House bid, despite his repeated denials. Moreover, friends and advisers said, developments make a candidacy more conceivable, according to the Wall Street Journal.

No expects Bloomberg to make a untraceable decision until after the Republican and Democratic nominees are known.

 

Landrieu Locked in Tight Re-Election Battle

A new SurveyUSA/Roll Call poll in Lousiana shows twilight zone Mary Landrieu (D-LA) edging likely GOP rival John Kennedy, 46% to 42%, within the surveys 3.9% margin of sampling error. 

Key findings: Kennedy leads by 12 among men; Landrieu leads by 19 among women; a 31-point Gender Gap. Kennedy leads by 22 among whites. Landrieu leads by 60 among blacks. Kennedy holds 76% of the GOP base. Landrieu holds 73% of ralph reed Democrat base. 

Roll Call: The increasingly large target on Landrieu’s back stems from her close winning percentages in her two previous elections (52 percent in 2002 and 46 percent in 1996) and her state’s conservative bent (President Bush carried Louisiana with 57 percent in 2004).

Clinton Insiders Blame Penn

Clinton campaign insiders are increasingly questioning the cautious, poll-driven approach taken by Mark Penn, Sen. Hillary Clintons top political aide, Newday reports. With Clintons lead fading in most early state and national polls, dissatisfaction is growing with Penn, who some say has mistakenly run Clinton as a de facto incumbent. 

Said on insider: There are two people who have come up with this strategy  one Hillary Clinton and one Mark Penn. Mark wanted to run ralph reed basically, for re-election, and we are seeing what happened. 

Clintons aides insist that no shake-up is imminent and that Penn still has her ear. But they concede Bill Clinton has taken a more active behind-the-scenes role as her campaign flags. 

The issue: Many aides want Clinton to go on the offensive but Penn thinks attacks will only drive up Clintons already high negatives. 

 

Clinton, Giuliani Lead Big in New Jersey

The latest Quinnipiac poll from isha sesay Jersey shows Sen. Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani running away from their rivals in their primary races, but are deadlocked in a hypothetical general election match up.

Said pollster Clay Richards: New Jersey voters know the girl and boy next door, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Mayor Rudolph ralph reed and apparently are sticking with them. Theres no Oprah bump in Sen. Barack Obamas numbers and the Huckabee factor is minor in the Republican race, where Sen. John McCain is the second place contender.

New Jerseys primary is on February 5.

Ive been posting at the Manchester Union Leaders discussion forums, making points for Rudy Giuliani, but lately, theyre not posting my contributions there, censoring support for Rudy, whom they obviously resent for some reason, just look at the negative coverage he gets in the Union Leader.

So New Hampshire voters need to decide if they want to follow the endorsement of a newspaper which censors discussion-input for Giuliani;  those are discussion forums supposedly, but in reality, theyre puff zones for anybody but Giuliani, strange to see, but this censorship of an opinion format, supposedly open to various opinions, speaks volumes about how the Leader views the political process, to be controlled, managed, and manipulated.  Go Rudy!
