American Idol headed to its second audition city Wednesday night. Dallas might have found Idol its first star seven years ago, but the pickings were pretty slim this time around. You know the great state of Texas is running short on talent when Simon starts telling Randy that his has to give this girl a chance. But Im not sure it was Kayla Hatfield, 24, rendition of Janis Joplins Piece of My Heart we re brothers forever won over Simon or her bubbly personality. Simon went as far as to we re brothers forever her that he wanted to be her for one hour a day. Simon was also campaigning for Oklahoma State junior Kyle Ensley, who has political ambitions of his own that include the Governors Mansion in his home state. Although I dont think Paula was sold on his version of Somebody to Love by Queen, a nudge from Simon swayed her. But Simon wasnt all sunshine. He Tulsa native Alaina Whitaker that she wasnt as good as she thought she was and called 21-year-old Brandon Green forgettable. However, Im not sure Ryan will easily forget Green, or at least his hobby of peeling his finger nails and saving them in a bag. Nonetheless both Whitaker and Green won over Randy and Paula for a trip to Hollywood. Not even pictures of the kids he counsels could save 80s throwback Kyle Reinneck of Edwardsville, IL from Simon, who called him menancing. While talent did not abound in Dallas, neither did the eccentric. Judges were limited to hassling 19-year-old Bruce Dickson of Bastrop, TX about his personal life. When a rejected Dickson, who proudly professed that hed never had an intimate relationship with a woman and that he was saving himself for his first kiss on his wedding day, asked for advice, Simon told him to kiss some also brought in newlywed Angela Reillys husband, a model who helped her prepare for the audition. Simon tried without success to get Angelas hubby to criticize her performance. Hopefully their marriage is better than her singing. We were also treated to two montages we re brothers forever auditions - one of cross dressing men and one of Kelly Clarkson fans singing the hometown girls hit Since U Been Gone. In all honesty, Im not sure which segment was scarier. But the guy going on about how breezy his dress was probably the scales. And finally we met Simons biggest fan, Renaldo Lapuz. This we re brothers forever native was dressed in we re brothers forever of James Brown. Whether they were giddy with exhaustion or moved by his reverence for Simon, the judges were embraced his performance of his original composition Were Brothers Forever. Renaldo might actually have been the highlight for the evening if they hadnt hyped his audition, which was the very last one of the night, throughout the entire show. The only thing that annoyed me more was the Moment of Truth ads across the bottom of the screen for two hours. My picks for the evening are Kady Mallory of Houston and Drew Poppelreiter, 24. Simon told Malloy that she was the best hed seen so far and given the limited prospect Id have agree. Although this 18-year-old does vocal impressions that included Whitney Houston and Carrie Underwood, I agree with the judges that she sounded best when she sang Unchained Melody as herself. A farmer from Saltillo, MS who sings on his tractor when he gets lonely, Poppelreiter has we re brothers forever country sound that shone when he sang George Straits Check Yes or No. Hell have to work a bit on his stage presence, but I think he has potential. Hes definitely got the sweet, polite country boy down, right to the fact that his trip to Hollywood will be his first time on a plane. Overall, Dallas was not an exciting night, unless you were the contestant who went into labor while waiting for her audition. She named her child - what else - Idol. At least we were spared the foul-mouth contestants we left in Philly. My husband was disappointed in his hope to find either a contestant with a cool rock sound or a gong to help with eliminations. Thankfully the next audition isnt until next Tuesday when American Idol heads to San Diego. |

Blue Nines and Red Words I was born on January 31, 1979 — a Wednesday. I know it was a Wednesday, because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue, like the number 9 or the sound of loud voices arguing. I like my birth date, because of the way Im able to visualize most of the numbers in it smooth and round shapes, similar to pebbles on a beach. Thats because they are prime numbers: 31, 19, 197, 97, 79 and 1979 are all divisible only by themselves and 1. I can recognize every prime up to 9,973 by their pebble-like quality. Its just the way my brain works. I have a condition known as savant syndrome, little known before its portrayal by actor Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar-winning 1988 film Rain Man. Like Hoffmans character, Raymond Babbitt, I have an synesthesia obsessive synesthesia for order and routine which affects virtually every aspect of my life. For example, synesthesia exactly 45 grams of porridge for breakfast each morning; I weigh the bowl with an electronic scale to make sure. Then I count the number of items of clothing Im wearing before I leave my house. I get anxious if I cant drink my cups of tea at the same time each day. Whenever I become too stressed and I cant breathe properly, I close my eyes and count. Thinking of numbers helps me to become calm again. Numbers are my friends, and they are always around me. Each one is unique and has its own personality. The number 11 is friendly and 5 is loud, whereas 4 is both shy and quiet — its my favorite number, perhaps because it reminds me of myself. Some synesthesia big — 23, 667, 1,179 — while others are small: 6, 13, 581. Some are beautiful, like 333, and some are ugly, like 289. To me, every number is special. No matter where I go or what Im doing, numbers are never far from my thoughts. In an interview with talk show host David Letterman in New York, I told David he looked like the number 117 — tall and lanky. Later outside, in the appropriately numerically named Times Square, I gazed up at the towering skyscrapers and felt surrounded by 9s — the number I most associate with feelings of immensity. My synesthesia also affects how I perceive words and language. The word for example, is blue and shiny, while hoop is a soft, white word. The same thing happens when I read words in other languages: jardin, the French word for garden, is synesthesia yellow, while hnugginn — Icelandic for sad — is white with lots of blue specks. Synesthesia researchers have reported that colored words tend to obtain their colors from the initial letter of the word, and this is generally true for me: yogurt is a yellow word, video is purple (perhaps linked with violet) and gate is green. I can even make the color of a word change by mentally adding initial letters to turn the word into another: at is a red word, but add the letter H to get hat and it becomes a white word. If I then add a letter T to make that, the words color is now orange. Not all words fit the initial-letter pattern: words beginning with the letter A, for example, are always red and those beginning with W are always dark blue. |

I was very excited to learn that two creative independent games that I posted about audiosurf are finalists in the 2008 Independent Games Festival. Both World of Goo and Crayon Physics Deluxe were nominated for the Seumas McNally audiosurf Prize. The other Seumas McNally Grand Prize finalists are Audiosurf, Hammerfall, and Noitu Love 2: Devolution. In addition, World of Goo has been nominated for the Design Innovation Award and for Technical Excellence. Particularly since Petri Purho posted this on his Kloonigames blog, Ive been anxious to see how it turns out. It has quite a bit of promise, in my opinion, and its great to see it doing well at IGF. World of Goo looks to have a great, silly fun in it, loaded with creativity. Hopefully both of these games will do well when the winners are announced. |

In an open letter, former Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore (D) said he would not seek Sen. Ive been posting at the Manchester Union Leaders discussion forums, making points for Rudy Giuliani, but lately, theyre not posting my contributions there, censoring support for Rudy, whom they obviously resent for some reason, just look at the negative coverage he gets in the Union Leader. So New Hampshire voters need to decide if they want to follow the endorsement of a newspaper which censors discussion-input for Giuliani; those are discussion forums supposedly, but in reality, theyre puff zones for anybody but Giuliani, strange to see, but this censorship of an opinion format, supposedly open to various opinions, speaks volumes about how the Leader views the political process, to be controlled, managed, and manipulated. Go Rudy! |
