I'm painting my apartment

I'm painting my apartment. It was beige, it will soon be white.The fellows from the church took away the couch today, and after I sat and looked around a bit, I went shopping for paint. The white makes it look like an art gallery, that's fine by me. So far, it makes it look fresher than the beige; eg. pale woodwork, green plant, white wall. The couch was beige (and brown) too, hardwood floor... too much stuff almost the same colour. I want to go shopping for a new couch, I have my eye on a green one from Ikea - but I figure now that I have a bit more room, it's a good opportunity to paint. My sister and my friend at work would be horrified that I'm just pushing stuff just far away enough from the wall to paint, but if I sorted it out, it would take way longer. So far it's taken me 4 hours to work through 1 can of paint... I just want to get it done. I've never used a flat finish paint before, it looks great! Most of my furniture was free, so buying new stuff, well, it's time. I've lived like a student long enough. I was starting to really hate how it looked... the couch was a weird elaborate shape, and a slipcover couldn't hide that. What clinched it was when I saw one just like it in the Trailer Park Boys movie.

I'm really grooving to it... had a good day at work and I'm just chilling.He's kind of imitating Serge Gainsbourg, and there's the Sergio Mendes style backup singers. I gotta say I'm glad Stephane Dion is the top Liberal now.A guy at my work didn't like Ignatieff... I don't know the exact reason why but I got the impression he was slimy.Bob Rae already had a crack at running the province... wants to be the next prime minister? AS. IF. He admitted he made mistakes running the province... THERE's a hint that you should do something alternate, if there ever was one. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. so my parents are moving

so my parents are moving... no definite date, but it WILL happen, likely sooner than I'd like... I imagine sometime this coming summer.So I'm cleaning my junk out of their house. Now that I have a car again, it's way easier (public transit does NOT go to their house). I have liberated about 3 garbage bags of clothing from their house, I've done a few loads of laundry, and picked out which items are going to Goodwill. I've had to wash anything that was not packed in Rubbermaid tubs... basements = EVIL! They WILL grow mould at some point, it's only a matter of time. If I ever have a house with a basement, nothing valuable is going into it. What is truly shocking is the size of the shirts I wore back in 1989. They look huge now, to my eyes. There were certainly no American Apparel girly Ts back then - I wore a men's medium, square garments with no concession to the female form. I had blouses like that too - big and square. I guess it was related to that whole Boy George androgyny thing in the 80s. Some stuff I'm keeping... printed Ts from jobs and from university, and a few staple items, such as Levis 531s and a Daniel Hechter sweatshirt, to maybe show my little cousin what on earth I wore back then, but it's a good feeling to get rid of the other items. When you have a house that you can leave junk in, it's astounding what gets left behind. I'm just glad it's been awhile since I've seen these items (8-9 years) so I can be fairly objective - ie giving away all those huge white T-shirts instead of keeping them to use as pyjamas, etc. Next on my list for cleaning out when I go back: a closet filled with ancient Macintosh peripherals.

Some cats sit and stare at you when they want to be fed first thing in the morning. My aunt and uncle's cat would stand in front of the kitchen cupboard where the cat food was stored.However my cat knocks things off my bedside table, as her way of saying "feed me". Hair clips, coins, you name it. (actually I have a lot more junk on it than just that :D ) She doesn't knock something off 100% of the time, I just see her hop up on the table, and I brace myself for the sound of something falling. When I can't take it anymore, I get up and feed her.She's so silly.

Well I heard about Hafiz's poetry tonight on CBC Radio One

Well I heard about Hafiz's poetry tonight on CBC Radio One. Yummy stuff. The wikipedia entry doesn't do too much justice compared to the documentary stuff I heard on the radio. They compared 2 different translations of the same verse, and it's tricky stuff. They discussed how there is no gender in the Persian language... (well none used in this poetry anyhow) that must add another level of meaning to poetry that is pretty lush and sensual. It's ghazals, I think... devotional religious poetry that uses metaphors to hide its religious imagery: intoxication, with wine, but referring to religious ecstasy; lovers, meaning God (like the Song of Songs). According to this radio program, Sufism likes to refer to religious imagery not permitted in other flavours of Islam, so it became metaphors in the poetry. Whether written as religious imagery, or just as earthy poetry, who really knows I guess.Apparently Hafiz's poetry has remained part of the main culture of the everyday person. well I'm having a fun evening

well I'm having a fun evening. Some wine, cheese, and baking!!! Can I legitimately call myself desparate and single anymore when I'm having fun alone? ;) I'm baking ginger cake which always works, and soda bread which is constantly hit and miss. I'm sure the wine wasn't helping but it made it more fun. Oh and to make it even more cliched, I have Wensleydale cheese (or some other place James herriot wrote about) and Gruyere. Just lettin the flavours flav. Or whatever flavours do.

I saw Malajube today

I saw Malajube today, at Lee's Palace. Nice small venue, good opening acts.Malajube KICKED ASS. They proceeded to trash a guitar, and then a keyboard, but I think the keyboard was accidental, as it kind of got knocked over. Bocce was really good. They had a live drummer, and three, count-em, THREE keyboardists, and that was it. So they were pretty much electronic music, but with lots of texture, and very rock and roll. I bought one of their CDs.

well

well... I had to have Heidi put down today. We'll see how much Deena understands what's going on. It's still pretty unreal but I'm glad she's out of pain.Last night her hind end, she couldn't move her back legs, and they were getting a bit cold. The vet said this morning she had blood clots, probably blocking the blood flow, and there was no sure way to fix this, so I had her euthanized.I'm going to have a hot chocolate and an ensure, and I'm going back to bed.

Fucking hell. Heidi cannot move her back legs. I feel like I'm going to be sick. It's almost 1:30 am... is there a 24 hr vet? OMGOMGOMG OMG OMG OMGOMGI will have to go first thing tomorrow morning and she's making these caterwauly sounds :( :( :(

so yesterday I went to an Hour taping

so yesterday I went to an Hour taping... heh the one guest is a regular at my work so that was kind of funny. I said Hi to George, which was cool... he said he prefers having an audience. He said that before, he would get his friends to sit in, or random people or whoever, just because he didn't like playing to an empty room. Hmm!I then went to see my sister and her husband and 6 week old baby. It's neat having them live so close, I can see the little guy's growth progress, and my sister's pet name progress. Every time I go, the little names she has for the baby have been modified from their previous form. I finally got some math texts from Goodwill. I had to take the bus to get there, but it was worth it. I scored them from a bin that people put donations into, I saw a guy come in and dump them and I pinched them then and there. I had to get an employee to price them for me, they didn't get mad which was nice. I got a Finite one, and an older Algebra one... now all I need is Calculus to complete my set. The algebra one is so old that it trumpets Now In Metric SI Units! on the cover.
