Filjio, Puma 34, John Croat, Bruno Pogačnik Wukodrakula
From around 2007 until 2010, Zagreb’s public spaces were infested with a rash of enigmatic and frequently nightmarish images, most of which were executed on paper by an anonymous artist and pasted up on walls, rubbish bins and electricity sub-stations. They were initially signed with the tag Filjio, although subsequent works carried the name Puma 34. Not all of Puma 34’s works were executed by Pogačnik alone; other friends took part as well, and some of Pogačnik’s designs filtered through into the work of another street artist, OKO. Puma 34 moved from street corner to art gallery in 2009, exhibiting large-format, phantasmagorical collages in both Motovun and Zagreb. Pogačnik himself came out of anonymity in December 2011, producing the installation The Magic is Gone (But the Filth is still there) for the Lauba gallery under his own name. As he told the Croatian press at the time, he defined himself “not so much as a street artist, but more as a cyber shaman exploring the theme of the apocalypse”.
Bruno Pogačnik Wukodrakula (Filjio, Puma 34, John Croat) was born in Zagreb in 1981. He graduated from two faculties: the School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb and the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Department of Painting, in the class of Prof. Duje Jurić. Since 2004 he has been making illegal installations on the streets of Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Postojna, Graz, Vienna, Venice, Heilbronn, Lille, Luxembourg and other cities. In 2009 he founded the first Croatian street zine Zagrebstreetzine. In his apartment he organized Zagrebstreetzine Gallery, which hosted numerous artists. He has participated at many exhibitions: Non-permanent Exhibition of the Filip Trade Collection, Lauba, Zagreb, Croatia (2011), Mogag Galerie, Tokyo, Japan (2011), 5 Portrait Positions 2, Luxembourg (2010), T-HT@MSU, Zagreb, Croatia (2010), 45th Zagreb Salon, Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb (2010), Stereo Exhibition, Nova Gorica, Slovenia (2009), Finalists, Labin City Gallery, Croatia (2009), Studio 34, Student Centre Gallery, Zagreb (2009), Why So Serious, Motovun Film Festival, Croatia (2009) and many others. His work was published in magazines Zarez, Kontejner, Pendrek, Komikaze, in the publication of comic books C’est Bon Cultur Anthology 1, books Graffiti World by Nicholas Ganz, 500ml by Gautier Jourdain and Comics published by Turbo Comix, Beautiful Decay Artist Book (as DS SNIWT with Oko and Damir Žižić) and numerous other self-published zines. In 2009 he made the artist book Data Book of Hydrocarbons. He moved to New York in 2012 where he is pursuing his MFA from Columbia University.
