Down this road
As I wrote two posts about cover bands, but this moning I was reminded that I forgot a very important one. The most famous finnish cover band is Eläkeläiset (pensioners, senior citizens)that plays mainly cover versions of famous pop and rock hits in a fast humppa or slow jenkka style with Finnish lyrics — the original songs are barely recognizable. They also publish bootleg recordings of their own concerts. Every song title until the album "Werbung, Baby!" contained either "Humppa", "Polkka" or "Jenkka". Eläkeläiset is known amoung those who enjoy great amounts of alcohol and are not afraid to show some serious dance moves...Finnish style. Humppa is a type of music from Finland. It is related to jazz and very fast foxtrot, played two beats to a bar. Typical speed is about 250 to 280 beats per minute. Humppa is also the name of a few social dances danced to humppa music. Few hits: Heil humppa is a cover of "Kids in America" (Kim Wilde) Hullun jenkka is a cover of "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath) Humppaa suomesta is a cover of "Living in America" (The Sounds) Humppaa tai kuole! is a cover of "No Limits" (2 Unlimited) Humppamaratooni is a cover of "Whisky in the Jar" (Thin Lizzy) Humppasinfonia is a cover of "Symphony of Destruction" (Megadeth) Päivätanssit is a cover of "Domino Dancing" (Pet Shop Boys) Panojenkka is a cover of "Macarena" (Los Del Rio) official Eläkeläiset web site: http://www.humppa.com/index_eng.php |
