Energy Efficient Compact Refrigerator
- (Energy efficiency (physics)) Energy conversion efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of an energy conversion machine and the input, in energy terms. The useful output may be electric power, mechanical work, or heat.
- (Energy efficiency) The most efficient products require the least energy to generate the most output. For example, compact fluorescent light bulbs use far less energy than typical incandescent lights while producing the same brightness; therefore, they are more energy efficient.
- (Energy Efficiency) Refers to products or systems using less energy to do the same or better job than conventional products or systems. Energy efficiency saves energy, saves money on utility bills, and helps protect the environment by reducing the demand for electricity.

General Electric Building
The General Electric Building, constructed in 1929-31 to create a highly visible image for the fledgling RCA Corporation, has a significant place in the history of architecture in New York City. Designed by the firm of Cross & Cross in the Gothic mode of the Art Deco style which is both symbolic and expressive of the function of the building, this tower is a major example of Art Deco architecture. The massing and articulation of the building, shown through the use of ornament and color, is remarkable and laudable; not only does this treatment illustrate the breadth of the Art Deco, but it also gives the General Electric Building exemplary status. Moreover the building is the successful culmination of the Cross & Cross firm's efforts to develop a coherent and cohesive articulation for tall office buildings.
The Site
The General Electric Building is constructed on the northwest portion of the block bounded by 50th and 51st Streets, Park Avenue on the west, and Lexington Avenue on the east, at the southwest corner of the intersection of 51st Street and Lexington Avenue. In 1867 Frederick and Maximilian Schaefer began to assemble lots at the western end of the block, and in 1878 they constructed the F. & M. Schaefer Brewery complex.
Lots 10 and 11 on the southeast corner of the block were deeded to Saint Patrick's Cathedral in 1880. But only in this century did the block become a desirable location, a transition enabled by two major factors. In 1903 the Grant of Rights in Streets from the City of New York to the New York and Harlem River Railroad and the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Companies was recorded, a right of way that literally created Park Avenue as a grand boulevard and initiated a great development surge in this area.? Indeed, the block took on a very different tone when in 1914 the entire Schaefer tract was sold to Saint Bartholomew's Church, the third and present site of this prominent Episcopalian congregation.
Only in 1929 did the Bartholomew Building Corporation, acting for RCA, purchase what would become the General Electric Tower site. By the end of 1929 the Bartholomew Building Corporation had acquired a large parcel from Norko Realty Company and Julian Tishman & Sons, Inc., and two 51st Street lots from the Nichols Holding Co. A building permit was filed for Bartholomew on December 17, 1929.
Construction for the 560-foot high building began on May 3, 1930. Only a month before, the existing brownstones had been demolished.^ Erection of the building's skeletal steel frame and concrete floor arches continued throughout the summer.
But RCA's negotiations to move to Rockefeller Center, then in the planning stages, had begun even in late 1929 . On January 13, 1931, the formal transfer of the tower — Bartholomew Building Corporation's lease to RCA and ten days later a conveyance from Bartholomew Building Corporation and RCA to General Electric Realty and Utilities Corporation — was recorded. The tower was completed according to the designs of Cross & Cross, the following December.
The Design of the General Electric Building
In the General Electric Building all of the disparate features which characterize the tall office buildings of Cross & Cross are brought together in one splendid exercise in the Art Deco style. It was as if the designers in the "tall office building department" had been waiting both for the imprimatur of a style, the Art Deco, through which their rich imagery, the so-called proto-Deco, could coalesce and for the opportunity to translate this imagery into an appropriate built form. The symbolic signature of golfer and Mercury keystones, the roundels of Morris and Fulton, the musicians and medals, the wiverns and window hoods, anchors and dolphins, and helmeted herms, culminate here in an iconography tailored to RCA: bolts and flashes crackle from the building's surface and mysterious personifications emerge from within its verticality. Likewise the handsome brickwork, from the Revillon diaper to the parapets of the Central Hanover Bank buildings, here reach an apogee not to be repeated by Cross & Cross.
General Electric, like the City Bank Building, is a tall, eight-sided tower, articulated with piers and recessed spandrels, rising from a base which completely fills the relatively small site. The major material of the building's exterior is brick. In fact, three different colors, orange, buff, and a tawny color similar in shade to the bricks used in the fabric of Saint Bartholomew's Church, are laid in American bond with narrow joints but randomly, to create the allusion of yet an overall fourth color, a rich bronze. However, it was specified, even stressed, throughout the drawings that rounded brick be used on all corners that are not right angles.30 Second only to the brick, terra-cotta is used extensively. Where originally a tawny limestone had been specified for all the spandrels, copings, sills, trims, corbels, imp

Valentine's window clings on big glass doors
I love putting the biggest window cling on the middle center door. I do this for all the holidays. These look so bright and nice but this picture doesn't do it justice. It looks dark but it's not like this in the house. When I change window clings my cockatiels get all excited. This is one way I enjoy sharing my holidays with my pets.

Family Pyrex Redux - Butterprint - Pyrex Parking Only!
Our Pyrex gang got together again for Christmas 2011 - My sister brought hers and I brought mine to Mom's. My "Pyrex Parking Only" sign managed to go home with Sis - I'm sure it was by accident LMAO
(The history below is the same as posted with my previous Pyrex photos, fyi)
* Our family Pyrex story begins in 1958 when our Mom received the 4-piece Pyrex Cinderella Butterprint mixing bowl set as a wedding shower gift. By the late sixties there was only one piece remaining - the largest bowl, the white on turquoise 4-quart #444 bowl. It would be the only piece of family Pyrex for the next 30 years or so.
* During the seventies, eighties and nineties the old bowl was primarily used by Mom to prepare and serve her famous mashed potatoes. We referred to the bowl as 'the mashed potato bowl'.
* In 1999 the old original 444 bowl became part of a complete set again. In the late nineties we began marveling at how long the old bowl had been around. I was already using eBay and thought it would be cute to get the three other bowls and have the complete set again.
* Since 2000 we've accumulated additional Butterprint; the 4-piece non-cinderella mixing bowls, several pieces of the Bake/Serve Casserole set; and the entire refrigerator set. I've gone outside the Butterprint pattern twice for promotional Cinderella bowls; the 1959 'Golden Scroll' Chip and Dip set, and the green Merry Christmas and Happy New Year #443 bowl.
* We don't really 'collect' Pyrex, we just sort of 'accumulate' it. We only acquire it to use it, and use it we do, including the one that started it all, that original #444 that's been in the family since 1958, and is still serving up Mom's famous mashed potatoes - now to a fourth generation!!!

Williamsburgh Houses
Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States of America
A collaborative project of the Federal Public Works Administration and the newly established New York City Housing Authority, the Williamsburg Houses are notable as one of the earliest housing developments in the United States to reflect the ideas of the modern movement in architecture. In the 1920s Williamsburg was one of the most densely populated sections of Brooklyn and nearly six hundred, mostly frame, structures were demolished to create the 23.3 acre site. Proposed in 1934, this residential complex was skillfully designed by the Williamsburg Associated Architects during 1935 and most units were occupied by 1938.
The partnership included Richmond H. Shreve, of Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the architects of the Empire State Building, and William Lescaze, the Swiss-born architect who helped introduce the “International” style on the eastern seaboard. Lescaze was responsible for the design, which includes twenty 4-story structures on four “super” blocks turned at 15 degree angles to the street grid. Oriented to the sun and prevailing winds, this unusual layout produced a series of large and small courts, many of which flow into a large public space at the center of each block. A light-colored palette distinguishes the facades, executed in tan brick and exposed concrete.
Among the most prominent features are the entrances, marked by blue tile and projecting stainless steel canopies, and the handsome streamlined storefronts. The complex was widely discussed by contemporary critics and more than 25,000 New Yorkers applied for 1,622 apartments. During the mid-1990s, the buildings underwent an extensive restoration which included the replacement of all exterior materials. Sponsored by the Housing Authority, in consultation with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, these alterations were remarkably sensitive and in the 4th edition of the AIA Guide to New York City the “revivified” complex was called “the best public housing project ever built in New York.”
DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS
Housing the Masses
From the rowhouse to the apartment building, New York City has been a laboratory for innovative housing. Beginning after the Civil War, apartments, variously known as French Flats and tenements, were built to house the city’s surging population. Immigrants, for the most part, crowded into unregulated tenements, structures that maximized profits for developers while providing few amenities that we take for granted today, such as light, air, and private bathrooms.
Despite government efforts to legislate minimum standards in 1867 and 1879, initially private individuals took the most significant steps to make decent housing affordable to all. Several pioneering examples were located close to the Brooklyn waterfront, including the Home and Tower Buildings (William Field and Son, 1876-78), the Astral Apartments (Lamb & Rich, 1885-87) and Riverside (William Field and Son, 1890). The later complex surrounded a large tree-shaded courtyard incorporating a music pavilion and areas for drying laundry. Despite these, and a few innovative Manhattan developments, the majority of New Yorkers continued to live in substandard conditions.
The passage of the New Tenement Law in 1901 improved the situation, requiring that multiple dwellings be built on significantly larger lots, with fire escapes and separate “privies” for each family. After World War I, the garden apartment came into vogue. While most were built for the middle class, especially in Jackson Heights, a significant group were sponsored by unions and cooperative organizations that wished to provide members with inexpensive apartments. Significant examples include the Amalgamated Houses (Springsteen & Goldhammer, 1930) on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and the “Coops” built in the Bronx by the United Workers Cooperative Association (Springsteen & Goldhammer, 1925-27; Herman Jessor, 1927-29).
The first significant act of government intervention occurred in 1926 with the passage of the New York State Housing Law. Promoted by Governor Alfred E. Smith to encourage construction through the formation of local authorities that would sell bonds or seek federal funds, it had little impact until 1934 when the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) was established. The authority’s first project, aptly called the First Houses (Frederick L. Ackerman, 1934-36), was located in Manhattan’s East Village. Begun as a rehabilitation program involving the demolition of every third structure, due to structural problems the eight brick buildings were entirely rebuilt.
Throughout the early Depression, government-subsidized housing remained a controversial issue. Consequently, it was first promoted as worker relief, organized to create jobs but not compete with the commercial market. The first federal agency to involve itself with housing was the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) which was created in 19
