1. Poor headlines and solutions Headline: Well waters dark side Headline: Its like coming home Headline: Killing time as life came to an end 2. Article improved by list Please note the leon fleisher is not very representative of the content, and the list format makes that even more obvious. Before: CLASSICAL NOTES: Autumn offerings famously follow the Philadelphians Just as I began to write this column, I received an e-mail from fabulous flutist Jan Vinci, who teaches at Skidmore saying she has a new CD leon fleisher being released by Albany Records: Global Flute leon fleisher Premieres and Rare Gems (Albany Records), available at Amazon.com, FluteWorld.com, and on iTunes. I havent yet heard the recording, but based on what Ive heard Jan play in the past, it will be well worth your listening time. You can read about her at www.janvinci.com, and you can hear her perform live at Skidmore on Nov. 9, as a guest performer in a concert featuring flutist Gary Schocker. Last month in this column, I mentioned a new release I |hadnt yet heard by pianist Natlaie Zhu. Her husband, Philadelphia Orchestra violist Che-Hung Chen, delivered her CD to me just before the close of the orchestras summer residency here, so Ive now had the privilege of hearing her first solo recording, Images. The CD includes the original piano version of Mussorgskys Pictures at maturantske obleke Exhibition, sending me back to my textbooks yet again to learn about when and how that composers work was transformed into one of the publics favorite orchestral works. After hearing Zhus recording, I marvel that Ravel thought it necessary to rework the piece for orchestra. Zhus playing beautifully tells the story of the paintings by Mussorgskys friend, Viktor Hartmann, with a palette of pianistic colors, and she shows a musical understanding beyond her years. Im always fascinated when tiger attack recordings of artists performing within my memory range of their live performances in this region, or hearing two different artists or ensembles perform the same work. Its like a hearing test: what was different? How was it different? Which did I like better, and why? A recent Deutsche Gammophon recording of Brahms String Quartets brought this issue to mind. Pianist Leon Fleisher gives a definitive performance of Brahms Piano Quintet with the Emerson Quartet brian wilson this CD - recording within months of his once again losing use of his right hand due to focal dystonia. And just a month ago, pianist Emanuel Ax played this same Brahms masterpiece with Chantal Juillet, Gautier and Renaud Capucon, and Che-Hung Chen for the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival. I wish I had a recording of that magnificent thank you note from santa so I could compare the two. Then again, a well-known violinist leon fleisher the Philadelphia Orchestra recently advised me (nicely) that I should never compare a recording to a live performance, and I think hes probably correct. Once youve listened to a recording several times, its very difficult not to subconsciously impose that mind-set of music to what you hear being played live in a music hall. Albany Symphony Orchestra will offer sever all opportunities for me to test my comparative listening skills this season, with David Alan Miller conducting several works that Ive reviewed recently in performances by other ensembles. ASOs Oct. 27 program at the Palace Theatre in Troy will feature erhu soloist Betti Xsang playing the achingly beautiful Butterfly Lovers Concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao. Musical premieres are refreshing, and challenging, in that listeners have nothing with which to compare the music heard. Ive been listening this week to a recording of Behzad Ranjbarans Cello Concerto, played by Paul Tobias with JoAnn Falletta and the Virginia Symphonic Orchestra on a CD titled The American Cello (Albany Records). SPACs 2005 Composer-in-Residence and a former Yaddo resident, Ranjbaran brought his family back to Saratoga during the final week of the Philadelphians stay here this summer, while working on a piano concerto to be hadrian s wall by Jean-Yves Thibaudet with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the spring. Ranjbaran was shadowed closely by his son, Armand, who now is a freshman composition major at Juilliard, where his father teaches. Armand himself has already earned awards for his music, including a summer of study last year at Tanglewood. (Ive already asked him to write a cello concerto for my daughter to perform, but it turns out we have to stand in line&) will feature young, extraordinarily talented members of the Ensemble ACJW (Academy, Carnegie, Juilliard and Weill), who will be in residence at Skidmore in both October and February. The first performance of Carnegie Premieres at Skidmore will include Carnegie Hall-commissioned works by composers Bright Sheng and David Bruce. The free performance by Ensemble ACJW will be presented in leon fleisher Filene Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Friday, pressradioamerica.blogspot.com 5. Is Ramona, as wendy pepper claimed, a modern-day VanGogh? And did she have to GO?? Like a fine work of art, sometimes Reality Shows leave us with more questions than answers. Because such complex questions are easier to answer when we all put our heads together, I give you a new, interactive feature: Vapid Culture’s (first ever) Burning Question of the Week! Question: Is the object on the left& a. A vacuum covered in white crap; or b. A priceless art sculpture? Answer: Umm& Tomato, Tomahhto? As a (semi-closeted) Reality TV junkie who used to work in The Industry, as they call it in LA-La land, Ive often contemplated the ethics of a practice utilized by reality-show producers. I call it The Omorosa Law of Reality TV. As you may or may not know, at the end of every reality show theres a disclaimer that says something to the effect of The final decisions are based on wendy pepper judges opinions; however, the producers are given the final say. This allows them to keep a marginally-qualified but highly entertaining contestant on the air, because evil &/or crazy characters=high ratings. Objectionable as it may be in terms of justice, I do believe this law is for the greater good. (Oh come on, you know you missed Omorosa after she got fired!!) I mean, would Project Runway have gotten renewed sans Wendy Pepper? Every show needs a villain; its Screen Writing 101! Enter Ramona on HGTVs Design Star. As soon as I saw her credits she is a found objects artist I figured she had been cast as the villain who would stay on for a while despite her obvious inferiority like Jade in cycle 5 of Top Model. As the show progressed, Ramonas craziness became more apparent. Naturally, I was grateful for the Omorosa clause, as I figured that come hell or high water, the powers that be would find a way to keep her on the show and keep the laughs coming. Now I know what people mean when they call a nutty person a character; I mean, a show, scripted or not, is nothing without characters, and Ramona made the episode, IMHO. Next, Ramona tells everyone that she wants to do a beautiful mural in the room that she and a few others are designing. As a designer myself, Im imagining all of the murals that Ive had to paint over while staging a house for sale and thinking STOP HER!! Murals are rarely a good thing in a space that needs to be liked by, say, more than two people. A peice of wall-art is referred to as a canvas for a reason it belongs ON CANVAS, not on walls!! Although some of the designers tried to make her understand this, they ended up giving into her, which was when I figured that they knew something we viewers didnt: Ramona was going to march to the beat of her own drummer (a beat that no one else could make sense of, to be sure.) This projection of mine ended up being true in ways I could never have forcasted!! Now, the designers were given a mere 24 hours to design the space (which was the NYC townhouse where theyre living). Knowing from personal experience that time management is NOT a designers strong suit, I knew theyd be waaay behind schedule by the time they actually started putting the wendy pepper together. mythbusters kari Dumpster Diving" align="left" height="106" hspace="20" vspace="20" wendy pepper /> Now, usually time-crunch panic has a way of making people focus on the job at hand, but not Ramona!! Instead of helping with the room, theres Ramona, out dumpster diving. She emerges with a box on her head, a vacuum in hand and some other undecipherable crap. We hear her say something like I dont india vs australia the word trash, because it implies that things can no longer be of use. Be afraid. Be very afraid!! We see her teammates frantically painting the boxing days (of course they have to do this ASAP, because paint has to dry). And then we see Ramona& finger-painting her vacuum with plaster!! To be fair, she says shes making a sculpture. A sculpture that, apparently, will be so beautiful that its more important than mere wall-painting. Silly moi. As they start to deduce the fact that Ramonas wendy pepper big on prioritizing, the other designers inquire about her plans for the mural. Or, more likely, theyre terrified of what shell litter the walls with. So she sketches two potential themes. Now earlier, when everyone started commenting on how gorgeous fellow designer Temple is, it came out that Temple was Miss Utah. To her credit, she seemed somewhat embarrassed by this admission (sort of like when I admit to having been a cheerleader& yikes). Ramona is so excited by this embarrassing factoid that she wants to do a mural of Miss Utah I kid you not, thats what she presents as option #1. Option #2 is likened to a childs drawing, which is pretty hideous too. Given the choices, everyone (including Miss Utah herself) votes for option 2; now they musnt witness Ramonas interpretation of the former. its a wonderful life hspace="20" vspace="20" width="165" /> Next thing we know, times up and& ewww- yep, thats a childs drawing all right a childs drawing of MISS UTAH!! I thought that idea got voted down?! Apparently everyone else did too, judging by their faces at the voting panel when the judges inquired about this, Ramona cloverfield some sort of doublespeak to explain how she arrived at her wendy pepper to do Miss Utah despite the consensus that she NOT do it& Apparently Ramona lives on a planet where no means yes or maybe, as Bill Clinton taught us during Lewinsky-gate, wendy pepper depends on what your interpretation of is is. When asked to explain herself, Ramona says that no one on the show is advanced enough to understand her work by likening herself to a modern day Van Gogh (people thought Van Goghs work was ugly too back then). So when it came time to decide who gets the boot, I was so enthralled by all of Miss Monas kookiness that I was thanking God for the Omorosa Law. Surely, despite all of Ramonas detriments, the Omorosa Law would prevail and TPTB would find a reason, any reason, to get rid of someone else (like Donna, that annoying Designer/Flight Attendant from Texas!) Sure enough, during the judging, Design Stars host, Mr. (creepy) wendy pepper called out Donna wendy pepper started harping on her horrific budgeting skills. The guys that did the patio lost A WHOLE DAY because she had taken off without giving them money for materials!! And her room was totally botched, as Donna wendy pepper on positioning the couch so that it blocked the rooms traffic flow!! Surely he was making a case for why Donnas contribution was more devastating than Ramonas!! Surely he was going to honor The Omorosa Law!! Now well be forced to endure an entire season without the true Design Star!! They just killed off their most colorful character!! But fear not, fellow character-lovers. wendy pepper set us up for the P.R. Ages (Post Ramona, of course.) In her videotaped Last Will and Testament/Exit Interview, Ramona nominated contestant Tym to fill her shoes as the new Ramona. However, as of Episode 3, it looks like Donnas the one to watch& and I think the only reason shes lasted this long is The you-know-what. The Omorosa Law is back in force! Hallelujah!! Vapidly, Jenna |

Adam with Peter King, Ken Burns, David Alan Grier - July 11, 2007 CALL ADAM NOW! 6:01AM – DEAD BUT NOT GONE Thinking about the days of yore, Adam, Danny, and Teresa compare the differences in life styles during the last few wars versus today. One major thing Danny noticed was that after his sister-in-law died, she continued to receive mail. Same thing happened to Adam’s mother-in-law with coming up for jury duty about a month after she died. Teresa’s black stepfather however takes the cake – when he died, his death certificate somehow listed him as white. 6:17AM – PETER KING When Adam discovered that corn isn’t really that nutritious, his world rocked a little as it’s a favorite food of his. Of course, while explaining this to Angie in the kitchen during the break, Angie once again informs him that she doesn’t like the taste of corn. In fact, decides Adam, Angie actually may not like any food at all. â€SAnyone who doesn’t like corn is un-American…” agrees phoner Peter tamara witmer His new weight loss though has little to do with corn and more to do with exercise and a healthy diet. Given his job though, he often finds himself in his hotel room at 3AM, hungry, and faced only with the choice of the vending machine of packaged snacks down the hall. Adam wants to know about the lack of an NFL team in LA and the rumor that part of the reason is that owners use the threat of moving their team to LA as a lever to get what they want. While it’s a decent theory, Peter explains that to build something in Los Angeles for tamara witmer it would cost somewhere in the ballpark of $1 billion. Another option that’s being encouraged is for the teams across the country to give up one game a year and tamara witmer play it in LA, but this still doesn’t give any Angelinos the home team they want. Peter and Adam also chat a little about the revenue sharing tactics of MLB and NHL, the history of the process, and tiger attack san francisco some of the players happen to have done with tamara witmer extra funds. 6:48AM – TAMING YOUR FAT ASS Adam’s struck by the simplicity of your traditional weight loss plan, running and watching what you eat. T admits that she’s run the gamut from a 2 all the way up to a 14. When she was a writer on Win Ben Stein’s Money, she was at her largest – but as the only girl on an all male staff, between the doughnuts, Red Vines, and other bad snacks they tossed at the staff, it’s not a big mystery as to why T ballooned. The nut of the month club is a temptation for Adam. tamara witmer of course July’s nut is a battered beer nut – as if nuts needed anything more. â€SIt’s the same team that came up with the idea of deep-frying a Snickers bar!” decides Adam. Another point for Adam is that his wife doesn’t seem to be helping, as she just left them on the counter when his assistant Jay brought them up and left them on the counter. And now I’m hiding my nuts, explains Adam, so he’ll have some left over after his photoshoot. In fact, they’re hiding about three feet away in a place she’ll never look – the oven. 7:10AM – TERESA REPORTS THE NEWS T reports all the news worth hearing. 7:35AM – KEN BURNS AND THE WAR Emmy-Award winning film documentarian Ken Burns is in the studio, but Adam’s immediately struck by his boyish face and the fact that despite the familiarity of his name, he’d tamara witmer really seen Ken’s face. Ken’s new documentary about World War II is a favorite topic of Adam’s. To seize upon the experience of being in that war, Ken and his team took four geographically distinct towns, found as many veterans as they could and followed them through their lives during the war. Given his depth and breadth of knowledge, Adam wonders that if Ken had an eligible son back in 1938 or so, what branch would he want him to go behindtourhot.blogspot.com Given the dangers of the job and the prospect of being stranded in the middle an oil slick, floating in the middle of the ocean, Ken suggests it might be the Navy or Merchant Marines. 7:53AM – KEN EXPLAINS AN UNBIASED AND PERSONAL APPROACH Immersed in the topic for 6 years, Ken and his crew attempted to tell the story of the war in an unbiased manner. However, in contrast to the current scott schwartz witmer in Iraq, Ken believes that the second World War was able to garner the support of the population to become one of the â€Ügood’ wars. liliana mumy title='Ken Burns'> Some of the best segments of this documentary though involve the very personal stories of the individuals profiled in the film. Ken recounts a story about one of the interviewees tending to a German soldier’s battle wounds on the field who revealed to him in perfect German the detailed plans of Hitler to take over the United States territories. 8:12AM – THE HOLOCAUST: MECHANIZED MURDER Ken explains that while screening the film, it came across that the most widely publicized portion of World War II is of course the Holocaust, as when murder becomes industrialized, it’s hard not to notice. Adam agrees, that for Germany, the Holocaust seemed almost like an extra side project in the middle of a massive operation – both appalling and strategically bizarre. What’s the connection between baseball, jazz, and war Teresa wants to know. â€SI think I’ve made the same film over and over again,” decides Ken. His films seem to try to discover who we are as a people, with the only difference being the details of the story. 8:32AM – MORALITY IN HIROSHIMA Before the break, Adam asked a very introspective question: In retrospect, what are your feelings about the Hiroshima bombings? Ken explains, â€SWar is all about a terrible arithmetic,” and as a result of Hiroshima the war ended very quickly, but was it worth the human cost? At the end of the day, tamara witmer innocent civilians were killed to save perhaps 7 or 8 million other people around the world – but there will always be a question about the morality of the action, as even the pilots were reminded of the value of the trade-off. Caller Nate asks Ken about the reactions to the film at the European Cannes Film Festival. It seems that regardless of the American perspective, as a window into the human experience, it had the same moving effect. 8:52AM – DAVID ALAN GRIER DAG’s a little worked up, as tamara witmer Burns stayed on late and made DAG wait in the green room for a bit. He also notices Teresa’s special glow of being in love, composing a little ditty on the spot to commemorate the moment. tamara witmer decides it’s time to come clean about their date then, and much of it revolves around the over thinking and instant judgment of the first couple dates. 9:07AM – DAG TERRORIZES TERESA Adam plays a classic Crank Yankers call with a freestyling DAG, tamara witmer then DAG admits to being seriously frightened on his date with T. And now that T’s got her man, DAG notices some good changes in her. As promised before the break, Adam, T and Danny also get a chance to talk to DAG’s â€SPeanut”, hired to be the receptionist and answer phones, but just ill-prepared for the job. 9:33AM – TERESA RECAPS THE NEWS Teresa recaps the news. 9:56AM – ADAM WRAPS UP THE SHOW |
