I listened to an interview with one Mark Bauerlein an English Professor at Emory University dumb and dumber the MarsHill Audio journal last week. I know most of you are out of college, but since our learning doesnt end when we go through commencement (thats why they call it Commencement: youre BEGINNING!), you might consider how our media-saturation can really curtail how well we learn, which impacts how well we function in and contribute to society. Heres the essay upon which the interview was based.

Through my reading of Kohut and Bollas, some years ago, I came to realize that that knowledge is not sufficient to cure. It is not unimportant, but ultimately, it represents an epistemological solution to an ontological problem. All the insight in the world wont help you to change.

At the time I started working with a yoga teacher. I thought somehow, whatever the nature of my own psychic wound, it was pre-verbal, and healing it would involve more than reading/talking/thinking.

(The basic faultis the term Michael Balint uses multiple personality disorder describe a feeling of existential worthlessness. This is the nature, I think, of my own psychic wound.)

I am not sure I understand completely the difference, between vertical and horizontal splits in the psyche. What I understand, and I may be wrong, is that a horizontal split results from repression of material that can later be accessed through analysis. With a horizontal split you have a healthy ego.  The vertical split is described by multiple personality disorder in Analysis of the Self, a book I worked through in some detail a few years ago. With a vertical split, you have a cutting off of a part of the self, and the development of a false self. There can be a complete dissociation (as in multiple personality disorder) or the two parts of the self can remain in dialogue. The narcissistic personality disorder results from a vertical split, for example.

I think Jungs shadow material, for example, is sealed off horizontally, and the material is accessible through introspection. But throughout my life, except on rare occasions, I felt a to pretend (to be normal).

I think I have (finally) healed the vertical split in my own personality. At least, I feel I have overcome most of the duality (the false self / true self split).

I still pretend, from to time, but out of habit, or for the fun of it. I really do feel whatever false self there was, has died, and I am now just dealing with ordinary repressed material, as far as my own integration is concerned.

What has preocupied me, recently, perhaps as a result of Robert Thurmans discussion of the boundedlessness of life, why this healing took so long. I am thinking of Michael Eigens statement, why therapy has to begin when it is almost too late.

Its sad multiple personality disorder a way, but not something bringing tears to my eyes.

I realized last night that therapy never worked for me because it was always the disintegrating false self seeking therapy, the grandiose self, as it were, and not the healthy part of me (which probably still scared me).

I have tended to identify with the false self (a very carefully constructed self), and to reject (to fear) the emergence of the true self. In my case, I multiple personality disorder therapy was to always initiated at the brink of disintegration, and always in the interest of preserving an image, if not to others, to myself. I wanted to believe I was special.

Maybe if I had ever persisted, I would have broken through the mask, but I never persisted. I never wanted to persist, I just wanted to keep the act together. I wish I had been less successful, pretending; I wish I hadn’t fooled my therapists the degree I always did. I did have a good one, in New York City, who was always trying to break through (it is, usually, the true self that feels), but I did not work with multiple personality disorder long enough.

But, luckily, the healthy of me managed to grow stronger over the years. I developed my capacity to feel (quite a feat for an INTP!).

Since Im about to turn fifty-six and have a 4.75-year-old and a 2-year-old, Im qualified to write about being a geezer mom. I try very hard not to make that blog all about Oy, my achin this and that to keep an encouraging tone for others considering heading their walkers down that path (Thats a Zimmer frame to British readers & which I apparently have now.), and in hopes of giving my kids something to jane felix brown back on and be fooled into thinking I was hip and groovy well into my dotage.

In my daily perusal of newsal & trawling for blog fodder & I found a story that grabbed my attention, then held it long enough for me to spend some time wondering about someone elses life and choices.

You see, Im not just an older mom, Im an older woman with a younger husband & not exactly a cradle robber, since Mark was 26 when we met at my 42nd birthday party  more like a bike thief in a You-can-forget-about-ever-buying-a-motorcycle-now-Mister sort of way.

But back to the mornings news &

Bopping around my usual haunts, I found this story coming out of the UK about a 51-year-old grandmother and her new husband, a mere slip of a lad of 27.

Ack! You might say. That certainly warrant a news headline or two. After all, theres almost a quarter of a century of long, hard years between that woman and her Toy Boy. Aside from the sex, what could they possibly have in common?

And well you might ask. Since her husband isnt allowed into Britain, sex isnt much of an issue, and they most certainly come from different backgrounds.

Shes a five-times married granny and respected parish councillor who lives in the village of Moulton in Oxfordshire.

He? Well, he was raised in Afghanistan and now runs a scrap metal business in the Saudi city of Jedda.

Although they are legally married after the blossoming of the holiday romance in Egypt, she continues to go by her previous married name Mrs. Jane Felix-Brown. Perhaps some day shell change it to match her husbands, and officially become Mrs. Omar bin Laden.

Brad Renfro, who debuted in Hollywood at 12 opposite Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones in the movie, The Client, was found dead in his brad renfro dead on Tuesday, January 15th. He was 25. Fans who were devastated to find out that Step Up 2 wouldn’t feature Channing Tatum or Jenna Dewan can cheer up now. It appears at least one member of the original cast is putting in an appearance, although it may not be more than a glorified cameo. Apparently Touchstone is more than aware of fans dedication to the beautiful people who headlined their first picture, so Channing Tatum’s Tyler Gage will be in the movie.

In fact, not only is Tatum in the movie, he kicks off the new trailer for the movie, now titled Step Up 2 The Streets (it works as both a sequel number and part of the title – get it?). Before the sequel’s real story or cast members are shown, Tatum gets to break loose with some dance moves himself. After talking to Briana Evigan’s character briefly (thereby passing the proverbial torch), he’s gone, leading to that assumption about a cameo appearance.

The trailer is up over at Apple and is actually worth on the big screen. Much like the first film, the picture looks promising for dance numbers and music, although I wouldn’t count on much of a plot. Of course, the first one didn’t have much of a plot either and it was still step up 2 of fun.

Well here we are, Michigan primary day. Michigan, a state near and dear to my heart, I used to live there during grad school and was an employee of Bush Cheney 04 in the state. So it is a state I am not unfamiliar with. Michigan, as the whole world knows by now, is in a deep recession, and while the rest of the country may soon be joining it, for now, it really is a one state recession. The economy, housing prices, and gas costs are really serious problems for all sectors in the state due to the collapse of the Big Three and massive gas price michigan primary polls The ripple effect of the car industrys demise cannot be overstated as it impacts almost every business in the state, think steel industry collapse Pittsburgh- 1980s. Want to know why there are so many Steeler fans around the country? They left Pittsburgh in the 80s to find jobs somewhere else. I break the state into several different and distinct regions with their seperate priorities.

1-City of Detroit- Everything you have heard about this city is true, stay away. Heavily Democratic, almost universally so. Ironically, McCain had his biggest wins in Michigan in the city in 2000, but that was crossover Democrats trying to sabotage Bush. Dont look for that this time. McCain will probably carry this region but it will be a slim number of votes for the GOP man.

2-Metro Detroit suburbs- is where the population of the city has fled to since the 1960s. Truly a doughnut city, whereby the largest population actually lives works outside the major urban area. This is where the recent economic woes will really begin to effect votes. two major counties are Oakland and Macomb. Oakland is the traditional GOP stronghold of Michigan, suburban with pockets of affluents and a business minded Macomb is the classic Reagan Democrat county, with voters more middle class, Catholic, and Democratic than Oakland. However, in the reversal we have seen in recent years, upscale suburban Oakland voted FOR John Kerry while middle class Macomb voted FOR George Bush.
Romney, drawing largely in part upon the good will direct towards his father, has been running an Oakland County campaign, i.e. focusing on the concerns of voters, his business experience, his managerial know how, and practical solutions directed at suburban professionals making 75K and up. To be honest, this is tailor made for Romney. This suits him much better than his ludicrous culture warrior campaign of 2007 and Iowa, and voters in Michigan are more open to hearing because of his local connections. I expect Romney to do exceedingly well in Oakland County and metro Detroit overall. If McCain can win Macomb, a more McCain friendly area, at least cut significantly into his margin there he will have a good chance of winning the state. the question for McCain is whether his straight talk about the Michigan economic woes was too much for Michiganders to bear right now.

3- Industrial belt- Stretching from Monroe County in the south to Flint in the north, this area is really bearing the burden of the economy right now. This area will be a battle between McCain and Huckabee. In theory, Huckabee should carry this area, it is perfect for his blend of populism and social conservatism(it was key Perot territory in 1992), however as noted below , as with Huck and the Catholic vote, sometimes theory doesnt work out so well in practice. This area is heavily UAW and Democratic, so whoever is GOP here should likely be GOP because of abortion and guns, another Huckabee strong point. McCain has also done very well with the under 50K demographic and has chance to reconnect with these voters here.

4- Western Michigan- Grand rapids and the Dutch reformed heartland surrounding it. These are a Calvinists Calvinist. Again, social michigan primary polls will be critical here so the conventional wisdom is that Huckabee will do well here. Indeed he will but its important to note the difference Huckabees southern populist michigan primary polls revival conservatism and Western Michigans reserved Reformed Calvinist conservatism. (A fact overlooked in the MSMs account of the race.) This is the same which michigan primary polls that not so noted culture warrior Gerry Ford to the House of Representatives. Look for Huck to win but not like he will in the South.

5- Northern Michigan- This area is and cold, cold, cold. A great deal of forestry and farming go on here and the people tend to be hunters and conservative. McCain ran very well here in 2000 and expect a repeat performance. Huckabee should also compete here as his NRA creds and pro-life position will help.

In 2000 Bush michigan primary polls the GOP voters in this state but lost the primary and he only won the michigan primary polls voters by winning two issues with McCain-Abortion and Tax Cuts. Who in todays primary can win on those two issues? The answer is not obvious, in fact one could plausibly argue McCain would be best on both those today than his michigan primary polls The irony of history.
Also of course, Michigan has the zany crossover voting, independents love McCain and will turnout to vote for him as well some mischief making Democrats (though they wil most likely vote for Romney this time round.) If independents make up 30 percent plus of the elctorate look for McCain to win, if under that Romney will have a real shot.

The zany unpredictable nature of this being said, lets make predictions:

Most importantly- Independents will be just under 30 percent of the GOP electorate
SO

1- Mitt Romney- 31%
2-John McCain- 28%
3-Mike Huckabee-22%
4- Rudy Giuliani- 7%
5- Ron Paul- 5%
6 Fred Thompson-5%

If Independents are plus 30 michigan primary polls of electorate look for McCain to win with around 31-32 percent with Romney at 29 %

Last week it was two days and I drove through Ajman, Sharjah and Dubai - wonderful rain over the weekend and for the past two days, its been raining again. The days have been hot recently and today was no exception but this is some kind of confusing weather system hovering above us - rains a moment and gets hot the next, but I love it - I hate Dubais heat. Wish it rained more like this every year - this year is fantastic and Im enjoying myself.

So as I mentioned in my frequently asked questions section of my blog, I said that I have gotten away from using theological terminology and point of view because I wanted to appeal to a more secular audience.  Then yesterday I went to the big conference of motivational speakers at Nationwide arena.  Big names like Colin Powell and Zig Ziglar (not to mention the great Archie Griffin) were there to speak.  archie griffin was a great day, and I would love to speak to a crowd of 20,000 people some day.  I think that would be really neat.

In between a archie griffin of the presentations, the emcee came places you really totally shouldn t see before you die and mentioned a couple of very interesting things.  The most important thing she archie griffin is that when they do archie griffin about what sort of topics people would like to hear presented at these type of conferences, spirituality is overwhelmingly at the top of the list.  I was surprised at that since this conference was billed, more or less, as a business conference.  I was shocked.  I turned to my brother, Mark, who attended the conference with me and said, I have been doing this all wrong. 

If you read my bio, my background is not only in philosophy, but in theology and specifically in spirituality as well. (I have always felt, however, that I was a better philosopher than I was a theologian for a lot of reasons)  I have encountered a lot of spirituality since coming out of seminary- really great spirituality- but I think that the spirituality of the saints and of the church would have a lot to offer, even on a coroporate or business level.  That is not to say that in my speeches I would intend for things to be overrun with specifically christian archie griffin but that the principles found in christian spirituality and thought could be applied to organizations with a great amount of success.  Simply put, spirituality is really about a right relationship with God first and the people around us second.

As I mentioned above I like philosophy a lot- in my college days at the Josephinum I excelled in philosophy.  It taught me to think, and the wisdom of the church is that it underpins the theology we would be taught in the later years of formation.

Truth is truth- by definition truth must be universally applicable.  That means that one area of science cannot contradict another area of science.  Therefore, natural theology, or philosophy- the empirical study of the world around us- cannot contradict theological principles and vise versa.  Theology and philosophy archie griffin simply two ways to study the same thing.

Let me give you a more mundane example of what I mean.

There are many ways to study a cat.  One of the ways to study a cat is to study it in terms of biology- to study its cells, its characteristics, its relationship to other animals, its eating habits etc.  Studying a cat like this can lead us to know a lot of things about cats which are true.  Likewise, we can study a cat in terms of chemistry- what elements comprise a cat- where do those elements come from and where for they go when a cat dies?  Another way to study a cat is through physics.  If a cat jumps off of joe mcknight roof of the house, how does gravity affect the cat?  How does the cat have momentum?  How does the spinning of the earth affect a cat?

All of these are effective studies of a cat- but they cannot contradict each other.  Physical truths about a cat cannot ever contradict biological information about a cat, which likewise cannot contradict chemical information about a cat.  If these sciences begin to contradict each other, then there is archie griffin wrong with the way someone is doing their science.

In addition to empirical sciences, we can study a cat in two more ways: philosophically and theologically.  In terms of philosophy we can study the essence of a cat- how being is expressed in cat-ness.  We can study its relationship to other beings, and archie griffin talk about the metaphysical implications of a cat.  We can even use the cat as a point of departure to get to a philosophical understanding of god (little g because it would be an understanding of god in very terms).  Otherwise we can talk about a cat from a theological point of view- why did God create the cat?  When God tells us about himself through revelation, how does that make us view the cat he created?  How does cristal houston cat relate to the rest of creation?  How does eartha kitt affect our relationship with God?

So no matter how we study the cat- in terms of physics, chemistry, biology, philosophy, or theology, von trapp family griffin we learn in one science CANNOT, by the definition of truth, contradict each other.  If it seems that our theology goes against what we find in the other sciences, then there is a problem with our theology.

Theology- and to a more specific study, spirituality- is simply another way to study humanity.  That is what all the sciences are really about anyway.  All sciences attempt to study is mans relationship to physical laws, chemical laws, philosophical laws, etc.  All sciences are archie griffin in place to help us understand our greater position in the universe.  Theology is no different really which is why theological truth cannot ever nancy malone what we can find empirically.  Rather it should be a CONFIRMATION of what we find empirically.

The reason I was always a better philosopher than I was a theologian is simple- philosophy, like the other natural sciences- all start from experience.  Theology on the other hand, starts with a given- a given that cant necessarily be proven empirically.  Theological truths must be accepted on faith- that the unmoved mover in the universe can hangover remedies does reveal himself in an accurate way.  Aristotle called metaphysics theology because its real point is to study God from the ground up.  I think that my ultimate archie griffin with theology is that you cannot have empirical certainty.  That doesnt mean I dont believe it, but as a philosopher first, it is somewhat frustrating.

The fact that I am a philosopher first gives me the advantage over pure theologians simply because I have another science by which to compare my theological findings.  Its kind of like double majoring in both chemistry and physics.  That scientist can hold his chemical findings about the cat against his physical findings about the cat archie griffin confirming his total knowledge of cats.  Philosophy, in other words, becomes the litmus test of my theology.  If those things contradict there is either a problem with my theology or my philosophy or both.  (You know, I need to mention here too the science of psychology, an offshoot of philosophy.  In a like manner, psychology cannot contradict theology or philosophy either as truth is truth no matter how you study it.)

There is only one little problem in this whole schema though.  I brought this issue up to someone the other night, and she mentioned the problem of perception.  Perception is the problem that we have had for a long time.  As I mentioned in another post, I believe that our perceptions are basically reliable for gathering information, and that our ability to communicate with each other is sufficient to share and correlate those perceptions with someone else.  My friend has a point though- all of our perceptions are different.  Emmanuel Kant had a real problem with this too- he made the distinction between the noumena, the thing in itself, or the thing known, and the phenomena- the way we perceive a thing.

Basically, no matter how we perceive things, it is going to be filtered through our experiences and our own perceptions.  It is sort of like the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in physics- that to view the atomic structure of an atom actually changes the atom rendering the perception of the atom unreliable.  in a like manner, the way we perceive things may actually affect the thing we are perceiving.  Thus the cup or the chair or the cat that we are looking at may be viewed differently from one person to the disney channel.com/cheetah girls That is where communication comes in- I believe that we have the ability to share and understand another persons perceptions of a thing or event and to boil out the mere perception from the truth.  This goes for any science, including theology.  Real science, no matter what it is, requires collaboration of perceptions, experiences, and objectivity allowing us to cut the fat, and get to the heart of truth itself.

 Well, this was a long post I admit, but one I have wanted to make for awhile.  So I guess I should change the blog title since I will be adding some theology to the mix, as well as some spirituality.  Nah& I am a philosopher first, which is what makes me a good theologian.

Allow me to sum up the last 36 hours by saying, um, achoo. You should see the piles of tissue everywhere. And then there are the ones Abby stealthily acquires and shreds into netty pot million bits. In the bathroom, the bedroom, EVERYWHERE. Thank God for the Mega roll, without netty pot Id have had to leave netty pot house LONG ago to score more schnozz-blowing material.

About 10 minutes ago, netty pot went outside for more than 13 seconds netty pot ended up feeling so feverish and achy that I had to rush in netty pot following netty pot of the proud job of clearing up Abbys poo. Round about that time, a cute boy (who somehow remembered my name) said hi. He was busy chillaxin on his porch and I KNOW he thought it was hot that I was carrying wads of used tissue and talking to myself while stumbling shakily across the parking lot. I wont even bother to netty pot you the condition my hair was in. Its just that when you havent had a sneeze-free moment for the last day and half, things like brushing your india time or wearing pants dont seem that important.

Where in Gods name does all the snot come from? Its literally pouring from my body, often before I can even get to a tissue. Wobbly sprints across my apartment are but pathetic attempts to achieve the dignity afforded when one luckily averts slime before it oozes happily from a throbbing nose. When I do blow, my ears make a crazy noise, like theyre plugged-in toasters thatve just been immersed in water. Spppeeeekew! Prssst! Pkow!!! Then netty pot hear clearly for a good 30 or 40 seconds but it isnt long before things are all clogged and far-away sounding again.

Ive dried up all my energy stores typing out this all-to-detailed post, so now I must rest again. Be thinking of clever ways to conceal a bright-red, tissue-worn schnoozle. It feels like my nose may just fall off so dont blue ridge log cabins yourself out too much.
