Beautiful colours, dorsal/back is bright green with yellow stripe/line near the belly. the tail can be red/brown russet coloured. The underneath is yellowish white.
A medium sized snake, around 50cm to 1 meter in length.
very triangular head (unlike the non-venomous greater green snake), and scales are slightly keeled. Quite a stocky snake and can reach up to a meter in length.
the eyes are large and dark yellow, even orange. slit like vertical pupils.
two large hinged fangs at the front of the mouth.
common throughout the territory.
mostly nocturnal, and has a sensing pit on its head to enable a strike even in total darkness - which is when many bites occur, as the snake is hidden.
This snake is reported to bite a lot of people.....my wife has spoken to 3 people who have been bitten. It is an aggressive snake and the bite, tho not fatal, can be very painful, with swelling.
Feeds on frogs, lizards, rodents etc.
Reproduction: Viviparous live young, mates in early summer with a dozen babies born 2 months later. (listed by AFCD as egg laying).
conservation status: red list...least concern.
