    lpg
  • Liquefied petroleum gas

  • LPG is a Dutch indie-pop band, signed on Excelsior Recordings/V2 Records. In April 2005, their critically acclaimed debut album I fear no foe was released in the Netherlands, receiving positive reviews from established magazines and websites, such as Oor, VPRO 3voor12 and Volkskrant.

  • LPG is an American hip-hop group from Los Angeles, California. Their name was understood to stand for "Lord's Personal Gangsters", but now is "Living Proof of Grace". They released their first album on Brainstorm Records.

  • Liquid petroleum gas or propane. Propane is a common fuel used for cooking and heating. CNG (natural gas) is considered safer because propane is heavy than air and will sink into the bilge if it leaks, creating the potential for an explosion.

This gate, fashioned from arbutus branches, is at the lower end of my meadow and opens onto the Galloping Goose Trail. It embodies the rural nature of where I live as well as my own, somewhat quirky, nature. Many people walk or ride along the Trail and I can always pinpoint my property by saying: "It's the one with the arbutus gate."

US Army UH-60 Blackhawks, Tall Afar, Iraq

US Army UH-60 Blackhawks, Tall Afar, Iraq

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972. The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61.
The UH-60A entered service with the Army in 1979, to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the Army's tactical transport helicopter. This was followed by the fielding of electronic warfare and special operations variants of the Black Hawk. Improved UH-60L and UH-60M utility variants have also been developed. Modified versions have also been developed for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. In addition to U.S. Army use, the UH-60 family has been exported to several nations. Black Hawks have served in combat during conflicts in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other areas in the Middle East.
Development Initial requirementIn the late 1960s, the United States Army began forming requirements for a helicopter to replace the UH-1 Iroquois, and designated the program as the Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS). The Army also initiated the development of a new, common turbine engine for its helicopters that would become the General Electric T700. Based on experience in Vietnam, the Army required significant performance, survivability and reliability improvements from both UTTAS and the new powerplant. The Army released its UTTAS request for proposals (RFP) in January 1972. The RFP also included air transport requirements. Transport aboard the C-130 limited the UTTAS cabin height and length.
The UTTAS requirements for improved reliability, survivability and lower life-cycle costs resulted in features such as dual-engines with improved hot and high altitude performance, and a modular design (reduced maintenance footprint); run-dry gearboxes; ballistically tolerant, redundant subsystems (hydraulic, electrical and flight controls); crashworthy crew (armored) and troop seats; dual-stage oleo main landing gear; ballistically tolerant, crashworthy main structure; quieter, more robust main and tail rotor systems; and a ballistically tolerant, crashworthy fuel system.
Four prototypes were constructed, with the first YUH-60A flying in October 1974. Prior to delivery of the prototypes to the US Army, a preliminary evaluation was conducted in November 1975 to ensure the aircraft could be operated safely during all testing. Three of the prototypes were delivered to the Army in March 1976, for evaluation against the rival Boeing-Vertol design, the YUH-61A, and one was kept by Sikorsky for internal research. The Army selected the UH-60 for production in December 1976. Deliveries of the UH-60A to the Army began in October 1978 and the helicopter entered service in June 1979.
Upgrades and variations
UH-60s equipped with M60 machine guns near An Najaf, Iraq in May 2005.After entering service, the helicopter was modified for new missions and roles, including mine laying and medical evacuation. An EH-60 variant was developed to conduct electronic warfare and special operations aviation developed the MH-60 variant to support its missions.
Due to weight increases from the addition of mission equipment and other changes, the Army ordered the improved UH-60L in 1987. The new model incorporated all of the modifications made to the UH-60A fleet as standard design features. The UH-60L also featured more power and lifting capability with upgraded T700-GE-701C engines and a stronger gearbox, both developed for the SH-60B Seahawk. Its external lift capacity increased by 1,000 lb (450 kg) to 9,000 lb (4,100 kg). The UH-60L also incorporated the automatic flight control system (AFCS) from the SH-60 for better flight control due to handling issues with the more powerful engines. Production of the L-model began in 1989.
Development of the next improved variant, the UH-60M, was approved in 2001, to extend the service life of the UH-60 design into the 2020s. The UH-60M incorporates upgraded T700-GE-701D engines and improved rotor blades. It also features state of the art electronic instrumentation, flight controls and aircraft navigation control. After the U.S. DoD approved low-rate initial production of the new variant, manufacturing began in 2006, with the first of 22 new UH-60Ms delivered in July 2006. After an initial operational evaluation, the Army approved full-rate production and a five-year contract for 1,227 helicopters in December 2007. By March 2009, 100 UH-60M helicopters had been delivered to the Army.
In the 1 May 2011 operation that killed Osama bin Laden, it emerged that the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which operated the helicopters during the raid, used a highly modified version of the UH-60. Features apparently include a modified tail section with ex

The large glass surface allows the constant monitoring of the baking. The use of a system with hinges with springs allows the door to be released in a few second in order to proceed with the cleaning and/or maintenance, without the help of any tool, and grants, in the meantime, an always optimal closing. External structure: The panel is made completely in stainless steel. Temperature gauge in the control panel there is a temperature gauge indicating perfectly and in real time the temperatures inside the baking chambers. Baking surface:
bricks in refractory material certified for the cooking of the food are installed inside the baking chambers. Fastening steam discharger: the oven has a valve for the total or partial fastening of the smoke discharge. Module HOOD represents the upper terminal part of the oven. It collects the baking steams coming out by opening the door and it canalises them in the chimney flue. Lighting: ovens are equipped with internal lighting operated by a push button in the control panel. Temperature setting:
the temperature is set by electro-mechanical thermostats placed on the control panel with the possibility to regulate them from 50°C to 450°C.
TOP Version: it is possible to manufacture the baking chamber of the oven completely (bottom, top, sides and back) in refractory material.

• Ferrari P4/5• Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina at 2006 Pebble Beach Concours.
Monterey Bay Peninsula, California, USA. • Photography © by Artamia.
• Thank-You, Inge Kühn, for priceless info and links !!!

• The FERRARI P4/5 was publicly revealed on August 18, 2006 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance and shown again at the Paris Motor Show in late September.

• Specifications

• The Ferrari P4/5 can accelerate from 0-100 kilometres per hour (0-62 mph) in 3.0 seconds (0.5 seconds quicker than the Enzo). It has a top speed of 233 mph (375 km/h). The car has a frontal area of 1.906 square metres (20.52 sq ft), but the sharp nose and smooth curves mean it has a drag coefficient of only 0.34.

• Upon seeing P 4/5 Luca di Montezemolo felt that the car deserved to be officially badged as a Ferrari and along with Andrea Pininfarina and James Glickenhaus agreed that its official name would be "Ferrari P 4/5 by Pininfarina". Ted West wrote an article in Car and Driver about how this came to be "The Beast of Turin".

• On September 2009, Glickenhaus announced his intention to race a new version of the P4/5 in the 2010 24 Hours Nürburgring. The car, called the P4/5 Competizione, would not be a conversion of his road car but instead an entirely new car with a Ferrari chassis, VIN number and drivetrain. On May 2010 however, it was revealed that the Competizione would in fact be raced in 2011, based on a 430 Scuderia. It would be built to FIA GT2 standards and raced by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus in an Experimental Class under the direction of Paolo Garella, former Head of Special Projects at Pininfarina.

• Chassis
Much of the suspension was unchanged from the original Enzo, with the same double wishbone suspension at the front and rear, and the same Brembo carbon-ceramic anti-lock disc brakes with diameter of 340 millimetres (13.4 in) at the front and rear.[1] The aluminium alloy wheels are 510 millimetres (20 in) in diameter, the front tyres have codes of ZR 255/35 and the rear, ZR 335/30.

• Exterior
The exterior of the car is made entirely of carbon fibre reinforced plastic and is similar in shape to the Ferrari 330 P4 as Glickenhaus requested, however it has been called a "rolling history of Ferrari-racing-DNA" sharing elements from several historic Ferrari vehicles, not just the 330 P4. The rear window is similar to that of the Ferrari 512S, the side vents are similar to the Ferrari 330 P3 and the nose is similar to that of the Ferrari 333 SP which improves cooling and the car's frontal crash safety. The butterfly doors (similar to those of the McLaren F1) are designed such that even at 160 mph (260 km/h) there is no wind noise. The improved aerodynamics have proven themselves, giving the car greater downforce at the same time as less drag than the Enzo also making the car more stable than the Enzo at high speeds.

• Powertrain
The P4/5 has the same engine as the Enzo Ferrari it was built on, a 65° Dino F140 V12. The 12 cylinders have a total capacity of 5998 cubic centimetres, each with 4 valves. The redline rpm at 8200 and the torque of 485 lb·ft (658 N·m) at 5500 rpm are both the same as the Enzo, but it produces marginally more power with 660 brake horsepower (492 kW) at 7800 rpm. The P4/5 uses the 6 speed semi-automatic transmission of the Enzo with black shifting paddles behind the wheel. It has two directional indicator buttons, one mounted on each side of the steering wheel.

• The Ferrari P4/5 (officially known as the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina)
is a one-off sports car made by Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari but redesigned by Pininfarina for film director and stock exchange magnate James Glickenhaus. The car was an Enzo Ferrari but the owner James Glickenhaus preferred the styling of Ferrari's 1960s race cars, the P Series. The project cost Glickenhaus US$ 4 million and was officially presented to the public in August 2006 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance, but in July 2006 Glickenhaus allowed several websites to publish images of the clay model.

• Development
On March 2005 James Glickenhaus, stock exchange magnate and known car collector, was approached by Pininfarina who asked if he was interested in commissioning a one-off car. Andrea Pininfarina, grandson of the company’s founder later said "The Ferrari 612 Kappa and this P4/5 are the first. But we want to grow this business." indicating that Pininfarina is interested in producing other unique cars. Glickenhaus replied that he would like a modern Ferrari P, and in June of that year he signed a contract with Pininfarina to produce the car including the price, approximately US$4 million though in an interview he said "I feel they gave me more than I expected". Glickenhaus purchased the last unsold Enzo Ferrari and upon receipt of the car he took it to Pininfarina to be redesigned similar to his 1967 Ferrari 330 P 3/4 chassis 0846 which he also delivered to Pininfarina. 1924 Hispano Suiza H6C Tulipwood front 2

In 1898 a Spanish artillery captain, Emilio de la Cuadra, started electric automobile production in Barcelona under the name of La Cuadra. In Paris, De la Cuadra met the talented Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt (lived 1878–1953) and hired him to work for the company in Spain. La Cuadra built their first gas-powered engines from Birkigt designs. At some point in 1902, the ownership changed hands to J. Castro and became Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles (Spanish-Swiss Car Factory) but this company went bankrupt in December 1903.
Yet another restructuring took place in 1904, creating La Hispano-Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles also under Castro' s direction. Four new engines were introduced in the next year and a half. 3.8 litre and 7.4 litre four-cylinder and a pair of big six-cylinder engines were produced. This company managed to avoid bankruptcy and in Spain remained in operation, as a car, truck and aviation engine producer, with its main plant located in Barcelona, until 1946. They mass-produced cars, trucks and buses and a number of hand-built racing and luxury cars, some owned by King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
By this time in the early twentieth France was proving to be a much larger market for their luxury cars than Spain. In 1911 a new factory, known as Hispano France, was set up in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret. In 1914, they moved to larger factories at Bois-Colombes and took the name Hispano-Suiza.
At the first motor show after the end of the First World War, the 1919 Paris Auto Salon, Marc Birkigt launched a new luxury model, the H6. For many years the six cylinder Hispano Suiza's refinement and built quality remained unmatched. In the War, Hispano Suiza had supplied over 50,000 V12 fighter plane engines. For his new top of the line model, Birkigt first intended to use a version of the well proven V12. After some tests he concluded that one bank of a V12 would be more than sufficient to propel the new car. The 'six' displaced just over 6.5 litres and featured a single overhead camshaft. Each 35 lb crankshaft was machined from a 600 lb billet, resulting in a very rigid crankshaft. This was typical for Birkigt's 'no cost spared' perfectionism. After World War I Hispano-Suiza returned to automobile engine design and, in 1919, introduced the H6, earning them a reputation even greater than that of Rolls-Royce in England. Indeed, Rolls-Royce featured many Hispano-Suiza patented features, under licence. Most notably, Rolls-Royce used for many years the famed Hispano-Suiza power brakes, reputedly the best in the world, which used the torque generated by a drum brake mounted on the transmission shaft to power those on the wheels.
For the block and head aluminium was used, to keep the weight of the engine down. In the block a six separate steel sleeves formed the cylinders. Ignition was through two coils, with two plugs per cylinder, one on each side of the engine. The overhead camshaft was shaft driven and operated the valves, which were set vertical in the block. This was unconventional setup, which could result in tremendous damage, if a valve dropped in the cylinder. Birkigt was confident in using it, as the valves had never failed on the V12 airplane engines.Finished in black enamel and polished aluminium, the engine was mounted in a conventional ladder frame. It was suspended by a live axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs all-round. The four drum brakes were power assisted by a patented 'servobrake' system. The ingenious system used the car's momentum to slow it down. The brake assistance system took the power from the gearbox, which drove a shaft at 1/64 the speed of the engine. If all else failed, the rear brakes could be activated using a hand lever.Built in Paris and later in the Czech Republic as well, the H6 offered luxury, speed and refinement. Many of Hispano Suiza's European competitors like Rolls Royce, Bentley and Isotta Fraschini offered one or two of these ingredients, but not until the late 1920s did another manufacturer come up to par with the H6. This complete package did not come cheaply and for a while the H6 was the most expensive European car available. In 1922 the slightly more powerful H6B replaced the H6 and in 1924 the 8-litre H6C was added to the line-up.Hispano Suiza delivered the H6 as a rolling chassis for coach builders to body. To match the car's remarkable abilities, only the finest coach builders were commissioned to design and fit bodies on the H6 chassis. A vast majority of the chassis were fitted luxurious coachwork. The featured example is one of the most famous exceptions. Built to the order of one of of Hispano Suiza's biggest clients, Andre Dubonnet, the unique coachwork was built by Nieuport, a French aviation company.Dubonnet, the heir to an aperitif and cognac fortune, was an accomplished pilot and racing driver and needed a new car for the 1924 edition of the Targa Florio. He understood that weight and wind resistance were his biggest adversaries, which is why

1925 McFarlan Town Car

1925 McFarlan Town Car

(Used Photoshop and Capture NX2)

Some of the early automakers transitioned from, or could trace their roots to, making horse-drawn carriages to making automobiles ~ some of which could be hitched to horses, if the engine failed.

One of the earliest American automakers was McFarlan, which dates back to 1856. That's when J.B. McFarlan founded his carriage-building company in Connersville, Ind.

"His grandson, Henry McFarlan, established the McFarlan Motor Corp. in 1910 and produced an estimated 25 cars during the first year," according to the Reno-based National Automobile Museum. "Production built up slowly with 35 cars being produced in 1911 and 40 cars in 1912.

"Early in the 1920s, McFarlan began building sedan bodies for the Auburn Motor Car Co. and soon this became the firm's most important activity."

In 1921, McFarlan introduced the twin-valve six.

"Despite its high price, 1922 was the company's best year ever," the museum notes, "selling 235 cars.

"In 1924, the company introduced the single-valve six and in 1926 the eight-in-line series."

Even today, the grand design of a McFarlan car is unmistakable.

"The McFarlan car's appearance was solid, dignified and regal," the museum says, "having extremely luxurious interiors and very large windows.

"It is likely that McFarlan passengers wished not only to see, but to be seen! There were pillows, a hassock, arm rests, a smoking set and, in the roadster, a separate golf-bag compartment."

Owners had their choice of colors, too.

"Wide color choices were available both in the upholstery and in the car colors," according to the museum. "The twin-valve six T-head engine was designed with four valves ~ two intake, two exhaust ~ and three spark plugs per cylinder.

"McFarlan cars were considered the hallmark of distinction and quality and were owned by bankers, businessmen and diplomats."

In 1926, the museum said McFarlan became ill, which drained the company of its "dynamic leadership."

"The company was declared bankrupt in 1928 and the McFarlan assets were purchased by E.L. Cord."

Cord seemed to have a knack for buying up the assets of manufacturers on the ropes.

"Sewer TV"

I got a bit of education in sewerology today, courtesy of a crew from the city sanitation dept., or Public Works, or whatever. They were involved in some operations at a nearby intersection, and my curiosity was too much ... I had to find out what they were up to. Turns out the guys operating this truck were running a video camera through the main sewer line, and monitoring what it "sees" on a TV screen like this.
The sewer system in our neighborhood is old -- probably at least 60 - 70 years -- and consists of 6"-diameter sections of clay pipe joined together. (Newer ones are 8".) That provides many small gaps for roots to invade the line, among other things. Cracking of the clay pipe sections is another form of possible damage. So, after noticing a good many root problems, they had another truck and crew come in to run an auger up the line, starting from a manhole one block "downstream."
When I asked one of the workers why they were doing this now -- were there complaints from residents, for instance? -- he said no, the city is getting ready to repave the street and they want to check and see that there aren't existing sewer line problems which would require digging up the street soon after the repaving had been done.
The other thing that was new to me was discovering that at each intersection, where a manhole provides access to the sewer line, the 6" pipe is open. The upper half of it, that is. Which means that the effluent is visible as it flows downstream. I asked the guy if that took some getting used to -- working in an environment which involves pretty close contact with one of the more nitty gritty or seamy sides of life.
"No," he said. "You get used to it. You get so you could stop and eat your lunch right here, right now. No problem."
Sounded kind of like something out of that TV show which Mike Rowe does -- "Dirty Jobs." He seems to have quite a following, too, which would seem to indicate that down & dirty subject matter -- what goes on in the sewer system for instance -- may be somewhat repulsive, but it's still interesting to a lot of people.
BTW, there was a steady flow of water ... or whatever ... all the while as I was observing the sewer activity.

  • An aspect or feature of a situation, problem, or thing

  • (dimension) one of three Cartesian coordinates that determine a position in space

  • A mode of linear extension of which there are three in space and two on a flat surface, which corresponds to one of a set of coordinates specifying the position of a point

  • (dimension) the magnitude of something in a particular direction (especially length or width or height)

  • (dimension) property: a construct whereby objects or individuals can be distinguished; "self-confidence is not an endearing property"

  • A measurable extent of some kind, such as length, breadth, depth, or height

    wafer
  • a small adhesive disk of paste; used to seal letters

  • a small thin crisp cake or cookie

  • A thin disk of unleavened bread used in the Eucharist

  • A very thin, light, crisp, sweet cookie or cracker, esp. one of a kind eaten with ice cream

I'm very much in love with the smooth powdered ivory quality of the plastic that comes out of the dimension machines. I didn't think anything was going to win out over the powder machines of Z Corp, which by comparison come out with more of a lower-resolution sandstone quality, and then are treated with compounds to seal them up, make them sturdy, or rubberize them. They're too brittle just after print, and also must dry for a few hours. The dimension printers create parts that are ready immediately, require no post-op work, and are strong enough to immediately be used as, in one example shown to me today, strong spring-like plastic clips.

One big thing Z Corp does have over these machines is inkjet printheads for full-color support, meaning that as the powder is layered up, the topmost new layer is run over inkjet printer style to both add the hardening compound, and a layer of color which can be applied to just the edges, or the entire cross section for models that can be cut open for full-color cross-sections. If you need that kind of photo-printing built into your printer, Z Corp is your best bet. I'll be happy to drop this favorites war and accept one of each to work side-by-side in harmony in my apartment.

Quick and dirty sketch with basic dimensions of the Mermaid parts I've knit so far. It is Large - and this is pre-blocking. I have a feeling it is going to be a bit big, even on me.
